Before consulting with customer service, it's always a good idea to read the manual. Psychiatrist John Ratey has condensed years of research on one of the most intimidating yet ubiquitous pieces of hardware in the world into the ever-handy User's Guide to the Brain. More intellectually stimulating than day-to-day practical, the Guide uses tales from Ratey's practice and other clinical venues, tidbits from neuroscientific research, and plain common sense to suggest how the brain develops and manifests personality and behavior. With section titles like "Free Will and the Anterior Cingulate Gyrus," many readers will feel intimidated, but Ratey is careful to direct his explanations to all--even those without a PhD in neuroanatomy. His interesting four-theater theory of mental function is the most directly practical section of the book, incorporating the author's years of experience with patients into a sensible framework that readers can use to better tune their own systems. Describing the changing of the guard from psychoanalysis to a more biological paradigm, Ratey writes:
Neuroscientists have, in a sense, simply taken over the elite, almost clerical office once held by analysts. The language used to describe the brain is, if anything, more opaque than any of the old psychoanalytic terminology, which was itself so obscure that only trained professionals could wade through the literature. Most people never even bother to learn such terminology, deeming that, like the language of the computer scientists of the early 1970s, it is better left to the nerds.
Determined to help us overcome our sense of helplessness in matters cranial, Ratey has shown that we can understand ourselves better and can learn quite a bit from the nerds. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
John Ratey, bestselling author and clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, here lucidly explains the human brain’s workings, and paves the way for a better understanding of how the brain affects who we are. Ratey provides insight into the basic structure and chemistry of the brain, and demonstrates how its systems shape our perceptions, emotions, and behavior. By giving us a greater understanding of how the brain responds to the guidance of its user, he provides us with knowledge that can enable us to improve our lives.
In
A User’s Guide to the Brain, Ratey clearly and succinctly surveys what scientists now know about the brain and how we use it. He looks at the brain as a malleable organ capable of improvement and change, like any muscle, and examines the way specific motor functions might be applied to overcome neural disorders ranging from everyday shyness to autism. Drawing on examples from his practice and from everyday life, Ratey illustrates that the most important lesson we can learn about our brains is how to use them to their maximum potential.
Download Description
Bringing order and relevance to the cascade of recent brain-search findings, the author makes clear how the brain responds to the guidance of the user.

awesome!.......2007-08-29
this book is totally awesome, I've read many books about the brain as I work in a rehab hospital and this is by far the most down to earth book I've read, it explains everything well however, and uses examples of real life people to put it in perspective
DO NOT BUY..........2007-05-27
This book is full of ignorance. Read anything but what this manipulative author puts forth in his books.
Dr. Ratey is Under Rated.......2006-06-09
This co-author of Dr. Edward Hallowell's book is under rated to say the least. This book written in every day language explains the workings of the brain that are useful to the lay-person and professional alike. Dr. Ratey explains his points with helpful analogies and illustrations. . Written for audiences intermediate-level of information, yet can be comprehended by even the novice. This book provides a much needed balance to information on the workings of the human mind.
A must.......2006-04-20
This books explains with simple words things we all should know, since knowing them would allow us to live a more productive and enjoyable life.
The real-life examples are very illustrating.
Little cons: illustrations are very technical, and sometimes the text gets hard to read due to the increase in the rate of technical words -referring to brain's parts- per paragraph.
The cons are so little that they do not affect the overall quality of the book.
Highly recommended even if you are not interested in how the brain works.
Excellent material.......2006-03-20
This is by far one of the best books i have read in my life, it explains everything so easy that you actually understand what is going on inside your head. it has many real cases that show the application of what he just told you. if you are thinking to buy this book, dont think, just buy it.

Gormley does it again!.......2006-06-13
I was impressed enough when Gormley came out a landmark book on DHA in 1999, but was equally impressed when he came out with this book, the most-concise, best-researched, most practical and powerful consumer book on brain-boosting I have ever read--and there are a number out at this point. Bravo!
Excellent Book.......2005-12-31
The authors do a superb job of identifying the how to get the most from your mind. Their suggestions are practical and effective.
I would only caution people to be very careful where you source the recommended supplements. A supplement retailer with more than 4-5 suppliers cannot keep up with the latest innovations. Snake-oil abounds. RelentlessImprovement.com is fast, professional, and offers only pharmaceutical quality fully tested supplements.
Be the best you can be, let this book help you.
interesting read, great advice.......2004-05-12
I bought this book because I've been having a few senior moments (even though I'm not a senior!) I really liked it because it wasn't too technical and was easy to read. I like that the authors make recomendations for things to take and what they are. I recomend this book to anyone looking to boost their memory!

A user's guide to the brain.......2006-05-25
Excellent debating reference tool to help people appreciate WHY they see the world as they do & why most others see it differently! (Perception). Also very useful as recommended reading for Careers Counselled candidates who have become lost in the jobs wilderness through redundancy, graduating with a degree with no market force, or just at a careers crossroads & have lost all professional motivation. Perception is everything to us because it greatly influences everything we "see" & therefore, everything we end up doing as a response. This publication explains that key issue very well.

Book Description
Louise Wagenknecht grew up in one of the West’s last company lumber towns, a small community called Hilt on the California-Oregon border. There she witnessed the dying years of a unique way of life, the tail-end of the 1950s lumber boom that would devastate the ancient old-growth forests of the Klamath Mountains as well as the people of Hilt, whose lives were inextricably tied to the company lumber mill. White Poplar, Black Locust is the story of that transformation, but it is also something more—a noteworthy addition to the literature of place, and a sensitive and richly textured family memoir. As Wagenknecht unravels the threads that still bind her to both Hilt’s history and her own, unforgettable characters emerge, and what should have been the happy ending to this story, the marriage of her divorced mother to a forester working for the Fruit Growers Supply Company, becomes instead the end of childhood innocence, foretelling the demise of the mill and the end of Hilt itself.
Expertly weaving memoir and history against the backdrop of a powerful yet little-known landscape, White Poplar, Black Locust is an immensely readable narrative of pain, loss, and ultimate survival.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful and courageous memoir!.......2007-03-26
White Poplar, Black Locust is about the joys and sorrows of growing up in a small town in the `50s, but it's no Leave It to Beaver or Happy Days. Louise grew up in an isolated company logging town on the California-Oregon border, in many ways a paradise for kids. But it wasn't all white poplar, her childhood had its thorny locust side as well. One marvels at the resiliency of the human spirit in memoirs like Jeanette Wall's Glass Castle and Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes. This spirit is very much in evidence in White Poplar, Black Locust, as is the same tone of detached and loving acceptance of circumstances and parents who are not as good as they could be. Wonderfully written, I loved this book from the first sentence to the last, and many times in the midst, I stopped just to marvel at a particularly apt phrase or to take in the deep honesty of the author.
beautiful memior of gowning up in a company town.......2004-09-19
I thought this was a phoenominal book. Louise weaves this memior of her childhood in a company logging town integrating social insight with the logging haydays of the 1950's and 1960's. Well researched and poignant. My copy was devoured by fellow employees while I was on vacation...

From the supplier: The black locust is one of the most popular trees used in woodworking. This tree species belongs to the family Leguminosae and is known by a number of names, including false acacia and pea flower. Although most often used as fence post or stakes, its straight grain makes it an attractive furniture. Other properties that make it ideal for furniture and cabinetry include strength, hardness, durability and high shock resistance. The ease with which black locusts can be transplanted also adds to its value.

Description:
Litterfall production, the amount of organic matter on the forest floor, and litter decomposition rates were studied in an exotic nitrogen (N)-fixing black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) plantation and an indigenous non-N-fixing oak (Quercus liaotungensis) forest near Yan'an, on the Loess Plateau, China. The chemical composition of litterfall and soil was also examined. Litterfall production was similar in the two forests; however, the amount of N in litterfall was greater in the black locust plantation than in the oak forest because of the high N concentration of black locust leaves. The decomposition rate of black locust leaves was higher than that of oak leaves, most likely because of the higher N content of black locust leaves. These results suggested that N cycling was greater and faster in the black locust plantation than in the oak forest. However, faster decomposition caused the disappearance of the organic layer from the forest floor in the black locust plantation. Furthermore, despite greater N cycling in the black locust plantation, the soil N content was lower than in the oak forest. Our results indicated that the black locust plantation might be more susceptible to soil erosion than the oak forest. In addition, our study suggested that the black locust plantation had advantages in short-term N uptake, growth, and N cycling; however, it had disadvantages in soil development and regeneration and sustainable land management.

Description:
The forage quality of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.), honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos L.), bastard indigo (Amorpha fruticosa L.) and white mulberry (Morus alba L.), as well as of the associated herbaceous vegetation, was studied in a silvopastoral system. The study was conducted in a semi-arid grassland with poor sandy soil in northern Greece. Short-duration grazing (28sheep/ha for 7 days) was repeated twice during the summer period (early July and late August) of 1992, 1993 and 1994. Crude protein content of foliage was maintained at relatively higher levels when plants were grazed compared to control, while neutral and acid detergent fibre content decreased significantly. Crude protein content of black locust and bastard indigo foliage was significantly higher compared to that of honey locust and white mulberry. However, white mulberry presented the highest in vitro digestibility among the four species tested. There was a tendency towards increased in vitro digestibility of the grazed plants' foliage, compared to that of the control (56% and 53.1%, respectively). In addition, short-duration summer grazing resulted in a small increase in the nutritive value and the in vitro digestibility of the associated herbaceous vegetation.

Description:
We studied the field response of Robinia pseudoacacia L. to light, total soil nitrogen, available soil phosphorus and soil pH. Results indicated that there was very strong clonal integration between mother and daughter ramets. Mother ramets can provide nitrogen and phosphorus to daughter ramets sufficient for their continued growth through strong clonal integration, but cannot provide enough photosynthate. With clonal integration, soil nitrogen and phosphorus availability had no effect on biomass allocation to roots, number of ramets and length of connection roots. Biomass allocation to roots increased markedly and responded to nitrogen and phosphorus availability, when the connections were severed. Light had a significant effect on the percent of biomass allocation to leaves and number of ramets, but no effect on the length of connection roots. Daughter ramets allocated more resources to leaves, and clones placed more daughter ramets in high light patches than in low light patches. Soil pH had a significant effect on ramet number and connection root length. Clones concentrated in alkaline patches and escaped from acid patches through selective placement of daughter ramets and changing the length of connection roots. We suggest that the clonal integration may be very strong and provide sufficient soil resources to daughter ramets, then affect the daughter ramets' morphology and placement, if the size of a specific ramet is significantly larger than the other ramets in an arbor clone.

Description:
Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was introduced to South Korea from North America in the 19th Century and was heavily used in the 1960s for reforestation of denuded mountains after the extensive deforestation during the Japanese occupation periods and the Korean War. Nationwide distribution of black locust tended to positively correlate with human population size and/or density of the administrative districts considered. Results from field survey on the representative vegetation types, Quercus acutissima and Q. mongolica communities in lowland and upland, respectively, show that black locust have invaded other vegetation beyond originally planted zones in lowland but not the upland vegetation. Black locust occurs from the bases to summits of mountains in the urban centers, whereas its range is restricted to mountain bases in urban outskirts and rural areas. Although native oaks (Quercus spp.) are usually succeeding black locust colonies, changes to native vegetation are often interrupted by frequent disturbance by human activities, as evident from persistent sprouts and expansions of black locust suckers in the disturbed areas, such as urban center and rural areas. Responses of the black locust plantation in terms of stand dynamics to different disturbance intensities also reflected such trends. Our results suggest a correlation between disturbance regimes and occurrence of black locusts. We recommend incorporating this correlation to the management plan for control of black locust.
