Why don't zebras get ulcers--or heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases--when people do? In a fascinating look at the science of stress, biologist Robert Sapolsky presents an intriguing case, that people develop such diseases partly because our bodies aren't designed for the constant stresses of a modern-day life--like sitting in daily traffic jams or growing up in poverty. Rather, they seem more built for the kind of short-term stress faced by a zebra--like outrunning a lion.
With wit, graceful writing, and a sprinkling of Far Side cartoons, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers makes understanding the science of stress an adventure in discovery. "This book is a primer about stress, stress-related disease, and the mechanisms of coping with stress. How is it that our bodies can adapt to some stressful emergencies, while other ones make us sick? Why are some of us especially vulnerable to stress-related diseases, and what does that have to do with our personalities?"
Sapolsky, a Stanford University neuroscientist, explores stress's role in heart disease, diabetes, growth retardation, memory loss, and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. He cites tantalizing studies of hyenas, baboons, and rodents, as well as of people of different cultures, to vividly make his points. And Sapolsky concludes with a hopeful chapter, titled "Managing Stress." Although he doesn't subscribe to the school of thought that hope cures all disease, Sapolsky highlights the studies that suggest we do have some control over stress-related ailments, based on how we perceive the stress and the kinds of social support we have.
Book Description
Combining cutting edge research with a healthy dose of humor and practical advice, Sapolsky explains how prolonged stress causes or intensifies mental afflictions.

Science even a Poly Sci Major can understand.......2007-09-28
Sapolsky presents a complex subject in language that a most people can understand, right along side the technical text. Thus, this old Poly Sci major finally understands the biology behind stress eating, even if I don't understand all the 12 syllable words in the next sentence. This is the way text books should be written. This is the way other books should be written -- understandable by people of many levels, not just the other specialists.
Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers .......2007-09-27
I agree with DR. Oliver Sachs who said on the back of the book, Dr/Professor Sapolsky is the best writer if physical science today. It is not for the faint of heart. He makes the subjects very clear, but it helps if you already have some science background because he brings you up to date on the current causes of the plagues of modern civilization (stress filled lives leading to the heart, cholesterol, diabetes, obesity etc. problems.
Awesome writing for a text book........2007-07-08
This book was chosen as the text book for a college course I took. It was awesomely written, very factual and easy to understand. And funny... Let me tell ya. I would gladly have read this for recreational purposes, but the fact that it was required to read it and it was so easy made it that much better.
Haven't read yet.......2007-06-27
Got the book quickly but am reading so many other things right now I haven't had a chance to read this one but I'm looking forward to it!
Fascinating.......2007-05-21
Prof. Sapolsky way of teaching makes one feel he is sitting in the classroom at Stanford. This book has the same ambiance.
Glad I own it.

Customer Reviews:
A very eye opening read.......2005-12-20
I picked up this book mostly out of curiosity. I was curious about small choices I could make that could make a difference. I went to school and I have a degree in environmental science, but I never applied it in my work. I have always tried to make good informed choices as a consumer. As I feel while I can not change the world, but as a block on informed consumers together we can make kinder choices for our environment.
I liked that this book is broken down into sections that apply to all ages. Home and Garden, Fashion and Beauty, Food and Entertaining, Recreation and Vacations, Animals in the Home, Children and Family, Business and Education, Health, Volunteering and Getting active. So you can see the topics that go well with all members in a family.
She gives very practical suggestions substitutes for products that we currently use. She gives recipes for replacements that are harder on the environment. She gives tips on how to keep your pets happy and content. I liked that she gave a wealth of ideas and substitutions for things we currently do. Some books give one suggestion that isn't always workable. I feel that through reading this book that I can make better and informed decisions as a consumer.
New insight.......2005-09-24
I have been a vegetarian all my life and have stopped using animal products (tested or material) for a decade or more. And still this book gave me ideas about plenty of more things to do to make my commitment more valuable to earth and me. One of the few 'How to' books that actually gets you started. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering becoming animal and earth friendly in their daily lives. I would also recommend Karen Logan's Clean House, Clean Planet for the people who are specifically looking for eco-friendly non-toxic house keeping tips
A Great Resource.......2005-08-22
My roommate bought me a copy of this book and it's really opened my eyes! Although I've been vegan for several years I didn't realize how much more I could be doing to help the world around me by making smarter choices. It's not only inspiring but a great resource book as well.
Some interesting info, but destined to be obsolete soon.......2005-05-06
This book shrugs off all shrill rhetoric and provides many resources for animal-free products and animal-friendly services. Where it falls short is in its reliance on pointing out particular companies and services rather than being prescriptive. While interest in green products is on the rise, its still a business model that has more risk than average. In short, there's a good chance that many of these companies will close up shop. A better approach would have been to spend more time on how consumers can evaluate products and services. What are the best-in-class standards PETA expects? A good first effort for tone, but I will wait for the next edition in hopes that it will have more than a list of references.
very good..........2005-05-05

Somewhat Useful, But also Out-dated and Junk Science.......2005-08-20
The author lists many useful (but obvious) items in protecting Earth (insularting your home, recycling, etc). Starts off talking about how Earth is in "peril" and might not be around in 10 years. Well, its been over 10 years and the doomsday scenarios haven't happened. That's what happens when you rely on emotional crusaders instead of reason and science. And we have also found that humans have little - if anything - to to with ozone depletion (don't hear much about anymore) or global warming. Since this book was written we pretty much banned CFC use and evil corporate giant McDonalds doesn't make the anti-Earth packaging this book talks about. So read with caution, read with a critical mind.

Book Description
Global warming, climate change, toxic waste, and more: it sometimes seems the environmental challenges we face are just too huge for individual actions to matter, but they're not-and here's the proof. True Green is based on the practical experience of Clean Up the World, a grassroots environmental movement that has inspired more than 40 million volunteers in over 100 countries to take action since 1993.
Whether you live in a city apartment, a suburban house, or a country farm, these simple, straightforward methods produce positive effects not just on our planet but on your pocketbook, too. For example, showering accounts for one-third of a typical home's water use, so making each shower slightly shorter results in real conservation over the long run. An average washing machine annually produces about 200 pounds of greenhouse gases, but a cold water wash can save about six pounds in emissions per cycle. Many electronic devices draw power even when "off," so actually unplugging them when not in use will save both money and electricity. Outdoors, mulching your garden can cut evaporation by as much as 70%, reducing the need to water often and conserving resources.
True Green explores six key areas where small changes can make a big difference: In the Home; In the Garden; At Work; Shopping; Travel; and In the Community. Dozens of illustrated spreads provide positive, practical, simple-to-implement tips and a summary of their environmental contribution; in addition, a reference guide to useful websites offers access to priceless additional information, global and local alike.

excellent, green resource.......2007-08-14
This is the best book for resource on teaching novice, and experts on everyday ways to contribute to a healthier planet!
You should not buy this book in its current format.......2007-07-20
I was sad to see the "go digital" review for this book get such a low rating in terms of its usefulness. I heard about this book on a podcast and before buying it here i went to look at it in Barnes and Noble. I skimmed through it in about seven minutes and left the store without it. As I left I thought to myself, "to buy this book, in its current format, would go against everything this book is trying to communicate." It is printed in a glossy color format with one idea per page. The 100 ideas (most of which are pretty easily found with a google search, i think) could have been summed up in a couple of pages (one, for example, is something like "use low flow fixtures"). This book seems to be aimed at the gift market, or maybe the coffee table book market...I cannot believe that anyone truly interested in living green would buy this book as it is presented. If the first step to living green TRULY is "reduce" then I recommend you skim through this book in the store or library and leave it there for someone else to read.
Has this book changed you too?.......2007-07-04
This must be one of the best books I've had a friend recommend to me. Plus, I discovered that this book has sold out in Australia, hence why I had to buy a copy here!
I found it to be a practical, simple and empowering guide to simple things I can do at home and work to reduce my impact on the environment. Let's hope that more people read it and put the ideas into practice.
Some of the suggestions are commonsense, but others I would not have thought of (the girl who sells me coffee at work now makes coffee for me in a mug I reuse). I'd be interested to hear from other people about their changed habits after reading this book.
Living Green!.......2007-05-23
I love this book. The pictures and information are excellent. Its an easy reference for small changes we can all make. There are lots of websites as well that provide even more information and tips. A great value for the money!
Great household 'how-to' guide.......2007-04-30
Replaced the lightbulbs and recycle your trash? Don't know what comes next in the fight for sustainability? This book is for you. Plenty of great ideas on practical things to do.

Book Description
This book is an important contribution to our understanding of everyday talk and its relation to broader social processes. Talk is unique and locally produced, crafted by particular social actors for the specific situation of its use. Yet the conduct of such talk is profoundly influenced by, and influential upon, social and cultural processes that occur beyond the temporal and spatial horizon of the occasion of the talk itself. Drawing on and criticizing social theory, Erickson explores the mutually reinforcing connections between the local conduct of talk and the general workings of society, economy, and history. The use of everyday examples enhances the bookrsquo;s appeal to a non-specialist as well as a specialist audience. Chapter-length vignettes illustrating talk in diverse institutional settings are provided. These include a family dinner table, an elementary school classroom, an academic advisory session in a community college, and a clinical medical coaching session in which an intern physician reviews the case of a patient with an experienced physician. Written in a clear and comprehensible way, the book reviews the key theoretical perspectives and conceptual frameworks in social theory and in the sociolinguistic study of talk which bear on these examples. It concludes with an argument against overly determinist accounts of talk as social action, in the interest of better construction of social theory and better empirical study of talk. Talk and Social Theory will be an essential text for students of sociolinguistics and the analysis of discourse in conversation. It will also be of interest to students in sociology, anthropology, social theory, education, applied linguistics, and anyone concerned with the nature and uses of language in social interaction.

Product Description
Home Economics Now celebrates the tradition of scholarship and research created by Dr. Eleanore Vaines during her thirty-year association with the School of Family and Nutritional Sciences at the University of British Columbia. Each of the nine chapters demonstrates the deep influence that Vaines scholarship, theorizing, and research has had on the next generation of scholars in home economics, human ecology, family studies, and education. The contributors highlight the recurring themes of Eleanore Vaines work: transforming practice through reflection guided by a moral vision, reimagining the world as our home, attending to the common good and the ecological values for living in harmony with our world, and uncovering the wholeness and sacredness of everyday life. This is a timely resource for students of home economics and home economics education at the university level, and for practising teachers and home economists, as well as scholars in the field.

Book Description
What were Socialist Spaces? The Eastern Bloc produced distinctive spaces, some of which were fashioned from ideological templates, such as the monumental parade grounds and Red Squares where communist leaders could receive tributes, or new factory cities with towering chimneys and glittering palaces of culture. But what of the grimy toilet in the communal apartment or the forlorn ruins left after the Second World War?This book explores the representation, meanings and uses of space in the socialist countries of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union between 1947 and 1991. The essays ntilde; written from different disciplinary perspectives ntilde; investigate the extent to which actual spaces conformed to the dominant political order in the region. Should, for instance, the creation of private spaces, such as the Russian dacha and the Czech chata, be understood as acts of appropriation in which lives were fashioned against the collective or, alternatively, as 'gifts' given by the State in return for quiescence? Whilst monuments and public spaces were designed to relay official ideology, one of the most notable features of the events that marked the end of the Bloc was the way that they became sites of dissent. Examining the myriad ways in which space was used and conceived within socialist society, this book makes an essential contribution to Eastern European and Soviet Studies and provides significant new angles on the factors that underpinned socialism's eventual downfall.

Book Description
In her award-winning examination of the nature of war, A Chorus of Stones, critically acclaimed author and feminist Susan Griffin showed new ways of thinking about society and war, about private and public lives. In The Eros of Everyday Life, she once again takes readers on a startling journey, showing the profound connections between religion and philosophy, science and nature, Western thought and the role of women, and the supremacy of abstract thought over the forces of life. Featuring the brilliant original title essay that is nothing less than an intellectual and emotional exploration of the nature of Western society itself, as well as Susan Griffin's best previously published essays of the past decade, The Eros of Everyday Life combines the beautiful lyricism and sensibility of a poet with the intellectual rigor of one of the finest and most original minds writing today.
Customer Reviews:
Susan for President!.......2002-03-16
I'm astounded that nobody here has reviewed this fine book, a series of essays that provide an exquisite blend of the public and the personal, all woven together in a fine, sincere prose so characteristic of this author.
Although the themes dealt with here are similar to those in her A CHORUS OF STONES, these are formatted more as straight-up essays with occasional dashes of literary experimentation. They are readable and revelatory in their interconnection of women's issues, feminism, ecology, history, and contemporary events, all held together around the central theme of Eros.
