Book Description

Despite the dedicated efforts of many individuals and organizations, the great apes--our closest living relatives--are on the very edge of extinction. This sweeping atlas provides a comprehensive overview of what is currently known about all six species of great apes--chimpanzee, bonobo, Sumatran orangutan, Bornean orangutan, eastern gorilla, and western lowland gorilla. Created in association with The Great Apes Survival Project (GRASP), this book gives a thorough background on ape behavior and ecology for each species, including detailed habitat requirements, the apes' ecological role, and the possible consequences of their decline. World Atlas of Great Apes also offers a full description of the threats, current conservation efforts, and additional protection needed for each species across its entire range. Many full-color maps and illustrations make the abundance of information accessible to a broad readership, from specialists and policymakers to general readers concerned about the survival of these charismatic primates.
This book represents the work of a dynamic alliance of many of the world's leading great ape research and conservation organizations. Bringing together United Nations agencies, governments, foundations, and private-sector interests, the project aims to raise the international profile of great ape conservation and to build the political will for further action. Readers learn about work being done by specific organizations in support of great ape conservation, and where conservation is most needed and most likely to be effective.

    Book Description

    The World Atlas of Biodiversity is an updated edition of Global Biodiversity: Status of the Earth's Living Resources, originally published in 1992 and reissued in 2000 as Global Biodiversity: Earth's living resources in the 21st Century. This 2002 edition, totally redesigned and updated, includes new data and graphics, additional photos, and additional material on food issues and biodiversity, as well as an entirely new chapter on protected areas and other conservation issues.
    World Atlas of Biodiversity addresses the remarkable growth in concern at all levels for living things and the environment, and increased appreciation of the links between the state of ecosystems and the state of humankind. Building on a wealth of research and analysis by the conservation community worldwide, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible view of key global issues in biodiversity. It outlines some of the broad ecological relationships between humans and the rest of the material world and summarizes information on the health of the planet. Opening with an outline of some fundamental aspects of material cycles and energy flow in the biosphere, the book goes on to discuss the expansion of this diversity through geological time and the pattern of its distribution over the surface of the Earth, and trends in the condition of the main ecosystem types and the species integral to them.

    4 out of 5 stars Great encyclopedia, but why page-spliting graphics?.......2007-04-26

    This is a great reference book that is richly illustrated with high-quality graphics. I'm not sure why the editors/authors decied to arrange many of these graphics so that they span the page split, a characteristic that obscures some detail and makes the examination of data-rich maps difficult.

    Overlooking this limitation, there is relatively little to complain about. I like the standard layout of the map-based information and it appears to be relatively complete. I recommend this book for educators and for those wishing to have a geographically-oriented overview of the biosphere.

      Book Description

      From the common deer mouse and the elusive Spotted Owl to the tailed frog and the painted turtle, the comprehensive "Atlas of Oregon Wildlife" has become the standard reference for all who study or have an interest in the state's wildlife. It combines current knowledge on the habitats and life histories of Oregon's wildlife species with a new generation of computer-generated species distribution maps.

      The Atlas devotes a full page to each amphibian, reptile, breeding bird, and mammal found in Oregon. Each species account features:

      -a drawing of and measurements for the species;

      -a map linked to a high-resolution land-cover map that shows where each species is likely to be found within Oregon;

      -the taxonomy, habitat, reproduction, food habits, and ecology of each species, as well as its global range and status;

      -selected references for additional information.

      For this second edition, new and improved distribution maps have been added for all 474 species. The coverage has been expanded to include all introduced vertebrates recognized as established in the state, all species of seals and sea lions found along its coast, and six extirpated species, including the California Condor, the grizzly bear, and the gray wolf, which may someday return to Oregon.

      This new edition of the Atlas will provide interested citizens with a basic understanding of Oregon's remarkable wildlife and serve as an invaluable reference for serious naturalists and wildlife professionals.

      4 out of 5 stars The difference between an atlas and a field guide.......2001-01-05

      With regard to the above comment, I'd just like to point out that this book is an atlas of Oregon wildlife, not an identification guide. If you've ever tried to scope out the range of a species from the tiny maps in most field guides, you'll appreciate the large size of these maps.

      3 out of 5 stars Big book with too little detail.......1999-08-03

      I was disappointed that a book this size had such limited descriptions of the animals. Nearly half of each page was devoted to a map which showed the areas where the animal might be found. The pictures of the animals are black and white sketchs with no color descriptions in the text. Can you imagine trying to identify birds without knowing what color they are? If the map had been scaled down there would be plenty of room to give more detailed descriptions of the creatures. The idea is very good, but the book is a disappointment.

          Book Description

          The rain forests of West Africa have been designated as one of the world's hotspots of biodiversity. This book focuses on the biodiversity and ecology of these forests. It analyses the factors that give rise to biodiversity and the structure of tropical plant communities. It includes an atlas with ecological profiles of 280 rare plant species and 56 large timber species, each with a one page entry including a colour photograph and distribution map.

          Customer Reviews:

          3 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2006-04-15

          A large part of this book is an atlas, one page per species: the atlas is in color, as is the Appendix, while the rest of the book is in B&W. Actually there are two atlasses, one of close to three hundred woody plant species (including some monocots) in West Africa and one of fifty timber species that are important in a smaller area (apparently to be called "Upper Guinea"). However, the three hundred species include some additional timber species, that for some reason did not make it into the second atlas.

          Per species there always is a description, a detailed distribution map (very clear, in lovely color), and often a line-drawing or color photograph (personally I would have liked more illustrations, if need be at the expense of the size of the distribution map). The Appendix presents maps in a fair degree of detail showing forest cover. The first hundred pages provide general information on West African forests.

          I use the illustrations for lessons on descriptive English. The pictures are absolutely superb. The attention to detail is truly stunning. Kenneth Lilly has a wonderful gift and I wish him a long and fruitful career.

          This book is absolutely essential if you want really excellent quality pictures of various kinds of animals. The camera doesn't tell all.

          This is a wonderful book, it was full of great illustrations and a lot of good information. My son who is 17 months old can never get enough of looking through this book at all the different animals. He is always asking, "What's that?" It is wonderful to have all the information on each animal right next to the pictures to answer his questions.

            Book Description

            Technology today touches nearly every part of our lives. Through even more impressive development of machines, the process continues. Computers put men out of work; pushing a single button is enough to start a nuclear war.
            Gradually, though, the world has begun to remember that it is man for whom the machines must work, and not the other way around. We recognize now that science, for all its achievements, has done little to help us understand ourselves or realize our potential.
            There is no sense in waiting for science to do it for us. Each of us must now take it upon himself to understand his true nature and strength. The Chinese classic "Saikontan" says that we stand like beggars at the gate, forgetting the infinite power given us by the universe. Instead of shrinking
            from this potential, we should be thankful for it. we should strive to manifest it and help others to do the same.
            The author regards his Four Basic Principles to Unify Mind and Body as having been given to him by the universe to spread the way of the universe. There have been many who have grasped unification of mind and body. Very few, however, could teach it. Fewer still could teach how to teach it. Those who
            learn the four basic principles as explained in this book have come to understand not only how to unify their own minds and bodies, but also how to teach it to others.
            The author, founder of the Ki Society International, presents the philosophical groundwork and specific disciplines by which the individual may attune himself or herself with the hi-life energy of the universe and thrive in health and harmony, without fatigue or depression.

            Here is the deep left field point of view.
            Qi, Ki or whatever its name is such an abstraction, and its experience so subjective to even attempt to say anything about it is futile at best.
            Tohei was a great instructor, but the branch of practice that "only studies that which fosters ki" is fallacious at best. EVERYTHING ought to develop and foster Ki, propery practiced.
            So... there.

            After years of Aikido training I reached the conclusion that Japanese cannot articulate their thoughts about KI simply because, in so doing, they would have to admit that all the KI "stuff" comes from China. Even in this book Tohei sensei talks about positive and negative energy because he eventually doesn't want to use the terms Yin and Yang. This having said, this book offers an interesting perspective about the body energy as it is envisioned by Japanese. Tohei sensei reportedly is a man with immense KI. He is the only Great Master who received the 10th dan from O Sensei M. Ueshiba.
            In conclusion, if you want a Japanese perspective on KI, buy it. If you are a beginner and want to get started on your inner energy cultivation, I strongly suggest you to buy "Opening the Energy Gates of your Body" By Kumar Frantzis. If you are experienced in this field ... well you already know what you want to do.

            5 out of 5 stars Good start for beginners in ki-aikido.......2003-08-16

            I found the book to be very helpful in understanding some of the principles and concepts in ki-aikido. As a beginning practitioner of this art form, I found this book to be an excellent guide as to the various techniques and also it has provided me a better understanding on some of the concept of ki-aikido in general. Definitely a must read for all beginning practitioners or would be practitioners!

                  Koichi Tohei explains his four principles to unify mind and body. This book tries to help you learn these four principles, apply them and then teach them. The book is rather small, though its goal is large. It is very easy to read and understand by us westerners.

                  Interesting book, it gives examples of different ki building exercises that one can perform as well as an interesting story at the end.

                  I started studying this form of Ki shortly before I found this book. Having the book clarified what I was doing in class. Better, it allows me to practice on my own and helps, as the title suggests, with the application of Ki principles to everyday life--since in everyday life aikido throws can't usually be used to deal with problems. For example, how to maintain energized relaxation in difficult situations, how to sleep better, etc. I recommend it highly.
