5 out of 5 stars I had no problems reading this book........2007-07-26

This textbook was required for 2 of my Aeronautical Science courses in my pursuit for my Masters and I was more than happy to read it again. There is so much useful information in this text.

The author reveals the intricacies of the space environment as well as the hazards of going into space with great depth. If you are required to purchase this book; it's a keeper for reference purposes as well.

Happy reading.

For the course I'm taking, this text is an excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars Relating Space for the Masses!!.......2006-03-26

Mr. Jerry Jon Seller's book, "Understanding Space" is an amazing textbook about the technical aspects of space. The text is well written, the diagrams are easily understood, and the "tech-factor" for space geeks is acceptably high. It is no wonder that the United States Air Force has recommended "Understanding Space" as its baseline text concerning Technical aspects of space flight.

For those afraid of "rocket-science" level math, the book is written at a very easy level, using algebra, trigonometry, and bits of calculus covered with a whole BUNCH of physics. It is an excellent text for technical classes, and also easily readable for non-technical space classes. I've personally referenced this book in *EVERY* space-related class I've taken (4 undergrad and a *whole* bunch of graduate classes) - if you buy it, you will use it, I guarantee.

The only downside to this text lies in the fault of its users, not the author or publisher. This book was written to be the introduction to the Space Technology Library, a list covering more advanced topics in space. That said, the text is written at a high-school/undergraduate level for math and physics; yet the USAF has committed its "Certified Space Professionals" to using the text at their advanced level "Space 200" course. If you're taking (or teaching) space-related classes, understand the level of information you're needing - there *are* other space technical books (some by the same publisher) that will cover these topics in more depth (i.e. harder math and physics).

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Undergrad Aerospace Students.......2006-03-25

The Air Force Academy has hit a grand slam with this book, and Embry-Riddle was wise to include it in its curriculum. This book is the equivalent of my coursework in 3rd Class Physics at West Point, but it has a decidedly aerospace slant to it that makes it an important piece for any person with a need to understand space. The illustrations are of superb quality and add to the learning experience of more visual learners unlike the Introduction to Astrodynamics book done by the Air Force Academy years earlier.

2 out of 5 stars Good Info But Hard to Read.......2005-12-26

This book has a lot of good information, but it is very terse in its explanation and, therefore, fairly difficult to read beyond the first few chapters. The main advantage of this book is that its cheap.

5 out of 5 stars Really good; an excellent introduction to the field.......2005-05-31

This is really well-written. Although the introduction claims that the text is outdated, it still provides a great introduction to space dynamics, astrodynamics, and dynamics generally. There is an implied understanding in vector mathematics before beginning; the book has an overview of vector calculus, but I think the author assumes you already know it. I actually read this book before taking my undergraduate classes in engineering, and I referenced it many times when my own textbook wasn't as clear as this is. Thomson does use a lot of math, to back up everything he says, but he doesn't bog the text down like math books tend to do. I'm still using some of the math notation I picked up from this book, and my teachers hate it.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty good........2000-03-28

Not a bad introduction to dynamics, and space dynamics in general. The basic material was good. The more advanced material was a little unclear.

        Book Description

A good working knowledge of fluid mechanics and plasma physics is essential for the modern astrophysicist. This graduate textbook provides a clear, pedagogical introduction to these core subjects. Assuming an undergraduate background in physics, this book develops fluid mechanics and plasma physics from first principles. This book is unique because it presents neutral fluids and plasmas in a unified scheme, clearly indicating both their similarities and their differences. Also, both the macroscopic (continuum) and microscopic (particles) theories are developed, establishing the connections between them. Throughout, key examples from astrophysics are used, though no previous knowledge of astronomy is assumed. Exercises are included at the end of chapters to test the reader's understanding. This textbook is aimed primarily at astrophysics graduate students. It will also be of interest to advanced students in physics and applied mathematics seeking a unified view of fluid mechanics and plasma physics, encompassing both the microscopic and macroscopic theories.

4 out of 5 stars From a student of Steve Balbus..........2002-11-24

A clear exposition of all areas of astrophysical fluid dynamics (along with some plasma physics). I'm disappointed not to have found anything from the recent (and exciting) advances in MHD instabilities during the 1990s. The Balbus-Hawley Instability is completely ignored, which is a huge failure; this instability has revolutionized accretion disk theory and angular momentum transport, and has been the groundwork for a surge in numerical simulations of accretion disks. It's a great fundamental book nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Useful addition to a fluid dynamics library.......2000-07-23

This book is intended for astrophysicists who want to learn some fluid dynamics and plasma physics. The book does cover traditional topics of plasma physics books--kinetic theory, continuum hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, and plasma theory. There is a definite emphasis on astrophysical topics, although there are tidbits on aerodynamic lift, tokamaks, etc. It is sufficiently interesting to be of at least some interest to general students of fluid dynamics or plasma physics.

The book begins with a sketch of the kinetic theory derivation of the Navier Stokes equations, beginning with the Hamilton equations, and moving through Liouville's theorem, the Boltzmann equation, and taking the BGK approximation. It is only a sketch, not a full scale tutorial on kinetic theory, but I believe something along these lines does belong in any fluid dynamics course taught by a physics department. (Such courses are sadly uncommon.)

The continuum derivation of the Navier-Stokes equations is presented next, and I find it weak. I prefer the systematic, integral-based approaches found in books by, e.g., Panton and Kundu. There is NO discussion of the deformation (a.k.a. strain rate) tensor and the Cauchy-Stokes decomposition. There are brief discussions of some standard flows (e.g, potential flow around a cylinder, viscous Poiseuille flow, aerodynamic lift) and a brief discussion of boundary layers.

The remaining fluid dynamics chapters are on gas dynamics, waves and instabilities, turbulence, and rotation. The turbulence chapter is the best short introduction to Kolmogorov's -5/3 law that I've found; a good preface to reading the chapter on turbulence in other intro books, or even a dedicated turbulence book like Frisch. The remaining 7 chapters of the book are on plasma physics, including magnetohydrodynamics (I'm not an expert here, so I won't comment on them).

The book was favorably reviewed in "Comtemporary Physics" and "Journal of Fluid Mechanics", both reviewers praising the author's "engaging style" but expressing disappointment at the lack of more special topics in astrophysics. As long as a reader does not study this book in isolation, though, I think this would be an excellent supplement to his or her studies. I took this book with me on a vacation and enjoyed the reading.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for the beginers........1999-02-26

This book is really going to help those who are interested in Astrophysical Plasma. I have got this book just at the begining of my research career. "The Physics of Fluids and Plasmas" has made a unique attempt, where theories of neutral fluids and plasmas are developed simultaneously. Mathemetical details is very rare, but it understandable, since the title of this book contains "Introduction".
