5 out of 5 stars Inventing the Grand Canyon.......2006-02-08

Imagine being able to invent one of the great natural wonders of the world. This was practically the opportunity of the first park rangers to live at the canyon. Famous explorers and scientists had come and gone from the Grand Canyon and written their reports, but they seldomed stayed there any length of time. The rangers who came with the establishment of Grand Canyon National Park in 1919 were the first naturalists to live their lives there, and there was still plenty to explore, plenty of unknown geology, biology, and botany. Within a few years after 1919 these rangers were writing down their discoveries and experiences at the canyon, basically figuring out what this place was all about and how visitors could best experience it. 1919 was also much closer to the age of Humboldt and Muir, when natural historians were adventurers and heroes and seers, expected to speak both science and poetry. The "notes" in this book are the record of those first park naturalists as they come to terms with a great natural wonder, and they are also notes in the sense of musical notes, a song of celebration.

5 out of 5 stars The best of Grand Canyon Nature Notes 1926-1935.......2000-10-23

If you love the Grand Canyon, you will be delighted with this selection of naturalists articles written in the first half of the past century (!). Easy to read, most of the writing consisting of articles of a few lines to a few pages, you can open the book anywhere and transport yourself on or below the rim, at a time when a lot fewer tourists visited the canyon. The book is divided in three parts, Earth sciences (geology, river, sky and seasons), Life science (flora, fish, birds, mammals,) and Human history (archaeology, ethnobotany and history). Nice little B&W drawings throughout the book, this is a very good complement to a visit to the Grand Canyon or to any coffee table picture book on the Grand Canyon usually thin on writing.

Book Description

"I've learned it takes heart to come out a winner every time, whether you win or lose."

-- Michael Jordan

Jonathan wants to win more than anything. But the Badgers haven't seen much of that lately. For Jonathan, the only good thing about the baseball season is being on the same team as his best friend, Michael. Jonathan wants to believe in himself and his team, but it's getting harder to do.

Then when Michael's uncle Jack tells the boys about his golden rules of baseball, Jonathan is confused. What could Uncle Jack mean -- there is more to a good game than winning or losing?

Deloris and Roslyn M. Jordan, mother and sister of basketball superstar Michael Jordan, tell a family story of personal best, friendship, and teamwork that will inspire. Kadir Nelson's radiant illustrations illuminate this story of what it really means to be a champion.

I am a school teacher in MA. I noticed this book was on the summer school reading list for students entering the third grade, so I decided to read it. I am not a fan of books written by celebrities or relatives of celebrities. If Deloris Jordan was not Michael Jordan's mother it never would have been published. The plot and dialogue are hackneyed.

My 5 year old loves baseball. So this book was the perfect book for him. The illustrations were great, and the story was great. The golden rules are wonderful, and are a great starting poing in applying them outside of baseball. He reads this book frequently. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes look at MJ and the bulls.......2007-08-21

The book shows just how tough life in the NBA can be, especially when you have a guy like MJ, a selfish ball-hog and control freak. After reading the book, any liking I had for MJ has since vanished. Behind the scenes, the guy is selfish, narcisistic, hyper-competitive person who must win at EVERYTHING he does, and have things HIS way all the time. He even went so far as to never lift weights in the same weight room as the team for fear that one of the players might be able to lift more weight than him. Boo hoo! Imagine that Michael! There might be someone actually stronger than you.

1 out of 5 stars Totally unbelieviBULL.......2007-08-15

I was truly disgusted with this book. From the onset I read so many falsehoods I thought I was reading the national enquirer. As someone who has followed Michael Jordan throughtout his career I understand that this rag was wrote by someone with an awful agenda.Sam Smith is the first 300 pound white male golddigger I have ever heard of.I was amused at how he put Jordan's thought down like he was a mindreader as well as a hack writer. He actually praised Ed Neely (clearly a good friend or relative)like he was a good player.Neely didn't even average 6 minutes a game but was so valuable in Sammie Smith's mind.Smith even wrote that he was the smartest player on the team(was he good at scrabble or something?Because he wasn't smart enough to get more playing times). He said Bill Cartwright had the best footwork on the teams lol.I guess thats why the refs called him for the most travel calls on the team.John Paxson was also a favorite of his so much in fact he said that he was a good defensive player lol.Shall I believe Sam or my lying eyes.Sam said Horace Grant hated to be a second fiddle to Michael Jordan but dashed to Orlando to play behind Shaq and Penny.I could go on and on about this trainwreck but I have spent enough time on this idiot. So if you are thinking about reading this book do something more interesting watch paint dry.

5 out of 5 stars Still a masterpiece long after its publication. .......2007-05-10

This is one of the great books that I had a hard time putting down. Sam Smith plays with our intrigue and wins out, enticing us to keep reading as we ask, "Did Isaiah Thomas really say that?" or "How did the Bulls stand together when at least half the team was demanding trades in 1991?"

We see them as if we were a part of the team.

*Hopson weeping after the 1991 title due to a fleeting feeling of comradely.
* Michael Jordan's off-the-court feud with Isaiah Thomas.
*Pippen demanding to be traded due to contract negotiations.
* Jerry "Crums" Krause being ridiculed publicly by Jordan and his brown-nosing cronies.
* Alliances forged through empathetic teammates who viewed the team's other pockets of faction with distrusting, and sometimes vengeful eyes.
* Cliff Levingston's constant butt-kissing of "His Airness".
* Horace Grant physically standing up to Jordan in practice and bragging about it later.
* Scottie Pippen's inward fear of Dennis Rodman.
* Phil Jackson's craving to buy a gun after a private meeting with a then-psychotic Scott Williams.
* The Pistons' mental control of B.J. Armstrong, Scottie Pippen, and others.
* Stacey King and Michael Jordan's verbal wars.
* Literal fist fights between certain players in practice.
* Jordan's constant campaign to assume control of the team's decision-making processes and how Phil Jackson combated his egocentric, and often enigmatic star.

A priviledged look into the makings of one of sports' greatest teams ever, and a eye-opening look into the makings of sports' greatest hero.

Synopsis: This book is about the 1992-93 Chicago Bulls Championship Team. It includes qoutes form the Bulls's general management and the teammates. The book takes you through the championship season. It also tells about Michael Jordan yelling at coaches and teammates.
Critic: This book is good because it shows that Michael isn't as clean cut as he seems. The author does a great job of getting both sides of the story. He talk about what Michael said and then what the teammates have to say. He does a great job of describing all the events in the book. I recommend this book for huge Michael Jordan fans everywhere! This book is great for people that love reading about him and all his success.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting in-depth look........2006-03-16

Sam Smith does a very good job describing how the personalities clash on this team. Jordan is revealed as an extremely intense individualist in a team sport, who is quick to identify and pounce on weaknesses in opponents, and more often, teammates. I enjoyed this book as a chance to get a better perspective on a team at the beginning of a historic run of championships. This book also illuminates the fact that it isn't necessarily chemistry that leads to championships, but balance. It's also interesting to see Phil Jackson lay out the nuances of the triangle offense with quotes by Native Americans and Rudyard Kipling. All in all, a great look at the construction and molding of a collection of strong personalities into a functional, cohesive championship team.

1 out of 5 stars Michael Ball.......2003-02-20

Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen are on a 2 on 1 fast break. Jordan with the ball lays it high off of the glass. Pippen slams it home for two points. I read The Jordan Rules by Sam Smith. This is a book about the Chicago Bulls in the 1991-1992 NBA season. I did not think this was a very good book. It only had a few good details but there were not enough to keep you interested. Another bad thing about this is its long chapters. The chapters just seemed like they would take forever to read. Some of the book didn't even talk about Jordan. It would talk about his teammates like Horace Grant, Bill Cartwright, and BJ Armstrong. They were always complaining about playing time and not ever getting the ball because Michael was a ball hog and the only other person he would pass the ball to was Scottie Pippen. Horace Grant and Bill Cartwright gave it the name Michael Ball. Jordan always had special rules. Like on road trips he was allowed to bring two of his best friends with him so that way he would feel comfortable. No one else on the team was even allowed to bring family members. At the end of the book the Bulls won the NBA Championship. If I were you I would not waste my money in buying this book because that would be a waste of money. There were not enough details and the chapters were way to long. Don't go wasting your time or money in reading or buying this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good book on the greatest basketball player ever........1999-05-12

I would recomend this book because it shows the private life of Micheal Jordan and the personal problems micheal went through. The book shows how Micheal Jordan built the Chicago Bulls franchise. How he turned a losing team to the most winning team of the ninty's.

Jordan Roter's CAMP RULES teens of teen 'It' girl Logan, who is spending her final summer as the exclusive Bank One's Alpha Camper until interloper Penny arrives to upstage her. Both of them want Penny to go home - but when they join forces to get her kicked out, an unexpected friendship evolves in this fun story of camp craziness.

4 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-05-31

Camp really does rule if you've been going to the same one for eight years and now you're the queen bee, but when your parents decide to send you to camp for the first time when you're sixteen, it's a nightmare.

      Unfortunately, it's Penny's nightmare.

Not only is she forced into camp, but it's the same camp that the local "It Girl" adores. Logan is extremely unhappy about Penny crashing her party. More than anything, Penny wants to go home, so when Logan demands Penny leaves, she agrees. Logan coerces Penny into a game of rule-breaking to make sure she leaves camp. Penny begins to settle in, even though she's not used to finding herself in trouble. She likes the other girls in the cabin and she likes her new daredevil self. She certainly doesn't want to leave camp, but Logan's made it pretty clear that either she'll get kicked out on her own or Logan will force her out.

CAMP RULES asks the question, "what if the rules of high school were different and you could be friends with anyone regardless of their reputation?"

Relive the carefree days of camp and read this book with a side of s'mores!

5 out of 5 stars Certainly a book worth writing home about.......2007-05-19

Penny Moore went to bed a fifteen-year-old, and woke-up a sixteen-year-old. Technically, the girl is no longer a child. She finally has the freedom to do more "adult" things. Like drive a car. Or maybe even get a tattoo. But even with her new grown-up attitude, Penny refuses to dispose of her Hello Kitty nightshirt. The same one she's been wearing since 1998, even though it only comes up to her waist. But don't put her on the fashion-don't list just yet. The one thing she's craving are a pair of Seven jeans to ring in her Sweet Sixteen. The jeans retail for a whopping $150, but Penny is convinced that she'll be the lucky reciprocate of them, considering her parents know how much they mean to her. Unfortunately, when she lifts the lid off her gift, the only thing she sees is a collared t-shirt with the letters FLC on it. Penny couldn't be more confused, until her parents reveal that they've given her an all-expenses paid trip to Fern Lake Camp, where she'll be spending eight glorious weeks surrounded by girls she'll be able to bond with. Sure, Penny was dying to attend sleepaway camp - back when she was eight - and can't believe that her parents wasted their hard-earned money on something as trivial as camp, especially when it's the last thing Penny wanted for her Sweet Sixteen. But, seeing the disappointment on her parents faces, Penny gives them an ultimatum. She'll attend Fern Lake for four weeks, then, when Visitors' Day arrives, if she totally hates her summer set-up, she can leave early, and spend the rest of the summer moping around, studying for the SAT's, and searching for a job that will earn her some cold, hard cash. But before Penny even boards the plane that will whisk her away from her Bronx apartment, and deposit her in the wilds of Maine, she realizes that she's made the biggest mistake of her life. For none other than Logan Worthe, Manhattan's It Girl, and the ruler of Penny's school - Lakefield Academy. Logan is known for taking charge of every situation, and keeping all eyes on her, no matter what; which is exactly what Logan does when she arrives at LaGuardia Airport. Penny notes that the girl is Queen of Fern Lake, as well as high school, and plans on avoiding her at all costs - if possible. Unfortunately, that's the last thing Penny is able to accomplish, for she's placed in Bunk One - Logan's bunk - almost instantaneously - and is forced to contend with non-stop cheering, and inane conversations that make her feel as if she's losing IQ points. Logan can sense that Penny despises Fern Lake, and makes a pact with her to get her kicked out before Visitors' Day. Penny is only too happy to comply, figuring she'll be better off at home. And Logan couldn't be happier with the arrangement. After all, she refuses to have a new girl - especially one who knows her reputation from high school - ruin her last summer ever at Fern Lake. But as Penny begins to open herself up to the girls surrounding her, and the fresh outdoors, she begins to see just why Logan is so possessive of Fern Lake, and realizes that she, too, wants to stick around for the summer. But Logan refuses to break their pact, and adds in a little blackmail to ensure that Penny is forced to disappear - STAT!

With her debut novel GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT Jordan Roter proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with within the world of YA literature, by bringing three very important items to the forefront: original ideas, well-developed characters, and a fun plot that made the reader feel as if she - or he - were a part of the story. With CAMP RULES, Roter manages to secure that title, by, once again, penning a novel full of original, fun ideas that speak to the reader; while, at the same time, creating a bevy of characters, whose unique personalities feed off one another, creating an ideal group of unlikely friends. Mixing part Cecily von Ziegesar's IT GIRL, part Melissa J. Morgan's CAMP CONFIDENTIAL, with a splash of the Disney Channel reality show BUG JUICE thrown in for good measure, Roter's CAMP RULES is a novel that is sure to add a little sizzle to your summer. Penny Moore is a wallflower, just looking to bloom into a princess who worries more about studying vocab words for the SAT's, than boys, looking good, and having fun. Penny blends together two different age categories by embracing her inner child - by refusing to get rid of her Hello Kitty nightshirt - and her looming young adulthood. Her determination to remove herself from camp before she has even fully immersed herself within the sleepaway life, and her feelings of being ignored by those around her are quite reminiscent of Sam's character in GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT. Logan, on the other hand, is very similar to the character of Kate in GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT, considering, from the outside, she looks like a girl who has everything - perfect clothes, hair, make-up, tons of money, all the boys - yet she's still not happy because she's forced to contend with absentee parents who hardly know she exists. Both girls present such raw emotion, that borders on vulnerability, for the reader, instantly making it hard to dislike either one of them - no matter how downright nasty their antics get. It doesn't hurt matters any that both Penny and Logan are surrounded by a handful of delightful, Bunk One girls who each have their own, slightly bizarre personalities that make them stand out from the crowd and make them memorable long after the last page is turned. From the food-loving, yet oft-times clueless, Gabby; to the nature-adoring Willow. And Tess, a tennis star looking to leave behind her racket and embrace her true passion, art; to the boy-crazy Missy, and the slightly-sarcastic, yet always fun, Jade. But I can't fail to mention my personal favorite character, Morgan. A precocious - yet utterly adorable nine-year-old - with a penchant for falling down, who happens to be harboring a heart of gold. While many authors bring various characters to the forefront, yet fail to differentiate them in any way, or give them personalities of their own, Roter succeeds in doing just that, making each girl seem like one of your very own pals. As someone who has never attended summer camp, Roter has reinstated my desire to catch the closest bus, and head off for the summer of a lifetime. Her sleepaway expertise makes summer camp sound like the most amazing experience. And, after reading this book, I'm sure camps across the nation will see quite a jump in the numbers of wannabe campers! Certainly a book worth writing home about.

While I have not read the book, I believe the main "secret" that should be revealed is the fact that Dr. Weiss surrendered his license to practice medicine in the state of California on 10/31/05 after being accused by the Medical Board of two offenses of sexual abuse of patients. As these are public documents, you can read the details for yourself here:

        (...)
by entering first and last name and searching.

However, be forewarned that the formal accusation by the Board is quite graphic.

"Our Secret Rules" deals with the secret rules that regulate an individual's behavior. All of us know about our conscious, obvious rules and how these affect our behavior. But what about those other rules, the ones we hold deep down inside that are not so obvious but still affect our behavior. Jordan Weiss takes us on a trip to discover the rules we hold and how those rules affect us. He does this by setting up a scenario, asking a question about it, and then asking us to choose one of three answers to the question. Each of the three answers are then explained so you can understand the subconscious rules that are related to the answer you chose.

Jordan Weiss, MD takes on several important categories in his analysis. The first area to be discussed is Money, then Work and Career, then Gender Roles, Power and Control, Health, Personal Expression, Friendship, Spirituality, Sex, and Love. Some of the scenarios will present easy answers for the reader and others will present more difficult questions to answer, but answer them you must if you want to understand the internal rules that control your behavior.

The one thing that I did not like was that some of the scenarios don't offer enough information to choose one of the answers. For example, in the Gender Roles area there is a scenario that goes like this: "You serve in the military and are presently in combat. Your safety depends on the courage and skill of your superiors. An error in judgment could be fatal to one or more members of your squad. Your direct superior, who is a woman, commands a specific course of action. One of your team members - a man who is a highly experienced fighter - disagrees and refuses to comply. Who do you follow?" The answer choices are: "A) I trust my superior and I will obey her commands, B) I don't have confidence in my commanding officer; I feel better going with the man's opinion, or C) I have a tendency to trust the man's opinion, but to avoid court-martial, I will do what I am told." There is simply not enough information to make any kind of informed opinion. What is her experience level with actual combat? Why does the other experienced fighter have a problem with the command? Is his argument reasonable? Is her reason for the command reasonable? Does he not want to comply because he has a problem with her being in command or is there a legitimate reason? Was she ordered to issue her command from someone above her who is sitting safely elsewhere not even familiar with the current situation? There are so many possibilities that make a difference as to whether I would choose A or B that it is hard to choose either. Further information could move the decision solidly from one to the other. While he raises some very good scenarios and they can point to very good information about yourself, they often are not simple enough to be reduce to three possible answers. Of course, you pick the best that you can of the three and read all the explanations and perhaps it still sheds some light on your secret rules.

"Our Secret Rules" is a recommended read for those who want to examine their personal rules and how they affect their actions. The scenarios and choices, while not exhaustive, are at least illustrative of various internal rules. If you can't figure out which answer you would choose you can at least examine the underlying issues in the explanations.

For this book I would suggest that you enjoy the journey of discovery, but try not to overanalyze things too much as I often have a tendency to do (which I am sure is the result of some sort of other internal rule that I have).
