Amazing photography.......2007-09-22
Astonshing photographs of the mosquito in all stages of development will captivate readers. The images are colored to enhance the insect's physical featuress. Facts are interspersed with black and white photographs of children playing hide and seek at dusk, during mosquito prime hunting time.
I was sharing this book with some elementary aged kids and one boy commented that the insects looked like aliens.
This is a fascinating look at worlds too small to be seen with our own eyes.

Mosquitos: Ubiquitous blight of the earth.......2004-11-14
Mosquitos now inhabit most of the earth, including the Arctic. They may only live three weeks to five months, but the nasty little critters have been on earth since the dinosaurs and do not appear likely to go away soon. Ouch!
Mosquitos give credence to the argument that everything was put here to be eaten.
Did you know the female mosquito mate only once, but the male mates as often as he can? Enough of that...
We are cautioned that only a few of the 3,000 species bite humans, but that's plenty!
Lots of super clear color photography. Kudos to the photographers. Glossary and index.
A great high interest read and a welcome nonfiction addition to any school or public library.
Book Description
Best-selling author Gabe Suarez provides a graduate-level course in shooting with lightning speed and dead on target during the intensity of an actual gun battle. In Tactical Pistol Marksmanship, Suarez revisits some of the topics in the classic book The Tactical Pistol and presents even more gun-handling techniques, different twists on basic skills and unique tricks to help fine-tune how you aim and fire a gun under stress. Just some of the topics he covers are the primary requirements for the ideal service pistol according to combat vets; the rule of thumb for choosing a serious combat caliber; the 4 most important fundamentals of combat marksmanship; secrets to shooting in extremely low light situations when even tritium sights are of no use; the solutions to emergency failure-to-stop situations; and practical drills you can perform safely at home.

Excellent Book.......2007-08-15
I have read this book 3 times, as there is so much great information presented. Another book to underline key phrases.
Great Overview with Excellent Training Recommendations.......2006-12-18
Gabe Suarez covers a wide range of topics: Pistol Selection, Ammunition, Accessories, Loading, Unloading, Grip, Stance, etc... It's an excellent overview of combat shooting for those just beginning to learn and a great review for those with more advanced skills.
There are numerous illustrations, a list of resources and practice drills (both live fire and dry fire).
Overall a well written book that covers a lot of ground. Suarez advocates perfect practice and dry fire training. He says..."the more you shoot, the worse shot you will become." From a personal perspective, my skills began to increase significantly after I decreased my live fire practice sessions and focused more on dry fire at home. Although it took me a while to believe in the concept; perfect practice at a slow to moderate pace WILL make you smooth and that smoothness is what makes you fast (i.e. slow is smooth and smooth is fast).
Not What I Was Expecting.......2006-11-06
I was looking for a book to improve my shooting and I did not think this really helped. Full of anacdotes and little war stories. Not what I was after at all. My focus is on ISSF (or bullseye) shooting and this book is about police style use of firearms.
Excellent primer for pistol shooting.......2006-10-01
This book is an excellent primer for the person looking to be able to accurately fire a handgun very quickly. I purchased this book as a primer for the local concealed weapons license (CWL) course for my wife and benefited from it greatly as well.
The author explains stance, aiming and firing technique as well as a wealth of introductory information.
Some of the information is beyond basic (don't point your weapon at something you don't want to destroy) but is warranted considering the target audience of the book; his chapter on failure to stop was very good.
Hitting your target with a rifle at short range is very easy, however there is a great deal more technique required for a handgun and this book will go a long way towards getting you started.
I'd recommend getting professional instruction as well, the book could use better photos and they are black and white.
Our scores at 7-15 yards have increased 70% or so since we read the book, that's after 2 range trips.
Ideal Book for Beginners.......2006-01-21
I started to think of having a hand gun 5 weeks ago, after reading this book and starting practicing I could score 98% on a 7 yard target consistently only after 3 weeks. My wife read the book and could score 87% on her first time shooting. I gave the book to a friend and I am buying a second one.

Disciplined fundamentals produced advanced results........2006-05-01
As a retired police officer from the Washington DC area with over 23 yrs on the job, 15 of which were in SWAT and law enforcement special operations, I highly recommend this book to anyone in our field who wishes to become a better, safer, and more tactically aware operator. Beware of books and author's promising the latest, greatest, advanced tactics. I've never been impressed with a lot " How To " books that get generated by former persons in our line of work, but Erik Lawrence has put together a solid collection of proven tactics and techniques that will produce results. In my unit we used to study every possible way that we could constantly improve our skill sets. What we found is that only a disciplined application of fundamentals will give you the foundation necessary to expand and grow. That is what this book delivers. Mr. Lawrence, with his substantial background and operational knowledge appreciates the same demanding approach to sharp, crisp fundamentals. Additionally, I have trained with Erik and I can promise you that his qualifications as an instructor are among the best out there. Get the book. You won't be sorry.

Tactical Pistol Shooting 'Your Guide to Tactics that work'.......2006-01-24
What saves lives in a gun fight is doing the basics well. This is one of the best books out there for teach the basics. Excellent pictures and easy to understand discriptions makes this book great for all levels of marksman. If your getting into pistol shooting or want to learn how tactical teams shoot this is a must have.
Tactical Pistol Shooting.......2006-01-24
Erik Lawrence's 'Tactical Pistol Shooting' is sure to be an instant classic. At first glance, the reader will immediately grasp that the principles and techniques layed out by Lawrence are based upon real-world experience. It is the first, true, soup-to-nuts guide to tactical pistol shooting.
Top 3 of all books on tactical shooting.......2005-11-09
As a federal agent and a prior police officer, I loved this book. It is concise, well illustrated, and straight to the point. If you can only read one book, and you need to learn tactics and techniques that could save your life, this is it. This author puts out a good book, and I just wish I could train with him. The only negative, it should have been longer so that it would have more time to read. The people he list as reading and critiquing the book are real world players who have tested this stuff in combat, especially Tom Wilburn. Soldiers, police officers, and civilians will learn an effective way to protect their lives.

Customer Reviews:
Good book, better than the first, nice to add to a shooter's library.......2007-05-15
I would recommend this book for anyone interested in learning shooting from the ground up. Suarez takes a hard stance on technique and ideology in his first book, however the follow on series hits the mark.
Suarez appears to speak from experience, is definitely a focused shooter, and puts the reader in a frame of mind that is engineered towards combat effectiveness.
Some might find the intensity of attitude off putting but the knowledge provided far out weights the aformentioned intensity.
I would definitely recommend this book, along with several others as an addition to a shooters library.
This Book Rocks!.......2006-08-07
The author knows his stuff and presents it in a clear, logical manner. He's a regular cop, not some champion marksman that names all sorts of techniques after himself, like the "Suarez Squat Shot", like some other shooting authors do.
This is the one handgun book you must read........2005-07-01
This book should be required reading for anyone looking to use a handgun in a self defense manner. Whether you have your pistol in the bedside table drawer, or carry every day, if you intend to defend your life, and those of your family this book is a must read! Mr. Suarez knows his topic. The Tactical Rifle and The Tactical Shotgun should also be on your list.
book burning Nazi's.......2005-02-02
There are some good reviews here - perhaps enough to determine whether this book is for you. I just thought a few things could be clarified. To suggest that the only viable market for this book is someone belonging to a militia is to suggest that only the militia are interested in self-defense. It is perhaps desirable to point out that not everyone purchases a firearm to be enthused. Nor does this fact equate them with more dubious individuals or groups (for all my fellows follow the law). Furthermore, to assert that this book is not intended for citizens authenticates the ignorance (or motives) of the writer.
The author of this book does not advocate nor teach the indiscriminate killing of individuals. Conversely, he advocates the discriminate use of deadly force to prevent the loss of one's life. If the reader cannot determine the intended audience at introduction, he should perhaps be reading this book to fine tune his reading comprehension skills rather than skills as a marksman.
The author does not "pander to our primal fears" but illustrates the need for tactics introduced. The only disturbing viewpoints that I was able to find (outside of comments to ignore some such individuals as have commented on this book) were the ones that advocated your Bill of Rights and ideas about freedom (conveniently located at the rear of the book). - I love America!
For those looking to purchase this book, I will spell it out. This book is about actual combat, not sharp shooting or being enthused. If this is your first book and you do not have any formal basic training, do yourself a big favor and purchase that with this book (its for your benefit as much as anyone else's). Also, become familiar with your local handgun laws if you have not already (also suggested by this author and common sense). -peace
Packed with useful information.......2004-07-31
Please ignore the liberal whiners who have posted concerns about the information Mr. Suarez is offering in this book. This is a serious book dealing with lifesaving countermeasures to being seriously attacked by seriously dangerous criminals. If you are looking for a book covering the legality and moral considerations of a shoot/don't-shoot situation, Massad Ayoob has written several excellent books on the subject. This is not a book rehashing shooting fundamentals such as stance, sight alignment, and proper grip. I understand Mr. suarez has several other books covering those subjects. This is a book written for citizens and officers explaining how to minimize risks during building searches and clearing dwellings. It details how to conduct yourself tactically when the proverbial !@#$ has hit the fan. Most of the book is written for the individual going it alone, which is good. A lot of books on this subject focus on elite swat and navy seal team deployment, and lets be honest, if you are a navy seal, you've probably already been there and done this. There is an excellent chapter on team operation and communication, which works eqally well if the "team" consists of a husband and wife checking on the sound of breaking glass in the babie's room. Don't get me wrong, this book is written professionally and I am sure professionals could learn quite a few things from its reading. The information is well written and presented logically. the diagrams and pictures are easily followed and understood. Most importantly though the information mr. Suarez presents here is thorough, uncomplicated, straightforward and realistic. No space is wasted with the endless debates and doctrinal dissagreements that flesh out the bulk of other combat texts. No candy coating here either, just hard, real-world-tested facts. If you have already mastered the basics of small arms operations, this is the next step in becoming a viable defensive combatant.

Customer Reviews:
Its a waste of money!.......2003-04-30
To tell you the truth, I did'nt enjoy reading this book. If you really want to learn more about 1911's, go to the nearest gunsmith.
A Must-have for the to-be 1911 owner.......2003-01-27
I found the information shared extremely helpfull. Where was this book when I bought my first 1911? Had I access to this level of in-depth explaining and discussion of the options available I would have made some different decisions. The author obviously knows his stuff and speaks from first-hand experience. The only criticism I have is that the author only refers to work performed by US gunsmiths. It would have been great if the appendix could also have referenced some reputable smiths in other countries. I know this is probably unlikely to happen due to the logistics involved...
Excellent.......2002-08-01
If you own or like 1911's you should buy this book and the Gun Digest book of the 1911.
Tells you junk you already know........2002-04-14
This book isn't worth it. It tells you lots of nonsense about how to customize your 1911, but not much how to deploy it in a "tactical" sense. Lauck pushes expensive customization of Colt 1911's but doesn't even touch the newer (and much better) clones. (Kimber, Springfield, etc.).
excellent- absolutely recommended.......1999-11-17
i cannot reccomend this book enough, i have been shooting for almost 16 years, been a police officer for almost 5, consider myself pretty knowledgble about firearms. this book answered questions i didnt even know i had, or ideas as to why/why not on the 1911. dave lauck is also an excellent craftsman, a real gentleman with whom to deal, takes great pride in his work, and if you have ever read any reviews on any of his work in the gun mags, all come back 'superior'. also to his credit, there is not a sentence of pitching his work, it speaks for itself and his reputation is known among operators as an excellent craftsman
