Book Description
Divided into three parts,
Doubly Labelled Water presents a clear and accessible account of this technique.
Part One presents a general introduction to the study of animal energetics:
Part Two discusses the theory behind use of doubled labellled water and
Part Three evaluates the practical aspects of its use and the methodlologies required for its application.
Customer Reviews:
Essential.......2001-04-10
This book really stands out, more than anything else in the last 50 years. Using doubly labelled water is complex and can be confusing, but Speakman does a great job in all three sections of his book. First, he presents the general introdution to animal energetics, then he talks about the theroy of doublly labelled water, and finally he presents useful information about the practice of both using and writing about doubly labeled water in scientific papers. These book is essential reading for graduate students and professors looking for a guide in getting started with doubly labelled water.

Book Description
This short book explains hot water heating (hydronic) controls and circuits from the perspective of power suppy, switch, and load. The book starts with a simple control circuit and builds to multiple zone circuits. It explains that adding a control panel simplifies a job rather than making it more complex. The book then looks at various panels, building from an aquastat relay to multiple-zone and multiple-purpose panels.
Customer Reviews:
A little too basic.......2006-02-27
This book would make a good school book to show kids the basics of electrical circuits.
It unfortunately is based on obsolete technology for the hydronic controls and has no controls for heat pumps. It's based around boilers etc.
Excellent for the novice.......2005-05-18
I am a complete novice when it comes to hydronic controls. Basically, I'm an owner-builder who decided to install radiant heat. Since I know nothing about setting it up, I rely on elementary books and materials from the internet to gain knowledge.
Installing the PEX tubing in the slab was easy enough as was attaching the tubing to the underside of the second floor. I had intended to hire someone to finish the set-up but when finances became tight I decided to have a go at it.
I'm not done yet but this book has given me confidence to continue on.
way too simple.......2005-01-06
This book is far too basic. Almost all of the book is
about very simple electrical concepts; the "hydronic
controls" portions are only examples of these general
concepts. I was greatly disappointed with the book --
most manufacturer's web sites have much better and
more understandable descriptions.
This is a worthless book on Radiant Floor Heating.......2004-10-13
This book is totally worthless if you are hoping to understand and design the control systems for radiant floor heating. I wish I could get my money back. The book description by the publisher and the Editorial Reviews are misleading at best. I wish there had been a buyer review at the time I placed my order with Amazon--I would have passed on this book. Avoid.
Too basic to be of use.......2002-11-21
I was very disappointed in this book. It says right on the front cover that it's "A Contractor's easy guide to hydronic Controls, Wiring, and Wiring Diagrams". If a contractor needs to refer to this basic of information, I don't think I want them working in my house. I learned everthing in this book in High School. Don't waste your time unless you have no idea about how electricity works

Book Description
Dryland degradation and desertification now affect almost a billion people around the world. Tragically, the biological resources and productivity of millions of acres of land are lost to desertification each year because people remain unaware of strategies and techniques that could improve yields, reduce risk, and begin healing the world's deserts. A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration is the first book to offer practical, field-tested solutions to this critical problem.
Author David Bainbridge has spent more than 25 years actively involved in restoring lands across the American Southwest. A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration presents the results of his years of fieldwork, as well as research and experience from scientists and practitioners around the globe.
The book discusses the ecology of desert plants, explores the causes of desertification and land abuse, and outlines the processes and procedures needed to evaluate, plan, implement, and monitor desert restoration projects. It sets forth economical and practical field-tested solutions for understanding site characteristics, selecting and growing plants, and ensuring that they survive with a minimal amount of water and care. Each chapter represents a guide to a critical topic for environmental restoration; extensive photographs, diagrams and drawings give detailed information for immediate application, and additional resources are included in appendixes.
A Guide for Desert and Dryland Restoration is the first comprehensive book focused on restoring arid regions, and clearly demonstrates that arid lands can be successfully rehabilitated. In addition to restorationists, the book will be an invaluable resource for anyone working in arid lands, including farmers, ranchers, gardeners, landscapers, outdoor recreation professionals, and activists.
Customer Reviews:
Bainbidge 2007 New hope for arid lands.......2007-09-21
Excellent practical advice on all aspects of arid land ecological restoration. I have no doubt that the copy on my reference shelf will soon grow dog-eared through use. I strongly recommend this book to restoration ecologists and environmental consultants seeking to make their services more useful and cost effective
Customer Reviews:
Very clear and understanable book.......1999-02-24

Customer Reviews:
good stuff.......2007-08-26
Very detailed book, exellent reference material, as well as gives some insites into different styles.I am very happy with it and it has helped me already. Highly recomended to anyone intrested in the martial arts of this type.
Best non-Chinese book on wushu.......2007-03-08
This volume is nothing but great. It covers all the things you'll need for your wushu training and is crammed with loads of extra information about styles, people, weapons and more.
I especially like the fact that it stresses jibengong, the fundamental excercises of wushu, and not taolu (form). The sanda applications are well explained and covers a lot of ground. A little bit more fighting strategy and tactics would be a good thing though. The explanations and presentation of neigong, the internal martial arts, are also very good. I think that neigong and qigong have to be felt and describing them in words is an impossible task that nobody ever will be able to do well, but Shou Yu Liang does a good job none the less. The glossary in the end is very impressive indeed. It has a LOT of entries of which many are illustrated. Very well.
My only real criticism of the work is that I don't think it covers wushu history well enough. It's too much of a runthrough and dosen't really give any in-depth information. It is a subject that is very dear to me so I guess I'm biased on that point. Also their explanation of the character wu (as in wushu)is not satisfactory. There are generally two mainstream theories in linguistic circles of the original meaning of the word (the most popular by far is Berhard Karlgrens) none of which is the one presented in this volume.
However, that is only a tiny complaint and it dosen't alter the fact that this is a very impressive book. It truly IS the best book on wushu in English. I live and train traditional wushu in Beijing and have trained for some 8-9 years. I am of the opinion that wushu cannot be learned from a book, no matter how good it is, but it can definitely help you improve and clarify things for you. This book is a very good reference, especially for beginners, but also for the advanced student. It offers a lot of information and is WELL worth the price.
Modernistic Kung Fu.......2007-01-10
This book does not illustrate the visually captivating "flowery fist" kung fu often seen in the movies. It really addresses the root elements of kung fu.Not only does it cover the fighting elements but also the fitness and spiritual aspects as well. This is a must have for anyone interested in martial arts.
Great book on Wushu.......2007-01-04
I think this is one of the most complete book on Wushu that I've came across.
It contains information on warmups, techniques, sanshou, chin na, and chi kung.
The appendix at the end of the book was very informative. It provides information about many of the Wushu figures and styles.
The only thing I was unclear on is how to actually apply the wushu techniques from forms in free sparring or fight. It seems that there is a disconnect between the techniques used in the forms and the techniques used in Sanshou. The technique used in Sanshou looked more like a combination of Kickboxing and throws or even jeet kune do.
Maybe for many people, it questions the usefulness of learning technique used in forms other than for training movements and calesnetics.
Most comprehensive Wushu/kung fu book in the English Language.......2006-09-06
I train with Master Wen-Ching Wu, the second listed author, and i have trained a little with Grandmaster Liang, and I have not been able to find any books that surpass the ones that they have written. Together they have an incredibly vast knowledge of martial arts and Qigong and share it quite willingly in their fantastic books.
