Book Description

Fractals and surfaces are two of the most widely-studied areas of modern physics. In fact, most surfaces in nature are fractals. In this book, Drs. Barabási and Stanley explain how fractals can be successfully used to describe and predict the morphology of surface growth. The authors begin by presenting basic growth models and the principles used to develop them. They next demonstrate how models can be used to answer specific questions about surface roughness. In the second half of the book, they discuss in detail two classes of phenomena: fluid flow in porous media and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). In each case, the authors review the model and analytical approach, and present experimental results. This book is the first attempt to unite the subjects of fractals and surfaces, and it will appeal to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics. Because of the technological importance of MBE, it will also be of interest to scientists, particularly materials scientists, working in industry and research. 5 out of 5 stars Good on self affine scaling.......2004-04-14

I'm not into surfaces and have only used a small part of this book for one purpose: for an introduction to self affine scaling. The topic is presented very systematically, with nice examples. Especially nice is the binomial model of multiaffine scaling. Multiaffine scaling is supposed to appear in "soft" fluid turbulence and is often mislabeled multifractal scaling, which is a horse of a different color altogether!

5 out of 5 stars Fractal Concepts in Surface Growth.......2001-05-16

This is the first book I have so far encountered on interface growth to treat the subject in a simple, intuitive and entertaining manner. All the basic mathematical concepts are explained, the book is easy to read and contains plenty of illustrations and examples from real life. Barabasi and Stanley show how processes ranging from accumulation of snow on car windows, to bacterial colony growth on agar surfacees, are governed by similiar mathematical laws. Exercises are conceptual as well as mathematical, with many questions asking for discussion or further research. This book is essential for novices and experts alike.

    Book Description

Molecular beam epitaxy was initially developed by J.R.Arthur and A.Y. Choover 20years ago for growth of GaAs and GaAs-AlxGa1-xAs heterostructures. It has subsequently been extended to an ever-widening variety of materials while maintaining key advantages over other techniques of epitaxial film growth such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), liquid phase epitaxy (LPE), metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) and related techniques. These advantages include the ability to control growth reproducibly to atomic monolayer dimensions and to monitor the growth process in real time. For example, the ultra-high vacuum growth environment of MBE makes it possible to study the dynamics of the growth process itself using modulated molecular beam techniques and RHEED (reflection high energy electron diffraction). In addition, other in situ techniques such as XPD (x-ray photoelectron diffraction) can be used to examine the formation of interfaces and film growth modes.

In this volume the Editor and Contributors have set out to describe the use of MBE for a range of key materials systems which are of interest for both technological and fundamental reasons. Prior books on MBE have provided an introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of MBE and emphasize growth and characterization of GaAs-based structures. The aim in this book is somewhat different; it is to demonstrate the versatility of the technique by showing how it can be utilized to prepare and explore a range of distinct and diverse materials. For each of these materials systems MBE has played a key role both in their development and application to devices.

            Book Description

Chemical Beam Epitaxy (CBE), is a powerful growth technique which has come to prominence over the last ten years. Together with the longer established molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE), CBE provides a capability for the epitaxial growth of semiconductor and other advanced materials with control at the atomic limit. This, the first book dedicated to CBE, and closely related techniques comprises chapters by leading research workers in the field and provides a detailed overview of the state-of-the-art in this area of semiconductor technology. Topics covered include equipment design and safety considerations, design of chemical precursors, surface chemistry and growth mechanisms, materials and devices from arsenide, phosphide, antimonide, silicon and II-VI compounds, doping, selected area epitaxy and etching. The volume provides an introduction for those new to the field and a detailed summary for experienced researchers.

                Book Description

Doping profiles are a key element in the development of modern semiconductor technology. This book is the first to give a comprehensive review of the theory, fabrication, characterization, and device applications of abrupt, shallow, and narrow doping profiles in semiconductors. After an introductory chapter sets out the basic theoretical and experimental concepts involved, the authors discuss the fabrication of abrupt and narrow doping profiles by several different techniques, including epitaxial growth. They then present the techniques for characterizing doping distributions, followed by several chapters on the inherent physical properties of narrow doping profiles. The latter part of the book deals with specific devices. The book will be of great interest to graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the fields of semiconductor physics and microelectronic engineering.

                      Book Description

Human impact on natural landscapes through urbanization and agricultural expansion are becoming more and more dramatic and are the cause of serious environmental problems. This volume examines the effect of landscape disturbance on plant and animal diversity in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. It begins with three introductory chapters broadly reviewing the issues of landscape degradation. Further contributions describe regional land use conflicts in each of the five regions. Landscape disturbance and plant diversity, and landscape disturbance and animal diversity are treated in separate chapters. Four contributions deal with demography and ecophysiology in vegetation succession following disturbance. The volume closes with a consideration of the future addressing aspects of environmental politics.

                          Book Description

This study investigates the extent of the pollution of the Mediterranean Sea with respect to the four bordering EC countries - Spain, France, Italy and Greece. The environmental pressures and economic impacts are examined and the institutional/legal framework is described, together with all the necessary environmental expenditures. Separate chapters are devoted to each of the four countries, after an initial section summarizing the major commonalities. These chapters are organized in parallel formats so that it is possible to examine the same topic, country-by-country.
Excellent references are provided for the reader who is not familiar with Mediterranean pollution. For specialists the book provides a useful overview of adjacent fields other than their own speciality; for policymakers the chapters provide sufficient foundations for decision-making, for the investment planner and banks it provides budget and investment needs; and for the private sector it gives an insight into the possibilities for corporate applications of environmental technologies.

                                  Book Description

In the last few years several States have established specially protected marine areas under their domestic legislation. At the international level the trend towards providing an increased protection to certain marine spaces has also been reflected in a number of treaties and declarations. This volume reviews the recent developments in the field of specially protected marine areas and preservation of the marine environment in general with particular emphasis on a specific region, the Mediterranean Sea. Special attention is devoted to the latter for three reasons. First, the regional framework for the protection of the environment in the Mediterranean (the so-called Barcelona system) has recently been updated and strengthened. Second, the Mediterranean is a typical example of the category of semi-enclosed seas where international cooperation between the bordering States should be particularly encouraged in various fields; this also explains why the scope of this book has been enlarged to also cover fisheries, a field which is closely connected to the sustainable development of marine areas. Last and least, the parochial inclination of the editor also influenced his choice. To complete the picture the relevant texts have been reproduced and a series of maps showing some specially protected marine areas have been drawn.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about the Mediterranean Sea........2004-12-11

And yet another book from the Greenpeace stable with an emphasis on conservation - just as it should be! Anything and everything to do with the Mediterranean Sea is included here.

There is an old saying amongst British Scuba Divers which goes; "The Med' is Dead!" In reality the Mediterranean Sea is not dead at all - although it may well have become so were it not for the efforts of Greenpeace and others.

There is no point in anyone stepping over rocks on the shores of the River Po which have been turned bright orange through many years of toxic waste flowing over them - only to go either fishing or swimming a short distance away. Once that toxicity enters the water, it then becomes embedded in the river-bed. It will also travel and pollute the entire river and continue on into the sea. In short, that pollution is there to stay and this book explains it all in great detail - and does so far better than any other book I have read on the subject.

We all know Greenpeace for their daring acts of confrontation. Why else would their flagship have been blown up by a country's official (not-so) secret service? It is, however, those daring acts which make the headlines and not the day-to-day business of collecting samples of toxic waste from this river or that pipeline. Such mundane tasks, however, are just as dangerous as, for example, placing your inflatable boats in front of the harpoons of Whaling Ships. On either assignment you "can" get killed.

Elsewhere the book explains the problems associated with the disposal of human sewerage along those stretches of popular beaches which boast 45 high-rise hotels per kilometre (just over a half mile) of beach. There are times when tourists are packed onto those beaches like Sardines in a can and each one of them will bathe. Just a short distance offshore, all the effluent from their hotels is released into that same sea. It's a nice holiday for some.

The book is expertly laid out so that the reader is able to build on the knowledge gained from what has been read so far. It is all about what Greenpeace does best - isolate and identify those areas in need of urgent protection. Packed with information supported by outstanding colour photography and diagrams, this book brings home a message loud and clear and is one that should be read by anyone who either lives in the region or is just an occasional visitor - or simply by anyone who wants to support a worthy organisation.
