Book Description
The Seventh Edition of The Challenge of Democracy maintains the framework that explores two themes: freedom, order, and equality as political values; and the majoritarianism vs. pluralism debate, but also examines the impact that globalization has on the American political system. In the Post 9/11 Update, the authors examine the September 11 attacks and their impact on American politics. These updates will reflect the thematic framework of the text and be integrated throughout this updated version. In-text icons integrate the Real Deal UpGrade CD-ROM with the text and internet exercises.
- Politics in a Changing World boxed features appear in every other chapter and highlight how American politics affect the world and how the world's politics affect the United States.
- Can You Explain Why? features challenge students to use critical-thinking skills to explain a political paradox.
- Politics in a Changing America features highlight changes in the political opportunity and participation of minority groups.
- Compared with What boxes ask students to evaluate facets of the American political system in relation to those of other countries.

Excellent 101 Survey.......2002-08-03
This is an excellent 'first look' deeper into American politics, and should be required reading for Poli Sci 101 classes. What separates 'Challenge of Democracy' from most other 'beginner's' political science books is its unabashed but un-partisianed look at the workings of the Amnerican political system from the inside out and the outside in. The title alone suggests that Democracy is not a one way street from the Hill down, but something which needs to be constantly nurtured and protected from going astray. The 'challenge' is also in using our political system as a tool to maintain our freedoms and as a vehicle for change to enable us more freedoms and at the same time greater security. In short, 'The Challenge of Democracy' will get one thinking deeper about the inner-workings and dynamics of the American political system by focusing on a broader spectrum of its use, abuse, and everyday applications.
Guide to American Government.......2002-06-08
I read this book in my government class at Bakersfield College. This book is an excellent place to start for anyone who is interested in learning about how our government works, but are unsure of where to start. This book breaks down the workings of our governement in clear and easy to read chapters. I highly recommed this book to everyone who cares about America and wants to understand what goes on in Washington D.C., and in other parts of America as well.
Not very much.......1999-11-27
This book helps us to study English at our University. We learn how the justce is administered in USA from "The Challenge of Democracy." It`s a little bit boring, but on the other way it is very nice source of legal terms
Book Description
William Hudson's critical and provocative text urges students not just to think about how American democracy functions, but also to examine why American democracy has become what it is today. Hudson identifies eight major challenges to the strength of the political system, directly laying out the ways in which these developments erode the very foundations of American democracy: Does judicial activism eliminate the voice of the people in American policymaking? To what extent should Americans sacrifice their civil liberties in the interest of national security? Does the "American Dream" still exist given the degree of inequality in the United States?
Ever challenging students' apathy or antipathy of politics, Hudson provides critical, but balanced recommendations for reform, while emphasizing that the strength of the U.S. political system rests on the ability to respond successfully to these pressing issues. Important new coverage in this fifth edition includes:
- The disparity between low- and high-income residents of the Gulf Coast that was thrown into vivid relief after Hurricane Katrina, revealing deeply embedded social, economic, and political inequality in the United States.
- Judicial appointment politics that allow the president to promote ideological values in an undemocratic manner.
- Stunted "sound bite" media coverage and candidate-centered campaigning that discourage Americans from deliberating and exercising their voices on national policy concerns.
- The Bush administration's approaches to fighting terror and upholding democracy in the world that may, in fact, jeopardize democratic values.

Misleading Propaganda.......2006-12-23
This book is well written -- it is easy to read and in many senses incredibly engaging. The book is well organized, argued, and paced to fit the interested college reader.
It in unfortunate, then, that the entire premise of the book is misleading, and that the arguments are appallingly and unblinkingly one-sided. The title, American Democracy in Peril, should immediately hint at a major problem: Though working on many principles of democracy, America is not and has never been a true and direct democracy, nor was it ever meant to be. Hudson ignores this simple fact available in any grade school Social Studies textbook to make his point.
Hudson's points are, as well, virtually entirely one sided. All but a few of his arguments are completely liberal, and some, especially the section on Radical Individualism, are communist. Such a position would be all fine and good if Hudson ever acknowledged that the other side might have a few good arguments. Instead, Hudson mercilessly attacks conservative and (especially) libertarian viewpoints, in many cases arguing for the case of argument, even when the other case does have merit.
Such a book would be fine for personal reading -- the Republicans and Libertarians have sold millions of copies of similar books -- but being as it is a textbook, such flaws are inexcusable. To present undergraduate students with a work that is written using specific knowledge and layers of defensive argumentation, especially when presented as background material or well-grounded scholarly opinions is dangerously pushing open minds into a corner where they are not permitted to be open, but rather constrained to one viewpoint that does not even begin to acknowledge any others.
In sum, William Hudson's American Democracy in Peril is, though well written, a non-scholarly, one-sided, often hostile work that should be viewed as one-side of the argument, and not the entire argument itself.
Well thought out and persuasive.......2006-01-03
I am a college student at Temple University and I had to read this book for my political science class. I thought this book was very well thought out and persuasive. In the book, Hudson explains eight reasons why America falls short of being a true democracy.
I learned very much from this book and I suggest it to somebody who wants to learn about the United States' democratic system and how it could work better!
Book Description
Social Democracy in the Global Periphery focuses on social-democratic regimes in the developing world that have, to varying degrees, reconciled the needs of achieving growth through globalized markets with extensions of political, social and economic rights. The authors show that opportunities exist to achieve significant social progress, despite a global economic order that favours core industrial countries. Their findings derive from a comparative analysis of four exemplary cases: Kerala (India), Costa Rica, Mauritius and Chile (since 1990). Though unusual, the social and political conditions from which these developing-world social democracies arose are not unique; indeed, pragmatic and proactive social-democratic movements helped create these favourable conditions. The four exemplars have preserved or even improved their social achievements since neoliberalism emerged hegemonic in the 1980s. This demonstrates that certain social-democratic policies and practices - guided by a democratic developmental state - can enhance a national economy's global competitiveness.

An Easy Read .......2006-04-04
I used this textbook for an Introduction to American Government class at college. Frankly, I found the book almost simplistic at points but it was always very clear and concise. I would definately recommend this text for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive, yet readable guide to US Gov. Plus, it is so often updated with new editions that it makes for vert relevant reading. Highly recommended.
Great book despite hating government.......2005-08-13
I have never read an entire textbook in my life. This was the first, and it actually kept my attention for the most part. At times it gets boring but hey its the basics of government you can't expect excitement all the time. There are plenty of examples of the various definitions given with very recent applications. Examples make it easier rather than just spitting out the definition and leaving the reader to interpret. I am an engineering major that needed a government class to graduate and I am glad this was the book I had b/c I hate government/history.

Book Description
Provocative and clearly written, this book challenges the reader to reflect on the problems of American democracy. This new and updated third edition expands exploration of what Hudson considers are the major challenges to American democracy: the separation of power: radical individualism: citizen participation: trivialized elections: the privileged position of business: inequality; and the national security system.
The book emphasizes such critical and topical political issues as the persistence of economic inequality despite the economic prosperity of the late 1990s; the Clinton scandals and the impeachment controversy; the impact of globalization on business; the role of soft money in the 1996, 1998, and 2000 election campaigns; the post-Cold War national security state; and the consequences of the Gulf War and Kosovo interventions.

Title Correct.......2002-11-26
This book is scarey. I read it to find out what they are teaching our kids. It was assigned reading. It advocates the abandondment of our constitutional system of checks and balances that has made us the greatest nation on earth. "Our eighteen-century Constitution has become a major obstacle to achieving democratic government in the twenty-first century" (pg34) - really? The author would prefer a socialist state. The radical left, running our schools, love it and teach this garbage. Why is it one is considered a right wing extremist to want to defend our constitution and have it taught to our kids? He makes broad accusations with no data to back up his statements: "During this period, most Americans were clearly dissatisfied......" (pg47) This is a two star only because it is well written and a window for us all to see the ultimate liberal agenda.
Critical Examination of the Fundamentals of US Government.......2000-11-29
William E. Hudson has written an eloquent, insightful, and well-thought critique of the United States system of representative democracy. Hudson confronts the challenges to American democracy raised by campaign finance, the media, radical individualism, and the national security state. Hudson does not shy away from full fledged confrontation with the complacent stereotypes of American politics; instead, he utilizes his sharp wit and insight to cut through the layers of tacit consent which usually shield and protect our system of government to write a book about government as it really is. In an era when understandings about government are shrouded in assumptions and soporifisms, Hudson peels back the layers to expose the American political system and the central problems it carries with it.

Book Description
As the torchbearers of environmental activism, women from around the world have created profound changes that are helping to ensure a healthier planet for all living things. Whether it is Judi Bari, who was crippled by a car bomb because of her efforts to save California's ancient redwood forests; Dai Qing, who was imprisoned for her opposition to an environmentally destructive dam on China's Yangtze River; or Dr. Tatynana Artyomkina, who defied KGB threats and exposed health and environmental risks in the Soviet Union, women have put their lives on the line and persevered against daunting odds to restore and protect the environment.
Mary Joy Breton provides absorbing sketches of these and other women activists in the Americas, Eastern and Western Europe, Africa, and Asia. Breton interweaves her accounts with narrative on the ecological hazards that drove these women to spearhead various environmental campaigns, examining why and how they challenged, and often defeated, the power structures of government and industry.
Although these remarkable women come from various geographical regions and represent a wide range of economic, ethnic, and political backgrounds, they share insights, values, and a particular sensitivity to the Earth that led them to change the course of history. Their courageous efforts illuminate the crucial role of women in the environmental movement, and provide inspiration for a new generation of activists.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent book for environmentalist and for women causes........1998-10-03
I thought the book was an excellent review of some very powerful women who, in most cases had scant means, but who have risked much to keep our planet whole and protect it from being exploited for short term gains. I would recommend it strongly to anyone interested in preserving the environment and/or in realizing how much work has been done by some outstanding women to protect and restore our planet.

Well-told stories from the wilderness.......2006-01-20
This is Chris Czajkowski's third book, and is written a little differently than her first two. Those two were written in chronological order, telling of events taking place over a set amount of time. This one is a collection of stories that take place over a longer period of time and are in not necessarily in any particular order.
In case you've never read any of her Czajkowski's books before, she lives in the British Columbia wilderness, a 2-4 day walk from a road or civilization. She makes her living hosting visitors who come to experience the beautiful Coast Mountains. Some of the stories in this book are about that, but she also tells of repeated bear break-ins, some of the hair-raising adventures experienced out on the trail, her dogs (who serve as both companions and pack animals), tracking down an elusive wildflower, attempting to raise an orphaned baby squirrel, and of course the wild weather that sometimes whips through the area.
As always, Chris tells her stories expertly. She is a good writer, and the fact that this book is true makes it all the more interesting. Whether or not the wilderness life appeals to you, these stories entertaining to read.
wonderful intimate diary of life in the mountains.......2000-07-08
This book was billed as a "riveting adventure story" and a "heartfelt elegy to the true wilderness." While I wholeheartedly agree with the latter, the former is misleading. The author frequently mentions the romance of her chosen home and the book does focus on the notable events of her daily life. But if you're looking for one of those overblown life-or-death dramas, look elsewhere. She deals very realistically with the dangers inherent in her lifestyle. The brief but detailed descriptions of the world around her definitely can make you feel like you're right there. And the stories of events in her daily life, big and small, good and bad, can be riveting indeed but probably not to most.
The author obviously loves her life and her home. There is real beauty in the simple and honest portrayal of life in a remote area. If you've spent any time living near true wilderness, reading this book feels like sitting down in a cozy cabin with a stranger suddenly become friend and trading stories over a cup of tea. In short, I couldn't put it down.
Love buying my books online but browsing bookstores still can bring wonderful books to your attention. So thanks to the Paulina Book Company in Sisters, Oregon, for having this author's books and other carefully selected gems collected in one place. Her "Diary of a Wilderness Dweller" looks to be just as good and I'm hoping Amazon can track down her out of print titles. Highly recommend this author to anyone that likes quality books of this genre.
