Good basic book about geography.......2007-06-08
This book does provide a good basic introduction for kids. Just needs to have some pictures updated in it. My four-year-old twins will enjoy it.
Looking at Maps and Globes.......2004-08-06
Carmen Bredeson has written a very good introduction to maps and globes. Covers such topics as legends, directions, and scale. The writing and the book design are clear and clean. The illustrations and photographs are of good quality, but I wished there had been more photos taken specifically for this book as oppose to stock photos. There is an index. Book Description
A novel theoretical account of globalization, De-Coca-Colonization argues that we must move away from top-down visions of the processes at work and concentrate on how ordinary people who are locked out of power structures create "globalities" of their own. Taking us on a kaleidoscopic tour through the worlds of ordinary people and their deceptively prosaic commodities, the author demonstrates that the little-g globalization is where much of the action reconstituting global social life is happening.

Customer Reviews:
It's a good starting place!.......2007-10-07
My son and I used this book for History/Geography last year, for 2nd grade. It was a good starting place but I didn't use the book religiously, because it was a lot of the same thing (talk about the country, do a craft, do a maze, connect the dots, etc etc). This book did help to get me "thinking geographically" and I'm grateful for that. Other than that, what we used was a membership to enchantedlearning.com, a globe and wall-map, and our library cards. I didn't pick this book up much after the first month or so of school.
One thing I really didn't like is that the author moderates the Galloping the Globe Yahoo Group, and she will nix any emails you send to try to resale your book to anyone who might be looking for one, or any other books that would go well with the study. I found that strange and a little too greedy for my taste! Also, if someone comes along and sends an email wanting an honest opinion of the Galloping the Globe book before they buy it, and someone posts a review that might lean a little towards the negative, she will nix that, too.
Here is the way we studied the world:
1) The Continents and Oceans (which we reviewed every week thereafter)
2) Asia (my son is a China-freak, he loves it)
3) The Middle East
4) Africa
5) Europe
6) Australia
7) Antarctica
8) South America
9) North America (that way, we ended up "at home," sorta)
Some things we spent 4-8 weeks on, some things only 1-2 weeks, depending how high the interest level was. Generally what we did was locate the continent on the map, then dissect it and study a few of its countries. We would go to the library and get 4-6 books on the continent itself then whatever countries from that continent we wanted to study. We'd do some map work from enchantedlearning.com. Then we would make some sort of art project specific to the area. Hands on Crafts for Kids Around the World is a great book to use for ideas. We made some really great projects from this book (even though I had to tweak some to make them less complicated or expensive). dltk-kids.com also has some good craft ideas for different countries. I would get DVDs from Netflix appropriate to the country. These generally did a better job explaining the political/social/economic culture of the country than I could have! Sometimes, I would help my son write a couple of paragraphs about famous people from that country. It was a lot of fun! Enchantedlearning.com also has a one-page "Country Report" sheet, but we didn't use it because my son does not like to do the same thing over and over.
Happy learning!
Amusing activities, some inaccuracies.......2007-03-11
This book was a big disappointment. While the activities are somewhat amusing, none of them require the purchase of the textbook as coloring-pages, black-line maps, and worksheets can be found online rather easily.
More troubling were the cultural tidbits included in the text. Some are inaccurate, others just odd (why include an obscure tradition that is not widely known or celebrated by the majority of the country's inhabitants when there are far more widespread and important events that could be included?)
I am editing this to provide some examples since some have not found this review to be helpful:
The section on Italy p. 72
1) regarding dining: salad is not served alongside meat. Italians do not eat salad on the same plate as meat, nor is it the same course
2) "scoppio del carro" is translated "explosion of the car" Carro does not mean car and it has never meant car. A "carro" is a cart or wagon. This inaccuracy is more troubling than the sequence of courses in a typical Italian meal.
3) "Gelato is sold on city streets in specially made motorcycle carts". No. Most Gelato is sold in Gelaterie (singular gelateria), which are ice-cream parlors. Some bars (coffee bars) sell ice cream as well. While there are some motorcycle carts, there are far more traditional-style ice-cream trucks like we have here in the states.
These are examples of inaccuracies in one one-page section.
SPecific examples of activities:
1) in the section on Italy, there are star-shaped mazes (since Galileo was an important figure in the study of astronomy).
2) Flag to color
3) "find the twins". Students are supposed to select the identical moons from a group of 6.
I would definitely not recommend this book unless you have personal knowledge of the regions or care to perform extensive quality-control before presenting the information. It is less time consuming to buy a better book to begin with.

Book Description
People use concepts such as time and date to structure their lives on a daily basis. They often measure their travel by marking points arranged along great circles on the globe. Yet most do not understand the origin and history of these terms and the stories of the intrepid adventurers, scientists, and seafarers who shaped our picture of the world today. Ariel transports readers to faraway lands and ancient cultures that span more than 3500 years of exploration. Phoenicians, Spaniards, Portuguese, British, French, and many others star in an epic that stretches from Lapland to Cape Horn, via Greenwich, Paris, the Andes and the Fortunate Islands. This book is a collection of stories and myths about geography, navigation, and geodesy-- the science that deals with the Earth's figure and the interrelationship of selected points on its surface-that reaches far beyond dry scientific texts to concentrate on the people behind the discoveries. The knowledge and understanding of abstract notions such as the Prime Meridian, the Equator, and the International Date Line is conveyed through emphasis on the human spirit that motivated the pioneer scientists and sailors. It is a tale littered with heroes and villains, battles, tragedies and international intrigue. Readers will learn of a time when nothing was certain--even the shape and size of the earth were the subjects of fierce competition, conflict, and politics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellently written.......2006-07-11
It has a distinctive stamp of the author, Ariel all over it, giving it a very individual and personal style, quite different from so many books that give a lot of facts, but no more. The corroborative details about the persons historically involved add greatly to the interest and enjoyment. The facts are given as well and are given clearly. It deserves to sell well every where. Consider me a fan.
History, scence, & entertainment.......2006-05-02
This book is very informative, educational, and entertaining all at once. The style is akin to Asimov, clear enough for the layman, but of interest to professionals. The trials, travails, and intrigue of the many historical figures who helped create the globe as we know it are brought alive by this book.
Plotting the Globe.......2006-04-09
Easy to understand easy to acquire information for most readers, explaining quite a few subjects accepted as common knowledge without any idea of their origin.
Also very interesting and entertaining historical backrounds.
Apart from usual inquisitive reader, it should be specifcally reccomended to defence service cadets and officer training establishments

an agnostic after my own heart.......2004-11-05
A fascinating book about the author and his new wife "roughing it" on an island in the South Pacific. They lived in a hut that they made themselves, ate only what they picked from trees or killed, and had no contact with the outside world.
The most interesting part to me though, was the authors quest for God. He seemed to really want to believe, and while his scientific knowledge would not let him interpret the bible literally, he felt that nature was so beautiful and complex that is had to be created by a higher power.
past, present and future.......2001-01-06
I'd just like to second the comments from "a reader from USA" above. This book is so much more than is stated in the synopsis. While it begins as a very enjoyable adventure and exploration story, it takes the reader beyond the adventure to truths about the present and future that are insightful, important and stated in a way that is compelling to say the least.
I'd rate this book 10 stars if I could!.......2000-04-10
Simply one of the most heart-wrenching and haunting true adventure stories ever written. I was so moved after reading this wonderful book that I could hardly think of anything else for weeks. Nearing the end of this book, I was choking back tears, as Mr. Heyerdahl touches upon truths so profound that they are mind-boggling. He shows us the things that our society has tried so hard to forget. He powerfully reminds us why we should not ignore the trouble our planet is in. Thor Heyerdahl has to be one of the best people who has ever lived. Only a very, very, great man could write a book like this.

Book Description
Reflecting the dangerous pursuits of an adventure cameraman, this book offers a first-hand look at the extreme weather phenomena that the author has photographed. Events include the recent Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and last year's Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana. While the pictures present these natural disasters in vivid detail, the authoritative text includes information about volcanic eruptions, categories of storms, and the stories of people who have survived these climatic events.

A Mastery of English.......2003-05-02
This book surely has its ethnographic merits, but there's another great reason to read it. Gerard Brenan is one of the most elegantly simple writers in the English language. The economy of his prose that never feels hurried perfectly suits the man for his observations of the unhurried, simple life he describes.
A book of remarkable insight and information ........2002-02-21
As a British ExPat, living in rural Andalucia, I find Brenan's observations of the Spanish character and way of life still very relevant and curiously haunting in this, the first decade of the third millenium.
The Historical movements of ancient peoples from Andalucia to Northern Europe, and their relevance to modern racial makeup, prove also fascinating.
Altogether; a somewhat 'dry' book, but well worth reading especially if you have an interest, and some knowlege, of Southern Spain.
Excellent Look at an Facinating People.......2000-05-02
I bought this book in preparation for a trip to Andalucia this summer. What I found was one of the best character studies I have ever read. This would be the father of the "Year in Provence" type of book set in a facinating section of Southern Spain amid white-washed Berber homes and olive groves. Don't worry about the chapters on the visits from various famous writers (Virginia Wolfe, etc.) as they can be skipped without dimishing from the work at all. Nonetheless, I enjoyed them despite having absolutely no interest in Lytton-Strachy, et al.
Life in Las Alpujarras.......2000-03-29
At once a travel memoir, a work of anthropological observation, and an account of becoming a writer, Brennan's account of life in a Spanish Village in the 1920's is acutely observed. Rich in its account of the culture of the region, South from Granada also contains wry descriptions of the visits of various members of the Bloomsbury group (Lytton Strachey, Dora Carrington, Leonard and Virgina Woolfe) who, with varying degrees of adaptability, are confronted with the rather basic ammenities of the village. Strong, clear writing makes for an evocative read.
An anecdotal remembrance of life in a Andalusian village.......1999-02-25
This work is more an anecdotal remembrance than a seamless flowing memoir. I wouldn't recommend this book as a first book about Spain, but I do think it is valuable for its knowledge about small Andalusia pueblo life in the twenties. In this it is very well written. The author is at his best describing the life, social mores and incredible natural panorama of the Sierra Nevada. I found the chapters dealing with his various visitors (English intellectual figures) uninteresting. I'll speculate that when it was published in the 50's that this was probably of more interest- now, with the exception of Virginia Woolf, these individuals are dimly remembered personages.

Book Description
Over a decade ago, an initiative emerged to link the fragmented wildlands and protected areas of Mesoamerica, the region including southern Mexico and Central America, through corridors of natural and restored habitats, so the rich flora and fauna could disperse and migrate between North and South America. In 1997, the region's Heads of State signed a Resolution to establish the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor (MBC). International agencies, private foundations, and conservation groups have committed several hundred million dollars to build the MBC, however, progress has been slowed by a lack of analysis and policy options for MBC implementation. Defining Common Ground for the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is the first in a series of Notes intended to catalyze actions necessary to plan and implement the MBC. This publication introduces the MBC Initiative, examines its implications for major stakeholder groups, and identifies some of the most pressing challenges that must be addressed if the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor is to be translated into a widely supported and effectively implemented program of action. It is hoped that this Note, and those that follow, will help readers articulate their own expectations of the economic, social, and environmental outcomes they desire from the MBC, and further bring those targets to fruition.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2004-08-04
A concise, well-researched study of one of the most fascinating new paradigms for social change and conservation: the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. A must-read for anyone interested in new trends in conservation, and in hope for our planet.
