Rosehips, rich in vitamin C, will remedy scurvy. Poplar, red cedar, elm, and willow are preferable for friction fires. If stuck on a flat, shelterless desert, dig a shallow pit (east-west) to lie in; even a few feet can result in a 100-degree temperature change. This is the sort of information outdoor enthusiasts will find in Bradford Angier's classic guide to survival in the wilderness. Divided into four parts (sustenance, warmth, orientation, safety), How To Stay Alive in the Woods is packed with woodcraft tips and age-old tricks--and it's packable as well, so don't leave home without it.
Book Description
HOW TO STAY ALIVE IN THE WOODS is a practical, readable-and potentially indispensable-manual for anyone venturing into the great outdoors.
Broken down into four essential sections, Sustenance, Warmth, Orientation and Safety, this enlightening guide reveals how to catch game without a gun, what plants to eat (full-color illustrations of these make identification simple), how to build a warm shelter, make clothing, protect yourself and signal for help. Detailed illustrations and expanded instructions, newly commissioned for this deluxe edition, offer crucial information at a glance, making How to Stay Alive in the Woods truly a lifesaver. A sturdy, durable rubber cover with Dayglo type protects this must-have from the elements.

Good book?!?.......2007-10-11
I bought this to help me get ready for my first planned camping/backpacking trip incase something was to go wrong I would like to say it is an older printed book but is very helpful. I aint a city feller and have some exsperince in the whole outdoors stuff, but I wanted this to give me some ideas incase something went wrong and I had to try and survive out there alone or with a hurt friend maybe and it is great for what I neede it for I was exspecting alittle morer but it is a paperback andwith that in mind I cant ask much more from it. I now have an idea of how to capture game with several different types of traps and also shelters out the wazzuh. I am going to find a book about the different types of plants and vegitation that grows arounfd my home so I can know what to look for and want poision myself. As I read this I wondered if the guys on the Discovery channel read these books before they get started because if you have watched any of them (Surviorman and etc.)there are so many of the thing they say do and build in this book its unreal, anyway I like the book and it has alot of helpful ideas if you are really wanting to be prepared for anything that could happen.
A fun and handsome book to have around, great to read through or just occaisionally reference........2007-09-08
Like most people who have read this book, I received it as a gift. Perhaps some innate mountain man spirit or boy scout tendencies of mine made somebody think this was an appropriate present to give me around the holidays. Anyways, I appreciated the gift and have only recently gotten around to reading and reviewing it. In this edition of the book the cover is bound in olive drab, grip rubber, not unlike a basketball. This unique cover material makes the book a handsome and manly looking piece of literature if there ever was one.
So what about the content? Well, as a former soldier, I found much of the material consistent with standard military survival manuals, particularly when it comes to woodland survival. The language of the writing is classic 1950's American English, not too removed from those elitist publications put out by the East Coast gentry who cranked out books on every subject following the war. It is, however, not pretentious or condescending, Bradford Angier genuinely has written a book he hopes will assist the stranded, starvation-bound "Average Joe American (or Canadian)."
A fun and attractive book to read with at least a little insight into roughing it, either deliberately or not.

Survive Anything.......2007-04-12
You won't believe the skills you'll pick up from this handbook on survival in the wild. You'll be able to start a fire with only a piece of ice, among other tricks.
This is a great book.......2007-01-10
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it is a little outdated, but the ideas are just as valid today. This is written by a writer who lived off the land and knew exactly how to survive in situations that others would give up on. The fact that this was written before the GPS came around doesn't make it any less valuable a resource.
How on earth do you start a fire with only a piece of ice? Read the book! (And yes, I really don't think I could start such a fire even with the book in front of me, but it's nice to know that it is possible...)
How do you create a fish trap out of sticks? How do you create a snare? How do you find civilization if you are lost? How do you find water? What type of things do you need to bring with you on camping trips? What is safe to eat, and what is not? These types of things are all answered inside.
I've read it cover to cover several times and I believe it is the perfect type of book to give to an outdoorsman or to keep down at a cabin for a little light winter reading...
Highly Recommended!
Its ok but i would not recomend it.......2006-04-05
This book was ok but I would not recomend it.Bradford Angeir is not that great of a writer, so there are many parts that are hard to understand. But if you have time on your hands and want to know about the baics of wilderness survival it is preaty good.

Fantastic.......2006-05-05
This book is filled with useful information, not philosophy. And not the author's feelings or opinions. I learned a lot and it was also a good refresher for those things I already knew. This author uses this book to teach, not preach.

Francoise Allaire is a genius on ice!.......2004-08-15
I bought this book for my son who has been a goaltender for 8 years. He has absorbed everything he could on goaltending and found this book to teach a vast amount of information that he had never heard of, techniques that were immensly helpful and positive for goaltending.
After reading the book he attended the goalie camp which was awesome. Francoise and hs staff were very personable and charismatic, taught the attendees with alot of patience and with a system where they could understand and retain the information easily.
This family is highly behind Allaire on his books, videos and teachings!
Thanks Francoise for sharing your knowledge and giving so much of yourself to the goalie minded youth of today!
An excellent guide for non goalie coaches.......1999-05-13
This is an excellent book for goalie coaches & coaches at the rep or house league level who require assistance in establishing a training and development program for young player and can be applied to adults as well. I have written a guide for adults as we are built differently. email if u r interested and is for both men & women
A great teaching tool for the coach.......1999-03-17
I've been a hockey goalie during 18 years. Now it's time for me to get involved in a different way... as a coach. The young goaler has a lot to learn and a coach can do a lot of damage if he doesn't communicate properly the techniques. The book is a very good tool for the coach. It describes clearly the basic techniques and there are a lot of pictures that illustrate them. I coach 9 yo kids, and I've been able to use many of the drills described in the book.
A very good book for Head coaches/kids/parents........1999-02-03
This is a very good book for non goalies (parents, coaches & kids starting out to play goal. It provides a good plan for developing skills over a three to four year plan. It is geared for the serious coach (rep) & young goalie, but not for adult beginners. After teaching goaltending for 15 years , I developed a guide for adult beginners men &n women and you can contact me at the email below for other info. The Allaire book is an excellent technical starting point and have used it myself, HOWEVER ADULT BEGINNERS ARE DIFFERENT
A-1! I've taught it for 10 years, learned so much !!.......1998-06-11
Goaltenders seem to be loners on a team, however the position is very simple...One needs to build a strong foundation of skills that are developed in a structured and logical manner. Francois addresses these areas, and provides an A-1 training and development guide to be applied on a season long and year long basis. He also addresses the mental aspects that are so critical to a person playing goal. The one area he does not address adequately is females, ie., different physological builds and some the protective equipment is different. He tends to cater the text to the rep and travel level of team and does not cover the parent/coach/goalie relationship to any degree, however it is a very good book !!. I have read about 10 other books on goaltending, I am writing one for adult beginners as I teach adults 18 to 55 how to play goal...it is a treat!!!
Book Description
Great goaltending wins hockey games. Hockey Goaltending covers everything a goalie needs to stone the competition, including:
the best goaltending styles to adopt; techniques and tactics for every shooting situation; 46 exercises for strength, flexibility, speed, and quickness; tips and strategies for mental toughness; and the latest advice on equipment.
The best goalies are in the right place at the right time to stop the puck. They know the angles and have mastered the fundamentals to perform at a consistently high level. Hockey Goaltending is the complete guide for both ice and in-line hockey players to excel at the game's toughest position. With this book, even spectacular saves will seem easy.

Love, it's the best!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-09
A great comprehensive goaltending book. Stretching, taking care of your equipment, practicing, playing, and visualizing...this book has got tons of information and is very helpful. I'd love to see some follow-ups going even further indepth!
This book helped an aspiring goaltender.......2002-04-14
I'm 30, never played a minunte of hockey, and want to play goalie. This is the book I bought. I loved it, because of the general all around information it provides. From stretching, eqiupment, technique , to mental toughness. It also does not talk down to you, as you were ten years old.
My only complaint is the lack of depth in the equipment chapters. If it was an all encompassing book, I would have liked more information on kinds of different pads, masks, gloves, ect.
I recomend this book, they tried to help all areas, and I think it worked on me. And I now play goalie twice a week.
Hockey Goaltending is an outstanding starting book........2002-01-19
Offering a well writen and condensed description of both Ice and Roller/Street hockey for a person wishing to learn the How To's of Hockey Goaltending. It has great descriptions backed up with photo's to truely give the reader an idea of what is being described.
I am in my first year of a Roller Hockey league and have found this book to be outstanding for my level of play. My game has drastically improved and my understanding of the position has too.
I would recomend this book for any and beginner to intermediate levels of players.
The Greatest Goaltending BooK eva.......2001-10-24

SO GOOD.......2001-09-06
I have been a goalie of hockey for 6 years and i know a lot, although i thought i did untill I got this book. This book is telling me stuff i already know, but also a lot more and i have gone through it with in an hour of having it; i aint took it all in yet, but i am gonna read through it loads and loads and try and coach the younger kids from the book.
It is a must buy, cuz when i told my coach i got the book he told me he had also got it and helped him loads.

If you are interesting in playing, this is not for you.......2003-02-03
It's not a very indepth book. If you just want some goaltending highlights go for it, but if you are serious about learning more choose something else.
Adult or kids.......2001-08-23
This book is mainly geared towards kids, but is extremely helpful to a beginning goalie of any age. The full-color pictures and advice from NHL goalies are applicable no matter how old you are. The equipment section is not very in-depth (neither is most of the book), but it is an inexpensive way to get a solid overview of the goaltending position.
Excellent for young goaltenders!.......2001-07-01
Although I am not very familiar with the 'Hockey The NHL Way' series, this book is a great buy! Many of the pictues in the book are not only of NHL goaltenders, but of young players in the minor and 'pee wee' type leagues. It is written in very simple language, so it's not a difficult read for younger players. Although those of us a little older may find it a tad simplistic, the advice is pretty much what you'll find in any other 300 page book on goaltending, only it's something you can whip through in about 20 minutes. Practical as a quick-reference type thing for those of us older folks who are just getting into the game (if the kiddie pictures don't damage your ego too much, that is!).
Loaded with full color photos and practical advice on how to play well, play fair, and be prepared; it also offers more technically oriented information like the strengths and weaknesses of both the stand-up and butterfly styles of goaltending, as well as the proper way to take care of equipment.
Other things about this book I found to be noteworthy:
- the entire book is written in a format that is not gender specific, and although all the pictures are of young boys or NHL players, there is a quote by Danielle Dube; goaltender of the Canadian Women's National Hockey Team. I have yet to find anything in most of the other books I've purchased that includes any input from female players, or is non-gender specific ... a great book for female goaltenders!
- there is some pretty amazing advice on the less technical and physiological elemets of goaltending, like how to be prepared and how to maintain a good level of concentration, as well as team work and good sportsmanship.
- there is a strong emphasis on non-violent competition.
- the book includes some very basic stretches and exercises for young goaltenders.
All in all this book is valuable for just about anyone who is still learning about the wonderful world of netminding. Most definately a great buy for hockey moms and dads as well, since it's a quick read that will help you undrestand what your child needs as a young goaltender, and what s/he needs to work on to improve. The good majority of the book is full colour photos, but it's cheap and the advice is practical. A pretty good investment by my standards!
Clearly Presented Goaltending Techniques.......2000-02-16
Goaltending is an excellent choice for anyone interested in being a young goaltender. Good photographs and concise information which offers tips on goaltending techniques. All the books in this series are "a good buy".

The Goaltending Bible........2001-11-02
As a young goaltender growing up in Toronto I was fortunate enough to watch Jacques Plante play. I have played, studied and taught goaltending for over thirty years. Nobody in the history of the game understood the demanding position of goaltending the way that Plante did. He revolutionized the position. Keep in mind that Bernie Parent didn't achieve his full potential until he came to Toronto and worked with Plante, Tretiak learned to play goal largely by studying films of Plante. Yes, this book is a little dated, especially the equipment section, but it is a well written book by the best to ever play the position. A must read for any aspiring goaltender.
Very basic book, not updated to new techniques..........2001-01-19
This book is a very basic book. I found it not so helpful in the way that the information contained in the book isnt updated to the new techniques. Plante has never used the most popular NHL style ( the V style, butterfly) so its a big lack even if he has a few pages on it. The information is sometime unclear, not necessarely well write. Some things are repeated many times. So, I you buy this book, its OK. But dont rely ONLY on it. BUY other more modern books that are concious of today goaltending.
If you can only afford one goaltending book, this is it!.......1999-02-28
This goalie's bible addresses all aspects of the position - physical, mental, and pregame conditioning. Jacques Plante was the master professor of goaltending; thankfully, he committed his best tips and techniques to this superb manual. I originally bought it in the late 70's, and recently purchased the latest edition for my son. If you don't label, dog-ear, and highlight every few pages of this ultimate hands-on guide, you're not using it right!!
A good starter book for aspiring goaltenders........1999-02-10
Although Jacques Plante has passed on,this book serves as a reminder of his great work ethic. While many books break positions down to minute strategies, this one stays more fundamental. Coverage of mental and physical form along with equiptment and coaching of goalies is achieved gracefully. My son and I broke things down for his begining level and he thoroughly enjoys it.

The only job in sports that seems crazier than hockey goalie is hockey goalie in the era before masks. That time is examined in A Breed Apart, an exuberant, photo-rich tribute to the game's last line of defense and most interesting personalities. The great goalies--from Vezina and Worters to Dryden and Roy--are profiled in detail, and there are smart era-by-era analyses of how the position's equipment and style of play have changed, and how each relates to the other. Ultimately, the players beneath the padding emerge as the unique sporting characters implied by the title. As Gerry Cheevers, famed for decorating his mask with the stitches it saved him from, observes, "We goaltenders, alone and unloved, tend to be very proud bastards." In A Breed Apart, they make the most of their chance to preen.

Excellent book for the goaltending enthusiast!'.......1999-12-11
Those of us who play goal know what unique characters we are. This book highlights all the greats from the early days of the sport up to now. Pictures galore. Spreads of early equipment. Full head shots of masks, old and new. Profiles of many of the greats to ever play the position. The innovators and the champions. A well rounded history of the insanely brave men who guard the cages. I reccomend it to all into the sport or the position.
Great book for anyone interested in goaltending.......1998-05-02
This is a fabulous and very detailed book about the history of goaltending. The book spans from the very first goaltenders all the way to today's goalies. The book has many great pictures along with stories and interesting facts. The book got me interested right away. It shows pictures all the way from before the 1900's and up to today. Famous goalies such as, Jaques Plante, Terry Sawchuck, and many others. I highly recoment this book for just about anyone. This would be a fabulous book for any goaltender currently playing on a team. The book is so well done and easy to read and follow it really brings you into the time of the earlier goaltenders. Just overall...a great book
