Arizona Backcountry adventures.......2007-03-31
Great book but not entirely up-to-date. The author needs to run each of these routes at least once a year to keep it up to date.
Great!!!!!.......2007-01-10
I found that this book was great for our off road adventures in our new Jeep. The area we visited was Sedona and Jerome, AZ, area. What we liked about this book is the odometer readings were very exact, that the book had you zero out your odometer frequently and reset the odometer. The descriptions of the off road trails were very accurate. The rating systems for difficulty factor and scenic factor are very realistic. Also the milege of the trip and the time it takes to finish the route are included in each trip. You can also use GPS coordinates.
Great Trail Guide.......2007-01-09
Many of the best trails in AZ are listed in this book. The GPS and Map references help get to the trails and out the other end. The history of the trails and info on the animals, mines and formations make driving these trails even more fun to ride.
Great Book.......2007-01-05
I have had the So Cal book for a few years and love it, so I expected this book to be just like that but of a different region/state. The AZ book doesn't have the same amount of information. The trails are just as detailed with GPS points but I wanted to say that I feel that the author didn't put as much time into this one and thats why not rated a 5. Its still a great book and in my opinion still the best choice out there for anyone who likes the road less traveled and own any type of SUV. There is great information about all the trail's history, color pictures and the rating system is something that you could trust before you hit the trails.
a really good 4wd guide book.......2006-08-23
I found this very informative showing good facts and details, examples would be gps coordinates and road information (like you'll pass mine shaft on rt then road forks). One will find that the book also has a detailed road description in reverse, in case you are on a road traveling from the other end. You will also love the maps, lots of them, on every page. Then on each page the author talks about what hazards to look for and what sights to see, goes into good overall detail, very well done. The book goes over facts of 4 wheeling for the novice and the pro so that all can enjoy the outdoors and be safe at the same time. When traveling these roads you'll have the guide next to you with page marked for constant referance. Take your camera and a tripod to record your trip.
Product Description
Learn about and identify birds using Stan Tekiela's state-by-state field guides. The full-page, color photos are incomparable and include insets of winter plumage, color morphs and more. Plus, with the easy-to-use format, you don't need to know a bird's name or classification in order to easily find it in the book. Using this field guide is a real pleasure. It's a great way for anyone to learn about the birds in your state.
Customer Reviews:
A great bird field guide.......2007-01-04
I was not familiar with the birds of Arizona. We hired a jeep tour and went through the area using the guide as our only source. The book identified the birds quickly and easily.
Good, But Incomplete.......2006-08-05
Provides a good description of the birds it covers, but does not include many birds that are part-time visitors from Mexico.
For example, in southeastern Arizona, we have 13 species of hummingbirds visit every year. The book lists four.
The Hooded Oriole is common in southeastern Arizona, but is not found in the book.
Novice: Easy to Use.......2006-05-21
The author's tips train you to look for traits that are helpful in identifying the bird quickly and easily in the guide. He describes behaviors that are often as helpful as the good photos in identifying what you have seen, even after it's flown away. Highly recommend this book for use in AZ.
Customer Reviews:
Be Wary!.......2006-02-09
This guidebook will look great on your coffeetable, but using it in the field will probably get you into trouble! There are a few flaws that the book posseses that I would like to point out. The book is way to too produced and fluffy with pretty pictures to be conveniently carried on the trail. Because of the way that the book is set up it cannot be easily changed and updated on a yearly basis and might I add that in 2005 (when the book was published) it was already out of date. The Arizona trail is not yet complete, well designed, or well routed, and therefore will change on a yearly basis. New trail has recently been built around the I-10 area; there is no tread around the Gila River, or north of Flagstaff; the Mazatzals have been severely burned which makes hiking and camping a major challenge, and the book fails to mention this.
The water information in the book leaves much to be desired. It may mark a water source on the map but if you don't read carefully in the text you might miss the note that it is highly unreliable (by the way, a "highly unreliable" in the book means that there is no chance in hell you will find water). If you rely solely on this book to guide you along the AZT you will end up in trouble. This book is a good reference to use, but you must do a lot of research before venturing out. I highly recommend Dave Hick's website and all of its links, as well as the Arizona Trail Association's website.
Destined to be an Outdoor Classic.......2005-11-20
Long distance hiking trails are truly beginning to proliferate about the country. Besides the well known Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails, the Bay Area Trail, Tahoe Rim Trail, Florida Trail and many others are in the works. Guide books are already available for most of these, but of all that I have seen this book by Tom Jones is simply the best. It has the best photography, maps, and concise trail descriptions of any of the guides out there including the 3 volume PCT handbooks from Wilderness Press. That's saying a lot.
This book divides the 772 mile Arizona Trail into 43 manageable sections. Strong dayhikers will probably be able to do every one of them with a car shuttle. Those of us inclined to a more leisurely pace, or those planning to "thru hike" the trail will find excellent descriptions of potential camping spots and water locations. Each section begins with an overview noting mileage (and the more subjective "quality miles"), distance to and from the Utah and Mexico borders, which portions of the trails are open to mountain bikers and other use restrictions, and the government agency responsible for that section of trail. A well written trail description, complete with GPS measurements for important locations follows. Every chapter also includes sharp color photos and detailed topographical maps.
I enjoy Arizona and have hiked extensively in the Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff and Grand Canyon areas. Jones's book has whetted my appetite to explore more of this wonderful and diverse state on this trail. It is a great planning guide and heartily recommended. My lone caveat is that parts of the trail are still being constructed, and others will soon be rerouted. Readers should expect a new edition every couple years. Hopefully they will all be as good as the initial one.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but..........2003-04-28
The text for the descriptions of the hikes is fantastic. The directions are generally good, although the directions to a lot of the Sabino Canyon hikes is a little lacking.
What really irritates me about this book is the trail profiles. For example, the Agua Caliente trail profile begins at an elevation of 5420'. It ends at 5420'. It goes up in the middle, but it is nearly impossible to tell how far -- there are no other elevation marks besides the first and last. This pattern is repeated on a number of different profiles, and is the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 stars.
Those familiar with reading topo maps may be able to decipher altitudes, but for the rest of us the profiles are useless on many hikes.
Journies past superb scenic mountain vistas.......2002-12-10
Now in a thoroughly updated second edition, Tucson Hiking Guide by experienced Tucson hiker Betty Leavengood offers thirty-four hikes grouped by mountain range, and ranked from easy to difficult. Most of these journies past superb scenic mountain vistas are only a short drive from downtown Tucson. Maps, photos, elevation/distance profiles, trail access information, historical notes, personal anecdotes, and much, much more fill this solid and thorough guide from cover to cover enabling anyone to see and experience the natural splendor of the Tucson area on foot.
A guide good enough to read as BOOK!.......2000-07-09
Each trail has a profile, topo map, and other trail data including distance and difficulty. Descriptions are complete and very well done. There is a good balance of trails surrounding Tucson. Honestly though... research is outstanding! Trail history digs deep to find out how the trail names came about. Information on the Pontatoc Trail name set my mind at ease having grown up in Oklahoma. Several trails sparked my interest having seen little information previously in print. Highly recommended for all and a must have for Tucson residents - joe bartels Webmaster - HikeArizona.COM
The definitive guide for hiking the Tucson area.......1999-03-08
This is not your ordinary hiking guide, this guide not only gives explicit directions to trail heads and details of what to look for on the trails; Betty's thorough research gives fascinating insights into local history as well. Hiking these trails it is not uncommon to see hikers carrying this book, for it is recognized as the definitive hiking guide for this area.
the authoritative book on hiking in Tucson.......1998-05-03
I lived several years in Tucson and was an avid hiker. As such I am very familiar with the trails and mountains of which Betty Leavengood writes. Betty provides all of the necessary hiking information (distances, elevation, topo maps), but what sets this book apart from others are the historical anecdotes which are part of each trail description. Betty's keen knowledge of history brings the trails to life!

Book Description
When you think of Arizona, you think desert. But Arizona is also home to mountains that top 12 ,000 feet and broad plateaus that are shaded by ponderosa pines, spruce, and fir. Sheer cliff faces soar skyward, mesas abound, and, yes, Arizona is dissected by gulches, abysses, and canyons, including the impressive Grand Canyon. It is in this grand variety of topographies that recreational activities and camping opportunities abound.
In 2000 and 2001, former President Bill Clinton established five new national monuments in Arizona: Grand Canyon-Parashant, Vermilion Cliffs, Agua Fria, Sonoran Desert, and Ironwood Forest. These new national monuments encompass some of the state's most biologically and culturally rich wildlands. There's something for everyone in the new edition of Exploring Arizona's Wild Areas.

Verde River Recreation Guide.......2002-05-13
Author Jim Slingluff has paddled every navigable mile of Arizona's Verde River, plus many of it's tributaries and his expertise really shows through in this book. Slingluff is a die-hard canoeist and this book is full of information specific to canoeists, though it's also a great guidebook for kayakers and rafters.
Slingluff breaks the river down into sections that can be canoed, beginning with the headwaters at Morgan Ranch near Prescott, all the way down to the confluence with Arizona's Salt River, near Phoenix. He also describes every rapid and potential hazard encountered on the river. This information may be dated since the book was last revised in 1996, but it's a great way to get an idea of what you're facing in a trip down the Verde.
I haven't yet made my own trip down the Verde, but when I go, the Verde River Recreation Guide is going with me.
Book Description
The latest volume in the unique Sierra Club Guides to the Natural Areas of the United States covers some of America's most spectacular national parks, among them the Grand Canyon, Carlsbad Caverns, the Petrified Forest, Pyramid Lake, and Toiyabe National Forest. But here, too, are dozens of lesser known public-domain lands, wildlife refuges, and other wilderness areas -- no less magnificent, but less crowded. Sites are listed alphabetically within fifteen geographic zones, each entry offering a wealth of detail, including:
-- Location: directions from the closest town or highway, and a key to adjacent wilderness areas
-- Physical descriptions: topography and geography, weather patterns, acreage, outstanding natural features, and points of special interest
-- Wildlife: birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians
-- Flora: major plant species and forest types
-- Recreation: opportunities for nature walks, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, skiing, backpacking, hunting, fishing, swimming, and scenic drives
-- Resources: park headquarters and ranger districts, visitor centers, publications, and maps
-- Easy reference: symbols tell at a glance the recreational opportunities at each site
One-third of New Mexico, nearly one-half of Arizona, and 70% of Nevada is public land, including three major desert systems, nine million acres of national forest, and over 200 mountain ranges. Based on extensive research and original on-site surveys, this excellent guide invites both travelers and residents to enjoy the fullest the matchless resources in these three states.

One for the pocket.......2004-02-19
Just why this attractive little book should have appeared on a library shelf in central New Jersey I don't know, but it's an unexpected treasure. Convenient in size and layout, beautifully illustrated by Narca Moore-Craig and with handsome color photos of birds at the nest, this booklet will definitely be added to my own traveling library as soon as I'm back in se AZ. The brief descriptions of nest site and character should make it possible to plausibly identify even unattended nests, and the short, clearly written sketches of each of the 50-some covered species' life histories are full of precisely the information that birders (well, I, at least) so easily forget. Well done, and highly recommended.
Praise for Merlin's Guide.......2001-06-04
A must for everyone who enjoys bird watching and takes pleasure in studying and observing nature. Nicely organized and easy to use. The book teaches you how to look and catergorize bird nests, creating formulas which can then be applied anywhere you travel. The basic principles set a very good standard for all future guides. In addition, there are numerous and facinating entries about various species. For instance, the cow bird, never building his own nest and laying an egg a day in other species nests who then do all the work of incubating and feeding. While some birds make layered nests with a warbler observed being 6 layers deep. The comparative facts, for instance the Anna vs.Costa hummingbirds, were very interesting and helpful for field study. Excellent for both the novice and the more expert. The information, photographs and excellent drawings only make you want more.

Customer Reviews:
not really a book.......2006-10-23
This is more an article than a book. Although it gives some useful advice on how to tackle the task of playing competetive tennis, I do not think is worth buying it.
A book that is really useful for your tennis. No doubts........2003-02-04
I want to highly recommand this book,
to every normal player (like me) that want to improve his game.
Without any doubt.
The reason is that I am following the indications,
the explanations, and the system that Tom Veneziano explain so well in his book.
And right now I am a brand-new tennis player.
I am more relaxed and happy on court.
Now, I really use my mind on court.
My muscles are much more relaxed on court.
I look at my tennis, and at the game of the ATP players,
in a different way. I understand a lot more, than in the past.
You could imagine how, those differences, have had a wonderful effect on my tennis.
The main reason is that, Tom Veneziano,
give to the reader, a system, something you could begin to understand and put in practice the next time on court.
On this book, there is no word about tennis stroke's tecnique.
It's all about the mental game, and the mental side of tennis.
He dont teach you, how to use your arms and legs, he teach you how to use your mind.
Something much more delicate, to use on court.
We all know how tennis is difficult, and full of worries,
after this book, tennis will became less difficult,
and a lot of worries will desappear.
In my opinion it's very important to read it a lot of time.
Because it's full of indications, rights for us,
very normal, but eagers to improve, tennis players.
"The Truth about Winning".......2002-06-02
"The Truth about Winning" will help you win a lot more matches because thinking clearly matters so much during competition. Whether you're a club player or a world-class pro,
you'll play better if you use Tom Veneziano's refocus and relaxation techniques. They will help you learn to handle
adversity better. I especially like his advice: "Do not emote.
Evaluate." Mental toughness is so important in the individual sport of tennis. This book helps you use your head so you can play up to your potential more often. I recommend it!
Teaching pro from New England
Tom Veneziano will teach you how to play your best tennis.......2002-04-17
Bo Jackson knew football and baseball. Tom Veneziano knows tennis. If you want to take your tennis game to the next level ... read this book!

Book Description
Many leaders remember those life-changing moments when it suddenly became crystal clear what had to be done to reach their organizations' goals. It wasn’t until Pete Luongo was faced with that one epiphany in his life, a difficult period that required him to rebalance life’s priorities and bring a new understanding to his work, that he recognized that all results are based upon behaviors appropriate to the circumstances. Through this understanding — that actions are determined by specific, well-defined standards — he developed a model for success, one that is both sustainable and that allows people to retain their personal dignity as they pursue their life plans. In this book, Luongo illuminates the ten most common obstacles to success and pairs them with the ageless principles that help readers overcome them. His straightforward advice, based on data and hard-won experience, provides an understandable and virtually guaranteed plan for improvement and achievement.

Land Grab: The Truth About "The Winning of the West".......2002-11-24
I can't believe this book is out of print. It is absolutely essential reading for anyone who wants to know about the REAL history of the West. To say that Terrell does not mince words is to put it lightly. The stories he tells are appalling. Plus, he writes well; the book is eminently readable. If a 6-star review were possible, that's what I would give this book.
