Highly recommended!.......2005-07-11
This is a very nice book when we marine biologists need a refresher, or as a starting guide to those who wish to become one! I'm a big fan of the 'Chapter Overviews' at the end of each section.
Not sure why it's nearly $100.00 for a paperback book, though. 0.o
Book Description
This popular undergraduate textbook offers students a firm grounding in the fundamentals of biological oceanography. As well as a clear and accessible text, learning is enhanced with numerous illustrations including a colour section, thorough chapter summaries, and questions with answers and comments at the back of the book.
The comprehensive coverage of this book encompasses the properties of seawater which affect life in the ocean, classification of marine environments and organisms, phytoplankton and zooplankton, marine food webs, larger marine animals (marine mammals, seabirds and fish), life on the seafloor, and the way in which humans affect marine ecosystems.
The second edition has been thoroughly updated, including much data available for the first time in a book at this level. There is also a new chapter on human impacts - from harvesting vast amounts of fish, pollution, and deliberately or accidentally transferring marine organisms to new environments.
This book complements the Open University Oceanography Series, also published by Butterworth-Heinemann, and is a set text for the Open University third level course, S330.
A leading undergraduate text
New chapter on human impacts - a highly topical subject
Expanded colour plate section

understandable as an ecosystem.......2006-06-27
The authors provide more than just a superficial descriptive tour of the oceans. The text delves into studying the ocean as an ecosystem or subsets of it, as ecosystems in their own right. The food chain provides one way of understanding an ecosystem, and the adaptations that various creatures have for the niches they occupy. Here, the authors start from first principles, with the photosynthetic species and the depths which they occupy.
The book also shows that at the ocean bottoms, even with no photosynthesis, there is still a rich environment for benthic species.
The diagrams are well done and readily understandable. The biochemistry is pretty simple, but this is just an introductory text.

Book Description
This established textbook continues to provide a comprehensive and stimulating introduction to marine ecological concepts and processes. Based on a wealth of international teaching expertise, An Introduction to Marine Ecology is written as a basis for an entire undergraduate course in marine biology or ecology. It covers the trophic, environmental and competitive interactions of marine organisms and the effects of these on the productivity, dynamics and structure of marine systems. The strength of the book likes in its discussion of core topics which, despite an increasing emphasis on more applied aspects, remains at the heart of the majority of courses in the subject. The authors maintain the tradition of clarity and conciseness set by previous editions, and the text is extensively illustrated with colour plates, photographs and diagrams. Examples are drawn from all over the world. In this edition, the scientific content of the text has been fully revised and updated. An emphasis has been placed on human impacts and completely new chapters have been added on fisheries, marine ecosystems, and human interference and conservation.

PHENOMENALLY ORGANIZED & WELL PRESENTED, AN INTRODUCTION MASTERWORK.......2006-04-09
I bought this book about 4 or 5 years ago for a one-semester marine biology introductory course. It most definitely should be the book that introduces your typical biology student to the wonders of the marine environment. This is one of those books that as a student, you open up and page through before classes even begin, and it is one of those books that you won't want to sell back when the semester is over.
The information is understandable, well presented, well documented, and further explained by beautiful photographs, comprehensive charts, and accurate diagrams.
As a person who had only been to the actual ocean once before opening George Karleskint's Introduction To Marine Biology, I will gladly tell you that it is THE BOOK responsible for opening wide to me the wonders of the seemingly infinite marine environment. It is the reason why I feel comfortable with further study, and it is why I am still fascinated to this day with grasping the relationships we share with the Marine Environment. I have since studying this book, found myself evermore interested in undertaking a deep call to understanding and appreciating the beauty and sheer magnitude in variety of oceanic creatures. George Karleskint's "Introduction to Marine Biology" is a strong foundation from which to begin such an endeavor, from the huge and awe inspiring living Elkhorn coral, to the tiniest of unicellular marine organisms responsible for depositing the limited fuel that currently keeps economies of the world pumping, this book opens the mind wide and deposits a vast treasure trove of marine information.
For all of you students out there: good luck finding a used copy of this book, but what ever amount it is selling for now, it is truly worth the money. You can't put a financial value on the information you'll learn from this book.
"Introduction to Marine Biology" is a must have for marine biology instructors of all kinds, from the classrooms of Missouri, to the curious beachcomber living on a coastal seashore, and even the outdoor learning centers at a intertidal region near you.
Much better then these reviews suggest!.......2004-02-14
I've used this book with honors bio students - yes, some material needs additional clarification through lecture/labs - but the great joy of this text is the readability. Students enjoy reading this text - and as noted, the photography/printing is gorgeous. Piquing student interest motivates them to delve deeper into the material presented. Check it out!
The book is pretty good.......2002-02-14
I got the book for one of my classes and it seems to be pretty good so far. I am really pleased with the shipping. I received the book within three days. I am satisfied with the book and I am glad that I got the book at a price lower than the book stores price at my school.
Good intro for beginning students.......2002-01-17
This book is one of the better books out there for beginning students who are just learning about the ocean enviornment. There are inaccuracies (just like all books), yet where it makes it up is in the non technical jargon and easy reading. The graphics and pictures are easy to understand and well placed. I reviewed several books before choosing this one, don't let the other reviews hinder you, it is a solid book.
WEAK.......2001-12-07
This book is just weak. No substance and mediocre science. Great pictures, though. If that's what you are looking for, buy it. The book simply surveys or brushes over about every facet of "Marine Biology" on the ecological, evolutionary and organismal level. The book is nothing more than a basic/general introduction to the second broadest subject in biology, second to "General Biology". The only thing that separates it from a Gen. Bio book is its concentration on marine organisms and ecology, which isn't especially enlightening or unique.

Book Description
After the first edition, published in 1982, established itself as the main introductory textbook on marine parasitology, this edition has been reviewed to take account of recent advances. Now there is an additional chapter on the structure of marine parasite communities as well as new sections on pollution, translocations of hosts and parasites and on the effects of parasites on the aquaculture of marine fish molluscs and crustacea. The chapters covering ecological, zoogeographical and economic aspects have also been significantly changed. Aimed particularly at students and research workers in parasitology, the book will also be of interest to ecologists, biologists concerned with zoogeographical problems, and to fish and fisheries biologists.

Mother Ocean in Art & Science.......2006-06-10
I have been honored to use this book for the past year in my high-school Marine Biology class. It has a satisfying blend of science and art rarely seen in a textbook. There are incredibly beautiful pictures that become resource tools of their own, and exerpts and poems from selected works of literature introducing each chapter, allowing the student to contemplate Mother Ocean with new parts of her brain.
In retrospect, I would wish for more in-depth analysis of various aspects of the ocean and marine life. But the book is supplemented with factual questions throughout all chapters, asking the student to integrate his knowledge from various places, such as "How does a Beluga survive in frigid temperatures?" or "Explain how symbiosis and aggresive mimicry relate in cleaner wrasse." These questions require closely reading the text but also looking for answers outside the text that a student has learned in personal research or within the classroom. Again, it would be helpful to have an answer key for the teacher here, as Hill assumes a vast intimate knowledge of *all* aspects of marine life.
I also appreciated a heavy environmental theme, on what is going wrong with the oceans and how to preserve them. There are thought provoking questions, such as "Do you think whaling should begin again? Defend your answer." or "Do you agree with the decision to withdraw from the Kyoto Accords?" These questions can easily lead to great class discussions and short essay assignments.
A good all-around supplementary resource to the high-school Marine Biology classroom.

Equally great for tidepooling or casual reading.......2006-12-29
This book remains a classic reference for identification of tidepool organisms in southern California. Unlike many field guides, this one devotes 30 or more pages to basic oceanography (tides, currents, waves, water chemistry, etc) as it affects tidepool organisms. Other field guides include a greater number of color photos and line drawings but Hinton gives more help on identifying organisms and more explanation of their behaviors and ecological roles. He also includes a number of very entertaining anecdotes which make this book fun to read when the weather and tide aren't right for tidepooling.

Piet van Wyk : Field Guide to Trees of Kruger National Park.......2004-08-19
This is a fabulous book. Very well & clearly illustrated. It includes trees from the surrounding countries of Zimbabwe, Namibia & Botswana. Very easy to use as a reference book in the field, or when you want to identify a tree at home. It gives the Latin name, as well as the English & Afrikaans one & often the African name for each tree. Equally useful for an expert, or a novice in the field of trees. Lovely man - having met the author - & would strongly recommend buying this book if you are interested in trees of the Kruger region.
