Book Description
"It was a flowing emerald in spring and summer when the boundless winds ran across it, a tawny ocean under the winds of autumn, and a stark and painful emptiness when the great long winds drove in from the northwest. It was Beulahland for many; Gehenna for some. It was the tall prairie."from the prologue
Originally published in 1982, Where the Sky Began, John Madson's landmark publication, introduced readers across the nation to the wonders of the tallgrass prairie, sparking the current interest in prairie restoration. Now back in print, this classic tome will serve as inspiration to those just learning about the heartland's native landscape and rekindle the passion of longtime prairie enthusiasts.

John Madson- a later day Leopold.......2006-01-02
The late John Madson was the equivalent of a later day Aldo Leopold. He was gifted in writing about the natural world and drawing a connection to mankind. This book does that for man and the tallgrass prairie. In this book, Madson examines man's relationship with the prairie and the creatures that call the prairie home. Madson presents a narative that is both insightful and entertaining and makes a strong case for why the tallgrass prairie should be preserved and restored.
John Madson -- Brilliant.......2001-12-03
I once got lost with John Madson in the Great Batchtown Swamp, but I never got stuck in any of his books -- he is a great outdoorsman and writer, who always takes your imagination somewhere interesting (and often useful). He wrote the best book ever on The Pheasant, a wee paperback that he dashed off in a couple of weeks but which has never been bettered. It must be natural talent, but as Lee Trevino said, I had to hit a million practice balls before my natural talent began to show through. Willy Newlands (Scotland)
Where the Sky Began: A terrific book!.......2001-02-20
As a kid growing up in post-war Chicago suburbia, I got to see farmlands give way to housing tracts. The question I asked was "What was here before the farms?" Madson has the answer--prairie. Practically a million square miles of prairie and the first European settlers never had an idea that a vast expanse of grassland stretched roughly from the eastern border of Illinois to the Rocky Mountains.
Madson takes you to the prairie from an historical, personal, anecdotal, and geological perspective. You can practically see the prairie flora, feel the prairie air on your face, hear the prairie fauna calling you in this excellently written and touching book. Enjoy!
A down-home review of prairie ecology and culture.......1999-04-16
John provides a factful and sometimes comical look at prairie ecology and culture. A good first book for those interested in the prairie.
Book Description
Sports conditioning has advanced tremendously since the era when a "no pain, no gain" philosophy guided the training regimens of athletes. Dr. Tudor Bompa pioneered most of these breakthroughs, proving long ago that it's not only how much and how hard an athlete works but also when and what work is done that determines the athlete's conditioning level.
In Periodization Training for Sports, Bompa demonstrates how to use periodized workouts in order to peak at optimal times by manipulating six different training phases: anatomical adaptation, hypertrophy, maximum strength, conversion to power, maintenance, and transition. Coaches and athletes in 32 sports have at their fingertips a proven program that is sure to produce the best results. No more guessing about preseason conditioning, in-season workloads, or appropriate rest and recovery periods; now it's simply a matter of identifying and implementing the information in this book.
Presented in a useful format with plenty of ready-made training schedules, Periodization Training for Sports is your best conditioning planner if you want to know what works, why it works, and when it works in the training room and on the practice field. Get in better shape next season, and see the benefits of smarter workouts in competition.

Great information.......2007-06-01
This book is a great source for training intensities, workouts, and theory. That is what I liked most about this book. It does not just tell you to do "so-and-so" workouts if you want to get better... but, it tells you why you want to do those workouts so you can choose which workouts you want to do. I love the theory behind it.
A Complete Training Manual.......2007-04-09
This guide is so complete you would be hard pressed not to find something to help you excel at your sport. The program is based on solid research.
THE book for weight training.......2007-01-04
Bompa's book is the definite book on periodization strength training. Yes, it's heavy, full of technical terms and overwritten. But it's also comprehensive, relies on solid research and focuses on what works, not what's the latest fad.
Bompa speaks from experience and his book is chock full of solid, complete ideas on how to undertake sport-specific strength training program. He outlines strength training programs for 35 sports. That includes all the main sports but oddly leaves out golf while including alpine skiing and kayaking. Go figure.
Bompa has a PhD and has had a long and successful career. He speaks from experience and it shows. If you only buy one book on weightlifting and strength training, buy Bompa's book. Work your way through it. It takes some time but the results are worth it.
Useful, but could have used better organization.......2006-04-29
I give this book four stars because it is useful and informative, but not perfect. First, the positive parts:
There is enough information for a variety of sports from football to rowing to synchronized swimming to basketball. It lays out a hypothetical calendar for the offseason and inseason of the different sports and tells you what kind and how much training to do at the different phases of the season. There are no longterm plans with all the specifics layed out. There are some example workouts and examples of weeks of training. This book instead lays out a template and calls for the reader to fill in the blanks using the information obtained throughout the rest of the book. For this reason, you must read the whole book and learn how to create your own custom training program. If you are expecting to be able to look in this book and find a program for your sport with all the details laid out, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a program that does not call for you to do any of the planning, check out the '52 Week Training Series' books.
The book is sloppy in its organization. You will really need to read the entire book to get the most out of this. I recommend taking notes throughout your reading of the book. Pieces of information seem to be randomly strewn throughout the book.
For example, I started reading this book with the purpose of training for long distance running. I found some information about long distance running on one page, but then the subject suddenly changes to something else, like basketball, or rowing, or hockey, in the very next paragraph. There would be no more information on distance running until later in the book when i just happened to stumble across some more information a few chapters later.
Also, I noticed that some of the charts of info seem to contradict each other. For instance, in one chart for a specific type of training, say, maximum strength training, they recommend a specific amount of reps, sets, frequency, percentage of one rep max to be used, and rest intervals between sets. The same type of training will then be mentioned in another paragraph or chapter, only it will recommend different training parameters than the ones previously mentioned.
So the book is worth buying if you are willing to put in some work. If you buy this, follow these instructions:1.Read the book from front to back and pay close attention. 2.Go back through the book while taking notes on the parts that are most pertinent to your situation. 3. Use the gathered information to design your customized periodization program.
Good Resource for Fitness Industry People.......2006-02-19
I ordered this book to use as a learning tool while I was studying for my Fitness Trainer exam. While I found it useful, it is complex and not the simplest book to use for quick answers. It is "the book" if you want to understand how periodization works.
Customer Reviews:
Practical approach, but not for the novice.......2007-06-25
This books explains how to build up your own periodized training program.
Its practical approach and the step by step procedure make you understand how to reason when plannin g a periodized routine.
It is necessary, however, to have a clear understanding of the basic concepts of training, since no information is provided in this regard.
Falls Short.......2003-02-23
I was disappointed in this book. It advertises itself as containing "The Ultimate Training System," but does not live up to the title. It has some good material in it, and I appreciated the science-based support of the authors' theories. However, it is extremely light on practical examples. There are far better books out there to help you understand and develop "The Ultimate Training System." One I would recommend is The New Power Program: Protocols for Maximum Strength by Michael, Dr. Colgan.
This is the worst book on the subject of periodization!.......2000-02-03
I thought this book was terribly awful. Its more of a briefreview of periodization, not a book on the theory, and training. Itsalmost like a cheap, and sloppy version of cliff notes on Dr.Bompa's Serious Strength Training. I would not recommend Periodization Breakthrough to anyone. If you want the complete theory, and training methodology of Periodization for bodybuilding/strength training purposes, I very highly recommend Dr. Bompa's Serious Strength Training. It is I beleive the best written book on the topic!
Excellent--Teaches you how to create your own Peridization.........1999-11-19
This was a really detailed book. I have read "Serious Strength Training" by Bompa, however I felt that this book gave me more insight into creating my own custom periodization schedule. Bompa's book had most of it pre-planned. The book had excellent citations for research an gave me all the information I needed in a well laid out format.
Adress.......1999-04-27
I need the adress of Mr. Steven J. Fleck, Ph.D
Book Description
When it comes to designing programs for optimal training, Tudor Bompa's expertise is second to none. Bompa revolutionized western training methods when he introduced his groundbreaking theory of periodization in Romania in 1963. Today, periodization is the basis of every serious athlete's training.
Periodization is a scientifically based method for structuring short- and long-term training plans. Grounded in current research on exercise physiology, athletic psychology, and training methodology, periodization varies the intensity and volume of training to optimize the body's ability to recover and rebuild. This results in better performance and less risk of injury.
Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training presents Bompa's latest refinements to the theory he developed. Formerly titled Theory and Methodology of Training, this long-standing classic has been translated into nine languages and has come to be regarded as the definitive reference on training theory. Now in its fourth edition, it's even better organized, easier to read, and more up-to-date than before.
No other book discusses planning and periodization in such detail or with so many specific, practical examples from a variety of sports. Periodization clearly describes
- the underlying principles of effective training;
- the objectives and components of an effective, comprehensive, long-term training program;
- proven strategies for optimal peaking; and
- how to train for better motor ability, working capacity, skill effectiveness, and psychological adaptability.
Learn how to train for maximum gains with insights from the man who pioneered the concept of periodization. With Bompa's Periodization, you'll build stronger, faster, more durable athletes for better performance.
Customer Reviews:
Sports better than Theory.......2006-10-13
For practical use I would recommend Periodization Training for Sports
I got this book before Theory and Methodology of Training. And found that the theory did not bring to much new info
Not fo the novice athlete, but good........2005-08-26
This book is more geared towards coaches, especially those who coach elite athletes. If you are not a coach or an elite athlete (or aspire to be) then this book is probably not for you. It is overly wordy and technical, and the author tends to go off on random tangents frequently. That said, there are also some very valuable nuggets of information in this book that will enhance anyone's level of knowledge. I bought this book in the hopes that I would be able to build a periodized weightlifting routine, but after reading it I am no closer to being able to do that. I don't really think I'd want to go to the trouble anyway after reading this book, because I am not an aspiring elite bodybuilder. If you are just an average person looking for ways to improve your training there are a lot of great ideas in this book that may spark your own creativity, but don't expect specific detailed training regimes or specialized exercise plans from this book. And you really need above average intelligence and desire to discern what the author is trying to convey.
It works.......2002-10-30
15 years ago I was a high performance kayaker. I did not understand all those complicated workouts then ... Recently (3 years ago) I started kayaking seriously again and won age group competitions at all levels accross North America.
Periodization is what produces results. It is based on science which combined with expertise and experience will yield results. I have been watching the development teams and now involved in workout design. This book provides a clear description of the general issues and lets you peek into the specifics. Of course, you cannot just coach by reading a book. But if you are a coach or an athlete with serious experince, this book is going to make a lot of sense to you.
You can't argue with the king.......2002-08-06
If you are interested in a book that will help you map out your progress THIS IS THE BOOK!
The diffrense with Bompa and others is he started Periodisation and worked with elit athletes more than 30 years with this system.
He actually learns you something with his books and don't just say that he will. He writes a bit messy but that's maybe my limited english that is limiting me.
Oh well, a top notch book for the serious trainer and trainee.
in depth view.......2000-05-17
this book is very informative to those wanting to know more about periodization. It covers everything a person would need to know. Bompa's best text to date.
Book Description
Exploring periodization, this book discusses strength, speed, endurance, and nutrition and thoroughly explains the role of water, supplements, carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. It is intended to serve as a workbook that will help any athlete understand how nutrition can become part of their yearly, monthly, weekly and daily training to improve health and performance.

Voice of experience.......2007-10-09
Bob Seebohar is an experienced professional who not only teaches optimal health, but lives it every day. His reasoned and balanced instruction reflects both his work with the top athletes in the country as well as his personal passion for achieving the best state of fitness possible. I found the information in this book highly relevant even as a wanna-be athlete who only competes with the treadmill. Learning more about food and supplements has helped me fuel my workouts and maintain my weight--important goals for anyone!
Great Info.......2007-04-21
This book is awesome. A friend of mine recommended it to me and it is a brilliant concept. The author is very knowledgeable and very experienced. I highly recommend this read if you are a serious athlete.
Book Description
The strength training strategy of linear periodization has long been recognized as an efficient system of resistance training. But--until now--no one had researched and explored the potential benefits of a nonlinear periodization training program.
Authors William Kraemer and Steven Fleck delve into nonlinear, or undulating, periodization to examine how it can result in long-term fitness and performance gains by adding more variety to workouts and optimizing each training session. In doing so, Dr. Kraemer and Dr. Fleck pioneer this newest periodization training technique and have become the leading proponents of this unique training method. Their innovative approach to strength training is shown to facilitate the training process and enhance performance, a fact Dr. Kraemer has demonstrated in several ongoing studies with basketball teams at the University of Connecticut.
Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts explains how nonlinear periodization works and then demonstrates how to create nonlinear periodization training programs, including programs for special populations. Readers will learn that by creating different workouts for each day, they can emphasize exclusive training styles in every workout to maximize adaptation as well as ensure adequate recovery from the rigors of training. Fitness professionals and coaches will discover that this unique training style reduces the boredom encountered when using similar workout protocols for two to four weeks at a time and therefore lends itself to creating a more satisfied client base.
Using practical and user-friendly terms, the authors provide the knowledge required for understanding nonlinear periodization and training principles, selecting acute program variables, and discerning the practical considerations of nonlinear periodization before undertaking training. They also provide sample workouts using nonlinear periodization methods and discuss critical assessment techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of a program and determining training readiness. Fifty case studies at the end of the text serve as an exceptional feature for grasping a realistic approach of how nonlinear periodization meets physiological and scheduling demands while achieving optimal training goals.
No other book on the market teaches how to design, implement, and assess a nonlinear workout program. With knowledge gained through Optimizing Strength Training: Designing Nonlinear Periodization Workouts, professionals, coaches, fitness enthusiasts, and students will find themselves on the cutting edge of resistance training, able to employ this unique method of training that leads to superior performance.
