Book Description
For more than 30 years, the majority of researchers have assumed quiescence to be the default state of all cells and so have provided cells in culture with "growth factors" to allow them to proliferate. During this time, many putative growth factors have been identified and ever more complect mechanisms through which they could interact and stimulate cells have been proposed. However, quiescence as the default state does not make evolutionary sense and many sets of data do not support this hypothesis. In "The Society of Cells", an alternative explanation for these results is proposed by applying the premise that the default state must be proliferation, with division and multiplication being "built in" properties of life.
The authors begin by reviewing the concepts and theories that guide research ont he control of cell proliferation and cancer, and asking the question "what is the nature of the default state of all cells - quiescence or proliferation?" Later chapters concern cancer, where cell proliferate at above normal rates and the usual tissue organization is lost.
Despite decades of work and financial support to explore the somatic mutation theory, we appear no nearer to explainin what causes cancer. This requires researchers to take stock and consider new hypotheses and alternative approaches to the study of cell proliferation, and cancer in particular. "The Society of Cells" is intended to encourage such a re-evaluation.

One book to read.......2002-12-20
The controversy is about the default status of any cell, is it idle or is it proliferating. Author provides many experimental facts indicating that it is prioliferating. Most interesting was EPO hormone delivered by the kidneys to boost erythrocyte production in which case author indicates that EPO hormone doe not increase the production but rather inhibits the immature cell dying which in final analysis amounts to increase in erythrocytes. It sound philosophical but it is also rather fundamental issue. I recommend to all persons interested in subject of Microbiology of the Cell.
There is not much about the subject of Cancer except the whole theory changes the thinking in the approaches to cell prolifiration.
Control of cell proliferation.......1999-06-25
The major manifestation of cancer is a tumor. It starts when a normal cell turns cancerous. The progeny of this transformed cell makes the tumor. It is a cell society that continually expands. Cells are born, age and die. Since tumor grows, more and more cells are born. This feature distinguishes the tumor from a normal tissue, whose cell content generally does not increase. Thus the initial transformation of the normal cell is linked with a change of cell control. Harness it and you have solved the riddle of cancer. Most cancer scientists search for this clue in the cell itself, claiming that genetic changes bestow the cancer cell with its proliferative capacity. Accordingly, the newly transformed cancer cell is stimulated to proliferate better than its normal parent and subsequent genetic changes improve this ability. Yet this seemingly simple assumption may be wrong. At least according to what Sonnenschein and Soto claim in their stimulating book. Place, for instance, a piece of healthy skin in tissue culture, and it starts proliferating much faster than in the body. Apparently this normal tissue was freed from body control and proliferates vividly. Like skin, all cells thrive to divide as much as possible but are precluded from achieving their goal by the organism. The organism controls its cells by inhibiting their "natural urge" and any increase of proliferation is achieved by restraining this inhibition, or by "de inhibition." This is the motto of "The Society of Cells", and its novel and important message. Normal as well as cancerous cells are constrained by their society. Sonnenschein and Soto point to an unexplored realm of cancer and their message is clear and vivid. It is directed to cancer specialists, and particularly to biologists that study proliferation. This important book ought to be included in the biological and medical curriculum of students. It is recommended also to the lay public with basic biological knowledge.
A sobering learning experience........1999-04-29
I read this book with apprehension because of it was recommended to me as controversial. This is a messy subject not always treated with insight. The style is direct, pleasant (at times, funny), and not patronizing. the first part on cell proliferation is original and compelling. But,the juiciest part is the one dealing with carcinogenesis. The authors ask the candid questions I was afraid to ask, so not to appear as ignorant before assertive researchers who are more interested in winning an argument than on offering a well-thought line of avidence. The more I read , the more startled I became. these guys seem to know very well their biology, and their sources of information, I was swayed by their idiosyncratic views on how cancer evolves. I wonder what those who are wedded to the never ending story of more and more mutations needed for cancer to arise think about this book (before, I read R.A. Weinberg's "One Renegade Cell", their respective approaches are like day and night. Who is right?). I recommend "The Society of Cells" highly , especially if you don't mind looking at cancer induction on a totally different perspective. A sobering learning experience.

This inspiring autobiography from two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Brett Favre provides an honest, detailed look at the author's personal struggles along the way to becoming a successful pro quarterback. After overcoming an injury from a serious automobile accident in college, drug addiction early in his professional career, and persistent doubts about his ability to lead the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl, Favre met his challenges head-on and established himself as one of the sport's superstars.
Book Description
Last year, Brett Favre made NFL history. He became the first player to win three consecutive Most Valuable Player awards and the first to throw thirty or more touchdown passes in four straight seasons. And, again, he was voted by his peers into the Pro Bowl--the fifth time in his short seven-year career. But perhaps the most impressive statistic is that Brett Favre has the longest playing streak among all quarterbacks in the NFL. Despite a weekly pounding from playing in football's toughest division (nicknamed the "black and blue" division), he has started in 106 consecutive games and enthusiastically drives the fortunes of the Green Bay Packers. Brett Favre has fun and simply has no quit in him.
Born the son of an indomitable high school football coach and a warm but strict mother and teacher, Favre learned about inner fortitude early on. He has had his share of adversity--a car accident when he was in college that forced doctors to remove a large portion of his intestines, a notorious bar fight in the early part of his career, the death of a close friend, the rumors and doubts about his ability to win the big one. But it was admitting to himself that he was addicted to painkillers and voluntarily examining his life inside out that really brought Brett to where he is today--centered, committed, and full of excitement and determination about the future. Brett simply doesn't know any other way. Favre: For the Record is brash, straightforward, fun-loving, and deeply moving--everything fans have come to expect from Brett Favre.

For The Record!(...).......2004-03-28
First I want to say something about the book. It's great!! If your a true fan of the Packers and want to know about one of the teams, and NFLs greatest players, buy this book. It shows you the kind of person Favre is on and off the field. He takes you through the ups and downs of his life and career that have made him the person and player he is today. Now, for the other reviews I read before writing this one. What promted some numbnuts to write about the packers loss to St. Louis in the playoffs in a book review?? They must be a Bears fan! Another one decided to write that Brett and his family were (...) That's intelligent. I know when I go to read a review about a book that interests me, I want to have to wade through the garbage that idiots like that jerk take up space with. For those of you with a brain in your head, trust me, Farve: For The Record is a great read!!
Book for the T.V.soaps fans.......2000-07-30
This is a good book ,the problem came from the fixation they put on his painkillers addiction and the problems it bring with his wife and teammates. You also have a lot of details about the health problems this addiction caused to him,a little bit like "Drugs is bad to you,see what it do to me."His wife almost let him down for that, his teammates are tired of him asking for Vicodin and others painkillers. The two or three first paragraphs talk about that, but chapter after chapter they come back with it.The book talk to much about his "post popularity" life and not enough of him when he was unknown. His "post popularity" life are report in all the daily newspapers, that why I expect to learn more about Bret Favre before he was a star. They pass to fast on his teens years, his collegiate years. The reason to write a biography his to talk about the unknown parts of someone life, but in this book you just found what everybody read on the last five years newspapers. That a good but incomplete book.
Best book ever written!.......2000-05-28
Favre for The Record is the best book I ever read.It is totally a must buy.
Brett Favre's European fan club!.......2000-05-10
As a Londoner, who learnt to appreciate American football at 21, I wanted background reading to enhance my enjoyment. I started by looking into favourite players of mine, so came this book!
I wanted to understand what goes on in players mind before a big game. How they react to the coach barking orders. How they conduct themselves on and off the field. This book helped me to do all these things and more. Favre is not a roboback, he is an individual with flair and creativity, which is why this book is so entertaining.
I seem to be able to climb right on into Brett's head, and into his personal life through the pages in this book, which is enlightening to say the least. We hear about his highs and lows, and he is frank about his addiction to Vicodin, and his relationships with players and coaches alike.
I think this book is for American Football fans only, which explains why this was my first Amazon purchase, (This book isn't in print in the UK) but for a fan of the Packers, or just a Football fan in general, you can do no wrong in buying this, which will no doubt increase your respect for the stress players endure every game.
A tell-all tale of Brett's Southern life.......1999-10-26
It contains everything you'd ever want to know about painkillers. He tells the harsh facts about vicodin and other addictive drugs and the troubles he had in breaking the habit. Favre tells of a car wreck that almost ended his playing days. A truly great book for the football fan- or if you're a fan of life.
Book Description
Just one day after losing his father, Irvin Favre, to a heart attack and fatal car crash, Brett Favre took the field for a Monday Night Football game against the notorious Oakland Raiders. Even with the Green Bay Packers clinging to a slim chance for a playoff spot, his teammates and his adopted city didn’t expect Brett to suit up.
Big Irv was the game to Brett. As his coach at Hancock North Central High School in Kiln, Mississippi, Irv taught Brett the importance of execution, precision, and sacrifice. He rarely let Brett throw the ball; rather, he had him lead the run-oriented wishbone offense, which required him to handoff and then block for his teammates. When no major college had any interest in Brett as a quarterback, Irv got the University of Southern Mississippi to give him a shot as a defensive back. And when Brett did the impossible at Southern Miss–moving from defense to the team’s starting quarterback his freshman year–Irv was there the whole way.
Prior to the Raider game, Favre had started an exhausting 189 games straight (an NFL record) and was nursing a broken finger on his throwing hand since the early weeks of the 2003 season. Rumors of his retirement circulated among the press–he was in his thirteenth year–and while no one said it out loud, most commentators believed Brett was a shadow of his former self.
But what happened in the Oakland twilight on December 22, 2003, is the stuff of NFL legend. Brett Favre sealed his reputation as one of the greatest football players in history.
“I knew that my dad would have wanted me to play,” he said after throwing for just under 400 hundred yards and four touchdowns to rout the Raiders. “I love him so much, and I love this game. It meant a great deal to me, to my dad, and to my family, and I didn't expect this kind of performance. But I know he was watching.”
FAVRE is a dazzling tribute to the roller-coaster football life of Brett Favre, with personal family photos and remembrances, stunning four-color action shots, and inspiring stories of a lifelong love affair with the all-American game.

DVD is great. Book is OK........2007-07-08
Anyone who loves Brett Favre will love the DVD. Anyone who hates Brett Favre will love the DVD! The book is a bit boring, unless you just can't get enough Brett Favre. John Madden will love it. :)
How to get teenager to read.......2007-06-14
I bought this for my Farvorite (pardon the pun) grandson who hates to read. I figured if it had anything to do with the Bretser he'd read it.
It worked!!
One Word Says It All.......2007-02-06
This is a great book. Now, admittedly, I'm a major Brett Favre fan and, because of that, I will confess that I am biased. Biased or not, however, one cannot refute the fact that the book is an excellent representation of the man on and off the field. Add to it the accompanying DVD and you hear it in his own voice. And there are parts of it that are very funny.
This is a personal book and one gets the impression that it was done out of love for his father, as well as the game of football. In his own voice, you will hear Brett describe his successes and his failures and it is all based around an event--the death of Brett's father and Green Bay's subsequent game against Oakland--that shows his determination, courage, and ability.
Buy it; read it; and you won't be disappointed with it.
Favre.......2006-01-17
This is a great book. It keeps you interested and the pictures are amazing. The best part is the DVD that's included because it has a lot of audio while Brett is on the field that you would never hear otherwise.

A concise look at Brett Favre.......2007-04-22
Reviewed by David Olvera for Reader Views (3/07)
"Brett Favre: A Packer Fan's Tribute" does not mince words and the book stays true to its title. Kertscher evaluates Favre's legendary career from crummy rookie in the pro ranks to NFL god. Rather than a long and microscopic analysis of the patron saint of Lambeau, the author cuts to the chase and offers great snapshots of Favre's career. Favre's beginnings, his hallmark comebacks, the Super Bowl, the MVPs, all laid out in clean episodes.
Kertscher also stays true as a fan. You can easily tell the author is endeared to the Packers and he relates that fandom to the reader. You cannot help but relate to Favre, the Packers, and their fans after reading this book. Sure Favre is an All-American, apple pie, Stars and Stripes kind of guy, but the author's examination of his career and even his addiction to painkillers takes you that much closer to being apart of the Green Bay scene.
I would have liked to have seen closer examinations of his personal life, especially his relationship with his father. Although I am not a Packer fan, the passing of Favre's father and Brett's on-field performance afterward was a profound NFL moment regardless of affiliation. I won't knock the author too much for it though...too close an examination would not fit well with the book's overall theme and feel.
The author's writing style is quick and to the point. I get the feeling that Kertscher isn't going for a Pulitzer and that makes the book very versatile. You can hand this book to any child and they could easily become a "Cheese Head." A great coffee table or waiting room piece...or simply what the title says...a book for fans. "Brett Favre: A Packer Fan's Tribute" is not the essential autobiography of Favre, but its strength is in its candid approach to the career of an NFL great.
Great for ALL Football Fans.......2007-01-18

Book Description
Know what constitutes normal and abnormal animal behavior. If you are involved with animal legal issues, you will find that Animal Law and Dog Behavior gives all the information you need to decide what courses of action are possible and appropriate. A veritable refresher course on the legal matrix concerning animals, it focuses on the species most troublesome to individuals and the legal system: dogs. With up-to-date information on the current state of the law, most cases examined are lower-court opinions from 1960 to the present. Well reasoned and analyzed, they may be used to draw together the national outlook on a particular issue. In areas where state statutes play a predominant role in articulating the law, the authors have selected regional states whose statutes are most representative of these areas. As animals become an increasingly important part of our lives, disputes between people about animals and conflicts between people and animals are likely to increase. For this reason, it is especially important for attorneys to understand which behaviors are considered normal and which are considered abnormal. Topics covered:
Animal behavior related to dogbite statutes
Behavioral discovery in dog-related injury cases
Defenses for owners
Ethology and epidemiology of canine aggression
Evaluation of fatal dog bites
Liabilities of an owner or keeper
Pack behavior of dogs
Rights of ownership
The dog bite problem
Veterinarian malpractice

Favre's a favorite.......2006-02-23
I bought two copies of this book for my sons, who both like to cook. They have both enthusiatically endorsed the recipes and like the heartiness of them. The foods are simple, yet have a real southern taste and don't call for exotic ingredients that are impossible to get.
Favre's cookbook.......2005-08-19
Even though the Packers aren't the greatest team in the world, their quarterback knows a thing or two about good gulf coast cooking. The easy to follow recipes have turned out great results with little effort. Try the gumbo, it's the bomb!
Wonderful Book, Wonderful People - Highly Recommend.......1999-10-22
I have had the good fortune of being at some of the Favre cookouts and events they gave hosted the past couple of years. My wife and I have always loved the food - the Favre's have always put on a terrific display of food. With this book we have now been able to cook some of these meals at home. The recipes are very easy to follow and the results are truly delicious. Our favorites are Meemaw's Super Bowl Shrimp Creole, Scott's Paneed Pork Chops, and Chicken a la Clark - and those are the only ones we have tried so far! It is obvious that the Favre family has put a lot of time and effort into this book. Besides the wonderful recipes, there are terrific pictures, interesting stories, amusing Favre anecdotes, and helpful cooking tips. The book is top-notch and The Favre's should be very proud.
We highly recommend this book. Bon Apetite...

Brett Favre is hot........1999-01-31
My friend and I really admire Brett and the entire Packers team. Being from Washington, we were thrilled to see Mike Holmgren come to the Seahawks. However, Brett is still the best QB in the NFL and this book offers a personal look at different aspects of Favre. It is our dream to one day meet Brett.
Book Description
When the Green Bay Packers won Super Bowl XXXI after a drought of twenty-nine years, the man leading the legendary team to victory was Brett Favre. That 1996 season solidified his reputation as one of the premiere quarterbacks in the NFL, and his popularity among players, coaches, and fans is unmatched.
With more than 120 color photographs by award-winning photographer Marc Serota, who previously collaborated with Dan Marino, John Elway, and Troy Aikman, Brett Favre shows us the man behind all the awards and records.
Since joining the Packers, Brett has engineered six straight winning seasons on his way to being named the NFL's MVP for a record three years. At the young age of twenty-eight, Favre is already one of the greatest quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen. He is so recognizable that he even garnered a cameo role in the smash hit There's Something About Mary.
We join Brett at home with family and friends and in the midst of battle on the field. Captured in photos and words are Brett's consummate sportsmanship and determination to succeed. Brett Favre produces a unique snapshot of a legend in the making.
