Helpful Guide.......2007-05-13
I've been using Rodney Yee's Moving Toward Balance as my main yoga guide. It's a wonderful book if you like a very structured approach to learning yoga. But it doesn't always provide enough detailed information about how to get into some of the more complex poses. And if you're a yoga rookie like me and have never seen the poses performed before, just looking at a photo of Rodney Yee looking perfect doesn't always help you figure out how to bend yourself into same shape. So I looked around for something to supplement Moving Toward Balance and selected Hatha Yoga Illustrated. It has both pictures and a step by step description of how to enter and exit a fair number of commonly used postures. It has certainly helped me decipher the lyrical but vague instructions occasionally encountered in Moving Toward Balance. But it doesn't have all of the postures I encounter in yoga class or in Moving Toward Balance, which considering how many there are, is to be expected. However, it does have a short selection of yoga practices (for flexibility, strength, sun salutations, etc.) that are easy to follow.
Hatha Yoga Illustrated is a helpful supplement to whatever other methods (yoga classes, other yoga guides, etc.) you may use. It might be a little light to be used as the sole guide for a complete novice. Are there better choices out there? Maybe.
Learn About Yoga Poses.......2007-04-12
Full-color images of yoga poses accompany instructions and explanations for each one. There are also alternative ways for people who've suffered injuries to do the poses.
Hatha Yoga Illustrated.......2007-01-18
I found this book very helpful because I had recently started a yoga class at my gym. I have problems with various part of my body which just kept getting sorer although I enjoyed to yoga class in general. I stuck it out for a while getting worse and worse and am so glad now that I've looked into the various poses myself. The book was very well illustrated and gave contraindications for the poses and showed alternate ways of doing each. This information was not given to me in class even though I told the instructor of my problems ahead of time. I have a whiplash injury, so this information would have been much appreciated prior to my messing my neck up even more.
Great Resource.......2006-06-26
I am new to yoga and really enjoying the classes. My instructors are great at explaining the poses but this book also helped me with detailed pictures of the poses and explainations of the breathing used through the poses. One feature I also like is that each poses includes gentle versions and a list of contraindications. I have spinal and joint issues that make this important.
While I think that a class is the best way to being your yoga journey this book is also a great help. Allowing you to review poses you learned in a session and expand your knowledge of this wonderful practice.
a real treat.......2006-06-13
this book presents hundreds of asanas, with beautiful illustrations and eminently understandable instructions. despite what the back cover says, I don't think I would recommend this book to a beginner. there are many other books out there, such as How to Use Yoga or The Sivananda Companion to Yoga, that provide more of the background and advice that a beginner needs. this book is basically a catalog of poses. unless you have a solid basis to work from it's probably not for you.
but if you have been practicing yoga for some time and are familiar with most of the poses and techniques, this book would be a great addition to your collection.
Book Description
From the author of the best-selling Yoga Deck comes Essential Yoga -- the only hatha yoga book to offer this many poses (over 100), this many illustrations (over 180), and this many suggested sequences (over 50). Practical and interactive, it focuses on the poses themselves, providing clear, concise instructions and detailed illustrations for each, all in a lay-flat format that's easy to refer to during yoga practice. It also includes six classic moving meditations (such as Sun Salutation and Camel Vinyasa), 10 beginner-to-advanced sessions, and 48 mini-sequences designed to build strength for specific activities or alleviate health problems. Essential Yoga combines physical poses (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayamas), and meditations (dhyanas) into a simple and complete reference guide for yoga practitioners of all levels. Along the way, author Olivia Miller provides guidance on proper technique and alignment; modifications for beginners or those with knee, neck, or back pain; suggestions for preventing injury; and ways to keep a regular practice interesting and active. For beginners as much as experts looking for one complete book that has it all, Essential Yoga is it.

A Yoga Medicine Chest.......2007-08-07
Essential Yoga is like a medicine cabinet for yoga practitioners. Inside are simple, precise, and thorough single-page guides to about 100 essential poses, warm-ups, meditations, and breath exercises...plus, what is far more important, two chapters full of creative and unique routines and sequences. Each pose is simply and crisply illustrated, and detailed instructions are given. (It's particularly nice that the book is sewn to lie flat, a feature which makes it quite easy to use while actually practicing! This nicely supports the premise of the book, which is to be a text that is for the practice of actual yoga--and not just "about" it.) Each pose includes English and Hindi names, suggested modifications and variations, and a sentence or two about its physical and mental benefits. What really makes this sublimely practical book a "medicine chest", however, are the sequences. From short vinyasas (everything from Camel to Sun and Moon Salutations) to complete workouts of several lengths and intensity levels, the back chapters of this book contain everything you need to begin a home practice for all moods and occasions. Best of all are the short series geared to various physical goals and/or ailments (from "Biking", "Golf" and "Skiing" workouts to programs for "Toxin Flush", "Cold Prevention" and "Depression")--they're effective and eminently doable.
Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations.......2007-07-19
This is by far one the best illustrated Yoga books I own. Very descriptive and many poses
How yoga helped me destress..........2007-03-18
I loved this book. I started yoga to destress from work, but I found that when the yoga instructor called out positions by name, I was lost. I found myself staring at what the instructor was doing and losing the benefit of yoga. This book not only helped me learn the positions, it also has some really great routines you can do at home.
This may be the answer !!!.......2005-09-26
This may be the answer to many questions in the domain of yoga. After reviewing many books and articles, I could say that Asana is a kind of exercise that involves stretching and strengthening your body in a relaxed way with easy breathing. But Yoga is entirely different. Asana is a small part of Hatha Yoga which is a small part of the YOGA.
The contemporary systems of different types of Asana Styles (not different types of yoga styles ) do not seem to handle the exercise part properly. Many of them are doors to injuries.
Based on the Medical Field, the exercise system should involve a warm up followed by a stretching routine and strengthening, endurance routines and cool down part. ( There is no question about Aerobics. You should have it whether you do asana or not, Walking,Jogging,Biking or any kind is a must )
The auther of this book, seem to understand the basic needs clearly and it reflects perfectly in the pages. Yes. if you do it correctly in the way He talks about here, Yoga, sorry Asanas will be so enjoyable and more than that, IT PAYS YOU BACK WITH GOOD RESULTS !!!.
Yes. That is true. There has been no definitions of how to do asanas. They are all defined by the Gurus in the mid 1900s. So doing it in a "Safe Way that suits YOU" is the best way to achieve results.
GREAT for EVERYONE!.......2005-08-18
This is the GREATEST yoga book!!! I wouldn't buy another. I'm a beginner and the illustrations (TONS!) are amazing. The book also gives you explanations on all positions and groups the exercises for the area that you want to focus on. The sessions range from 20 minutes to 1 1/2 hours!!!! EXCELLENT BUY!

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic introductory book for those interested in yoga.......2006-06-07
Where to begin? This is the most comprehensive guide to Yoga for beginners I've ever seen. It delves into background, history, breathwork, meditation, spirituality (not religion--it explains the difference), and, of course, the asanas, or poses. The information is interesting and lively, striking a nice balance between depth and simplicity. It's straightforward and clear, but with a playful tone.
Key to any good yoga book is a wide variety of asanas, or poses, to keep you interested. This book has several chapters including standing poses, balance poses, bends, inversions, and more. The information it provides is extensive and impressive.
Each posture includes at least one drawing of the properly-performed posture, and sometimes more than one showing it from different sides or angles. Often there are illustrations of posture variations, and sometimes there are ones showing you what not to do.
The asanas include warnings about things to watch out for and contra-indicated conditions, as well as variations for easing into the postures, or simpler/less stressful variations in case you simply can't do the full asana. Many of them also include more challenging variations as well, for once you've mastered the standard pose.
The authors' vinyasanas include a warming series, a high-energy series, and a mild/calming series. There are also several series for workouts of a particular length, including three five-minute sessions for when you only have a few minutes here or there, three 15-minute sessions, and a 30-minute and one hour session. Even better, the book includes instructions to help you construct your own vinyasanas!
All in all I'd say this is the perfect book for the beginner, or for someone who wants a full and thorough introduction to the world of yoga.
Everything you always wanted to know. . ........2006-03-07
i read this book for my book club, and the meeting of the club included a yoga class. It is VERY thorough. I liked the "ouch" boxes, which remind the reader that the goal is not to hurt oneself, or to push beyond one's limits. There is perhaps more of the philosophy than I might have wanted, but this would be a reader's personal preference. Photos very helpful.
Great for beginners.......2005-01-25
I recently got the urge to try yoga and figured a good place to start would be this book. I was right! It's written for anyone, it's instructions are easy to read and follow and the illustrations are great. They also sprinkle it with a little humor to lighten things up. They make learning yoga less intimidating and make it more likely for you to actually try it and keep doing it. If you're wondering about yoga and don't know where to start, then this is for you.
Does not meet expectations.......2005-01-20
I picked up this book with great expectations. The book does not necessarily shatter all that, but must say am not much impressed. Some breathing techniques appeared to be inaccurate while most yoga postures are not for real starters. Also, step-by-step posture with better and more pictures would be really good. In general, I think this deserves average rating.
A complete guide to take you from Beginner to Intermediate!!.......2004-08-19
I recently read this book and I must say it was a pleasure. This series is written as a "Complete Idiot's Guide," meaning the material is not only supposed to be easy to understand, it's also supposed to be comprehensive. This book is both, and it is nicely put together to boot.
For starters, I thought the pictures and illustrations were pretty good considering the difficulty of capturing certain Yoga poses. The good quality of the paper stock and clarity of the pictures get extra bonus points.
In addition, the book does have extensive comments on the meaning behind the Yoga poses. Some people may not be as interested in this kind of information, but for me knowing the names of the poses and some of the meaning behind them helps me to remember them better. So I enjoyed that extra research. For those who don't want that level of detail, there are a number of nice picture guides that simply show you the basic routines.
What I really like about this book is that it not only helps you get your feet wet as a beginner, it can take you up to intermediate and perhaps even advanced understanding of Yoga. The book is so full of good info that after you read it the first time, you can continue turning back to it for a long time to come. As a beginner, it's good for me to know that my investment in a book will become a nice reference when I'm done reading it.
I hope you enjoy this book. :)
