    Book Description

“Jane Kirkpatrick has, almost literally, created her own genre of fiction. Her books enfold…whisper, ‘Let me tell you about a woman who…’ They find a secret place in each of us and bring it gently to the surface.”
    –Salem Statesman Journal

Suzanne felt the tears press at her eyes as the dream-state drifted away–taking with it the sight of the man she loved. Awake, she blinked back the tears. This was her life now. The sounds of the women and oxen, those were real. And the darkness–her darkness. She lay inside it, resigned. She was not a wife reaching out for her husband but a widow, a blind widow, wistful and full of desire.

FACING CHALLENGES AND LOSS, A COMMUNITY OF EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN FIGHT TO OVERCOME THE PAIN OF THE PAST – AND EMBRACE THE FUTURE.

When blind and widowed Suzanne Cullver reaches California with a group of women who have survived tragedy on the Oregon Trail, she sets her mind on doing for herself all that must be done. Though she cannot see, she rejects offers of assistance, unwittingly risking her children’s safety – and her own.

Her companions blindly falter as well, held hostage by their own pasts. As Suzanne attempts to control her life in Shasta City, Ruth defends against past errors, failing to see how she limits love. Meanwhile, Mazy’s vision seems to be permanently clouded by her late husband’s betrayal. But when a young stagedriver risks all for a Wintu Indian, his life becomes entangled with the turnaround women – and together they are changed forever as they discover that No Eye Can See all the good God has in store for those who love Him.

    5 out of 5 stars A Second Incredible Story..........2007-02-23

Jane Kirkland brings you further into this tale of these widowed women. They make new lives for themselves, and their stories are all unique, but yet melded into a family. This book won't disappoint you, and you will be sure to want to read the next book in the series.

Jane Kirkland has won my eyes over with her books--they all are rich in trueisms and vivid pictures that she paints as she takes you on her journey. Living the the Pacific Northwest--I can assure you, it's pretty much as she says! Thanks Jane!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Author.......2007-02-12

Jane Kirkpatrick is a little known author with great stories. The book does not make much sense if you have not read tghe first of this series, "All together in one place." Very worth reading. relaxing, entertaining, and very well written. She makes you want to get the next in the series just to see what happens next.

5 out of 5 stars No Eye Can See.......2004-08-26

It has been years since I have found a book this enjoyable to read.
I am so glad this book is one in a series. There is a lot wisdom in the characters dialog. I am a new fan of Jane Kirkpatrick's. -

5 out of 5 stars Great series to read.......2003-07-30

This was a fantastic series to read. I couldn't put it down, you actually feel like you know all the women in the series. You hope that Tipton will survive her loses, and you hope for good things for Mazy and Ruth. I can't wait to read more by Ms Kirkpatrick. She makes you feel like you are there with them.

4 out of 5 stars No eye can see.......2003-06-04

This is the marvelous sequel to the story of widowed women heading west.

Jane Kirkpatrick draws a detailed and very realistic picture of the life and circumstances people had to face in California during the gold rush. The writing is brilliant. She did not make too many references to the first volume of the series. Only where necessary, she placed little hints that refreshed my memory about what had happened before.

The characters are painted as strong as we were used in "All Together In One Place". The life of every one of these women develops differently, yet is interwoven with that of the others. Apparently, there were too many women in order to keep up with all their stories, since they are NOT all together in one place anymore.

Although I am aware that this could have filled a book on its own, I missed to learn more about the new lives of the "Celestials" - the newly wed Asian women. This way it seems as if they hadn't been fully accepted members of the widows' group. In the first book, however, I had the feeling that the Asian women grew more and more self-confident and independent, contrary to their own culture.

On the other hand, in my eyes, the story about the relationship between Zane Randolph and the women Ruth and Suzanne takes too long to evolve and to climax. There are too many hints and repetitions about his insanity. This space could have easily been used for the Celestials.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginning Reader.......2006-06-11

Because of my husband's work, we have unfortunately had to move around quite a bit. I was looking for English books for my 8 year old that would be at her reading level yet would be engaging. This fit the bill.
My daughter eagerly read the book (and has read it several times now) and has begun to ask me many questions about Helen Keller, braille, blindness and deafness, etc. Marvellous! I was quite pleased with the results.
I did not purchase this book as an historical treatise and so did not expect it to go at length into Helen Keller's life. But my daughter could relate to the story of a young girl who is presented with tremendous challenges and not only overcomes but succeeds in living a fruitful, rewarding and exemplary life. Because it is written in a "chewable" English, she didn't give up on the book. I found this book to be very positive.
The "Step Into Reading" series on the whole I found to be very good. Historical topics tend to be chosen rather than "fairy" stories for content. The writing style is challenging but not out-of-reach. And the books are engaging.
I do not hesitate to recommend this book for 6 - 8 year olds. Encouraging girls to read about positive female role models - - I do think Helen Keller would approve.

5 out of 5 stars The brave deaf and blind girl.......2004-06-04

It was about a girl name Helen Keller. She was born on June,27 1880. She lived on a farm in Alabama. But one day she had a high fever and cause her to go blind and deaf. Her parents couldn't tell if she was hungry, tried, or thrist. When she wake up in the middle of the night she thought it was moring and cryed for her breakfast. Finally her parents ask for help then this young lady ask name Anne Sullivan. Anne was once almost blind but she had several operations to help her see again. At first Helen gave her problems. Whatever Helen did to Anne she would do the same to her. Later Helen learned to listen to Anne. She also learned how to do sign language to deaf people or people that can see and hear. Helen's parents were very proud of her because she learned how to do many things that a person like her couldn't do. Helen later went to college and became famous. Then she passed away before eieght-first birthday.

I recommend this book because it tells about how a girl can do something with her life even though she's blind.

    3 out of 5 stars so-so story about a great woman.......2004-01-05

Any information children get about Helen Keller is probably better than none. The title Courage in the Dark, is oh so cliche. If she was only blind, she wouldn't have been so well known. Blindness only cut her off from objects, it was her deafness that isolated her from communication. The combination of being blind and deaf defined challenges for her. The book gives the play-by-play about her life with little details. She earned a college degree reading fingerspelling into her palm. This was a period few when women even went to college. An enormous deal should have been made about her never giving up. There are probably better books about Helen Keller and I would encourage anyone to learn more about Deaf Culture. It is quite amazing how they fought for the same rights everyone else had. If you are looking for information on people like Helen Keller, try the deaf-blind lions club in your area.

    1 out of 5 stars A Shameful Book!.......2002-10-13

The authors and publishers should be ashamed. Helen Kellers's life was NOT simply filled with "silence and darkness", as the authors write. She was a fighter for women's rights, including the right to vote. She denounced the murder of coal miners by John D. Rockefeller. She helped found the American Civil Liberties Union. She worked tirelessly for peace. She lived a long, full NOISY 88 years.

This book reduces her to a permanent teenager, and an image on a postage stamp. This book misinforms young people, and gives them a ridiculous idea of what Helen Keller was really all about.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2002-07-04

I first read this book to my daughter when she was 5 years old, and she has been fascinated with Helen Keller ever since. We have read and reread this book numerous times, and she never loses interest. This led to buying other Helen Keller books and an interest in learning sign language. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a young child. It's a great book for getting a child interested in true stories/biographies!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and inspiring story.......2004-05-12

Bill Irwin and Orient leads us down the trail over the mountains and into the forest unlike any other author. We see what he feels and senses around him. With every step we walk along with Bill and Orient, and we camp along with them and met some wonderful people along the way helping Bill and Orient along the trail. Wonderful story. Would love to meet Bill and Orient.

5 out of 5 stars MAKES YOU STOP AND THINK.......2003-12-19

The story told in this book is truly mind-boggling, on several fronts. First, there is the adventure of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Secondly, there is the story of a BLIND man doing it! Third, is the whole topic of seeing eye dogs and the bond that develops between them and their owner. It blew me away, that this dog was able to do what he did, thus enabling Bill to complete this hike. Last but not least, it shows what is possible if we put our faith in God. Most of us rely on our own selves--Bill put his faith and trust in God in order to complete this journey. The book is easy to read, short chapters (which I like--makes it easier to pick up and put down), written from the heart. A great gift book!

5 out of 5 stars A well-told story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit.......2001-08-12

I just finished reading "Blind Courage" for the second time. Bill Irwin's story offers a timeless story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit as he was the first "blind" person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. I write "blind" because Bill may not have the sense of eyesight, but throughout the book has great insight into persons he meets along his walk, and relates the greatest insight into his own self and his strengths and weaknesses, on a hike (he was not an experienced hiker) all possible by his enduring faith in our Lord and his confidence in his Seeing Eye dog, Orient. The book flows well, doesn't sound "preachy", and reads quickly--almost too quickly as we want to hear more. This is a great story by a great man who spent his first almost 50 years in turmoil, broken relationships, and losing his eyesight, but he finds himself and encourages and uplifts others along his hike. By the way, if you have an opportunity to hear him speak, Bill Irwin is an outstanding public speaker with a great message and is a very friendly individual. In summary, read this book if you are looking for modern heroes and uplifting people of faith doing the "impossible" regardless of whether you enjoy "outdoor/hiking/camping" books or not.

5 out of 5 stars A step of Faith !.......2000-01-15

My review of this book is one of pure joy and inspiration. From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it had a great message written in it. I meet Bill and Orient when they came to the Lititz Grace Brethern Church. Even after reading his story and hearing his testomony it was totally indescribleable. Bill is a wonderful speaker and Orient is just the most lovable dog you could ever know. To have a dog like that which leads you over that terrain from Georgia to Maine is a true friend.

They both had a good friend in the Lord and he truly lead them on a spititrual path and from all of this a remarkable story. Again I personally give this book FIVE STARS.

5 out of 5 stars This book and this mans story can change your life!.......1999-05-28

This man has an incredible story to share with you. It is a book that you cannot put down once you start reading it. It will give you encouragement and hope. He still hikes parts of the trail every year encouraging the people out there today.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for young minds.......2003-09-22

The first reviewer forgot to read the title; it is called "Young Helen Keller" so it definitely should end with her youth.
I am a third grade teacher and ALL of my students found it fascinating, so I am getting extra copies for future years.
This story is an excellent example of getting ahead against very large odds, and the way it is presented makes it easy for young seven or eight year olds to understand it.
The only reason I do not give it five stars is the weak illustrations.

    5 out of 5 stars Get a clue.......2003-01-26

This is a book for young children. It is not a college level book. The previous reviewer needs to get a clue about the reading capabilities of an 8 year old. Not many are interested in reading 300 page biographies.

1 out of 5 stars Helen Keller Would Find This Shameful!.......2002-10-13

She lived to be 88. She was a socialist and a suffragist. She called for peace in Europe to prevent World War I. She denounced the murder of coal minors in Colorado. She donated funds to the NAACP. She helped found the American Civil Liberties Union. She proved that blind and deaf people have a place in the political life of the nation.

This "first" biography ends with her going to college. How would you feel about having your life defined that way?

Eight-year-olds now, deeply they know, that people grow and change. That's what makes life interesting to an 8-year-old. This book infantilizes Helen Keller, freezing her as a "permanent child". My kids deserve much better than this book offers, especially if it is going to be short!

        Book Description

Bill Griffiths lost both hands and both eyes when he was a prisoner of the Japanese in Java in 1942.

This book tells the story of how he overcame these two shattering handicaps, either one of which might have qualified him to spend the rest of his life quietly in a home for the disabled. But Bill had no intention of allowing himself to become an object of pity and it was not long after his return to civilian life that he began to make it clear that, even if he had no hands and no eyes, he still had his own two feet and he certainly intended to stand on them. Inevitably life has not been without its ups and downs, and he certainly Bill could not have got where he has without the care and devotion of Alice, his wife. Their story is one of remarkable courage, told with no trace of bitterness and with a generous helping of laughter. It is a measure of the man that Bill can end his story with the words, "I've been lucky"!

The Color of Courage is about a young girl who learns to see the world despite her blindness.... or perhaps, because of it.

Although this novel is a work of fiction, there are many truths within. The characters were created from my imagination, but there are real people like Mrs. Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Lake, Madison, and if you are lucky you may have had the opportunity to know friends like Anne and Myla.

I began writing this story when I was thirteen years old, and completed it one week before my fifteenth birthday. Although I am not blind, my vision without glasses is very poor, so many of the diving scenes were drawn from my own experiences. I also didn't have the opportunity to know friends like Myla and Anne, but I knew they existed, if only in my imagination. Completing this novel was like saying good-bye to my best friends.

Besides writing everyday, I read, and play the cello. Promise and I live in the mountains of northern Pennsylvania with our family, including Little Bear.

The Color Of Courage is a powerful debut novel by sixteen-year-old young woman of enormous talent and promise, and who began writing her novel at the age of thirteen! Set Northwest Canada, The Color Of Courage is about the life and daily travails of a blind girl who learns to better understand the world around her. The loss of vision is balanced by the growth of wisdom and inner strength in this touching and heartfelt story. Hand-drawn sketches in black and white, and a few in color add a personal touch to this remarkable novel, one that deserves as wide a readership as possible.
