Book Description
There's a new market battle cry being sounded around the world: Faster-Better-Cheaper. Organizations everywhere are in a competitive war trying to pick up speed, improve output, and do it all for less money.
Actually, "improvement" per se isn't too hard to come by with all of today's technological advancements. The tricky part comes in doing things faster, better, and cheaper all at the same time. That takes creativity. Ingenuity. Innovation. To help your employees grow in this regard, they need role models. Good examples. It helps greatly to see living proof of "faster-better-cheaper" in action.
Price Pritchett's latest title, The Mars Pathfinder Approach to "Faster-Better-Cheaper" provides that proof, and breaks it down into 13 high-impact guidelines your employees can use to drive your organization to spectacular success.
Co-authored with Brian Muirhead, Flight Systems Manager of the JPL Mars Pathfinder Team, this book shows how a small group of dedicated people-tapping into the spirit of ingenuity and innovation-proved "faster-better-cheaper" works in deep space as well as it does on Earth.
Most important, the book draws the "faster-better-cheaper" business messages out of this intriguing story, and shows your employees how to apply them in your organization.

Where Brian Muirhead when you need him?.......1999-12-12
What an incredible book! Brian Muirhead's story of developing, launching, and landing the successful Mars Pathfinder Mission is an incredible story of vision, hard work, attention to detail, and because of it all, success.
The professionalism exhibited by Brian and his team continue to inspire me months after I read the book.
In the current days of failed missions to Mars, I can't help but think that if Brian Muirhead had been in charge of those failed missions, they too would have been a success.
At last a simple powerful book on how to perform in groups.......1999-03-12
You were so impressed by the Mars Pathfinder mission, and you are definetely interested by people management issues: get this great little book, you will appreciate the conciseness, precision, and high value of all the concepts it expresses.
If history is to teach us how to be 'better' in the present and the future, such short and enjoyable summaries of what was done well, how and why, is THE way to learn, grow and improve.
What a mission, what a book ! I missed two metro stops while savoring each of its words ! Bravo !: 5 stars !
PS: Get Brian K. Muirhead & William L. Simon's excellent book HIGH VELOCITY LEADERDSHIP if you want to read more about faster, better, cheaper".
A management, not science book.......1998-08-24
This book is an advertisement for Pritchett Associates. It is not a book about Pathfinder science. The amount of real information about Pathfinder and the team is minimal. There is more Pathfinder information on NASAs web site. Unless you have never read a quality or other management book in the past few years, this book is nothing special.
Great ideas for finding new ways to do more with less!.......1998-08-23
Outstanding book showing how the Pathfinder team put a rover on Mars in less time and with a fraction of the money than it took to put up Voyager. Great ideas for how to look beyond the status quo and do things better, faster, cheaper. A great team leadership book.
A management, not science book.......1998-08-21
This book is an advertisement for Pritchett Associates. It is not a book about Pathfinder science. The amount of real information about Pathfinder and the team is minimal. There is more Pathfinder information on NASAs web site. The management information contained is not outstanding.
Customer Reviews:
A Classic!.......2002-08-23
This book is a real classic. You will see how rocket wizzard and space visionary Wernher von Braun and his colleagues imagined a manned mission to Mars with the technology available in the mid 20th century. With today's knowledge and financial horizon, von Braun's vision looks pretty oversized, and the surface of Mars certainly is very different from what they believed 50 years ago. The very value of this book is that it simply showed how such an extensive mission could be made feasible -- that it is possible to send people to Mars without fancy technology of science fiction writers. The authors use some calculus and diagrams to explain the complicated flight dynamics for sending a spacecraft to another planet and landing on its surface.
Today we know that a mission to Mars will not look like von Braun's "Mars Project" but it is good to know that most of the basics haven't changed. Buy this book together with Robert Zubrin's "Case for Mars" and you'll see the progress within half a century.
A book for the true space junkie........1999-11-30
Do you wonder how they did it? How they actually figured out how to get to the moon? Well, this is Von Braun's plan for getting to mars using the technologies available in the early 1950's and it shows the detailed thinking necessary to figure out how to make it all work. Lots of math and diagrams. My vote for the best book of the century. To give you some idea, I already own this book, a 1962 edition. It is getting too precious to thumb through.
Book Description
This never-before-printed science fiction novel by the original "rocket man," Wernher von Braun, combines technical fact with a human story line in the way that only a true dreamer can realize. Encompassing the entire story of the journey, this novel moves from the original decision for a Mars mission, through the mission planning, the building of the mighty space ships, the journey, the amazing discoveries made on Mars, and the return home. The author's attention to the actions and feelings of the characters—both those who went and those who stayed behind—makes this an adventure of human proportions, rather than merely another fanciful tale. This exclusive von Braun treasure comes complete with an appendix of his original technical drawings, made in the late 1940s, on which the story's plot is based.
Customer Reviews:
5 stars for the appendix!.......2007-08-13
This book probably ought to be subtitled THE MOST IMPORTANT SCIENTIFIC APPENDIX EVER PUBLISHED!
Well, its not the worst SF I have ever read, but its true I doubt if even in 1950 anyone would have published this in the US.
Strange, the preface is not signed, the translator wrote it? Anyway the preface does not mention that when von Braun submitted this to a German publisher the novel was rejected, but the publisher/editor, thought the Appendix was dynamite!
So that is how Das Marsprojekt, The Mars Project, the Colliers Series, the Disney Series and Exploration of Mars came to be. Possibly , the Colliers Series provided the lasting kick that got the Apollo program invented.
[...]
I notice a curious mix of Bonestell's in the book, some from Colliers and some from Exploration of Mars, not a good job referencing these paintings.
The 'Publisher's Introduction' seems ignorant or choose to neglect the fact that John Campbell and his boys (Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke......) had banished BEMS and Brass Bras to the realm of third string SF mags starting about 1938! Realistic scientifically accurate space flight SF was common currency in 1950.
von Braun's Mars.......2007-03-20
Project Mars: A Technical Tale will not win a Hugo or a Nebula Award but it is a very entertaining novel. Although written over fifty years ago the book evokes a sense of wonder that is missing from much contemporary science fiction. Von Braun's expedition to the red planet is described realistically and meticulously. There are no warp drives, worm holes, or other short cuts, just basic rocket science. The Bonestell illustrations alone are worth the price of the book.
Mars - why aren't we there yet?.......2007-02-03
Werner Von Braun is the technical heavyweight behind Germany's WW-II V-2 rocket program. He was arrested by the Gestapo for focusing on manned spaceflight rather than vengence weapons. His tale of coming to America with his team is well known. Project Mars is an interesting science fiction story. Written by Von Braun in German in 1950, while he was at Fort Bliss, Texas for the Army, it tells the tale of a manned Mars expedition. Interestingly, it is one of the few science fiction novels I have read with a 65 page technical appendix of equations. It mentions the books that Von Braun was influenced by, chiefly Verne. This shows what Von Braun was thinking in the 1930's and 1940's, but couldn't share before coming to America. A must read for those involved or interested in space exploration.
Battlestar Galactica-dreams of Mars.......2007-01-09
Here it is at last: a translation into English of the original German text of "Das Marsprojekt", "The Mars Project", as penned down by Wernher von Braun in Fort Bliss at the end of the forties. That was the age of some belief in the coming exploration of Space, and, at the same time, a rank disbelief on the practicabilities of the "Buck Rogers stuff". The novella text was probably not meant for publication, and, mercifully, it was not published before now. One shudders when thinking of the impact it could have had if published, say, in 1960 or -61...The Rocket Sage was a lucid technical writer, but, sad to say, no sci-fi author.
The "Technical" in the title, i.e. the technical sketching of rockets, spaceships and flight trajectories, was, however, published in the early fifties, first by Heinz Gartmann in the then Federal Republic of Germany, soon after by the University of Illinois press in the US. The monster three-stager Shuttle, the gargantuan Mars Space Ships were all figuring in the background of the classical Collier's article and book series, and along with plans for rocket ships to the Moon they entered the iconography of the Space Buffs of the Fifties. Much of the awe and wonder that we felt was, of course, generated by the artists, Chesley Bonestell, Fred Freeman, Rolf Klep, but the mastermind behind those icons was always von Brauns.
Today von Braun's book is a timepiece, harking back to those bygone ages, when Mars could be seen as the abode of older and wiser men, in the tradition of Percival Lowell, and when giant rocketships would be developed and used for manned exploration of space without all the political infighting and pork barreling which has characterized the actual practice. Would that something of all that was real, but we can always dream ourselves, as we read on. And the images of the rocketships have been enduring standards by which later plans and projects have been measured.
It's a tale of one man's dream, of the Conquest of Space, that never was, and a flight to a planet Mars which was dated as von Braun was writing. And it is a tale, that bring us latter day armchair astronauts a bit nearer to the minds of those, who not only dreamed, but in the words of Lawrence of Arabia "act out their dreams when awake".
Great scientist... not so great author.......2006-12-05
It's not a BAD story... but this was definitely written by someone who didn't have English as their primary language, and didn't have a good editor to file down the jagged edges. Plus, the beginning of the book was very long-winded (not that was much of a problem, since it also includes a lot of technical explanation and hardware descriptions), the time on Mars was much less exhaustively described, and the return trip glossed over in a couple of pages. Uneven pacing, iffy editing... but yet I'm glad I got this and read it, and I WOULD recommend it. It does show just how complex the mind of Von Braun was, and it is, in my opinion, worth the money for that alone.

Customer Reviews:
Intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this book with envious eyes........2007-08-01
The template of "principles" in this book are covertly ideal discussion topics & solutions to be telegraphed sublimely during an interview session for the software development project manager when the interviewer(s) are not technically astute and semi-techtarded. In no way am I trivializing this book's relative importance, nor its integrity, just its targeted appeal. Nearly all big picture "solutions" presented in this text are genuinely useful but often overlooked. Rapid prototyping to get ideas and requirements into the recursive feedback loop of constructive critique and buy-in as fast as possible, what's better than that in the real world of software development? To keep things in perspective, keep a mental copy of this simplistic book within you for those high-level meetings and interviews to help paint the bigger picture of that which is really important in getting quality, productive software successfully developed instead of going astray in detailed minutiae.
Simple List of Lessons Learned.......2006-11-13
A simple collection of Best Practices and Lessons Learned from the Mars Rover Software Project. Full of higher level design and architecture decisions, but, no code listings and minimal implementation details. The lessons cover everything from component interfaces, logging, loosely coupled services to team dynamics and project management. Large clear fonts and plenty of whitespace allow for easy and quick reading. Recommended for those seeking a high level view, don't look for a lot of detail such as code snippets, etc.

Book Description
A journalistÂ's unsettling and timely investigation into the ties between Beverly Hills, its oil wells, and a local cancer cluster
Beverly Hills High School is the crown jewel of a storied community that has long symbolized wealth and privilege. No one, including the author (class of 1971), thought twice about the oil pumps behind the schoolÂ's athletic fields; the derricks were just a part of the landscape, bringing in a sizable amount of royalty money to the community. But in 2003, after a group of young graduates developed cancer and the loudmouthed and sensationalistic Erin Brockovich caused a stir claiming the drilling was the cause, Beverly Hills was dragged into a landmark tort case that has split the town in two and will cause a media stir when it goes to trial later this year.
In Parts per Million, Joy Horowitz tells the story behind the headlines, interviewing cancer specialists, lawyers, epidemiologists, city officials, residents, and Brockovich herself. She crafts a riveting picture of PTA moms fighting for the truth, parents in denial, cancer-ridden youth, a school board terrified of having failed in its obligation to keep kids safe, and the complex game of toxic tort litigation that stands to strike a huge financial blow to the powerful oil companies and the iconic community. A Civil Action meets An Inconvenient Truth, Parts per Million couches medical and scientific inquiry in a compelling legal drama. Horowitz examines our tangled relationship with oil, money, and the environment, and bravely questions how many more will have to die before government regulators put economics aside and heed the warnings of science.
Customer Reviews:
A story of hystteria by a hysteric author.......2007-09-28
Joy Horowitz doesn't tell it like it is. No one ever proved that the oil wells on the Beverly Hills High School campus ever caused any illness. There is no credible scientific proof. Just hysterical allegations.
Since I had experience in closing down many oil wells in Torrance, I was hired by the City of Beverly Hills in 1973 to get rid of the oil wells on the Beverly Hills campus. At that time they were scattered on the campus. Oil was selling at about $2.00 a barrel and the oil well field was just about exhausted. Only a major investment in injection technology which would have forced the oil out of the sands would have made the wells productive. The owner did not have the money. The Beverly Hills School Board also wanted to get rid of the wells but did not know how to do it.
I began preparing a strategy for closing down the unproductive wells and the necessary ordinances. But at the time, the owners, the Beverly Hills Oil Company, were just looking for a way to get out, hoping that they would be bought out. However, at that time the nation suffered from an oil embargo and the price of oil shot sky high and the value of the oil leases sky rocketed.
The oil embargo was eventually lifted and oil prices came down but still were significantly higher thus the oil company 's revenues from even its limited production of oil were sufficient to not only cover the costs of production but to make a tidy profit. But if the company could expand its drilling and recover the oil remaining in the oil field there were much better profits.
Nothing really happened though until Proposition 13 passed which significantly reduced the amount of revenue available to the School District. The oil company then came up with a proposal that appeared to be win-win for both the oil company, the School District, and many property owners in Beverly Hills who had leased the oil rights to the oil company. The oil company proposed to consolidate all of its wells into one drill site which would eliminate the wells scattered around the high school and they would pay substantially higher royalties to the School District and the property owners.
There was however, a fly in the ointment. It had to be approved by the City. The City Council wanted the oil wells to go away but there was considerable political pressure on the Council to at least consider the proposal. Adding to the problem was that the School District has no one with any experience with oil drilling so the task fell to the City and primarily on me. I am an opponent of oil drilling having been involved in opposing oil drilling on the coast in the Pacific Palisades and also trying to get the Occidental Oil drilling site on Pico in West Los Angeles shut down.
Consequently, the City required an extensive Environmental Impact Report which was prepared entirely by independent consultants hired by the City but principally recommended by me. Every possible hazard including health hazards were explored and if there was even the slightest hint of a hazard, strict conditions were imposed, many of them expensive. For example, the oil company had always transported the oil from the site by truck, but the City required that the oil be transported by pipeline. There were nearby oil pipelines from other sites in Century City to connect to.
The City also wanted the drill site extensively camouflaged so that it did not look like an oil well. However, the City had imposed so many conditions on the site, that the costs of better camouflaging the site would have left almost no profit for anyone to divvy up so that condition was dropped and the existing tower was constructed. At that time oil was selling at around $18 a barrel.
I am satisfied that the conditions imposed upon the drilling were so stringent, particularly on air pollution, that there was no hazard whatsoever to the students and faculty of the high school and knowing how tough the City enforces conditions, that there was no risk of any health hazards to people or to the employees working on the site.
That is why when Erin Brockovich filed the law suit I knew that it was bogus and complete nonsense, particularly when the case was laid out. If anyone was exposed to
potential harm it was the employees and there were no reports of any illness among them. Moreover, oil wells have been on the High School campus since it was built in 1928 and those wells never had the protections that the wells now have and there never were any reports of illness. Additionally, there are thousands of oil wells in the County and few have the protections built in to the high school site and there have been no reports of any illnesses that resulted from those wells.
The more Brockovich laid out the case the more apparent it was that she was relying on "junk science." Clearly some of it was absolutely bogus. But for those unfamiliar with what is involved, her case sounded extremely reasonable. I have thought at times that she may have grossly exaggerated the case in order to stir up public hysteria in hopes of winning a major settlement. I suspect she knew that she could never prove the case if it went to trial.
Joy Horowitz appears to be one of those caught up in the hysteria and her book reflects that hysteria. It is obvious that she doesn't have the scientific training to understand how to prove the connection between a source and the cause of an illness or she would have understood why the case was a hoax.
Human Tragedy.......2007-08-20
This intense, clearly and compellingly written, painstakingly researched epic is a human tragedy set in a medical and environmental disaster affecting children and their teachers, and the residents of an entire neighborhood. While similar cancer clusters have appeared in other locations, the clear cause of the cancer cluster at Beverly Hills High School has blinded the local government, parents and other residents, and has caused them to act against the best interests of their children and community, dooming them to a huge risk of an array of early fatal cancers. Horowitz has dug deeply into the scientific background and legal action of this disaster, producing a page-turner, despite the volume of information. If this can happen in a wealthy community with the resources of Beverly Hills, it can happen anywhere (and is). Anyone interested in the intersection between business and environmental and legal issues must read this excellent book, which in my opinion should win the Pulitzer Prize!!!!
A Must Read.......2007-08-14
Joy Horowitz has written a mesmerizing and disturbing account of what is hidden from us, literally and metaphorically. She weaves compelling personal stories together with a history of Beverly Hills, its glamour and secrets, as she exposes the ubiquitous role of oil in this country. A Beverly Hills High graduate herself, the author infuses her journalistic account with a first hand knowledge of the place and the people about whom she writes. It is a moving and revelatory book. And you will want to underline at least one thing on every page.
Riveting.......2007-08-14
I can't believe how much of a page-turner this book is, given the complex and technical nature of the subject. I was hooked on the second page when the author described the magazines in a hospital waiting room having pages as limp as silk. Such details give a texture to the material which could in other less competent hands be as dry as a bone. That and the fact that the author, an alumna of Beverly Hills High, isn't hopeless about the hideous, head-in-the-sand response from the School District and the City of Beverly Hills. It's a truly marvelous book!
A captivating, informative journalistic thriller.......2007-08-06
It's a rare privilege to be able to join a journalist at the top of her game in her search for the truth. That is what Joy Horowitz invites and allows us to do. I urge everyone awake to accept the invitation and
read this book. Then go wake up someone else and give it to them. It's too
important to miss and it's a thrilling, chilling, moving and finally remarkably human story. Don't miss this one!

Book Description
This volume has been prepared for the Environmental and Health & Safety Manager. The EH&S manager is a new breed of corporate professionals that are faced with the responsibility of handling both environmental policy/issues and occupational safety issues within organizations. Throughout the 1980s there was a proliferation of health and safety departments, environmental compliance personnel, and technical people associated with handling pollution control and waste management. American industry has been over the last several years contracting and downsizing their operations. In doing so, many corporations, large and small, are demanding greater responsibilities be delegated to middle and line function management. In this regard, many corporations today are moving towards a single management entity, the EH&S manager, who's responsibilities require extensive knowledge of both the environmental statutes and OSHA standards.
This desk reference has been written as a compliance source for the EH&S manager. The authors prefer to call the EH&S manager an Occupational Safety Professional and use this designation interchangeably throughout the text. This individual, as stated above, has a dual responsibility that requires both technical and managerial skills in two arenas. In this regard, this book provides the working professional a reference on both the environmental regulations and industry safety standards. Additionally, it covers management practices for on-site hazard materials handling operations and constitutes an important reference for establishing hazard communication and training programs for employees.

Book Description
The study group `Environmental Standards' established in 1987 as an expert panel of the German Academy of Sciences and Technology in Berlin compiled this book on setting environmental standards that has been literally written and authorized by all group members. The group consisted of eleven individuals representing the following disciplines: physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, law, psychology, and sociology/economics.
Firstly,
Environmental Standards summarizes the state of the art in each discipline with respect to the topic of environmental standards, limited to one major case study: the effects of ionizing radiation. Within the subject of ionizing radiation and its impacts, the book intends to provide a complete and accurate picture of the various health impacts and environmental problems. Second, this volume provides guidelines for a desirable procedure that would guarantee the inclusion of all scientific data and reasoning but would also assure the incorporation of social costs, cultural values and individual preferences in the decision making process. The study includes a section that describes an analytic framework for collective decision making under uncertainty and a section on institutional innovations necessary to implement a procedure for integrating scientific input and rational decision making. The procedural suggestions are focused around a new environmental institution that is empowered to initiate and promulgate new standards on the basis of a present process of linking scientific data with social values and preferences. The volume represents a rare example of integrating the natural and social sciences and developing consistent and complete procedural guidelines for standard setting in a democratic society.
