Written from a conceptual point of view and emphasizing fundamentals, the second edition of Fiber Reinforced Composites offers updated and expanded sections including: fibres and matrix, including thermoplastic matrices; discontinuous fibres and laminated structures; static mechanical properties, fatigue properties and damage tolerance; resin flow, bag moulding, filament winding and resin transfer moulding; and environmental effects. New coverage is provided on subjects such as thermoplastic composite manufacturing; delamination initiation; metal and ceramic matrix composites; woven fabrics; residual stress; and alternative microchemical equations.;With literature citations, figures, tables and display equations, this book is designed both as a reference for mechanical, manufacturing, materials, aerospace, automotive design and structural engineers, and a text for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in the above disciplines.
Customer Reviews:
good overview of composites.......2005-05-12
This is a good overview of composites. The chapter on mechanics could be rewritten using matrices which would eliminate many formulas.
Overall a very good book

Book Description
The updated edition of the cornerstone introduction to analyzing composite materials.
Analysis and Performance of Fiber Composites, Third Edition is a revision of the classic fundamentals book on composite materials. It provides a complete, up-to-date treatment of the mechanics, materials, analysis, fabrication, characterization, and performance of composite materials, complete with numerous worked examples and exercise problems. The book features new material on such cutting-edge topics as analyzing structures, smart composite structures, and computer software for composite structure analysis.
This Third Edition of the classic text includes greater coverage of composites technology and presents new material on:
- Analysis of laminated plates and beams
- Emerging composite materials
- Measurement of physical properties
- Analysis of orthotropic lamina
- Thermal stresses
- Free-edge effects joints
- Fracture mechanics
Complete with guidance for using the latest MATLAB software for analysis, Analysis and Performance of Fiber Composites, Third Edition is a must-have for every engineer, scientist, and student in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Falls short on design.......2007-09-19
This textbook is aimed at graduate students but it is not good for an undergraduate course such as senior technical elective because it is very light on design considerations and design examples. No software is provided so the students will have to spend lots of time programming. Appendix 5 "Computer Programs for Laminate Analysis" is worthless; a one-page table listing Matlab, Mathcad, Maple, and references to commercial finite element programs, none of which are used in the textbook. The 3rd Edition only adds a chapter on "plates and beams" and another on "emerging composite materials"; if you have the 2nd edition you don't need a new copy.
Excellent overview of composite material performance and anlysis.......2007-07-04
This book is written in a very systematic manner and covers a broad range of composite materials performance starting from basic mechanics. Some contents are quite unique and I never found other composite books. For example, failure modes of composite materials are well-described and almost all-inclusive. This book shoould be a must read for the begginers who want to learn the subject of composite materials in a short time. Someone who understands the basic of composite and wants to do deep-down research, chapter 3 and 4 would be a great review for them.
Overall, I would rate this book as an excellent overview of performance and mechanics of composite materials.

This book is AWESOME!!
I love it, it is very educational!
I used it to write a presentation on Techno Textiles, and I got so much info out of it!
Whether it's architecture or art, students at the college level will find Extreme Textiles both accessible and detailed.......2006-02-03
Innovative textiles offer some of the most intriguing design options today, but few design or textile coverages discuss extreme textiles in such depth and detail. Matilda McQuaid's Extreme Textiles: Designing For High Performance surveys engineered fabrics and their radical uses, from cardiac constraint socks to airbags and transportation textiles. Even buildings use these extreme textiles in construction, and Extreme Textiles surveys all these uses in a blend of startling full-page illustrations and discussions of fiber properties, performance standards, and unique uses. Whether it's architecture or art, students at the college level will find Extreme Textiles both accessible and detailed.
A Report on Recent Progress in New Materials........2005-09-01
There has been tremendous progress made in materials science in the last twenty years or so. And a surprising amount of that work has been in materials used in fabrics. Fabrics, including rigid items like fiberglass or carbon fiber items, have been designed to handle a wide variety of tasks that previously either couldn't be done (the bouncing satellite on Mars), or were much more expensive, or were performed less adequately (sporting equipment).
This book is a review of these advances. Ms. McQuaid is at the National Design Museum where she oversees a collection of more than thirty thousand textiles produced over 23 centuries. She has written much of the book, but has gotten contributions from a series of other textile experts from London, Canada, and of course the United States. The book is profusely illustrated to serve as an idea book of the types of items that can be manufactured with the new fabrics.

Carbon Fibers presents an up-to-date review of the progress pertaining to the formation of carbon fibers from rayon, acrylic, and pitch precursors. The book emphasizes the preparation, characterization, and properties of commercial materials. It also considers the compressive properties of carbon fibers, the lack of correlation between surface characterization and fiber-matrix interactions, and the discrepancy between surface composition as determined by XPS and the reaction of surface groups with chemical reagents. Book Description
Wool, leather or cotton like most natural products are permeable to air and water vapor. The reason for this property is a fibrous structure consisting of chains of hydrophilic constituents such as cellulose or collagene. It is difficult to imitate this natural phenomenon by synthesis. Ways to obtain water vapor permeability by microporosity or a hydrophilic structure are discussed in this book (nearly 2,500 citations). Most commercial products permeable to water vapor substitutes for natural leather are named. Materials permeable to water vapor offer a wide range of use, the subsitution of leather was only the starting point. Other uses are in the medical sector for implants and dialysis, in industry for filtration or catalytic reactions or for processes demanding the slow release of substances. Further applications of this interesting chemistry will surely be developed in the future.

Handbook of Composites.......2001-04-06
This is book provides a comprehensive overview of composites, both their production and their properties. The book considers the composites' microstructure and its effect on the composites' material properties. However, it is a relatively old book, and some of the properties shown maybe out of date. A newer edition (if there is one) would be helpful.

Book Description
Our relationship with the millions of other species with which we share this earth is institutionalized by many organizations, some of which seek to influence policy in the wildlife arena. Wildlife and the Public Interest is a study of this complex wildlife industry, examining the structure, conduct, and performance of those involved. It studies the extreme complexity of the policy process with regard to the relationship between humans and wildlife. A special focus in this book is on the role of nonprofit organizations that have come to dominate large segments of the industry. Students and scholars of public policy, or environmental and resource policy, as well as the general reader interested in this important topic, will find Wildlife and the Public Interest an invaluable resource. The book begins with a characterization of current wildlife policy. Further chapters discuss the wildlife industry; What is wildlife? How do we interact with it? What sort of organizations exist in the interest of wildlife? Two current case studies--of the evolution of the controversial captive breeding program for the California Condor and of the regulation of harvest and export of the bobcat--explore the complexities of policy making and the range of nonprofit activity. Finally, the book examines the community of nonprofit organizations in an interorganizational setting.
