    Book Description

This book describes an approach to intelligent task planning in a robotic system. Petri net and fuzzy logic are integrated and used to represent task sequence planning and error recovery. During the generation and execution of task plans, different kinds of uncertainties need to be handled to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the system. Following a systematic modeling procedure, a fuzzy Petri net is constructed based on geometric relations, fuzzy variables, and reasoning structures. The resulting net can be used to analyze and control the system. Many examples are discussed to illustrate the theory and the applications of fuzzy Petri nets.

        Book Description

This new edition provides a comprehensive introduction to fuzzy logic, and leads the reader through the complete process of designing, constructing, implementing, verifying and maintaining a platform-independent fuzzy system model. The book has been extensively revised to bring the subject up-to-date, and features two new chapters: "Building and Using Fuzzy Cognitive Map Models" and "Building ME-OWA Models."

The multiplatform CD-ROM contains all the C++ source code from the book's examples – but its real value is the robust package of fuzzy system related tools and utilities, featuring two notable components. First: Metus Systems' basic fuzzy modeling software, which includes complete C/C++ source code for creating and executing fuzzy models, a Visual Basic shell that can be used to create fuzzy sets and generate the C/C++ include files, and code for models for pricing, project management, risk assessment, and more. Second: The ME-OWA (Minimum-Entropy, Ordered Weighted Aggregation) decision modeling software from Fuzzy Logic, Inc. This software is used to focus on a single objective function from a set of alternatives given a fuzzy ranking among various alternatives. It is not only an important technique as a stand-alone tool, but is an important methodology in parameter selection (and parameterization ordering) for genetic algorithms and various data mining techniques. It is also an important technique used to establish rule and policy level peer weights in fuzzy models.

        Key Features
        * Tutorial style, requiring no background in fuzzy logic
        * Case studies illustrate real-world fuzzy applications
        * Mathematically straightforward exposition, with emphasis on practical use
        * CD-ROM features all the C++ source code from the book and a robust package of fuzzy system related tools and utilities

        1 out of 5 stars Not a practicle book.......2007-05-18

By chapter 3 I realized Dr. Cox completely fails to document the assumptions and reasoning behind the formulas he illustrates. He fails to even clearly list formulas in the book. He provides mini C-code programs that will quickly become dated and the book totally useless that you can spend time picking through to eventually derive formulas, assuming they are even correct at this point in time. Do yourself a favor, check it out from the library and take a look at it first. Don't get stuck like I did with an overpriced paperweight. A "first course in fuzzy logic" by Hung Nguyen may be better. I looked through random pages and at least it has the formulas, how and why they are developed. I'm going to check it out of the library first. Ours did not carry Dr. Cox's book so I could not look at it before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Good hands on fuzzy logic book.......2001-06-14

This is the best hands on fuzzy logic book that I have used thus far. I succesfully used the first edition of the book as reference to develop real world fuzzy applications. I see that some reviewers are somewhat upset about the source code shipping with the book. It is a pity that the C++ code, is so difficult to get going with, because this detracts from some very valuable chapters in the book itself. However, Mr Cox was very helpful in providing me with updated code. I highly recommend the book.

2 out of 5 stars good general introduction - code useless.......2001-05-15

I am about halfway through the book and in general it's a decent guide to fuzzy logic. Earl explains the concepts well and provides decent real work examples. The code, as everyone else here has already said, is basically worthless. The book would be far more valuable if he just removed the code entirely from it and focused more on fuzzy logic. Another complaint: reading the first 50 pages made me feel as if I were reading a religious text, not a fuzzy systems book. Earl spends a great deal of time convincing the reader that Fuzzy Logic easily beats out other competing expert systems such as Bayes logic and neural networks. He dismisses those who do not agree with him as "uneducated" and spends time hurling personal insults at them rather than focusing on the benefits of fuzzy logic. I almost put the book down and returned it when reading the first 2 chapters. Altogether this is a decent introduction to fuzzy logic if you disregard the useless code and pedantics of the author.

3 out of 5 stars Ok book - sourcecode is completely useless.......2001-05-04

If you want a book that gives basic explanation of fuzzy logic - this one is not that bad. If you want this book because it comes with 'free' code - look elsewhere. I'm a programmer with 10 years of C++ experience but I have not seen worse code than is supplied with this book. And believe me, I've seen a lot of bad code - I even wrote some of it :).

4 out of 5 stars Good Entry level Fuzzy Systems text, messy code.......2000-10-24

I'm pretty comfortable with C++, so I found fixing the couple of bugs in the shipped code to be not a problem. (Quit your whining its nearly free code.) I can't vouch for the Hisss VB interface, but then I'd drive a cab before I coded with VB. There is one serious bug but its from a typo. Email me and I'll send you the patch.

On to the good part. This is the first good Fuzzy Logic book I found. I've read several others before I got to this one and each one left me more confused than the rest. Earl finnally explained what its all about and what sort of problems this technique solves. There is a bit of "Fuzzy Logic is better than Neural Nets" but no real concrete examples to prove it. I ignored that and used his examples to learn how to do this and his code in some game AI. It worked well.

Also in case you don't know the thing that Fuzzy logic does well is smooth out transistions, ie it keeps things from oscillating between two single states. It's also good for when you have multiple inputs all of which contribute to deciding whether a threshold has been reached. You set weights to the inputs contribution and analyize the result, meets the threshold or not. You can also adjust the threshold depending on the state of the object. Coupled with a Finite State machine and you've got a basic game AI.

I have also taken some time (about a week) and cleaned the code up. It wasn't too difficult and I now have an OOP interface to it which made things a lot easier to understand. Earl obviously has a for sale system using the original code. He must have cut a chunk out and put it on the disk. I also have about a dozen emails from him, and I've sent him the updates. He's a busy guy, bug him to put the fixed code on his site. Maybe he'll get around to it.

            Book Description

In this book, efficient and scalable coevolutionary algorithms for distributed, network-based decision-making, which utilize objective functions are developed in a networked environment where internode communications are a primary factor in system performance.

A theoretical foundation for this class of coevolutionary algorithms is introduced using techniques from stochastic process theory and mathematical analysis.

A case study in distributed, network-based decision-making presents an implementation and detailed evaluation of the coevolutionary decision-making framework that incorporates distributed evolutionary agents and mobile agents.

The methodology discussed in this book can have a fundamental impact on the principles and practice of engineering in the distributed, network-based environment that is emerging within and among corporate enterprise systems. In addition, the conceptual framework of the approach to distributed decision systems described may have much wider implications for network-based systems and applications.

4 out of 5 stars Poor code but good research material.......2001-04-06

I agree with the reviews about the code problems but if you go to the website of this book you can get corrected code, samples and errors found. You cannot find a bunch of books in this field of object oriented artificial intelligence so I considered to be a unique. Of course a WIP but a valid foundation, it works.

            1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......1999-12-07

This was the main text whilst studying AI for my final year, and the instructors had a damn near riot on their hands from myself and my fellow undergrads. Even the seminar leaders were remarking on how 'Damn awful, horribly messy, downright nasty' the code was. This book conveyed precious little useful information in the main. I think my university will very soon find another text for AI in c++, or go back to teaching lisp.

I'm sure the authors are good at AI, but one thing they aren't good at is writing books. Stick to what you know, guys.

One previous reviewer commented he would to award minus stars - can I make a request for minus to infinity? Yes, it is THAT poor.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting attempt on the theme ( OOP IS REAL AI)........1999-11-20

For Instructors for course in AI: I have tried to use it as main referrence for a master level course in AI. It can only be a support book. It gives a lot of interesting exercises; an overview of all the topics. In important contexts it is too sketchy; But the metaphor ` OOP IS REAL AI' is a questionable position. It is not established in the book. For Instructors for course in OOP: I used the book for defining a group projects for an undergraduate course. Majority of students picked interest in their respective AI themes. Two groups reported that the downloaded code could be run with some small modifications. Other gruops had trobule in making the code run. The exercises defined in the chapters gave easy motivational contexts for the students. Some observations: The chapter 6 on Logic should have been more comprehensive to discuss the theorem prover ( which presented in sec 9.6). In OOP point of view, the chapter on Knowledge Representation was ideal, it worked for the group which worked Semantic Networks. The key need is that the auther should have explained better about the way the code is constructed in the chapter on heuristic search. It will be interesting if the authors show how the case study Interactive Intelligent Kitchen helper as discussed by Timothy Budd is implemented in the framework developed by Kim Tracy and P.Bouthoorn.

4 out of 5 stars Readable, comprehensive and intuitive.......1999-10-02

The book is intuitive for researchers. The content is coherently organised.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written code wastes pages.......1999-09-10

The authors didn't take the time to learn proper C++ programming before writing this book. There are lots of mistakes (even taking into account the time when this was written, there was no ANSI C++ standard...it is still bad C++ code). The book does a very poor job of describing how to use the object constructs to program agents. The examples are also very poorly designed. Many of the questions ask you to implement algorithm in language X, then in language Y. A book devoted to one language (as specified in the title) should solidly focus on the implementation of that language for the topic. I would give this book negative stars, but amazon doesn't allow that...yet.

Save your money. There are better AI books.

From the author: TEXTAL is a computer program that automatically-interprets electron density maps to determine the atomic structures of proteins through X-ray crystallography. Electron density maps are traditionally interpreted by visually fitting atoms into density patterns. This manual process can be time-consuming and error prone, even for expert crystallographers. Noise in the data and limited resolution make map interpretation challenging. To automate the process, TEXTAL employs a variety of AI and pattern-recognition techniques that emulate the decision-making processes of domain experts. In this article, we discuss the various ways AI technology is used in TEXTAL, including neural networks, case-based reasoning, nearest neighbor learning and linear discriminant analysis. The AI and pattern-recognition approaches have proven to be effective for building protein models even with medium resolution data. TEXTAL is a successfully deployed application; it is being used in more than 100 crystallography labs from 20 countries.
