Excellent Guide - Worth buying.......2007-08-08
I have found this title to be very interesting, and very informative at the same time. It provides a great deal of background information and historical facts for each of the trails it details. The book also provides some historical and other information on the state of Utah, including info on the types of wildlife and plantlife that can be found in the different climate of Utah.
It includes many trails, all over the state. As the title suggests, mosts of the trails are ones that give you an alternate route, or backcountry route, to or through a city/town. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that I would like to see some more maps of the smaller, shorter off road trails in Utah.
Overall, this is an excellent resource to have, and I have found it very enjoyable. There are great trails and wonderful details in the book. I would say it is worth the buy.
Great resource for finding that perfect road.......2007-05-13
We have used this throughout central and southwest Utah. It's great for finding that little known unimproved road you've heard about, or planning your trip, and most importantly for knowing just what you are getting into when you go through that cattle gate that leads away from the beaten bath. The trail ratings are accurate, the instructions clear, it lets you know whether there is a way back out, or if you need to be looking for a turnaround, and unlike the dude at the gas station, doesn't forget that you might need 18 inch clearance or a winch on this one. I recommend it highly, it can make the difference between an exciting adventure and a frightening ordeal
New to offroading, get this book.......2003-08-24
This book is outstanding. It has been well used. It gives very detailed information for trails in Arizona. Almost impossible to get lost. It includes GPS waypoints for all trails. Definitely recommend!
Book Description
Are you among the millions of people whose only opportunity to observe wildlife comes after it has been run over and pressed into a patty by big rigs, then desiccated by the elements until even flies don't recognize it? This is the field guide for you! FLATTENED FAUNA fills an important gap in our natural history knowledge and fosters a heightened respect for the ecology of the paved environment.

not worth it.......2007-01-12
I purchased this book for my son, who drives alot as a pizza delivery guy. I don't recall the price, but it is a very thin book, and not worth whatever I paid. it is funny though, and an unusual subject....
Wonderful book........2005-10-13
This is a wonderful book for many reasons. The slam on the snob journals, where they list the camera used (the author studiously lists the photocopier that best took the image) is one of my favorites. True, death isn't funny (or pretty), but hey, it is a jungle out there. If you are kind of a weenie, and can't bear to think of Bambi and Thumper buying it on the freeway, this is not the book for you. But with a title like "Flattened Fauna", why on earth would you consider buying it?
This book is a gem in terms of dark humor. If that's your thing, you will enjoy it very much. If you think the world is full of sweet, adorable little animals bucking up on hind legs, talking in helium-altered baby voices, find a more suitable book, possibly in the children's section.
Handy-Dandy Guide.......2005-09-30
Life in suburbia is grand. When my daughter was 4, my wife ran over a squirrel and started crying over is as my daughter said, "He must have been in an awful hurry to see his family." Although I'm fortunate enough to live close enough to protected open space for our street to play host to a family or two of deer, road kill is about the closest I come to seeing anything beyond a momentary "Something wild ran by," so this comes in handy. There's a lot of raodkill in various shapes, and after three days, about the only way you're going to be able to figure out what it once was is this guide.
A Realistic Wildlife Viewing Guide.......2005-02-13
"This is a book about animals that, like the Wicked Witch of the East in The Wizard of Oz, are not just merely dead but really most sincerely dead. These are animals in which even flies have lost interest." So begins the introduction to one of the most unusual wildlife guides ever written.
The many Rorschach-like, black ink illustrations provide key clues to identifying creatures that, unlike the fabled chicken, failed to make it to the other side of the road. "The toad's tendency to flatten itself against the ground when threatened or afraid produces a uniform road pattern. The illustration is drawn from an actual specimen (male). Females are somewhat larger." "This illustration was drawn from and dead road runner, and is included to show something of the serenity achieved by a few road animals. The frantic pace of constant food-seeking has slowed considerable here. Regardless of traffic speed, the bird is clearly at rest."
Flattened Fauna is not a politically incorrect nor frivolous book. This is a legitimate guidebook based upon years of research by the author, who teaches biology at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. It has statistics: "Various historical estimates place the density of flattened animals at from 0.429 to 4.10 animals per mile of prime highway habitat." History: "A reliable 1897 report from North Dakota gives evidence of at least one large snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) flattened under the steel-rimmed wheels of several loaded wagons." And, of course, environmental: "Road carrion is among the major reasons why flesh-eating animals become part of the flattened fauna. Ground squirrels nibble on bats, opossums on ground squirrels, and skunks on opossums, providing a fine two-dimensional example of the balance of nature."
The various chapters identify numerous species and habits of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. Unlike other guidebooks that focus on habitats where animals live, Roger Knutson takes a different perspective: the habitat where they died. He's not the first to do so, but his humor raises this study out of the dusty bins of academia to make this little book (5 x 8 inches and 80 pages) one that you'll read from cover to cover.
Evolution???.......2003-03-12
Indeed, a culture so in love with huge smoking pieces of metal thinks it's "evolved" to the point of no return -- producing this book. Dispeakable in every aspect.

Beautiful map, but scale too small.......2007-10-14
The map is beautiful and (reasonably) accurate, but its small scale limits its use for hiking. Many of the contours are so closely spaced, faint, or interrupted by text that they are nearly useless. The publishers tried to squeeze the entire national monument onto one map sheet, which makes for a good overview and planning map, but a poor hiking map.
Unfortunately, you have rather limited options, at least when it comes to paper maps: The USGS 7.5 minute topo sheets are great, but they don't show the trails, local hiking maps are hit and miss (some can be great). State-wide mapping software that lets you print customized hiking maps might be the way to go, but I haven't tried them yet.
Essential map for hiking Isle Royale.......2004-09-04
This map is part of the Trails Illustrated series covering many national parks. These are all sturdy and convenient.
Your map choices are essentially this one, the National Park Service map, and USGS topos. The NPS map is fine if you're staying at Rock Harbor Lodge and doing light day activities from that base.
If you're backpacking, or doing long day hikes, the Trails Illustrated map is absolutely essential because the USGS topographic maps are outdated. For example, the topo shows a no-longer-existent East Feldtmann trail on the southwest part of the island.
The topo also shows inaccurately the trail that goes over White Oak Ridge in the same area. The Trails Illustrated map shows the trails correctly.
This map also shows (1) group and individual campsites and (2) distances between trail junctions that accord with the NPS signage. Both features make it useful for planning your trip.

Book Description
A lifelong fascination with primates led Dale Peterson to Africa, which he crisscrossed in hope of sighting chimpanzees in the wild. As with any adventure worth retelling, however, Peterson's detours are as notable as his destinations. With the good-natured fatalism of the tested traveler, Peterson tells of trains and riverboats, opportunists and ecotourists, rain forests and shantytowns as he conveys the pitfalls of going forth on a budget as tiny as the continent is vast. Along the way, we also meet Jane Goodall and several other renowned primate researchers and caretakers. This is travel writing with a purpose, an account that inspires both admiration and concern for Africa's people, places, and natural diversity.

In the wise words of Dame Juliana Berners, spoken five centuries ago yet just as immediate now, "there is more to fishing than catching fish." So begins The Complete Book of Fly Fishing, a combination primer-encyclopedia that is indeed a fairly complete book--and without sacrificing depth for breadth. Early chapters include the basics, such as history, equipment, and technique. McNally explains the differences between dry flies, nymphs, and wet flies, and how to approach these very different forms of fly-fishing. Insect hatches, stream tactics, and more advanced strategies are also detailed with illustrations and color photographs. Final chapters cover less traditional quarry like bass, pike, and saltwater species.
Book Description
There's an old saying among fly fishers that equipment isn't the only thing, it's everything. But the best equipment in the world will catch few fish if you don't know how to use it. Experienced anglers with dimestore equipment can outfish the superbly equipped tyro every time--because they know how it's done.
With nearly fifty years of fly fishing to look back on, Tom McNally knows how it's done, from angling for tiny brook trout in mountain streams to fly casting for giant marlin in the open ocean--and everything in between. This book is the culmination of a long and respected career as one of the world's best-known outdoor writers--the collected knowledge of almost half a century of fly fishing condensed to fit between two covers. Here, in plain language, is a complete book of fly fishing from a complete fly fisherman.

Complete is right!.......2001-09-05
just a quick word about this wonderful book: within two months of reading it, and having never fly-fished a day in my life, i took 23 creel-size trout in two days from Helton Creek, North Carolina. this book guided me throug the purchase of all my equipment, and instructed me on all the techniques in using it. in the nine months since i first read this book i have caught all three species of trout, countless pan fish, crappies, small- and large-mouth bass, and one baracudda. i highly recomend it to anyone interested in fly-fishing.
Great Book!.......2001-03-26
I'm reading this book right now and I love it! I used to read his articles years ago in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Sports Afield and I'd forgotten what a fine writer he was. I like the way he tells good stories while he's taking fishing and even though I can't yet get to some of the places he's writing about, he sure makes me want to be there. This is the sort of book that a book lover will enjoy and a book lover who is also a fly fisher will especially enjoy every bit of it! My husband, Tom, who is a writer himself, also has read it and is every bit as keen on it as I.
Disappointed Southern Fisherman.......2000-10-15
This book is listed as 368 pages. Thankfully there were only 349. I thought I was reading a novel. Each chapter began with a verbose, and usually self backpatting, 4-5 page introduction of the authors personal conquest while fly fishing. It took me so long to read, that I was out of time to return it. I sincerely believe the "meat" of this book could have been communicated in less than 200 pages, and probably less than 100 if color photos(other than the 10 pages in the center of the book that were of no benefit) were used. Actually, few photos of the "how to" were shown, the sketches carried most of the weight. Most of the black-and-white photos were of an already caught fish that bolstered the authors standing with his audience. L.L.Beans books are done and offer more info. Let's cut to the chase so that we can get back on the water. I would not recommend to beginner of advanced fishermen. I think that any book that includes fly tying or pictures of fishing flies commands color photos. How many fishing lures have you ever bought from a black-and-white catalog?
Many better books available.......2000-06-19
I am very disapointed with this book. McNally wastes a lot of time pumping himself up by telling us about how he won some distance casting contests back in his prime, how fly line used to be labeled when he first got into fly fishing, and other useless info. His section on fly casting is pitiful and provides no real information to a beginner. The funniest part is his fly casting problems and remedies - I've seen better information on an index card. His section on fly tying is also useless.
The final offense is that in several pictures of trout, McNally describes how the trout was handled gently and released carefully. Then in the saltwater fishing section, he catches a small dolphin and shows a picture of himself gaffing the dolphin with a caption that reads "Dolphins are good eating!".
McNally might be a great fly fisher but his book as awful. I would recommend the LLBean book over this one for beginners anyday.

Book Description
Here at last is a book for fly tiers, beginners and experts alike, that provides foolproof directions for tying all types of flies. In this book even the beginner knows where he is during every step in the process, from the moment he ties in the waxed thread until he ties off the fly with the whip finish knot.
But unlike the specialized books on fly tying that describe particular types or styles of flies, this book covers them all -- all types of both freshwater and saltwater flies. Whether you are talking about dry flies for trout, streamers for tarpon, or hair bugs for bass, you will find them here. Eric Leiser teaches the basic methods for tying all basic flies. Standard dries? Yes. Hair dries? Yes. Parachute dries? Yes. Hackleless flies? Again yes. Wets, nymphs, streamers, Jassids and other terrestrials, bucktails and Muddlers, Spuddlers and Matukas? Yes, everything! This book provides all the basics for the different types and styles of flies, and patterns are given for the most important flies in each category.
The drawings are the work of another master fly tier, Dave Whitlock, who knows the processes himself and supplements Leiser's detailed instructions with step-by-step illustrations. In addition, there are clear and useful photographs by Gus Nevros.
In sum, this is truly The Complete Book of Fly Tying. It will clarify the mysteries for the beginner; it will reveal tricks of the trade for the expert who seeks to improve his method or who wants to tie types of flies he has not attempted before. It also covers, of course, the necessary tools and is filled throughout with immensely helpful discussion of materials, and their special uses and characteristic behavior during the process of tying. And there is specific advice on how to master difficult or obstinate materials such as deer hair, which often baffles beginning tiers of the hair-bodied fly. Throughout, Eric Leiser not only describes each step in detail, but shows how to avoid some all-too-common mistakes.
This book is a complete education -- and one that will leave you well prepared to tie any kind of fly for any fish taken on the fly rod.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book but pictures need to be updated.......2000-05-12
I found this book very helpful. I am new to fly tying and had to learn the basics. The author dose a great job of doing that. There is also a very good selection of flies. You can tie almost any major pattern for trout, fresh water or salt water fishing. Lots and lots of little tying secrets that are great for the beginner. "You can't judge a book by it's cover". The only major problem with this book is it's illustrations. Don't judge them by the excellent graphics on the cover. It is the last one you will see. All pictures are black and white and must have been taken when the book was originally published. They are not even good black and white illustrations. With new color detailed pictures, this book would be unbeatable. In spite of the poor illustrations, this book is definitely worth buying. I hope the author reads this and updates them.
Excellent Instructional Book.......2000-02-20
Have recently moved from the Texas coast to western Pennsylvania, this book was particularly helpful learning how to tie a variety of trout flies. This book is extremely helpful learning a variety of techniques and patterns. If you are a beginner this is the book for you as it will instruct you in the various techniques and tricks necessary to become an accomplished tier. Book is set up well with respect to the fact that it teaches you how to tie one fly and then gives the recipe how to tie any others. Good Stuff.
The Art of Fly Tying.......2000-02-07
This book is an excellent tool for a beginning fly tyer. All the techniques for a variety of flies is walked through step by step. From small trout dry flies to salt water flies and tandem hook streamers, the procedure for each fly is demonstrated. These techniques can then be used for a number of flies listed at the end of each section. The only drawback to the book that I found, is that you need a lot of material to tie the flies. I found myself going back and forth from the fly supplier in my area to get the materials needed to finish a fly. This is probably unavoidable if one is going to tie flies, though. Overall, an excellent book.
Fantastic for the beginner and the expert!.......1999-02-17
I had just started tying and this was the first book I bought. Leiser takes through the steps of tying very clearly and in a relaxing manner. From the beginning you get the feeling of a patient yet light hearted instructor. The book covers a variety of methods and patterns. Everyone that has seen my copy has said only one thing, "I need to get this one, it's great!" Include this in your tying book library.
Excellent pattern book.......1998-06-30
This book is a bible on fly patterns and has some tips on how to tie them better
Customer Reviews:
pages missing, some copies.......2003-07-31
Beware that some printed copies of this title are missing pages. Third-party seller "ghbooks" shipped me a copy with pages 17-32 missing. I've e-mailed both the publisher and "ghbooks" to try to get some explanation. Neither responded. I'd suggest buying a new copy direct from Amato publishers. The book itself looks very good, but 16 pages of "mayflies" missing is a very serious omission.
A must for anyone serious about flyfishing!.......1999-11-29
I just bought this book, and read it straight through. I have also taken it with me--to the river--to use as it was written. The book is well written, and contains most of the general information that flyfishermen need to really enhance their experience. The only thing I would recommend in any subsequent revisions, is the use of color photographs of the insects. Tight Lines!
An excellent resource for the flyfisher.......1998-12-24
This softcover book not only matches fly patterns to the hatch but also educates the reader to the lifecycles, anatomy, and seasonal hatches of the insects. The illustrations are excellent and even are appealing to those with a biology background. This book single handedly enlightened me (at an age of thirteen) to the art and science of fly fishing. Hence a much greater and in depth appreciation for the craft. The book has sat on my shelf now for many years as a competent reference. I have personally had the opportunity to work with Rick Hafele (author) for a day on a small stream in souther Oregon. I was even more impressed with his keen knowledge and passion for entomology and the art of fly fishing. I highly recommend this book to any one just starting or even better as a a gift to an inquisitive child who will learn much much more than just how to match the hatch. This book will please all audiences though.

Dream away in you're lazy chair.......2000-11-08
Many fishermen never see another stream then the one in their backyard. And those who are so fortunate to find there, an excellent river to fish in, have very little reason to look further. But what beautiful places you can find, all over the world. Maybe to expensive to go there for real, but with this book you can dream away to all corners of the world. You will never be tired of this book, so keep it at hand. And if you can afford it, the information given will lead you to the best places where big fish are waiting. Great pictures, great information about the quarry and appetizing discriptions of the places you never dreamed of, but certainly are wanting to go to, after reading this book.
