Here is the definitive collection of poetry from one of America's best-loved writers-now available in paperback. With the publication of this book, eight volumes of poetry were brought back into print, including the early nature-based lyrics of Plain Song, the explosive Outlyer & Ghazals, and the startling "correspondence" with a dead Russian poet in Letters to Yesenin. Also included is an introduction by Harrison, several previously uncollected poems, and "Geo-Bestiary," a 34-part paean to earthly passions. The Shape of the Journey confirms Jim Harrison's place among the most brilliant and essential poets writing today.

3 out of 5 stars Browsable, rather than readable........2004-02-17

Jim Harrison, The Shape of the Journey: New and Collected Poems (Copper Canyon, 1998)

Jim Harrison is a good poet. He's been below the radar for many, many years, writing poems about nature and drinking and general irascibility that few people have actually read. Which is a shame, because when he's really on his game, his work is comparable to that of the best nature poets working today (Hayden Carruth being the obvious parallel here). And more often than not, he is on his game in this book.

Its major flaw is not the quality of the work therein, but the quantity. Even Bukowski, the most readable poet on the planet in the twentieth century, knew that stopping at about three hundred fifty pages of work was a good idea. Harrison's doughty tome weighs in at over four hundred fifty, and his stuff is not nearly as readable as Bukowski's. Nor is it as short. Even Carruth, whose Collected Shorter Poems 1946-1991 (also released by Copper Canyon) is one of the few books that is the exception to this rule (over seven hundred pages, and every one a gem), took all the long poems and placed them in a separate, smaller volume. Harrison, on the other hand, mixes with glee. You get a ten-line ghazal on one page, then a thirty-page longpoem following. The effect is somewhat jarring at times.

It's worth reading, but be prepared to linger over it for months, perhaps years. There's too much going on here to just take it out of the library. ***

5 out of 5 stars LIKE WALKING THROUGH A BEAUTIFUL FOREST.......2000-11-09

Author Jim Harrison says, "this book is the portion of my life that means the most to me". His poems vividly reflect the truth of his words. He writes about himself, his journey through life in outrageous and brilliant language weaving images of nature and earthly passions. Pause, and wander through the forests of this collection. It is lovely, lyrical and passionately beautiful.

    5 out of 5 stars Cabin Poem.......1999-12-22

"I have decided to make up my mind about nothing, to assume the water mask, to finish my life disguised as a creek,.."-from Cabin Poem. I met Jim Harrison once in New York. He and Russell Chatham signed the books I had collected by Harrison. My first thought was how could this gruff large loud man with one glass eye write such moving literature and poetry? How could he write with such realism and romance and with such deep spirituality and beauty? How does he know these things? I realised in the same moment that others must have felt the same about Hemingway. We have genius among us.

5 out of 5 stars Jim Harrison has shaped my life as a writer.......1999-10-30

I first read Jim Harrison's poems almost thirty years ago in the Crawford County library in Grayling when I was at the beginning of a long teaching trail. Harrison saved my life that day and he has almost every day since. I return, almost daily, to his work which serves as a "shock tippet" against the "stuff" of the world. I don't think anyone comes close to his ability to chronicle the spirit of the natural world...the language he speaks comes from the most secret of places.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.... imagine hugging a bear........1999-08-14

Jim Harrison has stretched out his arms and hugged a bear, I know he has. His poem "My Friend the Bear" has been running through my head since I first read it 3 years ago. This is one of many poems describing the flora and fauna of michigan and driving home the delicate nature of our interaction with it. Picture Jim cheek to cheek with a bear... if you have read him and met him you will know it is possible.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a lifestyle change that works!.......2000-10-05

Wow, what a terrific and insightful method of conquering compulsive overeating! After getting her book and companion workbook, I called Marian and now work with her directly to further achieve success. It works!

5 out of 5 stars It's More Than About Your Weight.......2000-08-08

This book goes so much more beyond just weight loss. It deals with the issues of what causes you to turn to food, or as in my case, what makes you have a dysfunctional relationship with food and with yourself. As a recovered anorexic, this book has helped me deal with so many of the issues in my life that I was never really ready to deal with. It has helped me learn to set boundaries with people, therefore enabling me to have healthier realationships with those in my life that I love. Most of all though, reading Marian's words has helped me to reach a level in my life where I am taking better care of myself than ever before. With this book and the self-exploration that it will teach you, will be able to change the things in your life that you want to change through your own thoughts and actions. Best of all for me now, I am able to "deal" with those things in my life that I never thought I could before, instead of turning to food, diet and weight pre-occupation. I feel like I have my life back! Thank you Marian!!

5 out of 5 stars Reconnecting to who we were meant to be . . ........2000-07-27

Reading Marian's words causes thoughts to flow with new clarity. She has helped me to reconnect to who I was meant to be physically, spiritually and emotionally. I always look forward to writing about the thoughts she inspires. Getting to know myself has been a wonderful adventure. With her deep experience in coaching people through "The Shape of You", Marian has devoped the intuition and experience to help people, really help themselves. "Journey to the Shape of You" is about awareness and living. It is gentle, honest, and straight forward. The best part about working through this journey isn't even the fact that I don't have a weight problem that I struggle with anymore. It is being peaceful and being able to raise my children with awareness, with personal boundaries, with a strong and real sense of self so that they live in the light of awareness and won't fall into the same diet trap I did. I would (and often do) recommend "Journey to the Shape of You" to anyone that has struggled with their weight and wants weight to no longer be an issue in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Sensitive, easy to read.......2000-07-24

This book is excellent! I have lost over 20 lbs on this program without dieting. I loved the journal exercises and discovered a lot about why I was turning to food in the first place. Marian has a 'genius' when it comes to addressing the needs of the compulsive eater. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with their weight.

For all the claims of globalization, says Robert A. Pastor, a handful of countries still define the world at the end of the 20th century--and will continue to do so in the 21st. Along with six other foreign-policy scholars, Pastor examines the recent history of the world's seven "great powers" (France, Germany, Russia, Great Britain, China, Japan, and the United States) to demonstrate how they have influenced--and adapted to--the upheavals of the 20th century. They also offer some thoughts on what the "Liberal Epoch" to come will bring: if Russia and China are not fully welcomed into the community of great powers, Pastor warns, conflict is inevitable. And while international law and tribunals will continue to play an important role, they will require strengthened means of monitoring and enforcement if they are to be effective. A Century's Journey is a bit policy-wonkish for the general reader, but it does offer some carefully considered insights into how the nations of the world will deal with each other in the coming decades.

    Book Description

This incisive study of the evolving world order argues that seven countries have changed the world during the twentieth century and predicts their continued centrality in the twenty-first.

Will the world of the twenty-first century be dominated by global companies, ethnic strife, or rogue tyrants with weapons of mass destruction? This definitive volume argues convincingly that the answer depends on the actions of the world's great powers, who will continue to set the rules affecting globalization, culture, and pariah regimes.

Will the world of the twenty-first century be dominated by global companies, ethnic strife, or rogue tyrants? This definitive volume argues convincingly that the answer depends on the actions of the world's great powers, which will continue to set the rules affecting globalization, culture, and pariah regimes.

In A Century's Journey, seven influential scholars trace the global strategies of the world's most powerful countries during the past 100 years. Through authoritative chapters on each great power, readers will learn how these countries redefined their interests in response to momentous changes and reshaped the world so that it bears only slight resemblance to the world of 1900.

The scholars and their areas of expertise are Professors Robert A. Pastor (United States), Stanley Hoffman of Harvard University (France), Josef Joffe, Editor of Suddeutsche Zeitung (Germany), Robert Legvold of Columbia University (Soviet Union/Russia), Robert J. Lieber of Georgetown University (Great Britain), Michael Oksenberg of Stanford University (China), and Kenneth Pyle of the University of Washington (Japan).

5 out of 5 stars Useful insight for global business........2000-02-26

To understand business in the new century, we need to understand the political and cultural forces shaping global power. Pastor and his six other renowned foreign policy co-authors argue that the key to understanding the world's future lies in how the great powers shaped the 20th century. This book helps us understand the recent history of political influence on markets. Pastor adds to his own important chapters contributions by six of the world's leading experts on their respective powers, e.g. China, Japan, Germany, etc. The book is clearly written and Pastor does an admirable job integrating both the contributions from the separate regional experts and the lessons from the past that aid our forecasts for the future. This book teaches us much about the political and cultural issues driving power relationships and leadership in the global economy.

After being asked by hundreds of new clients, "How do I begin a journal?" I decided to put together a journal workbook with the emphasis on healing a dysfunctional relationship with food and compulsive overeating. This book will start you off on your journey to discovering and recovering your ideal weight through the process of journaling.

5 out of 5 stars getting quiet with self.......2002-07-10

one of the hardest things I've ever tried to accomplish is to just sit with myself and my thoughts without turning to any other distraction to keep myself from being still. I am a compulsive everything, and it just so happens that over-eating has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever tried to conquer. After reading the book and getting the journal, I placed the journal aside for a while and then just recently picked it up. I'm so amazed at how this has helped me...not only with food but with other addictions as well. Jounaling is easy and it helps to get in touch with your true self. The book asks simple questions and it's funny how answering something simple can point to what the problem is. I'm so thankful that I've finally found something that works and it's helping me know myself better.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful journal.......2002-07-05

This journal has helped to keep me focuses on the war against compulsive overeating. I take it to work and journal on my breaks and then again at night when all I used to do was eat until I went to bed.
It has a great introduction and then postive, thought provoking statements at the top of the page to keep me motivated to write about what I feel instead of numbing out what I feel with food.

      I love this journal!!!

1 out of 5 stars basically an empty notebook.......2002-06-07

I was disappointed with this, I had expected it to have additional writing exercises in it not covered by the book. Unfortunately, it is mostly just blank paper (with fancy squiggles at the tops of the pages) for you to write in. Unless you find the matching cover especially motivating save your money and buy an inexpensive notebook or use your computer for your journaling (or spend your money on a truly special journal that you pick out yourself). This offers nothing that the book itself does not.

      5 out of 5 stars Journaling!Journaling!.......2000-07-29

Journaling! Who me? I know all my thoughts. Why should I journal? Through Marian's program I realized that all these thoughts of wisdom I had, were repeating themselves again and again. But, what I realized through Marian's journal workbook was that I accepted what I was learning about myself and not repeating these thoughts again in my mind.

                          Product Description

Black and white pamphlet, this illustrated checklist is a hybrid between the list compiled by the Botany Department of the University of Tennessee and former Chief Naturalist Arthur Stupka, and the drawings in the New Britton and Brown Illustrated Flora. The groupings by families follows the system used in Wild Flowers of the United States.

5 out of 5 stars cottonmouth still waters.......2002-06-27

I'd been a half step behind him for the last two thousand miles and then the lights went-out.I came to on a flat rock
with giant trees spinning quietly above me.
Propped-up on an elbow, I looked around. Through my painful head I saw a beauty. Eastern woods. Lush and thick.
Needing a drink of water, my cupped hand dipped into the stream next to my rock. Bang. Disbelief, a shake of my hurting head. Then: Bang. This water wasn't moving.
I tried a refocus. Another shake. And Bang.
He'd lost me again, what in the world was I going to tell Pepsi?
