5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2002-04-13

This is a great book, considering how huge it is. Being written in 1998, this book has all the current knowledge. There's more info on the actual era and the technical asspects of dinosaurs than the actual dinosaurs. Despite the price, this book is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Questions about dinosaurs that go deeper than the surface?.......2001-04-15

If so, then this is the book for you! The Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs is a wonderful, up-to-date book that covers most, if not all, topics concerned with dinosaurs. Well put-together, beautifully illustrated, and written by today's top paleontologists, the Encyclopedia is well worth the price. Although it doesn't get too technical, this book is not for the uninformed. A must have for any serious dino-enthusiast - believe me, it will answer your questions, and lead you to ask more! 5 stars may not be enough for this one! (Plus it's massive enough to knock some sense into the not-so-dino-loving loved one or associate in your life!)

5 out of 5 stars This definitely belongs on the shelf of any dino-lover........1999-01-24

When I first received this book for Christmas, I was shocked! The book was the size and weight of a telephone book! It's packed with skeletal drawings, cladograms, paintings... You name it, it's in the text.

4 out of 5 stars Nice work!.......1998-10-11

This is really a good book, with much nice information and artwork (although more art plates may have been a good idea). The numerous articles are written by specialists and that makes the book more up-to-date and interesting than many others. However, articles are very short, so that people will quickly become interested to get more informations. This is possible with references given at the end of each entry.

However, I think this book is a bit too technical for the basal concepts it describes; the style *The Complete Dinosaur* is, I think, more approprite.

Dr. Philip Whitfield, lecturer in Zoology at King's College, London, has compiled this weighty, authoritative, and beautiful volume about the five classes of vertebrates: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes. An overview of each class serves as an introduction to its members and includes descriptions of the class's distinguishing features, history, and major families, plus cladograms showing the possible phylogenic relationships within the class. Because most readers are more comfortable with the traditional classifications of kingdom, phylum, order, etc., within the chapters themselves the families are arranged in accordance with that system. The section on each family, in turn, begins with a brief overview of the family, followed by representative examples of family members. Each included species is then described separately. The entry includes a full-color painting of the animal, the animal's common and scientific name, its size, breeding patterns, feeding habits, geographic range, and more. Relevant controversies of classification are also mentioned; for example, Whitfield notes that zoologists have recently decided to move the Lagomorpha (rabbits, hares, and pikas) out of the rodent order and grant them status as an order unto themselves. If you haven't been keeping track of who is related to whom, a detailed index with both common and scientific names alphabetized together can help you find the animals you seek. With its more than 2,000 beautiful illustrations and informative text on everything from Aardvark to Zosterops japonicus (a.k.a. the Japanese White-eye, a small green bird), The Encyclopedia of Animals is an excellent reference tool--and a browser's delight. --C.B. Delaney

    Book Description

Authoritative and beautiful, written by expert zoologists and illustrated with nearly two thousand original full-color paintings by the world's finest wildlife artists, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Animals is one of the most extraordinary references ever published. No other guide to the animal world combines such comprehensiveness, consistency of style, and elegance.

This catalogue of the animal world depicts species in detail -- mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish -- illustrating each in color, a stunning guide to the staggering diversity of vertebrate animals. Organized by the taxonomic categories of order, family, genus, and species, the text gives an overview of the characteristics shared by animals within each family. When a family's members are similar, the most typical and most interesting are depicted, with more species included for every dramatic visual variation. Each illustrated animal is described in detail, and every entry includes information on size, breeding patterns, feeding habits, intriguing adaptations and behaviors, common and scientific names, conservation status, geographic range, and habitat.

Written by leading scientists in each field, and incorporating innovative graphics -- cladograms -- in to illustrate the evolution and diversity of each class in the animal kingdom, this remarkable book is an essential reference for every home.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2001-02-09

I love this book. I adore all animals, and I've wanted an encyclopedia of them for a long time. I finally bought this one, and I love it! The drawing are beautifull, and the information is very helpful. It has all the old favorites, like lions, zeberas, ducks, bullfrogs, etc., but it also has obscure animals, like piped currawongs, malleefowl, bandy-bandys, and cane rats. You can learn so much from this book. You can use it as a reference, or just read it straight through . Everyone who loves the animal kingdom should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book to teach children to respect animals........2000-07-15

Have you ever seen an "okapi," a "serow," or a "hutia" ? Neither had I. This is a book for everyone. Children will be fascinated and adults enlightened. It is a heavy book you would not want to carry home from the library. I recommend you purchase your own copy. Once you see how beautiful this book is, you will also want to recommend it to your school librarian as a reference book. There is a classification section and a complete index which one would expect from such an encyclopedic work.

I was shocked to read in the foreword that within the next 80-100 years, many of the beautiful creatures described in this book would become extinct. This is definitely a book for all those who value our fascinating planet.

If you love animals, this is your ultimate guide to learning more. With over 2,000 illustrations of mammals, reptiles, fish, birds and amphibians, this is truly an incredible visual catalogue of who is who in the animal kingdom.

Each illustrated animal is described in detail. The feeding habits, behaviors, geographic range and habitat is also included. The publishing company also employed some of the world's finest wildlife artists to beautifully create each picture.

4 out of 5 stars good, but lacked regional information.......1999-11-28

This book was good for a 'getting to know you' on certain types of animals, however, it lacked many specific regional animals and it didn't clearly state where the animals were located. This is definately a reference and not for someone looking to figure out what's lurking in their backyard.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage, but taxa biased.......1999-06-27

This book is monumental and for the price it is certainly a steal. Classification is current and coverage is amazing. As I mentioned, there certainly is a taxonomical bias in this book. The fish class is by far the largest vertebrate class; however, many more pages are spent on mammals and birds which when combined still have less species than the fish class. This is acceptable, considering many more people are interested in birds and mammals. However, this means that the coverage of the fish class is not as taxonomically specific. As such, most of the coverage of the fish class is only down to order, not family or subfamily as it sometimes is in the bird and mammal sections. Coverage of all the fish families would entail much more work and there is already an entire book (Fishes of the World by Joseph S. Nelson $125) written on this (but much poorer illustrations, just line drawings).

Overall an excellent book! It is a good starting book for the aspiring zoologist. After reading/looking at this book one will be interested in why there are so many different species out there, how they are different, and what path led to them becoming as they now are. After this book I would recommend additional books in Mammalogy (Mammalogy: Adaptation, Diversity, and Ecology; by George Feldhamer), Ornithology (Ornithology; by Frank B. Gill), Herpetology (Herpetology: An Introductory Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles; by George Zug), and Ichthyology (Biology of Fishes, Carl E. Bond). After these books one can always expand to the invertebrates (especially the insects) and even switch kingdoms to plant, fungi...

5 out of 5 stars The advertisement should make clear geographic coverage........1998-11-11

Down in the South Hemisphere, we have a completely different fauna. Let alone Australia, which besides South has a fauna of its own. This book should specify, it is written only for Europe and North America? Are the South american and Australian animals included?

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not an encyclopedia.......2003-11-29

This is a book that will guide you in planning, building and maintaining any type of water garden you could imagine. It covers a lot of territory, from container water gardens to formal pools, bog gardens, rills, canals and even dew ponds. It will help you plan lighting, bridges, stepping stones and wet islands. It is especially useful in letting you know what you should be planning ahead for, what aspect you might not have considered that should be factored in. The writer includes a goodly section on plants too, including bog and marginal plants.

Some of the pond construction details are complex and might make you consider getting expert help. Sound foundations for even the most simple rustic bridge require concrete footings, perhaps with reinforcing rods. The book has much to offer in the area of pond maintenance, and in how to propagate and plant water plants - I loved the idea of planting them in old panty hose, rather than planting baskets or burlap - but I thought the section on fish and pond ecology was weak.

While comprehensive and having plenty of useful ideas and caveats, this is not an encyclopedia. Written by a water garden specialist from Britain, the book will make an interesting and attractive addition to your water garden library. It is useful and well illustrated with step-by-step how-to-do-it photographs, but it is nowhere near being an encyclopedia.

5 out of 5 stars I knew Nishiyama and this book is Nishiyama.......2007-01-11

I bought this book written by Hidetaka Nishiyama because I wanted to relearn his style of Karate after some 35 years away from the art. This book teaches one the basic Karate moves and accompanying philosophy the old fashioned way. Like learning the abc's one must start at the beginning and learn through repetition, building on a firm foundation and hard work. The illustrations are clear and straight-forward, the explanations are as clear as you can get in a written format. The progression of the student cannot fail to receive a good start with this manual.

          5 out of 5 stars comperhensive.......2006-04-27

i had this book now for three years , still can not find a single book that beats it or even competes it.
absolutely excellent book. more than enough illustrations, simple and straight however suffecient explaination for workouts, stances ,basic and advanced techniques.just looking at the book's cover makes me want to exercise (very motivating)
if you are looking for a book that saves you time , mony and effort of buying many other books then i'd strongly recommend that you get "Karate: The Art of Empty-Hand Fighting
          by Hidetaka Nishiyama
" the best single Karate book ever written

4 out of 5 stars Fundamental Shotokan Karate.......2002-03-17

Karate: the Art of "Empty Hand" Fighting by Hidetaka Nishiyama and Richard C. Brown is the perfect starter book for any one wishing to learn Shotokan Karate. It describes all the stances, punches, strikes, blocks, and kicks. An explanation of the application of Karate techniques in self-defense situations is given. Briefly outlined is the history and principles of the art but what is indispensable in the book are the recommended schedules for the different training situations which make this book a perfect guide for the student and helpful manual for the instructor. After learning what is in this book I would suggest moving on to one of the books by Robin L. Rielly; either Complete Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-2108-9, or The Secrets of Shotokan Karate, ISBN 0-8048-3229-3. My only wish is that the chapters on Kumite and Kata would be expanded but that is why I recommend the two books above as well.

5 out of 5 stars A must for all serious practioner of Karate.......2001-05-09

This book should be considered a bible to all martial artist and students who are serious about studying the Japanese Style karate. It is very informative and still up to date. As an Instructor I find this book as a great source of reference.

5 out of 5 stars Early work but still great.......2000-10-06

Considering this book came out originally in 1960 and was the first large-format book on Karate I had seen up to that point, it is remarkable that it has rarely been exceeded in the all time since. The photos of the basic techniques are very clear. The applications sections are generous with good coverage of sparring and self-defense.

I have a personal story about Nishiyama, although I didn't study with him myself, but someone I know did. Nishiyama was in Los Angelos for some time back in the 60's and he was conducting a training session. One of the students, a guy by the name of Ray Dalke, who later led the U.C. Riverside Shotokan club to the national championship title, was in the class. I met Dalke when I was a doctoral student at UCR back in the early 80's, but I actually heard this from one of his students. Ray had never been very loose in the legs, especially the groin stretch, where you sit on the ground in a quasi-lotus position and bounce your knees up and down and try to get them all the way to the ground.

Anyway, Nishiyama came around to Dalke, and noticed his problem. He says to Dalke, "You want to have loose lap?" (Sometimes Nishiyama's English was a bit rough, but the meaning came through loud and clear). Dalke says, "yes, Master, I do." Nishiyama says again, "Are you sure you want to have loose lap?" Dalke says, "Yes, yes, Master, I want it more than anything!" At that moment Nishiyama jumps up into the air and comes down with both feet planted squarely on Dalke's knees, driving them all the way to the floor.

Well, he said Dalke's scream of agony could be heard for two city blocks. They had to get an ambulance and take Dalke away. But he survived and was back later after he healed with the "loosest lap" you've ever seen. I hope Ray doesn't mind my telling his story. Like I said, I met Ray in about 1980 when he was the faculty karate instructor at UC Riverside and he was really a pretty cool guy, as well as an excellent instructor. He loved the Shotokan katas and I recall having an enjoyable discussion with him about some of the more advanced forms.

Anyway, Nishiyama is one of the greats of the Shotokan style and this book is still one of the finest books on the subject. I will say one more thing about Nishiyama, which is that he has the most vicious-looking front kick I've ever seen. I've tried to emulate his style on this one but he's basically got the patent on it.
