5 out of 5 stars Would give it more than 5 stars if I could!.......2007-10-11

I rarely write reviews, but I LOVE this book! You can actually find the bird you want to identify! I started with Stan's "Birds of Illinois," which was great. Now I am learning the Birds of Wisconsin (some overlap, of course). And with the addition of the CD, now I can learn their calls too. Stan tells you exactly the identifying feature that helps you tell the birds apart--features that you can actually see! And the book is small enough to carry with you when traveling. Thanks, Stan!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great backyard bird watchers book........2007-08-16

Very easy to find the birds your looking at even if you don't what they are. Also includes interesting tidbits about the birds.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea but very poor results.......2007-07-07

I rarely pick up this book without putting it down in disgust. The arrangement by color is extremely inconvenient (males and females are often in different sections of the book). The coverege of species is very incomplete and much of the information that is presented as facts is quite questionable. A field guide to the Birds of Wisconsin would be a great asset, but save your money and wait for a more authoritative book. I've added this book to the back forty of my bookcase along with Stan's Wildflowers of Wisconsin.

5 out of 5 stars Birds book.......2007-02-17

The book is very informative, since we have a lot of birds in our area where we live. We wanted to know what kind of birds they are and what they eat. We got some bird feeders and houses for them. They are such beautiful birds to see and watch what they're doing. We took some pictures and these birds are the ones that we never have seen in our lives until we moved here....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent everything you need.......2006-07-20

It covers everything you need and has great pictures. If I were to ask for one change it would be please put the birds in alphabetic order.

2 out of 5 stars Less than "Complete".......2004-04-16

I eagerly opened this book after buying it, only to be very disappointed. Looking at the maps, the index, and the references to the national park system, I could find no mention at all of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. That seems very odd, because Pictured Rocks has several campgrounds, and one might think a "complete" guide would at least cover what the NPS has to offer. Other errors and omissions include maps that incorrectly identify the locations of Twin Lakes State Park and FJ McLain State Park (the former is shown southwest of Mass City when it is actually 15 miles northeast, while the latter is shown at Copper Harbor when it is actually 50 miles to the southwest), as well as the absence of the Ottawa National Forest campgrounds directly accessible from US 45 north of Watersmeet. These are just a few problems in one limited geographical area of Upper Michigan with which I happen to have a little bit of familiarity. If I have to rely on my own travels and experiences to fill in the gaps and inaccuracies in this supposedly "complete" guide, how useful will it be with regard to those areas of which I have no prior knowledge?

5 out of 5 stars This CD set is wonderful!.......2007-05-22

I can finally pick out which birds are singing which songs. We listen to it on the road and my son reads along in the field guide. For years I have wanted to be able to identify which song belongs to which bird, but I had a lot of difficulty with this as I am not a auditory learner. Stan clearly introduces the bird and gives a solid description of the type of song and when/where you are likely to hear it. I feel almost like I've been blessed with learning a foreign language. Absolutely wonderful!

    Book Description

Take a walk on the wild side with the completely updated version of this popular guide.
This edition now includes coverage of Lafayette and Vernon counties, plus new information on more trails, including ones at Avoca Prairie Savanna State Natural Area, Wildcat Mountain State Park, and Blackhawk Lake Recreational Area. Author Bob Crawford has also revised eleven trail maps in nine counties and updated material throughout the book, which now describes more than 150 trails at more than sixty locations.
These trails wind across southern Wisconsin—into forests and along shores, over glacial formations and around Native American earthworks—and showcase some of the most beautiful and interesting walking trails in the nation. Walking Trails of Southern Wisconsin retains its handy, pocket-sized format plus all the other features that made the first edition so successful:
    • details about routes and terrain plus geographical, biological, or historical features of interest
    • regulations including open days and hours, and rules regarding dogs, trail bikes, cross-country skiing, and other activities
    • information about available restrooms, drinking water, nature centers, and other facilities at the site
    • a description assessing degree of difficulty—slope, width, maintenance, and other such factors—and a helpful rating of “walkability” on a scale from 1 to 5
Crawford also provides information about nearby parks, preserves, glacial formations, historical sites, tourist attractions, and other points of interest for those who want to turn a hike into a day trip or weekend outing. Staying fit was never so easy nor so much fun.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for Wisconsin outdoor enthusiasts........2000-07-03

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Bob Crawford's Walking Trails Of Southern Wisconsin includes walking trails in 17 southern Wisconsin counties. This popular and practical guide offers new maps for Lafayette and Vernon counties, plus additional trail maps for Black Hawk (in the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway), Wildcat Mountain State Park, and Blackhawk Lake Recreational Area. More than 150 trails at more than sixty locations are showcased and include forest, shoreline, glacial formation, and Native American earthwork based walks. With its handy, pocket-sized format, Walking Trails Of Southern Wisconsin details routes and terrain (including geographical, biological, and historical features of interest); regulations and rules regarding hours, dogs, trail bikes, cross-country skiing, and other activities; information about restrooms, drinking water, nature centers, and other site facilities; and descriptions assessing degree of difficulty (slope, width, maintenance, etc.). Also very highly recommended is Bob Crawford's "user friendly" companion guide, Walking Trails Of Eastern And Central Wisconsin.

3 out of 5 stars I am an avid hiker who lives in Southern Wisconsin...........2000-06-13

and I bought this book three weeks ago. I have used the book as a guide for three straight weekend hikes. It was worthwhile in that it gave some good ideas for new places to go, but the trail maps were not accurate for any of the three hikes we took. The distance was off in two cases, and the trails had changed in the third. With some updates of the trail maps, I would give this book four stars. It was descriptive, and gave good directions to get to each hiking spot. Well worth the price.

      Book Description

Wisconsin is a premier backpacking state, with outstanding opportunities for weekend trips. With its Great Lakes and river boundaries, national and state parks and forests, and stunning geological diversity, it offers a variety of experiences for both novice and experienced backpackers. In Backpacking Wisconsin Jack and Liz Hailman, drawing on years of personal experience, provide first-hand information for trails in every corner of the state-from the wooded Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, inhabited by whitetailed deer and black bears, to picturesque Newport State Park in Door County, set upon Silurian-age limestone laid down over 100 million years ago.

For each backpacking site you'll find:
*information on entrance fees and permits, campsites, & contact sources
      *directions to the location
*detailed trail maps with keys that pinpoint roads, parking, trail shelters, water supplies, outhouses
*ratings for trails, scenery, quiet, solitude, and interest
*background information on history, geology, and terrain
*trail notes describing trees, shrubs, wildflowers, birds, and animals you may encounter.

Backpacking Wisconsin also provides an overview of the backpacking experience, tips for the beginner and the expert, hints on how to choose equipment (boots, packs, tents, sleeping bags, rain gear, stoves), notes on troublesome plants and animals, a list of state areas that no longer offer backpacking, schedules of fees, a checklist for backpacks, and a list of trail, outdoor, and conservation organizations. For those hesitant to venture deep into wilderness, the Hailmans spotlight "quasi-backpacking" sites. All you have to do is pick a trail!

"A user-friendly guidebook! I felt I was sitting at a kitchen table listening to the authors tell detailed stories of trips they have taken and offering advice on how I could share their experiences."-Greg Marr, editor of Silent Sports

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Really good, exactly the info I couldn't find anywhere else........2003-05-06

This is a great book. I am into backpacking but never recieved good info about it in our state (I choose to save it for vacations out west - not anymore). I really like how the authors put the book together with ratings of trails and persoanl experience. Excellenet organization. Unlike the other reviewer I think the personal accounts are much needed as they help describe exactly what it was like when the authors were there. This is exactly what Wisconsin backpackers need. I didn't want to make the mistake of going backpacking in Wisconsin and having it turn into something that was too civilized. This book describes what kinds of things are at the campsites or if campsites exist at all(then one must wilderness camp--my favorite). It acts as a guide as to which places will better suite your particular taste for backpacking so you aren't wasteing your whole summer trying to find good places to go.

      1 out of 5 stars I wish I had bought a Falcon Guide.......2002-06-03

I do not like this book at all. Maybe it is because I am used to using Falcon Guides, but when I purchase a hiking or backpacking trail guide I expect good trail narratives, not a description of the author's hiking experience. I don't care what time they got into camp or what they had for dinner. In a backpacking book I expect some description of water availability from streams, lakes, etc. In this book the authors only describe whether or not public water is available at campsites. Since I have not found this book to be of much use in planning a backpacking trip to Wisconsin, I am now purchasing the Hiking Wisconsin Falcon Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if your'e planning on backpacking in Wisconsin.......2001-03-09

This is a pretty darn good book. I live in Milwaukee and am pretty familiar with most of the places described. The info is accurate, and there's enough of it. A lot of good maps, too. The authors have divided the state into 5 backpacking regions and in each region they've listed many of the best backpacking parks and trails. It's satisfying to know that the authors have themselves backpacked most of the areas they describe. A lot of good stuff in this book, including general backpacking "how-to" info in the first part, but... There is one piece of advice that I think is poorly thought out. On page 25, their advice is to not bring a cell phone into the woods and that it is of little potential help. They talk of the subject in somewhat unrealistic terms, and only of getting lost in the woods and completely ignore other potential problems such as a medical emergency. As an experienced backpacker, I can tell you as they do... DON'T go into the woods if you aren't prepared for emergency and what to do if you get lost, but, if things do go bad and you have a cell phone with you (especially one of those really small, lightweight ones with a wide coverage area) you could be darn glad you brought it. Keep it turned off, use it only in emergencies and pray that it sends and receives OK from your location. This is the biggest potential problem with cell phones in an emergency, but coverage is getting better and technology is giving us more reliability. Their advice should have been (as it is in many other backpacking articles)...Bring a cell phone (with a fresh battery) if you want to, but understand that it is NOT guaranteed to work, keep it turned off except ONLY for emergencies and it is NO SUBSTITUTE for knowledge and smart preperation. Having said that (it's a small point that I made a big deal of)... DO buy this book if your'e looking at a backpacking trip in this wonderful state.

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended for hikers & campers.......2001-01-31

Wonderfully illustrated throughout with maps and b/w photos, Backpacking Wisconsin is a comprehensive guide and informative overview to the best Wisconsin has to offer the outdoor enthusiast and hiker. Backpacking Wisconsin is an indispensable, success enhancing, outdoor recreation and travel guide. Enthusiastically recommended for hikers, campers, bird watchers, and nature lovers.
