The field of endocrine disruption or endocrine active compounds (EACs), which is just emerging and still controversial, is comprehensively covered by leading experts in Volume 3, Subvolumes L (Part I) and M (the present volume, Part II). The major classes of endocrine active chemicals are discussed, as well as methods for their detection and their association with health disturbances in humans and wildlife. The etiology of several of the human diseases associated with endocrine disruptors, e.g. breast and prostate cancer, decreased fertility and malformations, is still poorly understood, and the current state of knowledge is presented. Since hormonally active agents appear to have the potential of both adverse and beneficial effects, the evidence of health benefits associated with endocrine active compounds in humans is also presented. Basic chapters on the mode of action of EACs and on the etiology of the associated diseases facilitate the understanding of this complex subject for non-medical readers.

The two volumes comprising this new handbook provide a unique resource for studies involving toxicity profiles in aquatic, avian, and mammalian species. The arrangement of material in alphabetical order by species allows the reader straightforward access to information on the effects of chemicals on various life forms. For each group of species, the acute and chronic (short- and long-term) toxicity data are arranged in descending order, enabling the reader to evaluate the relative toxicity of chemicals for any given species. This arrangement of data also indicates the relative importance of exposure routes. Toxicity profiles include LC50 values, cancer indices, and Virtually Safe Doses (VSDs) and are provided for each organ. In addition, the Handbook provides important comparisons of identical toxicity testing methods and duration of exposure (e.g., LC5096h) to arrive at a ratio. The ambient concentration and its ratio to the toxic level will assist in selecting the cut-off chemical. This approach helps the reader to maximize the use of resources and to generate data that are specifically relevant to the species and ecosystem under study. The species-specific approach in the Handbook of Chemical Toxicity Profiles of Biological Species makes it a powerful tool for a wide range of studies. It may be used, for example, in evaluating the status of endangered or other species, making impact assessments, developing regulatory controls, and determining important areas for future research.

As a beginner of aikido, I am sometimes at a loss at remembering everything from the recent class. This book gives a good insight into aikido and has brilliant illustrations to aid the novice with technique.
A MUST HAVE FOR ANY BEGINNER
The drawings make this book..........2007-02-12
This is an excellent text, although possibly too much info for the beginner. The incredible drawings are the illustrations by which all others are judged. Numerical designations for techniques may prove confusing for some people used to describing techniques with the classical Japanese nomenclature.

OK, the illustrations LOOK easy and simpel. But i really dislike this book. Techniques have names, these names expand your knowledge of japanese, the language for a part as well as how to understand it. And here we use some numbers ????
Uke uses attack #37, tori responds with a number #12... no... that's old school, in times when we didn't know beter...
Best Aikido book out there.......2006-11-10
This book covers all the basics of aikido. It has very useful information by showing the ideas behind the moves. With outstanding illustrations together it digs to the core of aikido.
Great book on Aikido, but...........2006-09-13
A lot of good things have been said about this book by many others, and I basically agree with them. So, I'm not going to repeat any of them here. However, the one thing that I don't like about this book is that, instead of using the common terminology used by aikidoka around the world, the authors use algebraic terms like "attack #1" neutralised by "immobilization #2". Why can't they just use the proper terms such as "shomen-uchi" and "nikyo"? Give me a break. This is like calling "slamdunk" a "scoring technique #5".
