5 out of 5 stars Rated by an Everglades Wildlife Biologist - Robert King.......2006-04-18

As you might tell from the above title I am quite proud of my professional attachment to the glades. I deeply love the glades and am angered by the deplorable condition that politicians, government and our American culture have allowed this unique ecosystem to degrade to. Americans, especially Florida residents, must be motivated to demand that politicians and government do whatever it takes to recover and nurture what is left of the Everglades. Anything less is shameful! Look for the book I am completing on the Everglades.

Roger L. Hammer's Everglades Wildflowers book is an outstanding work, both by him and the publisher The Globe Pequot Press (Falcon).

Knowledge of wildflowers is not a personal strength of mine. I needed a book that I was confident contained clear, accurate information on the wildflowers that are found in the glades. I'm very curious for any unusual characteristics that are not commonly known about species. Mr. Hammer gave me both. Example: The Horned Bladderwort is a very small yellow aquatic flower that is common to the Everglades marsh. But it was not until I got a copy of Mr. Hammer's book that I learned that this flower is a predator! It is the only aquatic carnivorous plant in North America.

This glossy paged book has color plates, a glossary and something that took me by surprise - a very informative description of Everglades natural history including habitat descriptions.

This is a book of unusually high quality. If you're an Everglades naturalist I think you'll want to add this one to your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A fine guide to the budding and experienced naturalist.......2003-07-28

I believe that this book will be valuable to the budding naturalist struggling to keep up on a wildflower hike and to the seasoned ranger in Everglades National Park. Arranged by color, the book is easy to use while giving a tour with interesting anecdotes that you can study beforehand. A great addition to anyones Nature Guides.

    Book Description

This new paddling guide to Florida's 10,000 Islands and Big Cypress region features trips for canoes and kayaks.

This new guide features saltwater paddling tours in the northern and central 10,000 Islands, as well as a handful of freshwater tours in the Big Cypress Swamp. Trips emanate out of multiple put-ins and take-outs, including Rookery Bay Estuarine Reserve (Marco Island), Goodland, Port of the Islands, Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, Everglades City, and Big Cypress National Preserve.

Each trip described in this new guide will include information on distance, difficulty, recommended charts, and navigational features, as well as discussing winds, tides, and safety issues. The author also discusses natural and historical features, estuarine and mangrove ecology, and local wildlife. Finally, he provides information on equipment, outfitters, supplies, rentals, and recommendations for low-impact paddling. 35 black & white photographs, index.

5 out of 5 stars So far, so good.......2006-04-19

I live in Naples, FL. I recently started kayaking and bought two kayaks about a month ago. I've done about 8 of the trails in this book and I make it back in one piece after each trip. I feel well prepared for each trip and I take the book with me as back-up since I seem to gravitate toward the more difficult trips. I am thouroughly enjoying this book. Certainly worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Day-tripping guide to northwestern Everglades.......2004-02-01

I bought this book on the recommendation of a park ranger at the Big Cypress National Preserve Visitor Center. The content is quite specific, covering only trips of 14 or fewer miles and only those in the northwestern Everglades region, starting on Marco Island at the north end of 10,000 Islands and ending at Chokoloskee on the south end. Both fresh and saltwater routes are included, both loop trails and those requiring a shuttle; the author claims to have paddled them all.

Because the book is limited in scope, the trip descriptions have more detail than other more inclusive guides to the Everglades. The author, a photographer, has an interest in the natural history of the area and so provides commentary on the flora and fauna the paddler can expect to encounter. In my opinion this is one of the book's strengths. For example, in the Introduction, there is a nearly-2-pages-long description of the mangrove trees that populate the area.

The book divides the region into 7 areas, for example, trips beginning (or ending) off the Tamiami Trail. A 1-page map with marked route is provided for each trip. Also provided are trip highlights, recommended charts and maps for navigation, trip rating (easy, moderate, difficult), estimated total time, total distance, hazards, launch site, trail ownership, and alternate routes. At the end of the book an appendix gives addresses and contact information on government agencies, food and lodging providers, campgrounds, guide and boat rental services, and suggested further reading.

I have paddled 2 of the shorter trails covered in this book, the Sandfly Island loop and the Halfway Creek to Everglades City route. Information on distances and directions to put-ins seem to be accurate. (Paddling distances are given in nautical miles, land distances in statute miles.) Total times seem to be on the long side, but of course these will vary depending on type of boat used, wind and tidal conditions, and individual paddling style. My only other quibble with the book is that criteria used for the trip ratings are not explained.

Overall, I feel this book is a useful addition to the library of paddling guides to the Everglades, particularly for those interested in natural history. And, having just been released in January 2004, it provides current information on which trails have navigation markers.

      Book Description

The swamplands of southwest Florida are a hauntingly beautiful, complex, and delicate environment. Yet, like much of our country's wilderness at the beginning of the 21st century, it is threatened by a burgeoning population and uncontrolled growth. With color photographs, quotations, poetry, scientific information, and the authors' personal experiences, Florida's Unsung Wilderness: The Swamps highlights the diversity and beauty of this unique ecosystem and works to inspire readers to become involved in its preservation.

      5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2000-10-29

Bransilver & Richardson have created a masterpiece! They are to be commended for brilliantly portraying one of the most challenging natural ecosystems to study: Swamps. Their talent and dedication shines on every page! The wildlife shots are superb -- much more than just documentary renderings. All the flora and fauna here, large and small, are revealed in soulful essence. If this book alone isn't reason(s) to save the dazzling natural wealth of the Everglades and other threatened wetlands then Man is morally bankrupt. Bravo Bransilver and Richardson. You help us see with new eyes!!

      5 out of 5 stars Florida's Unsung Wilderness : The Swamps.......2000-10-16

This visually stunning book is a delight to the eyes and a splendour to the mind. The authors' wide experience and long hours in the swamps shows in the exquisite color photographs; their love of the place - a tropical jungle in our own United States - shines through. They manage to convey both through the pictures and through the educational and prosaic text the uniqueness, diversity and splendour of this wondrous ecosystem. This book is a must-read for children as well as for adults, for all people who want to know more - and we all should - about the importance of the Florida swamps. This book allows us to appreciate our own wilderness, both because of the beauty reflected in the photos and because of the vast amount of information explained in a down-to-earth manner. And while it is not a prescription book for saving the threatened swamps, it is a springboard from which the reader can try to do something to help save them. Their message: it is only when you know something that you can love it and only if you love it will you save it. You can almost feel the water slowly trickling by as you pass your eyes over the images, and hear the owls calling to each other. Truly splendid.

              Book Description

Cypress Swamps is the first study of its kind to analyze a common southeastern ecosystem by integrating laboratory and field study with computer modeling to establish a basis for further analyses of perturbations in wetlands. Its three sections deal with the general characteristics of cypress swamps, the impact of recycling secondarily treated wastewater into cypress-dominated ecosystems, and swamps in a larger environmental context, all in an effort to define their usefulness to human systems.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Groundbreaking.......2000-09-23

This book was one of the initial efforts at understanding entire ecosystems and their current and potential role in the increasingly human landscape. Wastewater treatment is covered at length, but even further, effort is made to put these ecosystems into a regional perspective. Their value is discussed at many scales This book is an excellent example of ecological study, and a must read for anyone in the field. p.s. Dr. Odum is not the photographer. He and Dr. Ewel co-edited the volume, and he provides the closing remarks about cypress swamps using a whole-systems perspective.

4 out of 5 stars The definitive book on Swamps!.......1999-12-24

Of all the books I've ever read about swamps, this one is the finest.

In total, I've read 0 books on swamps but, take my word. This one is one to remember. Mark my words and spank me.

              Book Description

Ever daydream about what it's like to quit your job, sell your house and most of your possessions, say good-bye to your neighbors, and set sail with your family--permanently? Tom and Mel Neale left their 9 to 5 world nearly two decades ago and never looked back. In 1979 the Neales left their law and education careers and traded their suburban home for a three-room boat. Now their neighborhood is a Chesapeake Bay cove, or a secluded Bahamian beach, or anywhere else they choose to anchor. And along the way they raised two daughters. For the Neales, living aboard and cruising is about taking control of their world and their environment, a sometimes difficult but always rewarding existence. All in the Same Boat is one family's testament to the belief that you can lead your own life, whatever that might be. For the Neales, it hasn't been a vacation. Instead of living to work, they work to live, but they make time for adventure and play, too. Here's everything you need to know to follow them: choosing the right boat; provisioning for long-term cruising; getting along in close quarters; learning what you can leave behind; earning a living--and how to hold on to the money; what to expect in the cruising life, and how to handle it; preparing the crew and boat; raising--and educating--kids; keeping in touch; making the ocean your backyard.

5 out of 5 stars A great practical and insightful guide to cruising and living aboard!.......2005-07-27

My wife and I found this book shortly before purchasing a Gulfstar 47 like the one the Neals' owned while writing this book, and it was a significant factor in our deciding to purchase the boat. In our nearly four years' living aboard in Sausalito, we were never able to quite 'cut the cord' and go cruising as we'd hoped, but we gleaned a quite a bit of useful information from this book, as would would anyone with a boat in the 30-60 ft range that they intend to live on. We found many of the insights (everything from how to anchor without endangering others or being endangered by others, to hints on how to not drive each other crazy while hanging out together below decks during the rain) repeated in our own experiences and the experiences of others who had cruised from Alaska to Ecuador.

We moved off the boat in anticipation of the birth of our daughter (we've known people who've raised infants aboard, and decided we're not that hardcore), but this book remains on our shelf in anticipation of the year when our children are old enough to undertake the voyage!

              4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-02-19

This is a rare book about cruising that gives you a taste of the attitudes of long-term voyagers. I loved reading a book in which the author reveals his desire for hot showers and ice-cubes for his evening cocktails. The spartan life may be ok for me but my wfie and kids? Lots of good technical information. Escape the system that has enslaved us without our knowing!

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2001-05-20

I loved this book! As a current live aboard I really enjoyed everything presented about family life for cruisers. The insights the young daughters give helps understand how kids aboard percieve the experience. Excellent reading for anyone thinking of moving onto a boat with a family.

1 out of 5 stars All in the same boat - Bitterness and Contempt.......2001-05-09

Although there is much useful information contained in this book, the tone is simply awful. After reading this book I could not help but think that Mr. Neale is a bitter man who gave up his former life only to find himself broke living his chosen life of perpetual vacation. According to the author the rest of us are stuck in mindless consumption working away in sterile cubicles. The author seems to have conveniently forgotten that his boat, fuel, supplies, food, computers, software, etc., etc. would not exist along with his chosen lifestyle without the rest of us working our jobs and actually contributing something.

In addition, the author uses every opportunity to present examples of incompetent boaters who unlike the master seaman that he is are a hazard to themselves and others. Continuous whining about the faults of current boat designs also adds to the overall obnoxious tone of the book. According to the author boat designers and manufactures don't know what they are doing. He thinks that a boat designed for weekend use and docked in a harbor should work just as well continuously at sea. If that is what he wanted, he should have bought a vessel designed for commercial use and paid the price, not whine about design tradeoffs that were made to make boating more affordable to the public.

What is missing from this book is a little humility and gratitude. Gratitude that he as been able to live his dream instead of contempt for others who do not choose to or are unable.

Continous whinning about the faults of current boat designs also adds to the overall obnoxous tone of the book. According to the author boat designers and manufactures don't know what they are doing. He thinks that a boat designed for weekend use and docked in a harbor should work just as well continously at sea. If that is what he wanted , he should have bought a vessel designed for commercial use and paid the price, not whine about design tradeoffs that were made to make boating more afforable to the public.

What is missing from this book, is a little humility and gratitude. Gratitude that he as been able to live his dream instead of contempt for others who do not choose to or are unable.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutly the best book I've read about cruising........2007-09-03

This book is outstanding! This is the most thorough, down to earth, well thought out how to account of cruising life that I've found. If you find a better book out there about the realities of cruising please contact me with the title. I can't imagine anyone who is thinking about living on a boat not being thouroughly satisfied with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and informative.......2007-07-15

Being homeschoolers we have a number of friends who live full time on their boats and many sail around the world which is a great hands on learning experience.

The thing I like about this book that other books lacked, is information on things like what to do about mail, TV via satellite, computer use, and information that helps you realize even if you live on land, just how much stuff you DON'T need. It's a book that will inform the 2007 reader well.

Banking, paying bills and everyday information that is a must to know. And buying food locally, fishing etc. Visiting other places and knowning the stuff you need to know there.

As well as how to have the right boat for your needs so that you have the comforts you need and even some you want. Now that I am a widow I am seriously considering getting back to living on a boat full time.

5 out of 5 stars Great coastal cruising book.......2006-07-22

I'm a wannabe bluewater cruiser and this is the first book I bought to learn about this adventure. I would highly rate this book for basic and technical information, with some limitations. Neale covers all the systems on the boat and the problems and the advantages of each. There are four limitations of the book though. First of all he is a coastal cruiser primarily and the open ocean sailing part is not there. Secondly, there is some other info that's left out. An example is anchoring. He discusses this thoroughly because of its importance, but never tells you what a CQR or Danforth anchor really is. I know there are limitations on length. Also, he never mentions product names. It would be good to have some names of products that really worked well or were dismal failures. This is probably my biggest gripe. And some cost factors too. We can adjust for the time factor. But again, this is a great book. I understand much more how the electrical inverters, toilets, stoves, water systems, frigs, etc. operate on a boat and why I do or don't need them. Buy this book if you're looking for a good read that's loaded with info.

              5 out of 5 stars Impressions.......2006-07-09

My husband and I both loved this book because we think it offered very practical advice. I also loved the pictures and the input from the author's wife and children. I highly recommend it!

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-01-02

This book is an excellent resource worth much more than the price. I've read a few books on this subject and this is by far the best. We are in the process of looking for our live aboard boat. We feel we have a better understanding of what we need and what we want since reading what the Neele's had to say. I enjoyed the different viewpoints from all the family members. Highly recommended!
