Microarrays and Gene Expression
ASIN: 0199637768 |
Book Description
DNA microarrays, or biochips, are small glass chips embedded with ordered rows of DNA and by providing a massive parallel platform for data gathering represent a fundamental technical advance in biomedical research. Such biochips enable the use of advanced fabrication, detection, and data mining technologies that allow data gathering at an unprecedented rate. The first chapter is an introduction to the technology of DNA microarrays, emphasizing the methodological fundamentals of biochips. The next two chapters describe the use of confocal scanning in microarray detection and techniques for the efficient cloning and screening of differentially expressed genes. Chapter 4 describes assay optimization for enzymatic assays and chapter 5 antisense scanning arrays. This is followed by a chapter on the manufacture of molecular arrays using ink-jet printing technology. Chapter 7 describes gene expression analysis from cDNA microarrays and then chapter 8 covers the use of expression data in bioinformatics. Chapter 9 describes the use of active microelectronic arrays for DNA hybridization analysis and the last chapter details the use of microarray technology in pharmacogenomics. This Practical Approach book is a comprehensive overview of the new and expanding field of DNA microarray technology and will be invaluable to any researcher interested in the use of biochips.

Helpful but could be better.......2005-09-20
I am basically a newbie in this area and was hoping to learn the basics of using microarrays for sequencing and expression analysis. While it was somewhat helpful for me, I think that it is aimed at a more expert audience already well versed in molecular biology techniques. I found the documentation and other info on the Affymetrix site to be more comprehensive and explanatory.
Nice Overview.......2002-10-16
This book is a good primer on microarrays.

Intro to cell culturing, staining technique, interpretaion.......2002-01-21
This is a book of cytogenetics. (I'm a nonbio major.)
The author seems a person who supervises lab tests for hospitals.
Excellent detailed diagrams explaining mitosis and meiosis.
Looking at chromosomes thru an optical microscope with stains.
Looking at the chromosome bands and interpreting them as genetic defects,
both congenital and acquired (cancerous).
Cell culturing and staining techniques.
Has simplified catalogs of irregularities
including one entry on retinoblastoma.
The resolution of staining technology is about 4 megabases.
Introduction to some specialized higher resolution techniques.
Reading this book awakens us to the coming science-fiction future
where medical diagnosis will be based on the full genome.
Book Description
As our scientific and technical abilities expand at breathtaking speeds, concern that modern genetics and bioengineering are leading us to a posthuman future is growing. Is Human Nature Obsolete? poses the overarching question of what it is to be human against the background of these current advances in biotechnology. Its perspective is philosophical and interdisciplinary rather than technical; the focus is on questions of fundamental ontological importance rather than the specifics of medical or scientific practice.
The authors -- all distinguished scholars in their fields -- take on questions about technology's goals and values that are often ignored or sidelined in the face of rapid scientific advances and the highly specialized nature of technical knowledge. The essays included represent a rich variety of thought, ranging from finely nuanced philosophical and theological arguments to historical studies and cultural commentaries. Several explore the historical background of today's biotechnology: Timothy Casey traces such developments as the emergence of cybernetic humanity from Cartesian dualism, and Diane Paul presents the history of "positive" versus coerced eugenics. Jean Bethke Elshtain discusses cloning as a "messianic project" to perfect the body and exclude natural diversity -- giving as an example the elimination of Down Syndrome as an acceptable human type -- while Harold Baillie calls for an examination of the metaphysical roots of personhood. Robert Proctor finds no evidence in paleontology for any "essence of humanity," and Tom Shannon argues against materialist reductionism. Addressing social concerns, Lisa Sowle Cahill finds the possibility of a political solution to the problems raised by genetic engineering in Catholic teachings on social justice, and Langdon Winner looks critically at the "scientific enthusiasts of a posthuman future." Taken as a whole, the book provides a humanistic overview of a subject too often considered only in its technological aspect.
Book Description
Defective genes are responsible for an estimated 4,000 hereditary disorders. Children inherit these disorders from their parents in many different ways. While biomedical researchers have now identified most genes associated with genetic diseases, there are no absolute cures for these diseases today. Scientific advances have enabled affected people to experience longer and more comfortable lives, because they and their families have more beneficial means of coping with genetic disorders.
This second edition Sourcebook provides new and updated information to help laypeople understand the working of genes, the ethics of gene testing, and the causes and treatments of some of the most common genetic disorders. The book also covers the lifestyle expectations of individuals who suffer with these disorders, their disease management and care, and current research initiatives to prevent and cure gene defects. A glossary of genetic terminology and a directory of resources provide additional support and information.

Book Description
The structural and functional importance of the correct patterns of DNA methylation in all parts of a mammalian genome is, unfortunately, not well understood. The stability, inheritability, and developmental flexibility of these patterns all point to a major role that these patterns appear to play in determining structure and funtion of the genome. Up to the present time, studies on the repetitive sequences, which comprise more than 90 per cent of the DNA sequences in the human or other genomes, have been neglected.

Helpful questions.......2007-09-27
This product is extremely helpful for those persons taking medical genetics boards, genetic counseling boards, and molecular/cytogenetics boards. However, several sections have one or two questions with debatable answers, so proceed with caution, as some of the answers are not always practical.

A must read classic manual for Cave Diving.......2007-08-07
Many years have passed since the first edition still this basic manual is a must read for any Cave Diver.
An all-time classic.......2007-05-14
This booklet is the first cave diving manual and although decades old it is amazingly contemporary and still extremely useful to all technical/overhead divers. A must have book for every serious divers' library.
Great introduction to cave diving by one of the best........2001-09-04
The "brand new fifth edition" of Basic Dave Diving is last copyrighted 1986. I'm intrigued by cave diving, but am not yet a cave diver, so I don't know for sure, but question if some of the equipment discussed in absolutely up-to-date. The addresses for instructors and phone numbers for Florida recompression facilities may also be in question. I'm trusting, though, that the National Speleological Society (NSS) is not continuing to print something that promotes dangerous, discredited, technique. Moreoever, I've seen this book in the dive shops in north central Florida, and it still seems to be in use for cave diving instruction.
First, for those who judge value in the book by the quality of printing, note that this booklet is a typewritten, photocopied, booklet, copied on 8-1/2-x-11 in paper and folded in half with a cardstock cover. I just mention this so someone expecting more is not disappointed.
The book is divided into 10 short chapters, each 3 to 8 pages long, and the book can be easily read in its entirety in one evening. Each chapter begins with an actual accident report and an accident analysis leading into the subject of the chapter, whether it be silt, lights, guidline, air supply planning, etc.. Each chapter focusses on one aspect of proper cave diving, and thus the book divides techniques into small, easily digestible, pieces. Each chapter tells you what it needs to without adding extraneous information to complicate your understanding.
Note that the book focusses on cave diving technique in Florida, and warns the reader that different techniques may be appropriate in other locations.
I think that this book is a good, inexpensive, introduction to cave diving for someone with a curiosity about this sport, whether or not you plan to pursue it. The book is also written by the probably best-known person in the field of Cave Diving. (Don't let the fact that Sheck Exley died cave diving cause you discredit the information in this book - he balanced the risks with the rewards and willingly chose to push the limits of cave diving.)
It would be irresponsible of me to conclude this review without a warning. An open water diver armed with the this book might think that they know enough to safely cave dive, but PLEASE do not attempt cave diving without training from an appropriate agency. I am an open water divemaster, and do not feel that I yet have the experience to even begin cave diving training. Before beginning cave or cavern diving training, a diver requires extensive open water experience, must be thoroughly comfortable in the water, must be able to handle emergency situations without panicking, and must be physically fit.
Cave diving accident analysis. Learn from fatal errors.......1999-04-07
Very important mind forming book about cave diving. Accident analysis covering the firsts statistical reasons people get killed in cave diving. s.Exley was among the most important people to learn from. All cave divers need this to play "What if..."
Excelent Summary, This book will save your life........1998-11-12
There are several dangers that exist with cave diving. This book covers each one of these points with absolute clarity. With the description of each danger an accident analysis is reviewed where divers died by violating one of the basic rules in cave diving. This book saved my life. It is a must for anyone that is considering cave diving. With proper training and equipment Cave Diving can be a safe sport. This is a good primar on the subject
Book Description
Cave divers are the elite, and this is their story--a story of pushing the limits of technology and human endurance.
Customer Reviews:
First half great, second half not great.......2002-06-26
The book is a good description of the history of the sport. Combined with the Master Exley's "Caverns Measureless to Man", one has a good set of stories on the origins of the sport and some of the scary stories.
The second half unfortunately seems a little anecdotal and turns into something that only the die-hard archeology enthusiast would want to get further into. While entranced in the first few chapters, I got pretty bored with the rest. If you want horror stories from caving, read also Exley's Basic Cave Diving - A Blueprint for Survival. It's a hand-typed, thin pamphlet of a book, but it's one of those essential reads, even if you don't intend to do the sport - like me.
The Cave Divers.......2002-02-23
Burgess's recount of these various cave diving episodes makes a good read. It is not very detailed on technical aspects, nor pretends to be a comprehensive re-tracing of the cave diving history. It does however weave in suspense filled short stories the beginnings of cave diving, its major players and their accomplishments. Without the boring list type of dry dates, names and events. Will interest the few passionate about the sport, as well as all adrenaline rush and adventure seekers. To me, it gave a backdrop, a character and a soul to many of those names I looked up to when I started venturing deeper and longer in the underwater realm.

got down and hooked.......2001-10-24
New to technical diving, I found this historical perspective very interesting. Being French, I was most impressed by Burgess' firsts stories about early dives by pioneers. Each chapter recounts a Cave diving exploration history, and can be read independently. It is also well written, in an entertaining style and does not try to play it too "tekkie". The focus is on exploration. I spent a straight week nights on it, and loved it all the way down. You gonna be hooked.
A Delightful, Entertaining and an Easy Read.......2001-04-17
'Robert Burgess succeeds in conveying the excitement, eloquently painting pictures of the sights and describing the intellectual challenges and satisfactions, masterfully mixing adventure with history, sociology, archaeology and some hard-learned lessons in physics. There are chapters with unexpectedly happy endings and others detailing tragic mistakes made in this unforgiving environment... it is easy to see why this book earned a 'Book of the Year' award from Forward Magazine... As a photographer, Burgess is able to add another dimension to this book... Burgess' photos cover many decades and many caves... Overall, the book is a delight, entertaining and an easy read. It's a great vacation book, full of adventure, divided into chapters that can easily stand alone or mesh together...[Burgess] masterfully glides the reader through tales of history that cavers and non-cavers will enjoy.' Book Description
In this suspense story set in the jungles of Mexico, Mike Bryant nearly loses his life while cave diving in a deep sinkhole. Unbeknownst to him, there is treasure buried deep at the bottom and someone is willing to kill to prevent him from finding it.
Customer Reviews:
An absolutely fantastic read.......2006-06-30
"Yucatan Deep" has it all -- excitement, adventure, romance, good vs. evil, and life-changing situations. But what makes this particular book so fabulous is the way in which writer Tom Morrisey brings together so many seemingly unrelated "threads" of the story.
As the book begins, there are at least three apparently unrelated stories going on simultaneously. Yet Mr. Morrisey manages to integrate every one of them into one of the most exciting adventure stories I've read in a long time.
While the bulk of the story is about diving -- something which Mr. Morrisey writes about with incredible detail and obvious personal experience -- so many other tensions are present: cross-cultural encounters with virtually aboriginal Mayans, relational issues between Mike Bryant (the hero of the story) and his girlfriend, and several characters wrestling with the very core issues of faith and Christianity.
Once started, this is a difficult book to put down. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
Tapping the Depths.......2005-06-29
This gripping novel weaves a tale of the tensions between the most up-to-date deep-water diving and a primitive jungle cult; between the competing ambitions of two men vying for a Deep-Diving World Record and the evidence of a smuggling, drug-running ring.
The balance of technical detail is near perfect, giving fascinating glimpses of the very real dangers of a deep-water dive without getting bogged down in those details.
Woven throughout is a simple message of Hope in Christ. It barely escapes becoming preachy at times, yet that "peachiness" is an integral part of character development, not a tack-on, so almost always slips through without becoming intrusive.
This book will intrigue those with a technical bent, but still be appreciated by those bored by technical detail.
Well worth reading!

Deep moments........2004-06-08
I found myself very much enjoying this work by Tom Morrisey. There were parts where I felt he dragged it out a little too much, but it still kept the pages turning, so for the most part, it was interesting. I didn't feel like putting it down, that's for sure!
Join Mike Bryant as he goes for a record attempt, to dive Cenote X (pronounced seh-NO-tay as described in chapter) after a first attempt ends in tragedy for his friend, Pete. I thought it was interesting how a deaf woman came into play throughout the story. Mike wants to make it to the bottom of Cenote X, and Bridget (his deaf girlfriend) has a 2nd opinion. I think it is interesting how Bridget is a doctor in this as well. In the midst of all this, a man named Viktor Bellum has his own ideas, what they are, nobody knows. The person who stands out in this book is probably Elvis Hastings, surfer dude turned missionary, who has a lot of deep thought for Mike, who only wishes he had the kind of faith that Elvis has. It is very thought provoking about how we might witness to someone, when you see Elvis take something that Mike might say and turn it into his own illustration. It is awesome that Elvis is a missionary to the Mayan people and how he already uses sign language somewhat as a means of communicating.
This is a book of faith, adventure, and a search for something in the depths of Cenote X, what the Mayans call, K'uxulch'en, in their own language it means, "The Well of Sorrows." For the most part, it was awesome, but it probably could have been shortened. Other than that, I hope to see more of Tom Morrisey in the future. This is good stuff!
Great adventure novel!.......2003-06-07
This is a good book about adventure. The story revolves around a cave diver who is attempting to get to the bottom of the world's deepest sinkhole (cenote). The bottom is like 1300 feet deep and in utter blackness. On the first attempt, Mike and his partner Pete try to reach bottom only to have Pete die and Mike barely make it back. Very exciting!!! Very well written.
The book also has a host of other well developed characters: Bridget (a trauma surgeon) and Mike's love interest, a surfer dude named Elvis, and many others including another cave diver with deep and dangerous secrets of his own. This is a great read!!

Underwater thriiler.......2003-10-21
A great read! Dive in for an exciting journey to California's Channel Islands. Inspired by a dramatic true story of undersea rescue, Margaret Hoffman's thriller carries echoes of Edgar Allan Poe, as the characters find themselves trapped in an undersea cave beneath Santa Cruz Island, and are pursued by a killer.
Margaret Hoffman's research and attention to detail are evident throughout. She effectively places you in the milieu of affluent Santa Barbara. And your "theatre of the mind" will have more than enough "video footage" to experience the awesome submarine world of the Channel Islands, with all its beauty and danger.
Scuba divers, sharks, deadly undersea caves, and murder... it's all here.
dead in the water is great.......2003-10-17
when i began reading this book i could not put it down. it is the most fast paced and continuous book i've read. if you like adventure, a little romance, scuba diving and the ocean, and a good murder plot based on a true story this is for you. Margaret Hoffmans characters are so real to life and her writing is really great because she keeps you interested throughout the entire book from front cover to back. tremendously entertaining book.
Dead on the Page.......2003-10-01
This authors' writing style is so short and staccato that it more like reading a laundry list than a novel. The story itself is OK but you can get more character development and plot in a Marvel comic book. I would not recommend it.
