Book Description
A siren sounded in the Royal Palace. Regina, the seventeen-year-old queen, turned on her battle screen. She watched an unknown enemy ambush one of her fleets. Tears flowed down her face, as she watched the destruction of sixty of her carriers and the slaughter of over seven million of her military. Suddenly, Regina faced a serious choice. She could either accept her role as commander in chief of her military, or continue to leave her responsibility in the hands of the Joint Chiefs. If she left her military in the hands of the Joint Chiefs, the glaring mistakes, which she saw in this disastrous battle, would never be corrected. Regina chose to accept her role as commander in chief and to live on a carrier. Standing before the battle screen that was still showing the sixty destroyed carriers, Regina promised the dead crews that a disaster like this would never happen again. This is the chronicle of how the Queen's personal carrier, Raptor, became a terror to pirates, dictators, and invaders throughout the universe. This chronicle involves the reader in the dream of Regina. The reader becomes involved in a basic truth of life. Dreams are not just given to a person; dreams are fought for. This struggle to obtain her dream forces Regina to grow, giving her the capacity to live her dream, as she obtains her dream. The reader not only feels Regina's struggles, but also her victories.

THE BEST BOOK EVER!.......2006-09-24
i learned a lot from this book especially about cliques, and friends, and that its hard sometimes for girls at that age to get along. Then it's the princess of pop, then its teen queens and has beens. and then the fourth, starstruck is my second favorite out of the whole series, and then its double dare. After that its midsummer meltdown which is my favorite out of the whole thing, becuase its the most jam packed, out of the series and it has so many exciting things happening at the same time. This series is sooo0o0o0 good!!

Pretty decent!.......2005-09-25
I read this book in one night... from 1 to 3 in the morning... not one of those books you just CAN'T put down, more like one of those that just flows so smoothly there doesn't seem like a place you can end it till you read till the end...
The Lia character was too perfect, and the Kaylie character was too mean. Everybody has a good side and bad traits... Lia almost seemed like a "Mary Sue".
Plus it really didn't teach much of a lesson, didn't hold a deeper meaning, a bit typical, and just one of those books I'll read to the end simply because I can't find a place to stop, but afterwards, I feel nothing and will probably forget about it.
I suppose it flowed nice but the story just wasn't deep enough like Christopher Pike's books or Anne Rice's.
The Mean Girl.......2005-08-01
*TQAHB is quite a realistic story about a pretty and sweet girl (Lia) who is bullied for no good reason by the school Bitch.
Via rumours, smirks and giggles, threats and general bitchiness.
Lia is a sensitive, peaceful and down-to-Earth girl who is cut to the quick by the nastiness and she tries to get through to the mean girl. But no matter how nice she is or how forgiving she tries to be or what she does, nothing changes. Lia comes to a point where she must be strong or else sink into some leval of depression.
An enjoyable story tackling serious issues.......2004-12-11
The third installment in Cathy Hopkins's Truth or Dare series features Lia, daughter of a famous '80s rocker. Lia recently started going to school near her home after years of boarding in London. She loves her friends --- Cat, Becca, Squidge and Mac --- and just wants to fit in.
Popular "teen queen" Kaylie mentions that she likes Jonno, who in turn asks Lia out. Now Kaylie has it in for Lia, and starts a subtle bullying campaign that has Lia in knots every time she goes to school.
The pranks increase and get more serious, and Lia now thinks about returning to her school in London. But her new friends are not ready to give her up yet, and encourage her to stand up for herself. She tries to reason with Kaylie, but the girl is bent on humiliating Lia in any way she can. Lia also tries avoidance and shrinks within herself, attempting not to attract notice. The last thing Lia wants is a big confrontation, but soon she realizes that lots of other girls are bullied by Kaylie and her friends as well. It's time for it all to end.
Hopkins tackles the serious issue of girl bullying in the midst of an enjoyable story. This series remains strong.
American fans should realize that 'been' comes close to rhyming with 'Queen' in England, where the story is set.

All you need to know to start your own compost.......2007-08-26
I must say that I knew most of the stuff contained in the book, since the web contains a LOT of information. Nevertheless, the online info is quite dispersed. Here you can have all the knowledge in one book. Also, I did not give it 5 stars, because I think it still lacks a bit of professionalism; the author indeed knew a lot from decades for worm composting, but still, a lot of her knowledge was empiric and seems unsure of some of the causes. For instance, she emphasizes a lot on cold climates and gives little info on hot climates.
Good Instructions.......2007-07-04
This book had very compete instructions on the worm composting system. In fact, it was so good, that after reading it, I decided that the amount of care they would need was more than I wanted to take on.
Recycling to the Max.......2007-06-09
More and more people are developing an interest in non-toxic methods of horticulture and agriculture. Not only that, but the limitations of landfills, the expense of fossil fuels, and the growing body of evidence showing a relationship between human activity and global warming is leading us to consider the wisdom of recycling. Everything. So here we are with a natural, inexpensive method of enriching our soil, and making it disease and pest resistant. This book is a great introduction to the topic of vermiculture. It may take a while before you actually get up the courage to do it, because the book does not adequately dramatize and address the fears and revulsions most people have to rotting, decomposition, and the like. But still, it's a good book.
Hurray for Worms.......2007-03-09
This book is very informative. My only negative comment is that sometimes the information is hard to find when going back for reference.
I've had my worms for 3 days now and a few have escaped. Overall they seem happy to eat the food I've put in the home I made for them, but plastic tubs the size and shape that she recommends are pretty impossible to find. I don't know if this is why some of them are trying to leave. I hope to get an upgrade in worm housing for an upcoming birthday and perhaps this will eliminate the wanderlust some of them are feeling.
How I rate "Worms Eat My Garbage" by Mary Appelhof.......2007-01-04
This is a great book! Not only was it easy to read, I found everything I needed to know and more. The book is filled with a nice blend of scientific information presented with a light-hearted often amusing approach.

For the ecology minded, teachers, homeschoolers or anyone interested in activites to show the importance of worms in keeping our planet clean and healthy this is an absolute must have book.. Activities for all grade levels, nicely supplement Mary Appelhof's book Worms Eat my Garbage. I have never been so excited by a book. Kids of all ages will find the subject matter fascinating, even those afraid of "slimy" things.

The Earth Moved has moved reviewers across the country. In witty, offbeat style, Amy Stewart takes us on a subterranean adventure and introduces us to our planet’s most important gatekeeper: the humble earthworm. It’s true that the earthworm is small, spineless, and blind, but its effect on the ecosystem is profound, moving Charles Darwin to devote his last years to studying its remarkable attributes and achievements.
With the august scientist as her inspiration, Stewart investigates the earthworm’s astonishing realm, talks to oligochaetologists who have devoted their lives to unearthing the complex web of life beneath our feet, and observes the thousands of worms in her own garden. Stewart’s “ease in gliding from worms to plants to humans will remind readers of John McPhee’s essays on canoes, oranges, the geology of America” (
Providence Journal). “Stewart’s book paddles along in [Rachel] Carson’s wake. Read her book and you’ll start to see how the rhododendron bed in front of your house is a kind of Mars for frontier science” (
The Boston Globe).

Very fine creative journalism.......2007-10-07
I prepared for a difficult read when I started into this book. I was not aware of Ms Stewart's journalistic abilities. Wow! Did I get a surprise.
The book is chock full of useful information, but it is presented in an entertaining and most readable way. I started reading for information and kept on to the end for pure pleasure.
Dividing the topic into logical but intriguing sections, the writer investigates all aspects of earthworms, thoroughly. She has a personal approach that is enthusiastic without being over the top. I found that not only did I learn facts, but I was made to think more deeply and widely about all aspects of earthworms.
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in gardening or horticulture - in fact to anyone who would like to understand the natural world better.
I've Always Liked Earthworms, But Now I Respect Them.......2007-07-03
Amy Stewart manages, in a delightful blend of research and chatty prose, to convey the drama of the not-so-simple earthworm. I'd never considered that worms had thinking processes. Nor had it occurred to me that those cute little crawlers (YES, I consider them cute!) might, in some areas of the USA, be considered detrimental.
Ms. Stewart (no relation to me, by the way) has accomplished what so many backyard gardeners fail to do. She has asked Why? She has found the answers. She has put them in easily-digestible form for the rest of us. Don't we all need to know that earthworms can successfully be used in managing waste-treatment? Wouldn't it help if we all knew the different types of earthworms and what their strengths are in the yard/gardenenvironments?
THE EARTH MOVED is fun and thought-provoking at the same time. Definitely five stars, especially for gardeners.
What a Surprise!.......2006-11-11
I purchased this book in the hope of finding an essay I read many years ago. I didn't find the essay. However, what I did find was an entertaining book about earthworms. The book is an easy read, filled with thought provoking facts and a new found appreciation for what these "little guys" do for all of us.
One amazing fact after another!.......2006-08-01
Amy really did some great research here. I like the way she laid out all the details and drew so much on Darwins' studies. I don't know much about Darwin, which will change of course, but I'm amazed at what he discovered like how the worms have the ability to bring objects underground no matter what the size, a possibility of a thought process when picking stones to cover their borrows and chosing leaves to bring into thier borrows. The part about Darwin sticking a stink beatle in his mouth when he was young is hilarious! I also am estonished to know that worms can be a draw back to an environment as well, like how their consumption of leaves on forest floor can be a disadvantage to new growth of trees and plants, something I didn't know was possible. But not alot of people do know it or think of it.
Anyway, if you compost using worms like I do, or are just curious about them, read this book. It may even answer questions you might have about them as it has for me. Example: What happens when a worm dies? How do they mate? Wanna know? Then read and enjoy!
Add my name to the list of enthusiasts.......2006-01-03
As a gardener, I received this book for Christmas from my daughter-- and loved it. It renewed my enthusiasm for the compost bin in my backyard, and for the backyard itself. As a naturalist, I was surprised and delighted by all of the information on these busy little creatures. And as a guilty contributor to the mountains of garbage and sewage we humans dump onto the planet, I was most fascinated by the efforts of putting earthworms to work to help clean it all up. A great book from any number of angles!

Book Description
Since the publication of the highly-successful first edition of Earthworm Ecology, there were two international symposia and an increased number of publications on the subject, demanding a revision of the book that addresses the most rapidly developing areas of earthworm research. Earthworm Ecology, Second Edition updates the most comprehensive work available on earthworm ecology with extensive revisions of the original chapters. This well-illustrated, expansive study examines the important, and often overlooked, impact earthworms have on the environment. It discusses the impact of climate, soil properties, predation, disease and parasitism, and competition upon earthworm ecology. New chapters analyze the history of earthworm research, the importance of earthworms as representatives of soil fauna and how they affect plant growth, the effects of the invasion of exotic earthworms into North America and other regions, and vermiculture and vermicomposting in Europe and Asia. This new material makes this volume an essential reference work for soil scientists, agronomists, and others with a great interest in earthworms.
Customer Reviews:
Just What the Title Says.......2000-04-19
This 112-page papercover book is ideal for farmers, extension educators, soil conservationists, and crop advisors. Areas covered include the contribution of earthworms to good soil tilth, practical identification of common genera and species, biology of earthworms, earthworm habitat under various cultural practices, how to increase earthworm populations on the farm, effects of 193 agricultural chemicals on earthworms and a question and answer section. The author presents research findings from scientists as well as anecdotal data from farmers and others 'in the know'. An easy read, this book is a great place to start learning about earthworms under agricultural conditions. Many, many authorities and other contacts are listed in the back of the book. If you want to decrease run-off, lower your fertilizer bill, reduce erosion and make more money on your farm or for your grower clients, this book is the place to start.

Oh no? Oh Yes!.......2003-03-23
When I first heard that the Worm Queen in Kalamazoo (Mary Appelhof) had published a kids' book on vermicomposting, my reaction was cautious. Last year someone sent me one that was just too cute--and inaccurately showed red wigglers with eyes!
Hurrah for Compost, By Gosh!--it's just right! It combines charm with accuracy and clear, brief instructions for a parent who wants to say, "Yes!" to the child who begs, "Mom, can we have worms composting in our house?"
Can't wait to read it at Earth Day 2003 celebration to children who live in my six-building apartment complex in New York City. -Naomi Dagen Bloom, Composting in Manhattan
Easy to follow, step-by-step instructions for young people.......2003-03-11

Lots Of Good Info For the Money!.......2001-07-24
I've been looking at a lot of different earthworm related books, and this one is well written, without a lot of fluff. These folks have been raising worms for nearly 50 years, and they've put some good guidelines down in a small book with good illustrations. It's a bargain!
Book Description
This exciting book shows children how to set up and care for their own vermi-composter. Worm bodies and their lifecycle are also explained.

Useful Teaching Tool.......2000-07-03
Squirmy, Wormy Composters is a unique book that teaches children about vermicomposting. It has clear illustrations and language about worm anatomy and reproduction on a child's level. (Not easy to find anywhere else!) There are many photographs of children interacting with worms which can help to overcome the 'yuck' reaction. I have found this book to be a terrific teaching tool.
Good start for worms in the classroom.......2000-04-23
Teachers: This book will give you confidence in teaching about worms and composting. Intermediate primary students are also able to read and understand the text. Some of the sections include "Starting a vermi-composter," "Feeding your worms," "How a worm eats," and a cute fairy tale that demonstrates the importance of worms. This book is an excellent teacher resource.
