great book.......2007-03-24
This is a great book . I have all the Benoit books and dvds. I think this is the best of the Benoit books. There is so much info in these books it's not right out front , it's between the lines but be assured its there. Tracking is regional but the Whitetail info is not. I have learned more about mature Whitetails from the Benoit books and dvds than any other source. Larry's the man no doubt but Lanny Benoit may be the best pure deer hunter alive. Theres a little horn tooting in the book but as someone once said " If you can do it it ain't braggin ". I have Hal Bloods book too it is also very very good. If you buy just one book on tracking buy this one or Hals.
Average Book........2004-11-02
The book does a good job outlining the tracking methods that the Benoits use to consistently harvest large bucks. There are also several interesting stories of deer hunting adventures within the book.
These tracking methods are regional in nature and not very useful in the midwest where I primarily hunt. For anyone who hunts from a stand, this book will be a dissapointment.
I read the book from my local library rather than purchasing it and I am glad that I did.
Overall, it is a good read but not worth the money unless you hunt in the northeast like the Benoits.
If you are stump sitter, this book is not for you.......2003-02-04
If you track or stalk deer then you can learn a lot from this book. The Benoit's are quite remarkable with their year over year successes. However, if you are a stand hunter or hunt in private land areas that don't allow tresspassers then this book is basically worthless other than the nice pictures in it.
Tracking Big Bucks on Snowy Days.......2003-01-28
This is one of the best and most unique whitetail hunting books I've read. The classic and now out-of-print "How to Bag the Biggest Buck of Your Life," did a great job of describing the Benoit tracking method. This newest book is even better.
"Big Bucks the Benoit Way" is an excellent presentation of how the Benoits hunt. The Benoits are almost exclusively trackers, and they base their techniques on what their vast experience has proven to work best: not on the theories of others. This independent thinking makes this a very refreshing book, and their dozens of 200-pound plus bucks prove that they know what they are doing.
This book is loaded with great photos of big bucks and the Benoits in their trademark green and black wool jackets. There's plenty of shots of sagging meat poles, the deep woods on snowy days, and the tracks and rubs of big bucks.
Most valuable though, is the great information on how the Benoits find, identify, and then follow the track of a heavy buck until they successfully bag him. While few of us will ever be so spectacularly successful using these methods, all of us can learn from this book. I've successfully used these same Benoit methods to track down and bag trophy bucks from Montana to Wisconsin.
Hunters who enjoy this book share a kinship in understanding the magic of the deep woods and a fresh tracking snow and the smoking hot track of a big buck. If you are that type of hunter, you will like this book.

This series is flat, lifeless, precious.......2001-03-03
Each book is not a story so much as a scene from a department store window. The stories have no plot to speak of. The characters have no personality at all. Production values are high, and my daughter was interested in a glimpse of life in another place and time. But these books are so much less than they could have been. Bide your time and get the originals instead.
I wish there were more like this!!.......2001-02-06
My 3 year old daughter loves her "Laura Books" and can't wait till night so she can hear another. I fell in love with the novels when I was a little girl and am so happy that I can share the stories with my little girl. The stories are easy to read. I have almost every one and plan on getting all of them.
Wonderful way to start reading Little House Books.......2000-05-25
I've been a fan of Little House books since I was in second grade. With this series made for young readers, I can start reading my favorite books to my niece before she is even in school. This book in particular was a very endearing story about a mama deer and her baby. Madelyn loved it! I thought the illustrations would make Garth Williams proud.

The best book ever.......2007-05-26
The story of Tracker is a very good one and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good heartwarming book. The plot of this book has to do with a boy who has to deal with the fact that his grandfather is dying and that he has already lost all his other family except his grandmother. He is a simple boy and lives in the country and has many chores but still has to go to school like every other kid. He has to haul out the manure from the cows with their team of horses when he sees this doe. Now normally when he sees a deer this close to deer season they are spooked and run away but this one is not afraid and just sits there and looks at him and he can't figure out what is so different about this deer. Of course like any boy his age he will go deer hunting but this year is different, this year he will have to go by himself instead of with his grandfather for support. He polishes his rifle the night before and has his place he is going to hunt all picked out but he don't know how great of a journey it is going to be. He goes out and his spot is perfect because the deer come fleeing out of the timber from the predators that try to kill them. He gets up in the cold winter morning early in the morning and does all his chores. He loves the smell of the cows and all the good things a farm kid enjoy. He gets done and goes out. He sees the same deer that he saw earlier and tracks her for a very long time and when he finally gets there. Well, you will have to just wait and see for yourself. But like I said earlier this book is good for anyone. Boys, girls, older people, younger people, everyone can see the goodness of this story once they read it and get the true meaning of what Gary Paulsen wanted us to get from this story.
J Reviews-It's No Newberry.......2007-03-02
Reviewed By Cassady of Jay Reviews
Watching, waiting, slowly he lays the rifle on his shoulder. All else leaves his mind, there is only him, and the doe. He takes aim at her graceful head, finger on the frozen trigger, and then... Bang. Bang, exactly how John Borne's life started out that cold winter somewhere near the edge of Louisiana. But something was different this winter. His grandfather was dying a slow death of terminal cancer. This year John would hunt alone. Gary Paulsen's realistic fiction novel, Tracker, is never going to win a Newberry Award. It lacks the plot and motivation to be a good book, although I wouldn't completely scorn it, it has its fascinating parts. Here are some of the more interesting parts of the book: In this book a boy turns against the kill, and with longing compassion chases a young doe to the bitter end. Without the purpose to kill the doe the boy is left with no reason but immense curiosity and a stranded hope to touch the doe. In this novel, a boy with a dream will come through to himself, the inevitable truth will not be evaded, and death shall be cheated once again. I do not recommend this book unless you like a boring content with no flavor-J reviews
Tracker.......2007-01-16
Tracker
The book Tracker is about a boy named John. He wants to go hunting with his dad and his brother. When they went hunting they saw a deer. John shot at the deer he missed the deer by A inch. Than the deer ran away from John. I think people that like to hunt would enjoy reading this book.
The change in the book is that John didn't want to hunt any more. . This is the theme because John was frustrated that he kept missing the deer. Without this theme the idea for the book wouldn't be as good.
The characters are John, Mom, dad, and the brother. John is the main character. John was frustrated he shot at the deer and missed. John's mom likes to cook food a lot. Johns dad likes to hunt. So does his uncle. John liked to hunt in the boonies.
The setting was out in the woods and in the boonies. The setting made it a good book because it is a place John likes to hunt.
If there were not a setting than you wouldn't know where it took place. The theme helps readers understand, and the character is believable. You should read this book because they tell you not to frustrate when you shoot an animal and stay focus.
Back Home.......2006-12-05
I felt I was back home, in my childhood days. I grew up in the country where people hunted and ate deer meat. This book was tender and sentimental for me.
I was sad because the grandfather was dying.
I love all of Gary Paulsen's books. Even though most of them are teen books (Murphy's Gold is adult), they are breathtaking, enjoyable books for me. He writes books about rural life.
This particular book was special. The grandfather was dying, but does the deer have to die?
Joe Anderson's review.......2006-10-19
I loved this book!!! If you like the outdoors and hunting and are looking for a quick read this is the book for you .The reason why I liked this book is because I love the outdoors and hunting.
This story is about John Born, his grandfather is dying of cancer and it is a family tradition to go hunting. There is absolutely no sport in hunting for the Born's; it is to put food on the table for the long winter. One day he is out fertilizing the fields and he sees a doe. This suddenly changes his feelings about hunting. The main phrase or you could say its theme is, "If I touch the deer, death will be cheated
If you read this book it would definitely help to be a boy considering it is about hunting.

Umm...Disney? Why isn't this a cartoon?.......2007-01-16
A far more entertaining sequel than Bambi "2"( even though that wasn't a real sequel at all ). This tells the story of Geno and Gurri, Bambi and Faline's son and daughter, and their friends Lana and Boso, another pair of fawns. Bambi's Children is a bit more story-heavy than the original Bambi, which focused more on nature. Unlike it's predecessor, Bambi's Children ends when Geno begins to grow his antlers.
Hopefully Disney will eventually make this wonderful book into an animated film.
An Old Childhood Favorite Revisted.......2004-05-05
When I was a young child, I, my parents and twin sister, would spend part of the summer in Five Islands, Maine. We stayed at a large house belonging to our father's great aunt, who would take in boarders every summer. One summer the house was so full, my sister and I ended up in the attic, with rows of books behind our beds. Among the books were Bambi, Bambi's Children, and Perri, and all three became favorites of mine. Many times while I was growing up, and grown up, I so wished I could get a copy of Bambi's Children, and was delighted to be able to order a used copy from amazon.com. It was so enjoyable reading about Bambi and Faline's two fawns, Geno and Gurri, and how different in personality they were. In the course of the novel, you meet their Aunt Rolla and her fawns, Lana and Boso, and the two orphans, Nello and Membo. And, in the end, the mother, Faline, knowing when the time was right, sends her and Bambi's children off to start lives of their own. Magic and wonderment on every page, and a joy to read, and read again.
Bambi Review.......2003-02-13
Bambi was about a young prince named Bambi,a deer, and his life avoiding man. Bambi is a delicious book. A true classic. Generation after generation will certainly love it like I did. You won't be able to put it down. I liked the book because, I enjoy hunting, so it was kinda cool to read about animals. The reason i gave it four stars was because I disliked the book a little. I disliked the book because it wasn't like the movie, and it made my fellow hunters look bad.
Favorite childhood read.......2002-05-24
I read this book over and over again when I was seven or eight. Wonderfully illustrated, I actually read this, the sequel, before reading the original "Bambi," and at the time, I was a bit shocked at the difference in tone between the two stories (the original was definitely dark, compared to the lightheartedness of the sequel). The story of Bambi's Children, twin fawns Geno and Gurrie, is a must-read for any young lover of nature stories.
A slightly disappointing sequel.......1999-03-04
The story of how Geno and Guri learn the harshness as well as pleasures of life in the woods doesn't seem to ring as true as the earlier story of their father's growth and learning.Man is less menacing and an effort is made to distinguish harmful from helpful men.The characters are slightly less realisic. When Salten wrote this book(while the movie was in progress of being made)he might've just wanted to cash in and put less effort into the story.

Book Description
Few things transform a boat into a yacht quite as gracefully as the incomparable look and texture of oiled, varnished, and bare wood surfaces. Whether the spars and cabin trunk of a wooden Alden schooner, the mirror-smooth foredeck of a Huckins motoryacht, the thwarts and oars of a Whitehall dinghy, or the teak decks and trim of a production fiberglass boat, brightwork is the crowning touch that elevates one boat in an anchorage above the rest.
But it is also its owner's care and responsibility. There's no mystery to brightwork, but it's a finicky and time-consuming process, one that rewards orderliness and forethought and is unforgiving of missteps. Drawing on more than 10 years' experience as a brightwork specialist, Rebecca Wittman provides in this book all the information you need to avoid frustrations and costly mistakes and derive the greatest possible satisfaction from a process that can be its own reward.
She answers such questions as:
- What are the symptoms of a deteriorating finish, and what clues does each provide to its source and cure?
- When can chipped, flaking, cracked, or blackened varnish be patched, and when must it be removed to bare wood for an entirely new finish?
- Which woods can be left bare?
- In preparing wood for a finish it is really necessary to sand through all the grits from coarse to fine? (It isn't.)
- When, if ever, is it advisable to use an oil finish on exterior surfaces?
Ms. Wittman has strong opinions. She favors foam brushes over expensive, badger-hair brushes, which achieve no better results and must be cleaned after each use with toxic solvents. She uses chemical strippers only on detailed or convoluted surfaces that a heat gun can't master. And she has clear preferences for certain varnishes and oils over others.
Her writing is meticulously thorough, yet graceful and entertaining. Brightwork is both a reference guide and a celebration of the art.
The techniques she describes will produce the highest-quality finishes on furniture in the home, as well.
"A first class and highly readable text that should be mandatory reading for anyone who owns or is contemplating owning a wooden vessel."--Sailing
"It's elegant--elegant as the work it describes so successfully, elegant in its writing, elegant in its photography, and elegant physically as a volume."--SAIL
A Cruising World "Editor's Choice":
"Brightwork provides all the information you need to avoid frustrations and costly mistakes and derive the greatest satisfaction from a process that can be its own reward."
Customer Reviews:
This is an art book and a how-to.......2006-09-20
I'm on the final phase of building a strip-planked pulling boat with plenty of varnished mahogany, walnut and cedar. I wish I'd had this book before starting the brightwork. The advice is clearly rendered (with or without the step-by-step pictures, although they would have been a nice addition) and in fact the writing style and beautiful pictures make this book worth having, even if you don't own a wooden boat. Very nice.
Proof is in the Pudding.......2005-01-24
I've never done varnishing or wood finishing before but this book gave me enough info to refinish the cabin sole on a 42' baltic. The result was beautiful - Rebecca saved my sole!
I found the detailed description of which paints, brushes, and tapes to use especially helpful. An excellent how-to book. Photos are lovely - it would be a nice coffee table book even if you don't own a wooden boat.
No Intermediate Results Pictured in a How To book???.......2004-11-09
I am a novice to brightwork and I most certainly enjoyed Wittman's photoessay of wonderful finished wood and beautiful wooden boats.
What puzzles me is why the author shows no images of the processes she describes. All photos are of finished results. As a novice, I'd like to see what bleached wood looks like and how stain brings the wood back to life, etc.
The companion book has exactly the same problem, by the way.
Exactly what I was looking for!.......2004-08-26
Refinishing my brightwork started out as a nuisance, but as I tried to reproduce the beautiful varnish surfaces the boat had when I bought her, I found that I was woefully unprepared. I asked "professionals," read magazines and searched through books at the chandlerys, and found nothing that answered the questions I had. After all, renewing my brightwork was no longer a chore, it was now more like the search for the holy grail. Rebecca's book is exacly what I was looking for. The definitive book on brightwork. Kudos Rebecca for a job well done. Worth every penny at twice the price.
Only for beginners, I guess........2004-08-13
I told myself that I wouldn't do it. I promised myself, but I did it anyway. I read most (was getting too judgemental to finish) of her book only to come away dissappointed. I have been in the business for twenty years in San Diego, where we can varnish outside more than 10 days a year. Yes, I read her intended scope and reader experience criteria, but that still should not excuse her from some seriously flawed advice.
First, how much did interlux pay you to become their spoke person? Schooner varnish with a foam brush? I can see it now. If your intentions were to educate the novis, recommending a foam brush is a bad idea, for starters. I have used foam for too many years along with my "environmentally unfriendly" Badgers. Small foamers have there place, but your description of foams superiority to Badgers, is down right comedy.
If I had known that only ten years experience, varnishing mainly indoors(remember,Seattle) with foam brushes dipped in a third rate finish would make me an expert.....
I know this sounds harsh, but a beginner to varnishing should know what other professionals in the trade think about her advice. Refishers will always dissagree about various techniques, and best product to use. This book gave minimal print though, to what is recognized WORLD WIDE as the "the best". ( ox hair, badger brushes, Epifanes High Gloss ).
Proof is in the pudding. I would gladly invite you to come down here to San Diego, and demonstrate your expertise on a 16' wide caprail, 85 degrees, Santa Ana winds in full form, with 15% rel. hum. Yes, these conditions are extreme, but a variation of one or more of these, happen quite often almost everywhere. And, oh yeah, we can't go indoors.
In my opinion, the techniques, varnish, and brushes recommended in this book, fail to pass the most important test of all: what if I don't live in Seattle.
