This book contains the most up-to-date information and is highly accurate. It does, however, suffer from a poorly organized format. Some authors cover the same information, while other important topics fall between the cracks. I would have liked to see the same organizational structure used for all 3 "types" of deer

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful reference to coping with deer problems........2005-08-15

I found the book very informative and helpful in coping with dear problems. The deer behavior section was very close to our actual observations on our property in Roche Harbor of the Washington San Juan Islands.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the topic.......2004-03-24

This is simply an excellent book that tackles a critical wildlife management issue intelligently and without politics and rhetoric. The scope of the book and the author's skill as both a gardener and a keen observer of deer antics is impressive. As a master gardener and garden designer, I use this book in almost all my consultations because the problem is so prevalent, and because Ms. Hart provides some really smart answers to customer's questions. Though I agree with the reviewer who thought the book lacked information on more exotic or esoteric species of plants, the list of deer resistant species is quite extensive in light of the other information provided. There will probably never be an exhaustive list of deer proof plants because of harsh winters and continual clearing of natural habitats to make way for housing and commercial expansion.
Ms. Harts' suggested strategy of using deer repulsive plants around more deer desirable plantings is smart. I was able to grow my beloved tulips surrounded by alliums, whose foliage emerges as the tulips start to bud. Kudos to Ms. Hart.

5 out of 5 stars Information laden and downright funny.......2000-09-07

This book is concise, well-structured and highly informative. It begins with an analysis of how deer think (if you can call it that!), and how they use their senses. The author then uses these insights to derive numerous strategies for avoiding attracting deer and deterring them if they do find your garden. These vary from what I would call defensive (avoid planting things that deer like to eat, using the exhaustive list provided as a guide - there are even some roses that deer apparently dislike!) to highly combative (electric fences, self-activated noises or sprinklers). She also offers numerous ideas for upsetting deers' reliance on their sense of smell, including stringing up highly scented soap bars, and spraying plants with homemade pepper spray or stinky egg mix! There is an edgy humor to the book that makes for a fun read. A very intelligent approach to a very exasperating problem. Buy it.

4 out of 5 stars The bible of deer resistant gardening.......2000-05-14

This book has become the bible of deer resistant gardening for good reason. I have yet to find a more thorough text regarding deer behavior, deer deterrents and, deer resistant fences. If you have a deer problem you should defiantly read this book.

The one chapter that could be improved is the one entitled "Deer-o-Scaping", which discusses landscaping with deer resistant plants. The list of deer resistant plants provided in this chapter is divided into plant categories (i.e., annuals, perennials, etc...) and delineates the zones where each plant grows, as well as the plant's soil and light requirements. While this is certainly more information than I have seen provided in most deer resistant plant lists, it nevertheless assumes the reader knows what the plant looks like and is familiar with its' habit. The novice gardener will need to reference other publications to learn more about the plants in this list before he/she can plan an attractive deer resistant garden. The experienced gardener will undoubtedly wish the deer resistance of more unusual and exotic plants were discussed.

5 out of 5 stars Advice for coping with 'deer' neighbors.......2000-01-03

Being new property & house owners in a suburban area adjacent to a deer wintering yard, this book provided us excellent advice on coping with our local deer population. We are planning a garden from scratch, and the information is very practical. It should help any gardener with deer in their area reduce their cost of resultant damage. The book deals with deer behavioural characteristics, and the likelihood of deer frequenting the property, as well as how to plan a deerproof garden. From plants that are detested by deer, to plants that will guarantee deer company: annual, perennial, shrub & tree choices are listed, including hardiness zone information. A range of strategies for keeping deer out of the garden is also included. The strategies go from fences to foul smelling substances to noise makers, and advice is given on the likelihood of success for each. An excellent tailorable reference book.

    Book Description

The story of deer management in Pennsylvania is as complex as it is controversial. From the disappearance of deer in Pennsylvania forests at the beginning of the twentieth century to the population explosion that occurred in the latter half of the century, the balance between herd size and a healthy forest has long been a difficult one. In Deer Wars, Science, Tradition, and the Battle Over Managing Whitetails in Pennsylvania , Bob Frye examines this controversy and the effect that herd management has had on all of the citizens of Pennsylvania; farmers managing deer invasions and property rights, hunters dealing with changing herd densities and ever complex restrictions, state agencies juggling the rights of hunters with the needs of commercial interests, all with stakes in the success and health of the deer herd. Now with deer harvests decreasing, Chronic Wasting Disease becoming a potential threat, and forests showing serious signs of trouble, the need for compromise from all of the players is essential, but is it possible? This well researched and engrossing book explores that question.

Well written. Shows all points of view and where they overlap and conflict.

4 out of 5 stars All We Hold Deer.......2007-01-09

The size of the whitetail deer population in Pennsylvania has been a matter of controversy for decades, and the debate is currently more emotional than ever. Here, Pennsylvania journalist Bob Frye helps clarify at least some sides of the argument. With a lack of predators, and several decades of under-hunting, deer are now severely stressing the habitat on which they depend. Frye deftly explains how dense deer populations prevent forests from regenerating. This creates severe impacts on ecosystems across Pennsylvania, and also damages the health of the deer themselves. Frye extensively examines the science of deer population, and presents the many arguments for and against management of the deer herd. He also includes very illuminating coverage of the financial damage done to farms and suburbs by browsing. Refreshingly, Frye mostly tries to let the science of deer management speak for itself. However, this book is not as impartial as it appears to be. Most of Frye's coverage is from the point of view of sport hunters. Opinions or statements from any other interest groups are introduced briefly, followed by considerably more commentary on whether hunters agree or disagree. There are several appearances of the derisive term "treehuggers" for those opposed to hunting, and Frye generally prints the statements of excessive numbers of officials and interested persons who support hunting lobby positions (which in turn makes the book very repetitive), while only offering short snapshots of all other opinions. This book is still very informative for anyone concerned about deer population issues. But Frye does not adequately cover all sides of the controversy. [~doomsdayer520~]

I TOTALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. I FEEL THAT EVERY HUNTER SHOULD READ IT. IT OPENED MY EYES AND MIND. I KNOW MANY PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH GARY AULT, BUT, AFTER READING THIS BOOK IT MAY CHANGE THEIR MIND.

5 out of 5 stars mount this book on your wall.......2006-12-19

This book is a must read for anybody concerned about the future of deer hunting in Pennsylvania. Bob and Spike did a tremendous amount of research for this book and the final product demonstrates this. I am looking forward to the follow up documentary?

    5 out of 5 stars required reading.......2006-11-10

A facinating overview of the ongoing deer management problem faced by Pennsylvania. Mr. Frye gives an unbiased account of all sides in the debate. This work should be required reading for anyone who thinks they know everything there is to know regarding the deer issue. Well researched and thoughtfully presented. Not overly scientific with tons of statistics or jargon, it's an easy and interesting read.

    Book Description

"We hope that range managers reading this book will realize that they are also wildlife managers, and that wildlife managers reading this book will realize that they are also habitat managers; in the region this book covers, rangeland and habitat are synonyms."-from the Preface

For most of the last century, range management meant managing land for livestock. The best measure of success was how well a landowner grew the grass that cattle ate. In this century, landowners look to hunting and wildlife viewing for income; rangeland is now also wildlife habitat, and landowners are managing their land not just for cattle but also for wildlife, most notably deer and quail.

Unlike other books on white-tailed deer in places where rainfall is relatively high and the environment stable, this book takes an ecological approach to deer management in the semiarid lands of Oklahoma, Texas, and northern Mexico. These are the least productive of white-tail habitats, where periodic drought punctuates long-term weather patterns. The book's focus on this landscape across political borders is one of its original and lasting contributions. Another is its contention that good management is based on ecological principles that guide the manager's thinking about:

    Habitat Requirements of White-Tailed Deer

    White-Tailed Deer Nutrition

    Carrying Capacity

    Habitat Manipulation

    Predators

    Hunting

5 out of 5 stars The book for people really interested in deer........2007-07-26

Valerius Geist puts just what his title says into understandable language; fascinating and contemplative writing. It's not the "Critt'rspeak or limited jargon study of the 'game manager'; nor a book for the 'hook & bullet crowd'. It's the popular authority for the knowledgeable or just curious and the reference for ungulate watchers. And it makes up for what valerius doen't understand about bison and pronghorn. He also sticks his neck out about human migration, aboriginal habitat manangement and other interesting tidbits.

    2 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, confusing & sloppy.......2002-09-14

As a researcher attempting to use this book as a preliminary source of data/information, I have found that Geist throws around numbers without ensuring that they match ones cited earlier or later in the text; Appendix values don't match the text; some are rounded, some not; with the sloppy citations he uses, some even appear to have been plucked out of thin air. The appendix is essentially unreadable: citations, data & notes are presented in the most illogical & unintuitive format possible. Plus there are plenty of typos scattered throughout, making you question the publisher's editing skills. Granted some of the text is very interesting & informative but here again, poor formatting thwarts the reader's efforts to understand.
I was originally thrilled to find this book but now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Synthesis, Penetrating Understanding.......2001-12-21

Having known Val Geist for 3 decades, and having followed the development of his thinking, I impatiently watched this particular book take shape over a third of that period. A long wait, but well worth it.

Beyond the sheer breadth of this study of all the world's "deer" is the depth of Geists' thinking, which always challenges, intrigues and fascinates the reader. Superb illustrations add aesthetic beauty while greatly facilitating comparisons and contrasts between species and genera.

There has never been such a thorough comparison and contrast between the various species, putting them all into a comprehensive phylogenetic perspective, while contrasting the diverse habitats that shaped their ecological radiation.

Any biologist with an interest in large mammals, from behavioral, ecological or evolutionary standpoints will find this book an exceptional addition to the library.

Yet, as technically valuable as this book is, it is also highly readable. Geist's style is so clear that the main ideas can be followed even by readers who have to skip past the more technical sections.

5 out of 5 stars Best book around about deer.......2000-06-18

This is the only book I found that covered all deer, and it was fascinating (although quite technical in places) and well-referenced. I work at a zoo that has several species of deer. This book gave me a deeper understanding of various species, why they are found where they are found, and the impact humans have had on deer populations. It stimulated my curiousity in other areas, and the references are allowing me to dig more deeply into various topics. I will be referring back to this book often and I recommend it highly to anyone interested in deer, evolutionary strategies, or ecology.

The title of the book is very misleading. There is very little information about mule deer in this book. I was expecting a book with detailed information on behavior and habitat. What you get is the authors' memories of hiking through wilderness taking pictures. There is some information of Mule Deer, but nothing you cannot get from a magazine article.
