    Book Description

Large volumes of produced water are generated and discharged to the coastal and ocean waters worldwide from offshore oil and gas production facilities. There is concern that the chemicals in the produced water may harm marine ecosystems. This book summarizes the bioavailability and marine ecotoxicology of metal and organic contaminants that may occur in oil well produced water at concentrations significantly higher than those in ambient seawater. The contaminants of concern include arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, radium isotopes, zinc, monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, and bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate.

The first part of the book is a detailed discussion of the chemical composition of produced water from offshore oil wells worldwide and its fates following discharge to the ocean. The remaining chapters of the book summarize the current scientific literature on the sources and distributions in the ocean of each of the contaminants of concern and their bioaccumulation and toxicity to marine organisms.

This book will be of value to: environmental scientists in the oil and gas industry; marine toxicologists and ecological risk assessors in academia, government, and industry; government regulatory agencies concerned with marine environmental protection.

The book advances the concept that bioavailability evaluation must be included in all ecological risk assessments and other environmental assessments of chemical contaminants in marine and freshwater ecosystems.

        Description:
The occurrence and distribution of alkylphenols (APs, i.e., 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP) and 4-nonlyphenol isomers (4-NP)) in oysters (Crassostrea gigas), snails (Thais clavigera), coastal water and coastal sediments of the western coast of southern Taiwan are investigated. Alkylphenols were present in all matrices of interest: in water, ranging from 61 to 370ng/l, in sediments, ranging from 27 to 190ng/g, and in biota samples (i.e., oyster and snail), ranging from 20 to 5190ng/g. Statistical analysis indicated that the probability distribution of most determined concentrations in oyster and snail samples was log-normal distribution. The bioaccumulation of APs resulted in a seasonal variation with respect to their compositions and concentrations in oyster and snail samples. For oysters, concentrations of APs in winter exceeded those in summer. In contrast, those in snails in summer exceeded those in winter. Estimated biomagnification factors of APs from snails to oysters ranged from 1.4 to 4.3 in summer, and 0.5 to 0.8 in winter on the dry weight basis. The results suggested that seasonally mediated physiological changes, such as dilution caused by growth, biotransformation and metabolism, may affect the bioaccumulation of APs in according to season and organism.

It seems fitting that the most successful college basketball coach since John Wooden is named Summit, because that's exactly where she's taken the women's program at the University of Tennessee. In Raise the Roof, she recounts the Lady Vols' astonishing 1997-98 campaign. The team went 39-0, won its third straight NCAA crown and sixth overall under her direction, and, most importantly to Summitt, "played as if they had no internal or physical boundaries." If the team's unprecedented success is the engine that runs Summitt's story, the fuel that powers it goes a good deal deeper than what happened on the court.

"With this team," she admits, "I was different." From two-time All-American forward Chamique Holdsclaw to the four freshmen from broken homes on whose talents the future rested, Summitt realized early that she had to approach them differently than she had any collection of Lady Vols before, and she did; she cared about them differently, yelled at them differently, and reveled with them differently, ultimately tapping into her own emotions in ways she never had before. She, and they, sought to set new standards for themselves, and for their sport. The record shows they did; Summitt details how and why. "Throughout the season," she writes, "I had the curious sensation of something rising." In the end, she rises to the occasion by identifying and preserving that "something." --Jeff Silverman

                  Book Description

"It wasn't a team.  It was a tent revival."

So says Pat Summitt, the legendary coach whose Tennessee Lady Vols entered the 1997-98 season aiming for an almost unprecedented "three-peat" of NCAA championships.  Raise the Roof takes you right inside the locker room of her amazing team, whose inspired mixture of gifted freshmen and seasoned stars produced a standard of play that would change the game of women's basketball forever.

The 1997-98 season started innocently enough.  One Saturday in August, four young freshmen--Semeka Randall, Tamika Catchings, Ace Clement and Teresa Geter--arrived on the Tennessee campus to begin their college careers.  Welcoming them were a number of players from the previous year, including Chamique Holdsclaw and Kellie Jolly.  But that night, in a sign of things to come, a simple pickup game turned into an amazing display of basketball brilliance--freshmen against established players, and with barely a shot missed by either side.  Suddenly Pat Summitt glimpsed the future: fast, aggressive and hugely talented.  This might be the team she'd worked her whole career to coach.

As the season got under way, other dramas unfolded.  After one emotional team meeting, Summitt realized that many on the team were playing for something more than just the glory of the game: all four freshmen, for example, came from single-parent homes, and the tough circumstances of the majority of the other players seemed to add an extra edge to their desire to win it all.  Further, Chamique Holdsclaw, widely regarded as the greatest female player ever, was being dogged by questions about turning pro--and she seemed reluctant to rule it out.  Meanwhile, another member of the team began to notice the unwelcome attentions of a fan, who soon turned out to be a full-fledged stalker.

All this was behind the scenes; out on the court, the win column was swelling with every game: 8-0, 15-0, 21-0.  As 1997 turned into 1998, Pat Summitt began privately to admit that this team had changed her: these kids were so lovable, funny and eager to please that she simply had to let them into her heart.  Along the way, the Lady Vols were redefining what women were capable of, trading in old definitions of femininity for new ones--in short, they were keeping score.  And by the time they entered the NCAA Final Four tournament in Kansas City, Summitt found herself believing the impossible: despite all the distractions, the 1997-98 Lady Vols could go undefeated, and, in doing so, raise the roof off the sport of women's basketball.

Packed with the excitement of a season on the brink of perfection and filled with the comedy and tragedy of one year in the life of a basketball team, Raise the Roof will have readers cheering from the bench for a team of all-conquering players and their astonishing coach.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Three-Peat Season.......2007-04-12

Read about the 1997-98 basketball season when the lady Vols aimed for a three-peat. The history-making season comes to life in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great sports book to read!.......2007-04-04

"When I said I wouldn't write another book (after Reach for the Summit), I didn't know about this team. I had no idea what a remarkable story the Lady Vols would prove to be, and how much they would accomplish. I didn't know what they would do to me. Usually, it's the coach who changes the team. But in this case, it was the team that changed the coach." (From Raise the Roof)

While this book is all about the Lady Vols 1997-98 season, when Tennessee faced the very real possibility of going for a "Three-peat" (winning 3 NCAA championships in back-to-back years, an incredible accomplishement), it's also a book about the people who made up that season, from the returning veterans (including the amazingly talented Chamique Holdsclaw, before she turned pro) to the "Fab Freshmen Four," and the coaching staff.

This is not a book about the technique or skills or drills that it takes to play basketball at the level of the Lady Vols or try to win another championship. Or necessarily an inside look at what exactly drives Coach Summitt or makes her one of the winning-est coaches in any sport at any level of play.

It is a book about the heart and emotions behind the play on the court. About long trips to play games. About how to make a team anew and creating a new family with them. About the significant games they played in that season and what it took to win them. About the pure fun of spending time together. About the families involved. About the losses these young women had already endured in their lives prior to coming to Tennessee, and how these losses might have motivated them in a particular way to become the type of athletes and students who they became. About a personal loss Coach Summitt experienced that year.

And it's about Coach Summitt, who in the face of her new players, realized that her own coaching style had to change and that she would have to engage differently with this team because of who they were.

The story is written in a a simple format for describing sports: Start with what we know: A truly magnificent season and recreate it. From the first moment when the incoming freshmen players arrive on campus and, after moving into their rooms, play their first game with the other players to feel each other out. Move into the first team meeting of the year. Begin building for the reader the sense that Coach Summitt had that this team had something special in them. Chronicle the small moments making up significant games played that year. Focus on each starting player, including brief interviews with them and their parents. End with the championship game.

By reading this book, you become a part of that history-making season and, in turn, learn much about the heart and emotion and soul of the people involved in that season.

Truly a great book to read!

                  5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2006-05-13

Even better than Pat Summitt's first book! It's thoughtful and well-written. And even though you already know how it ends, it's wonderful from start to finish. I couldn't put it down!

                  3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2007-09-27

No one will read this but anyhoo...Raise High the Roof Beam is vintage Salinger and gives us some real insight into the Glass family. The second half I found frustrating to read and really feel like it is some convoluted monument to Salinger himself. Seymour an Intro seems intent on extolling the virtues of Seymour the poet. It is rather odd though that not one poem is shared. It is a lot like attending a concert and having them talk about what the music would be like the whole time. This book (Seymour an Intro) is more of an essay on what would make a great poet. Oh well, Franny and Zooey, The Nine Stories, and of course Catcher in the Rye were fantastic. I guess you can't be ON all the time.

                  5 out of 5 stars Salinger's Best.......2007-04-10

I did not think anyone could beat Catcher in the Rye in its quirky yet real humor. But I was wrong. Salinger's Raise High is even better. The characters are so well sketched out that you feel like you are sitting with them and the madness of Catcher lingers in them. A MUST buy for Salinger lovers.

2 out of 5 stars Crease By Crease.......2006-07-12

J.D. Salinger's last published work is more than 43 years old now, and still stirs many in the same absent way Seymour Glass animates his brother Buddy in this pair of stories first published in 1963. Are both cases of delusional devotion?

In the first story, "Raise High The Roof Beam, Carpenters," originally published in The New Yorker in 1955, we get what amounts to Salinger's first deep-dish treatment of the Glass family saga ("Zooey" saw print later, and previous stories featuring the Glasses were far less insular) as Buddy shows up for Seymour's wedding, only to find Seymour stood up his bride. In the second piece, 1959's "Seymour: An Introduction," Buddy foregoes any semblance of plot to explain who Seymour was.

Like a lot of other people, I am put off by the convoluted nature of "Seymour," as well as the explanations of those who defend it. Actually, there could be something to the idea of writing a plotless story, using characters like the Glasses people know from other works, but this is assuredly not it. Salinger too obviously indulges himself, spouting contempt at his generation and his critics, throwing up lame jokes and referencing obscure Japanese poets as a smokescreen to conceal his literary, intellectual, and metaphysical nakedness.

"What a marvelous convenience it would be if writers could let themselves describe their characters' clothes, article by article, crease by crease," Salinger writes in the role of Buddy, pretty much summing up the approach of "Seymour" as well as its underlying failure. His interest in his subject is not only all-consuming, it is not all that deep.

"Raise High" is a better story, though that's not saying much. "Franny And Zooey," the previously published Salinger book, also combined a better story with a weaker one, but there at least you got one terrific story in "Franny," a bold, empathetic tale of power and focus. "Raise High" doesn't know where it's going, and is in no hurry to get there. You get nice asides, like when Buddy sees an old chair and remembers a beloved bulldog, long dead, who slept there and left his chewmarks. There's also some arresting ambiguity, as when Buddy reads Seymour's journal and we get maybe a suggestion of unease at some apparent insanity.

But "Roof Beam" doesn't end so much as fizzle away, with Buddy snoozing in an empty apartment after the mystery of Seymour's absence has been resolved via an unseen phone call. Emptyness is a recurrent theme in Salinger's Glass writings, here as in "Franny & Zooey," where various Glasses are often seen in isolation thinking or writing about absent kin. For such a happy family, there's an overwhelming sadness about the Glasses that suggests Salinger found himself in a bit of a dead end with them, one from which he never emerged. Further evidence of this can be found in the web-available "Hapsworth 16, 1924," Salinger's last public blast, published in The New Yorker in 1965.

Salinger was one of the most important American writers of our lifetime, not to mention a seminal figure of our culture, but his greatness lies elsewhere, not here. Read this only if you are a Salinger completist, or else interested in the price genius can extract from its recipients.

3 out of 5 stars Carpenters a great Salinger story, Seymour not so much.......2006-07-03

Raise High the roof beams is a standard Glass tale involving Buddy attending Seymour's wedding in 1942. It is a different look into the Glass family, depicting Buddy's interactions with non-family members, as opposed to the other stories. Seymour: An Introduction I did not enjoy as much. It is longwinded scatological and excruciating to read at times, there are far to many run-ons and poor segues, and you can see that Salinger tries to hard to showcase the narrator as a "conflicted writer". It differs from Salinger's other works as more of a philosophical statement, instead of a straight-up story with philosophical undertones, and this is where Salinger's talents are lacking. Where Vonnegut and Kerouac found the balance of story jumping, and mass dialogue, Salinger comes off as more of an annoyance. The first portion being a jumble of "Hemmingwayesque" rants, I often found myself skipping the quotations (which greatly benefits the story), and footnotes. The best portions are the physical description of Seymour as well as his athletic prowess in the 2nd half of the story. A must read for Salinger fans none the less, not his best work, but there is still some brilliance within the pages. (More so Roof beams then the latter)

                  4 out of 5 stars Half of it's a tough undertaking..........2005-12-31

...which doesn't make the experience any less rewarding. Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters is a complete joy...and like the other Glass stories, a fun part of the family puzzle. Seymour: An Introduction feels less fulfilling. While it provides much information that helps the Glass-family-follower, much of it seems unformed, rambling and rawly philosophical. Nothing wrong with that unless you'll feel more rewarded by an actual story in the second half of this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Salinger at His Best.......2007-07-24

(This review is based on the Penguin Edition, paperback.)

Much like "Franny & Zooey", the book that comes right before this one, "Raise" is divided in two stories, and that "Seymour: An Introduction" is not a subtitle to the former, it's the second story of the book. Before you even consider reading this volume, you must have read "Nine Stories" and "Franny & Zooey"; well, it's not that you couldn't enjoy them in the wrong order, but it would pain my little heart if you read them in an anachronological way. You may consider reading "The Catching in the Rye" before as well, but it's not required.

Talking of which, "Raise", like the preceding volumes, doesn't use the same tone as "Catcher"; not at all. The narrator of these two stories is Buddy Glass, and he's one wordy fellow. The first story "Raise", is one of the best I ever read by Salinger; it is fantastically written, with that ever-rich style Salinger so well masters, and it honestly is hilarious. But not the obvious hilarious, it's subtle, but so funny, and so profound at the same time. It's a pure joy to read and that definitely makes Salinger one of my favourite writers of all times, and God knows if he has some fierce competition to deal with.

The overall story is about the Glass family, as in many of the stories of "Nine Stories" and as in "Franny & Zooey", which is why you should definitely have read those two books before you get to this one.

As in the precedent book - "F & Z" - the plots are minimal, but that's not what matters the most. Even though little happens, a lot happens, really. And it's just so good, I can't tell you enough. I'm sure that it won't please every reader out there, but if you have read other books by Salinger and loved his style, wittiness, and heart, this book will be a must-read to you.

The second story, "Seymour", challenges the conventions of story-telling and at times is very confusing. It's definitely not the same style as the first story, but it's worth reading. It, too, is a pleasure. And you get to know more about the Glass family, and that alone is worth the effort that the text may sometimes put you through. It's part of the fun, though, and it makes for an original read.

So if you feel ready for clumsy wedding partes, Japanese poetry, reclusive teachers living in the woods, women with metal in their voices, soldiers with never-ending coughs, and cryptic quotes written with soap on the mirror of the bathroom, this is the book for you!

Grab your tool kit and put on your hard hat-there's a house to build! It starts with drawing up the floor plans and ends with laying down a welcome mat, but in between there are lots of things to do. Children will love following all the steps as bulldozers clear the land and cement mixers pour the foundation. Then it's time to put up the walls, install the plumbing, nail down the roof shingles, and hang the doors. Bright, humorous illustrations capture all the details around the construction site as a busy family lends a hand (and sometimes a paw!) to build their dream house.

                          Illustrated by Elwood H. Smith.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful, Stylish Tale with Energy and Verve........2006-11-06

I loved the look of "Raise the Roof!": It has the energy of 1930's Disney animation, and a scruffy energy that made me think of a very sanitized R. Crumb. The pictures and the "cast" have an original, rhythmic feel to them, it's as if the pictures rhyme as well as the words!

We start with eventually turns out as a trick. A couple very busily draw blueprints, while their dog holds a portfolio titled "doghouse plans," and a book, "How to Build a Doghouse" lies on the floor next to his food bowl. Wacky geometrically-shaped details decorate each picture: Sharp-edged bushes, circular flowers that look like wood, and every where dots andtiny circles that add texture and the aforementioned scruffy dynamism to the backgrounds. The people and their dog have that rounded, puffy look that makes them look energetic and slightly unpredictable, as if they're going to burst out in song at any minute. Illustrator Elwood H. Smith varies the perspective, from scene-setting longshots to close-ups (likea series of pipes) that are almost abstract.

Anastasia Suen's verse is tightly constructed and similarly energetic. She describes the house-building with enough detail to make it realistic, but leaves out unessential descriptions that would dilute her focused story-telling. She introduces various subcontractors (e.g., an electrician, the cement guy) to increase interest, and, most importantly, makes the dog a co-equal in the house building. (even though, he's sometimes a little mixed-up!) Still, there's an interesting incongruity that young audiences might begin to detect: We saw that this was planned as a doghouse, and the pooch even dreams of one, but the interior and exterior dimenstions look awfully dog-gone big! "Put in sinks" (there's a great detail of the dog straining at a wrench) and "set the tile" (here the dog gets his paw stuck to one), "roll out carpet mile by mile." What kind of a doghouse is this, anyway?

Suen and Smith answer this on the last few pages, and anyone who has a dog will smile in recognition. WARNING, SPOILER AHEAD: They've built both a full size house AND a doghouse, but it's clear where the spirited dog will live: He sleeps in the big house with his people, and there's a "FOR RENT" sign on the little doghouse next to it! This is a fun, good-natured, and cleverly humorous book that excels in both story and illustration.

5 out of 5 stars House Goes Up............2003-06-20

"Make a plan. Count the feet. Clear the land on this street..." It's time to raise the roof and build that dream house. From the planning, pouring concrete, sawing and hammering wood, laying pipes and wiring, to drywalling, hanging windows and doors, painting, carpeting and tiling, Anastasia Suen details all the things that need to be done before a house is ready to be lived in. Her rhyming text, written in short, simple sentences is perfect for the youngest "construction workers" always ready to build with pretend tools and hard hats. But it's Elwood Smith's bold, bright, and clever cartoon-like illustrations that really make this picture book a stand out. Each two page spread is rich in vivid color, engaging humor, and wonderful eye-catching details. "Plant the garden. Water the grass. The house is ready. We're done at last!" Raise The Roof is definitely a preschool crowd pleaser.
