Book Description
The environmental sciences are undergoing a revolution in the use of models and data. Facing ecological data sets of unprecedented size and complexity, environmental scientists are struggling to understand and exploit powerful new statistical tools for making sense of ecological processes.
In Models for Ecological Data, James Clark introduces ecologists to these modern methods in modeling and computation. Assuming only basic courses in calculus and statistics, the text introduces readers to basic maximum likelihood and then works up to more advanced topics in Bayesian modeling and computation. Clark covers both classical statistical approaches and powerful new computational tools and describes how complexity can motivate a shift from classical to Bayesian methods. Through an available lab manual, the book introduces readers to the practical work of data modeling and computation in the language R. Based on a successful course at Duke University and National Science Foundation-funded institutes on hierarchical modeling, Models for Ecological Data will enable ecologists and other environmental scientists to develop useful models that make sense of ecological data.
- Consistent treatment from classical to modern Bayes
- Underlying distribution theory to algorithm development
- Many examples and applications
- Does not assume statistical background
- Extensive supporting appendixes
- Accompanying lab manual in R
Book Description
Modeling the Environment is the first introductory textbook for a technique of rapidly growing importance. It requires little or no mathematical background, and is appropriate for undergraduate environmental students as well as professionals new to modelling. Developed from the author's own introductory course, it is classroom-tested and represents an important contribution to the field of system dynamics.
Modeling techniques that allow managers and researchers to see in advance the consequences of actions and policies are becoming increasingly important to environmental management. The models produced are vital analytical tools that aid the policy-setting and implementation process, and help us to understand how environmental systems respond to management interventions.
Modeling the Environment is a basic introduction to one of the most widely known and used modeling techniques, system dynamics. The book is designed to build the skills of students as they progress from learning fundamental ideas to constructing models of increasing complexity. Written in a clear and comprehensible style, the book:
- presents basic concepts of modeling using system dynamics
- illustrates the mechanics of model construction through a range of working models
- offers a rich array of exercises for students to use in applying the principles and techniques described in the text
- walks students through the design and application of models of specific types of environmental systems
.
In addition, the book contains more than 300 figures and model illustrations, and provides a guide to an interactive website where students can use the text to "navigate" management flight simulators ? models of both real and hypothetical systems developed by the author. The book also contains appendixes that help students review the necessary math, and which provide additional concepts and exercises for further study.

Great Book for Anyone.......2006-12-12
This is a great book for anyone who wants to gain a thorough understanding of Stella software. The book is easy to read, and the examples and case studies are well chosen.
Great interdisciplinary book on environmental modeling.......2000-05-24
A highly readable introduction to environmental modeling. What distinguishes the book from other environmental science and environmental modeling works is its interdisciplinary treatment. In particular, the models integrate the physical world and the world of human behavior. Far too many environmental models fail to close the feedbacks between human behavior and the state of the environment, instead taking waste inputs or resource use as exogenous. This book helps students learn to model human behavior (social and economic) as an integral part of the ecological system. The models and software mean the book encourages active learning, and enable students to explore important issues on their own if they choose.
Modeling the Environment.......2000-04-24
This book is easy to read and contains clear examples of how to use stella software to model the environment. The marvel here is the software, not the book. For the software timid, it might suppliment the software users guide.

Book Description
Increasingly used to represent climatic, biogeochemical, and ecological systems, computer modeling has become an important tool that should be in every environmental professional's toolbox. Environmental Modeling: A Practical Introduction is just what it purports to be, a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques, and skills required for computerized environmental modeling. Exploring the broad arena of environmental modeling, the book demonstrates how to represent an environmental problem in conceptual terms, formalize the conceptual model using mathematical expressions, convert the mathematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or laptop computer, and examine the results produced by the computational model. Equally important, the book imparts skills that allow you to develop, implement, and experiment with a range of computerized environmental models. The emphasis is on active engagement in the modeling process rather than on passive learning about a suite of well-established models. The author takes a practical approach throughout, one that does not get bogged down in the details of the underlying mathematics and that encourages learning through "hands on" experimentation. He provides a set of software tools and data sets that you can use to work through the various examples and exercises presented in each chapter, as well as presentational material and handouts for course tutors. Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book discusses how computational models can be used to represent environmental systems and illustrates how such models improve understanding of the ways in which environmental systems function.

Comprehensive and up-to-date, the book discusses how computational models can be used to represent environmental systems and illustrates how such models improve understanding of the ways in which environmental systems function.
The initial motivation to write this book stemmed from the perception of a growing divide between the increasingly sophisticated computer-based models that are being developed to represent various aspects of Earth's environmental systems (including those pertaining to its climate, ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles and hydrological processes) and the ability of many undergraduate students, and even some graduate students, of the environmental sciences to engage constructively with these models. The aim of this book, therefore, is to provide a practical introduction to the various methods, techniques and skills involved in computerized environmental modeling, including (i) representing an environmental problem in conceptual terms (i.e., devel¬oping a conceptual model), (ii) formalizing the conceptual model using mathemati¬cal expressions (i.e., formulating a mathematical model), (iii) converting the math¬ematical model into a program that can be run on a desktop or a laptop computer (i.e., implementing a computational model) and (iv) examining the results produced by the computational model (i.e., visualizing the output from a model and checking the model's validity in comparison with observations of the target system).

Book Description
Interest in the temporal fluctuations of biological populations can be traced to the dawn of civilization. How can mathematics be used to gain an understanding of population dynamics? This monograph introduces the theory of structured population dynamics and its applications, focusing on the asymptotic dynamics of deterministic models. This theory bridges the gap between the characteristics of individual organisms in a population and the dynamics of the total population as a whole. In this monograph, many applications that illustrate both the theory and a wide variety of biological issues are given, along with an interdisciplinary case study that illustrates the connection of models with the data and the experimental documentation of model predictions. The author also discusses the use of discrete and continuous models and presents a general modeling theory for structured population dynamics.

Book Description
Fluid Physics in Geology is aimed at geology students who are interested in understanding fluid behavior and motion in the context of a wide variety of geological problems, and who wish to pursue related work in fluid physics. The book provides an introductory treatment of the physical and dynamical behaviors of fluids by focusing first on how fluids behave in a general way, then looking more specifically at how they are involved in certain geological processes. The text is written so students may concentrate on the sections that are most relevant to their own needs. Helpful problems following each chapter illustrate applications of the material to realistic problems involving groundwater flows, magma dynamics, open-channel flows, and thermal convection. Fluid Physics in Geology is ideal for graduate courses in all areas of geology, including hydrology, geomorphology, sedimentology, and petrology.
Book Description
Modelling of marine ecosystems is a rapidly developing branch of interdisciplinary oceanographic research. Introduction to the Modelling of Marine Ecosystems is the first consistent and comprehensive introduction to the development of models of marine ecosystems. It begins with simple first steps of modelling and develops more and more complex models. This step-by-step approach to increasing the complexity of the models is intended to allow students of biological oceanography and interested scientists with only limited experience in mathematical modelling to explore the theoretical framework and familiarize oneself with the methods. The book describes how biological model components can be integrated into three dimensional circulation models and how such models can be used for 'numerical experiments'.
The book illustrates the mathematical aspects of modelling and gives application examples. The tutorial aspect of the book is supported by a set of MATLAB programs, which are provided on an accompanying CD-Rom and which can be used to reproduce many of the results presented in the book.

Customer Reviews:
Jimmy Ballard book review.......2007-01-22
I'm an older golfer (70+) and I found this the best golf swing instruction book I've ever read. The illustrations were of players I remember idolizing when I was a younger player, the concepts logically defined & metaphores easy to remember when practising, the drills constructive & productive. His use of concepts like "connections" and "swinging from the ground up" have stayed with me throughout the season. In some instances he told me things about the act of swinging the club that had never occurred to me before. In short he must have been a great teacher as my golf instructor told me when he recommended it.
The Bible.......2006-07-16
From taking up golf at age 10 until I was 18 I was a hacker - and I so desperately wanted to be good that practiced every day on the range. I took lessons from many local Club pros but never improved. My swing felt ungainly and awkward and I found golf so frustrating and depressing. Then by accident I bought Jimmy's first video - 'The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection'. Soon after I bought this book. I was completely amazed. He was telling me exactly the OPPOSITE of what I had always been taught by all these different pros, as well as many well meaning amateurs at my club. It was almost an evangelical experience. I felt as if a huge cloud had been lifted. I read and re-read his book and immediately began to practice, disgard all the classical 'sacred' swing rules I had ever learnt that had prevented me from making any natural, athletic moves and ignore all the teaching I had ever had. What a transformation. Within 12 months my handicap had reduced from 18 to 6 and then shortly after to 3. I was picked for my University first team for 3 straight years and won the vast majority of my matches. I hit the ball so consitently and straight whilst my opponents were in the trees/rough/undergrowth. Best of all, my golf swing FELT so perfect, natural, effortless, balanced and perectly repetitive. Everyone commented about it enviously. I had so many comments that my swing looked exactly like Curtis Strange. (He should have known better than to listen to any other teacher and fiddle with a perfect swing). Now several years later, my busy career has meant that I only played golf once last year. But I stood on the first tee having not hit a ball for many months and after I few practice swings, my swing felt perfect, natural and easy. Perfect contact and the ball went straight down the middle as if I had never been off the golf course. That is the proof that Jimmy Ballard is right and everyone else is wrong. Before if I didn't hit a ball for 2 days I just couldn't make contact.
What more can I say? This man has given me a perfect golf swing for a lifetime. He is God when it comes to golf. He may not be anywhere near as good at promoting himself and using the media as David Leadbeader (who stole a few of Jimmy's ideas when he came to prominence - and then added some flawed ideas of his own) but listen to no one else and read nothing else unless it's by Jimmy Ballard. This book is the Bible.
Possibly the best ever.......2002-11-06
In my humble opinion based on reading perhaps 1,000 books on golf over the past 40+ years, this may be the single best golf instructional book ever written. It's short, it's clear, it's well-illustrated, and it's an approach to instruction that WORKS. As I recall, Ballard was selected as the "teacher of the decade" for the 1980's by Golf Magazine, and with good reason. His fundamental principle of "connection" is, as he says, not merely the key to golf but to any number of sports. He has identified the fundamental principle that distinguishes the great ball-strikers from the hacks and also-rans. Regardless of what they may SAY they do, or FEEL they do, Ballard has identified what the great ball-strikers really DO. I recently took some lessons at the Kapalua Golf Academy and came home thinking "That sounds just like what Jimmy Ballard was saying 20 years ago." I picked up a copy of this book and confirmed that it indeed was what Ballard was saying 20 years ago. You may need some professional guidance to confirm that you are grasping what Ballard is saying, but I'm convinced that what he is saying is pretty much the one overriding key to the golf swing. I'm astounded that this book is out of print because it deserves to live alongside of Hogan's Five Lessons and a handful of other indisputable classics.
Try this drill.......2002-02-27
If you want to test Ballard's theories, try the drill on
page 60: "Another way to get a feel for [connection] is to
hit some medium or short irons with a handkerchief under
your left shoulder. If you drop the handkerchief, you've
unplugged, or disconnected, allowing the arms to work
independently of the body." You may have seen Vijay Singh
hit practice shots with a headcover under his left arm
and wonder what he was doing. That's what he's doing.
I've played 40 years, including college golf, and have a
single digit handicap. I am 5'8", small framed, under 150
lbs. Without the big muscle approach, I'm toast. His
common misconceptions alone will help you.
This title should be put back in production. It would
eliminate a lot of human suffering.
A Real Shame...........2001-11-30
It's a real shame that this book is out of print. This is the best book I've read on the golf swing. Applying concepts learned in just the first few chapters, I saw immediate improvement.

Customer Reviews:
motivating.......2007-05-19
I think is the best instructional book that I have read. It is easy to
follow and tells you what type of swing you have. I have been in the golf horrors for years my handicap ballooning until I finally quit 3 years ago. However I am still interested in golf hence my buying the book.I went to the practice range after reading it and hit some good shots, the first for a longtime after years of rubbish.Thank you Dr. Jim I will give the extra star when I am back on the course and playing a reasonable game.
This is a good book with a different approach........2007-03-22
Jim Suttie explaing different types of swings for different types of bodies. He also gives a test for you to see which type of swing you should try to use. What I really like is he also identifies the power source for each swing. This is a good book and will go well with an avid golfers collection.
Helpful.......2006-11-08
This must be good. I lent it to a friend and cannot get back. He swears by it and it is starting to already look a little ragged.
Another great golf instruction book.......2006-04-23
I highly recommend this book. One of the problems with golf instruction is that people are built differently with different strengths and weaknesses etc, and different physical structures. A one size fits all swing is not realistic. Mr Suittie understands this very well and explains how to find out where your natural power sources and swing mechanics should be. In my opinion this is one of the missing links in modern insruction. He also coauthured a similar work "The LAWS of the Golf Swing." If you want the best of recent golf instruction then get the following books: Your Perfect Swing, The Laws of the Golf Swing, The Plane Truth, Swing Like a Pro, The Only Golf Lesson You Will Ever Need and the 7 LAWS of the Golf Swing. Obviously you would not want to read this all at once but as a student of the game, these books will definietly help you become a better striker of a golf ball.
Excellent resource for finding YOUR swing.......2006-03-25
I purchased this book to help me learn more about teaching; which I hope to do one day. What really amazed me is what I learned about my own swing. I never quite understood that I was an upper body swinger and what compensations I was forced to make in order to strike the ball. This book clarified seveal of the lessons I have been taught over the years and opened my eyes to why I cannot swing the club like my lower body swinger friends. If you want to learn about the swing, your swing, then I highly recommend this book. This book is very well written and is easy to follow. Once you find out what kind of swinger you are, you will then be able to work on the included lessons that will maximize your practice.

Smith, the guru behind two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, offers a simple suggestion to get your swing on course: find your own. If it seems obvious, the sad truth is that it's obvious to all subsets of the human species other than golfers; golfers tend to want to ape the mechanics of whoever's on top of the leader board for the week. Smith preaches that you begin with an honest assessment of your own skills and ability. From there, his instructional tees up theory, drills, and exercises geared to getting you into what he calls the "ideal impact position"--the connection of club face to golf ball--so that regardless of whether you resemble the liquid Fred Couples or the spastic club hacker, you can at least strike the ball with confidence. Smith fills Swing with useful photos and understandable mechanics, and ends with an agreeable chapter on lessons he's learned through the years from others, including such pros as Janzen, Jack Nicklaus, David Duval, and Phil Mickelson; good teachers should always tip a tam to their own sources of inspiration. --Jeff Silverman

Customer Reviews:
Not that complicated.......2001-07-21
If you want complicated, try Gary Wiren or Homer Kelly. Smith focuses first on impact (a la Johnny Miller), the backswing, downswing and then the setup. The still photos were good - I would have liked to seen more. There's also a useful faults and fixes section. Smith isn't a method teacher and is mostly clear in his descriptions of the swing. I had to reread a couple of parts to understand what he was trying to say. Although alot of what he writes is covered in other texts, he does make alot of enlightening points I've never read about before. I'd recommend this book for someone who's already had a lesson or two or read Golf for Dummies and knocked the ball around a little. Ultimately, a lesson from a good teacher is always preferred.
very insightful instruction.......1999-07-07
The book has done a good job of dispelling certain myths about the golf swing. I read every golf book that comes along and think that this book is similiar to the book GOLF IS A WOMAN'S GAME. Both books address myths about the golf swing. A suggestion.. if you liked this book try GOLF IS A WOMAN'S GAME both books are a one two punch
FOR THE PERSON WHO LIKES TO HIT GOLF BALLS.......1999-02-02
For the past five or six years I have read the leading golf magazines and numerous books about golf. This is the best instructional material I have read. The concept of the full swing was easy for me to understand and I appreciated the way Rick Smith dispelled many of the myths we've associated with the golf swing.
This book is for the person, like me, who likes to hit golf balls. I know I have improved my swing and lifted my confidence level as a result of reading this book.
I'm reading it now for the third time.
Thank's Rick
Far to complicated for (any) the average golfer.......1999-01-22
I consider myself a student of the game and have read many thoughts on how to play your best golf. This book (while I am sure fundamentally sound) would take a physics background and a full time golf coach to implement the many ideas presented in this book. I would avoid this book unless you enjoy a good migraine headache.

Customer Reviews:
The golf swing for the science minded.......2007-01-26
While this book was written quite a few years ago, the basic science behind it is solid.
Using high speed cameras, the authors analyze every aspect of the golf swing dispelling many myths behind the swing. It looks at what makes up swing speed, how certain ball flight is achieved, and much more.
If you're a Dave Pelz fan, you'll love this book. I find Pelz and the authors here to be of similar mind and approach.
This book really isn't for teaching your golf swing, however. There really aren't any drills for you to do, but it explains what you want to achieve, just not HOW to do it.
The science behind this book personally help me drop from a 6 to a 4 index, and improve my driving accuracy from about 45% to 60%, IN ONE YEAR. The reason? My instructor was wrong in talking about ball flight and what causes the ball to do certain things. This caused me to try to adjust things in my swing that didn't need adjusting.
Physics of Golf Explained.......2005-11-30
This book tells you interesting facts like how much clubhead speed is needed to hit a golf ball 280 yards on a fly. It also shows lots of pictures on different golf swings from various golfers. The factors of spin and drag on a golf ball are explained.
Accordingly, the author talks about what the best angle on a drive is to get the best carry on a golf ball. It also has a section on analyzing tournament putting. I also suggest
Patrick Leonardi's
"The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer"
The information in this book was great in getting myself and my golf game in tip top shape.
I also liked Duncan Leonard's "Extreme Golf: The World's Most Unusual, Fantastic and Bizarre Courses"
Old and dated.......2005-04-03
This book has some good information but was in its prime in the 70's. Golf equipment and materials have changed so much in the last 10 years that the wooden drivers and crude cast irons in this book aren't too relevant to modern equipment. The theory discussed in the book is good but dated.
My Favorite Book.......2003-02-13
This is my favorite book of all time: a wonderful model of the golf swing that has not been surpassed since its original publication in the early 1970's. Think of all the enduring golf ideas that have followed from this book: the heel-sole weighted putter and club, the importance of the left side guiding the swing, the swing plane and curve of the golf ball, the importance of different shots, the kinetic chain for power, aim and stroke in putting, ... All current teaching and golf science started right here. It is silly to play golf without fully understanding this book.
lots of info , but you need a Phd to pu it to good use........2001-11-28
it was a dry read with many "big" words,. I think that with someone who understand it, it would be a great help.

Customer Reviews:
shows the best golf swings in the world, frame by frame.......2006-08-20
If you are a visual learner, and are looking to improve your full golf swing, then I believe this book is for you. The book contains a frame by frame pictorial (in 3 different views) of some of the best golfers in the world. I think the best way to make this book work for you is to find the professional with the swing that is most similar to yours, and compare your positions to theirs. This book was eye opening for me, and helped my game (mirroring Steve Elkington's pre-impact position probably cut me down from a 12 handicap to an 8).
Views of a good number of players.......2005-09-16
This is not a book of instruction: it is a book of swings, and analysis.
What makes this book so valuable is that, perhaps for the first time, people can look at many of the greatest players of all time and see how their swings differ (or are similar to) each other.
Where this book offers no great instruction, it gives the average person a look into the realm of swing analysis, that cryptic world beyond the comprehention of so many of us. It may also serve as a good teaching resource for golf instructors.
If any improvements are to be made, before and after shots of people who have undergone major swing changes, and a larger number of classic golfers (Demeret and Sarazen in particular) would be nice.
