Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Now this is a good textbook.......2003-09-01

This was a simply stated book that gave common sense examples.

The chapters were easy to understand without having to have your professor explain everything.

There are a couple of chapters that seem like they should be reorganized, and a couple of chapters that should be put in a different order. Overall though, this is a very good book to help you understand Human Resource Management.

3 out of 5 stars Creative multimedia tie-ins, but getting dated?.......2001-02-23

I suspect that a new edition will be out shortly. Some of the Internet links sprinkled throughout this book are broken, and the text frequently refers to conditions as they were, "as of mid-1997." Hopefully, the authors will employ a proofreader/style editor, as the sytnax is awkward in a few places. That said, this is a good introductory book. The creative integration of Internet links and video case studies ("On Location at Showtime," and ABC News reports on business trends and issues) add to the value of the text. An Internet site allows instructors to develop an on-line syllabus for students to view and download. Key terms are set on the margins in blue print, repeating their definitions from the text. Summaries at the end of each chapter do the same, and include questions designed to verify reader knowledge of major concepts. The book dwells at length on diversity issues, which is appropriate, given the plethora of Exceutive Orders, Supreme Court decisions, and legislation mandating various EEO/affirmative action practices in the HR field. The chapters on recruitment, selection, and training are the strongest in the book, and cover the topics in a fair amount of depth. The chapter on labor unions reveals a pro-union bias; otherwise, the book is ideology-free. Overall, this is a more than adequate treatment of the subject, and is quite serviceable.

          Product Description

This book/CD set features 25 twangy intermediate-to-advanced solos in the classic honky tonk style. If you love the sound of a twangy Telecaster guitar, you will enjoy learning the solos in this book. It is the best classic country solos book available! This is an intermediate to advanced book for players having basic skills. However, a brave and ambitious beginner might be able to tackle the slower solos. The solos contain many great LICKS and IDEAS that can be used by a creative onstage country guitarist. All solos are written in TAB and standard notation, and recorded on the companion CD. Few styles of music have enjoyed the widespread and enduring popularity of country music. Through the years, country music has developed from the rural Southern string band sound to the raw honky-tonk of the postwar period, the Nashville pop sounds of the late 50s and 60s, and finally the overly slick commercial sound of today. The solos in this book sound like the breaks one might hear on classic recordings by Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Lefty Frizell, George Jones, and similar artists who defined the exciting honky-tonk sound of the 50s to late 60sbefore rampant commercialism eliminated virtually all originality and feeling from popular country guitar solos. Several hundred popular country recordings were researched to come up with the 25 chord progressions in this book. Each progression was found to be common to several popular songs. A solo incorporating various concepts and techniques was composed to each progression. The result is an authentic sounding collection of country guitar solos through which various ideas can be analyzed.

            Book Description

Prolific, mercurial, thought-provoking, charming, engaging, dynamic, confusing--just like the artist himself, Andy Warhol's films explore the gamut of human emotion. From the time he obtained his first film camera in 1963, up until his death in 1987, Warhol explored and created moving images ranging from epic films, to personal portraits, to programs for cable television, to music videos. In fact, in a mere five years (1963-1968) he produced nearly 650 films including hundreds of silent screen tests--portrait films--and dozens of full-length movies, in styles ranging from minimalist avant-garde to commercial "sexploitation." His films and videos capture the rich and raw texture of the fertile cultural milieu in which he lived and worked, and are crucial to the understanding of Warhol's work in other media. Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures focuses on the artist's screen tests and non-narrative films from 1963-73. Within it we see sequences of his "most beautiful women"--screen tests featuring "Baby" Jane Holzer, Ivy Nicholson, Edie Sedgwick--and other works that showcase a parade of friends, actors, and models--Dennis Hopper, Gerhard Malanga, and Walter Burn to name just a few. This collection of tests is followed by the artist's non-narrative films including Eat, Sleep, Kiss, and Blow Job. All of the artist's film works are enhanced by texts from Mary Lea Bandy, Klaus Biesenbach, and others. The worlds of art, photography, film, criticism, lifestyle, and fashion unite in Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures, as 200 fascinating, full-bleed, remarkably clear, black and white stills provide access into territories both familiar and unexplored.

5 out of 5 stars Visions of superstars dance in my head.......2005-12-28

A few short essays. The same stills over and over.

But the essays are superb. Klaus Biesenbach sums the scene up, brings it to life, in just 4 pages.

The stills have become captivating in a month of viewing. Two hundred pages of them, effective black-and-white. How hard to stay still for 3 minutes. What's more erotic than Jane Holzer brushing her teeth?

The magic of Warhol is expertly conveyed. Here probably more than in the "Pop Box", the "Time Capsule 21", even the "365 Takes".

I haven't seen a Warhol film (or screen test) yet but this is the book that makes me want to. Do you have to be a Warhol fan already? Until you've seen something like this of the movies, you may not have actually been a Warhol fan. Hearing about the movies isn't enough. The silkscreens tend to be cold but there's lots of heat in these shots. In just these minimalist stills from minimallist movies, so much shows. It may be the closest I've come to experiencing Warhol.

It reflects the rapidly changing questions being asked in school library media research, as well as the methods of addressing those questions. It's a complete cookbook with rare pictures and words of
Elvis. I love it some much. In this way we know what kind of food Elvis liked. The friends that he had and a lot of things.

5 out of 5 stars Eat like Elvis!.......2001-12-22

It's probably not the best idea to eat like Elvis all the time, but nothing beats his recipes for peanut butter and banana
sandwiches or fried okra. Elvis sure loved his fried foods. Learn how to make Southern cuisine and mouth-watering desserts fit
for dinner at your own Graceland, but don't over do it. After all, Elvis didn't end up a skinny-minny from eating all that fried
chicken cooked in pancake batter. (...)

My mother in law is an Elvis fanatic, so I thought this would be cute to add to her Elvis things. Since recipes come from his cook and plenty of pictures alot have never seen. She actually uses the recipes too. She loves it.

                Book Description

Diehard fanatics will enjoy this comprehensive collection of groundbreaking baseball strategies, analyses, statistics, and studiesBaseball fans all across America will delight in this fascinating analysis of strategies and statistics. This unique approach to understanding the "tried and true" methodologies of the game of baseball examines conventional elements like the steal, hit and run, and line up construction. The Book on the Book offers an exciting critique of baseball by placing an actual dollar value on player performance and rating managers based on their on-field moves to determine who are the smartest tacticians. No corner of the ballpark is left unturned as author Bill Felber explores the various methods of team-building, on-field values of players, the role and influence of the general manager in team success, and the importance of park effects. In a more controversial section, new tactical approaches to the use of the pitching staff contradict the more generally accepted practices. In the vein of the late Leonard Koppett and Bill James, Felber uses mathematical and statistical principles to evaluate the wisdom of standard baseball strategies. Illustrations and a refreshingly engaging style make The Book on the Book the new textbook of baseball analysis.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with the other reviewers.......2007-02-20

I first looked at the reviews of this book after I'd already ordered it. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews first; their uniformly negative ratings might have put me off getting the book. I disagree strongly with these evaluations.

The book didn't seem that tedious to me; perhaps the reviewers were looking for something different from what the author was trying to do. The author is trying to present his conclusions on baseball strategy, not just as it needs to be used by players, but also by managers and by front-office people who might decide who should be signed and how much they should be paid. This latter part hasn't been addressed by anyone else that I know.

Some of his conclusions on on-the-field strategy may be identical to conclusions already reached by such baseball analysts as Pete Palmer. This doesn't make it less valuable that he enunciate them and give his reasoning. And some of his conclusions are new, or contrary to what other analysts have decided. That's why you want to read other books, not just this one, and come to your own conclusions.

One of the other reviewers seems to think everything Felber states is obvious. I think that some things are -- it is certainly more likely that you will strike out if you already have two strikes against you than if the count is 2-1. But what Felber is trying to do is quantify the chances, so that one can come up with a strategy for swinging/taking, and the very fact that his conclusions run counter than the usual strategies certainly means that managers don't think his conclusions are obvious.

My take on this book is that it is a valuable addition to my library, unlike the other reviews' ratings, though I certainly would not use this as my only book on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars If this is a landmark, then I'm very lost.......2006-04-02

This book presents a lot of information in an uninteresting way and doesn't break any new ground.

One of the first chapters by Felber states that the best hitters hit early in the count as once hitters have worked themselves into 2-strike counts, their batting averages drop sharply.

Of course they do. That's because with 2 strikes, you can strike out on the next pitch. With 0 or 1 strike, a batter can do a lot of things with the next pitch, but one of them isn't striking out. And striking out is the end result of a lot of at bats.

The chapter on bullpen usage makes some sense, but the examples given are presented poorly.

2 out of 5 stars Just too tedious.......2006-03-31

While I was reading this book I brought it into work one day and a co-worker (an avid Mets fan) asked me what the book was about. I explained it breaks down baseball strategies and ideologies. He said it sounded kind of tedious. I replied it was at times, but at the time I was still working my way through it. In fact, this book is very tedious. Felber lost me when he said that Grady Little faced a very difficult decision in the 2003 ALCS when he went to the mound to talk with Pedro Martinez. He discusses how many times a tiring ace pitcher can be a better choice than a fresh reliever and gives some examples. He completely ignored the fact that Martinez's OPS against jumps over 300 points after 100 pitches.

"The Book on The Book", as previously mentioned in Brian A. Powell's review, is an extremely dry read. I also noticed two errors in the book: Misspelling Sidney Ponson's first name "Sydney" and referring to the umpire monitoring device Questec as "Questrec." All in all, not worth a read.

                2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-03-01

I was really hoping for a fresh, new take on an old topic. But instead, it seems that "The Book on the Book" merely regurgitated the work already done by Palmer and Thorn over 20 years ago.

The author does not appear to have a background in statistics or logical thinking, and unfortunately it shows. On subjects such as the sacrifice bunt, for example, he draws conclusions without analyzing game situations or the quality of the hitter at the plate. Folks at web sites like Baseball Prospectus, Hardball Times and Baseball Analysts have covered this topic in much more extensive detail, thus delivering more meaningful conclusions.

2 out of 5 stars Good Concept; Poor Execution.......2005-09-15

A disappointing purchase, this cannot be the last word on the subject. The book is a pretty dry read. Bill James has printed similar types of essays in various books in a much more lively and entertaining style. Also, some of the methods used and assumptions made are very questionable. (I am an MBA with over 20 years experience in compiling and using statistical data.) Felber's book can only be recommended to the really hardcore fan who is willing to wade through a lot of really boring prose.
