1 out of 5 stars One Teacher's Review.......2005-09-18

This textbook is one of the most boring texts I have ever read. While the information is timely, the presentation of it is difficult to read and the purpose of the language used appears to be more to impress the reader than to impart knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect science methods book.......2005-08-16

This is the ideal science methods text. It offers a solid theoretical background and clearly illustrates the practical applications of this theory. The advice about classroom management is sound, sober, and realistic. I am delighted that the authors spend an entire chapter on often neglected topics (in other science methods texts) such as professional development and the history of reform in science education. This text is current, smart, engaging, and informed.

      Book Description

This valuable activities-based book offering integrated experimental exercises appropriate for preservice mathematics and science teachers, and also serves as a practical resource for inservice teachers desiring knowledge on how to integrate mathematics and science with technology. This book explores a broad range of sciences: physics, earth science, chemistry and biology. Basic mathematics skills in algebra, statistics, and geometry are expanded by the use of classroom-appropriate technology such as graphing calculators, handheld data collection devices, and simple analytical instrumentation. The lessons presented in this experimental guidebook have all been field-tested. They work! Set-up time is minimal, chemicals used are mostly household available, and waste disposal is not a problem. Most chapters begin with a historical approach, laying the foundation in both mathematics and science. Readers are guided through one or more experimental exercises per concept. Inservice and preservice math and science teachers.

The text is organized around the four essential components of effective teaching: foundations, preparing for instruction, implementation of instruction, and the profession. Chapter objectives, key terms, check-up questions, application questions, and a glossary help students learn. In the second edition middle school issues, techniques, and implications added to each chapter. Topics related to school reform that have been added include school-based management, charter schools, community and parental involvement, curriculum integration, equal education, block scheduling, year-round schooling, and recommendations from What Matters Most: Teaching for America's Future report (chapter 1). 1 out of 5 stars No Teaching Methods in Here.......2003-10-08

This book is filled with redundancy and knowledge common to any college student. It has no teaching methods and never touches learning style. Well, unless you want to count the short section on lecture. We all know what it takes to make an interesting lecture or promote student learning with questions. We have been in college. This book is a true waste of money.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books available for new teachers........2002-10-26

This book has some great ideas for teaching a class room and then it has some outdated material and ideas that should have been edited out of the book years ago. For example, "textbook recitation is an effective technique for teaching basic information simply because students are often motivated to read and study the assignment in anticipation of being called on to recite the information." What planet is this author from? There may be one out of a thousand students who would actually read in "anticipation" of being called on in class. There are better books available to new teachers like "Understanding by Design."

      Book Description

Linn and Hsi show how computers, teachers, and peers can serve as learning partners--helping students build on their ideas and become lifelong science learners. They invite everyone interested in improving science education to build on their experiences, share insights on the Internet, and create instruction.

      Computers, Teachers, Peers:

      * offers case studies to bring the ideas of students learning science to life. *Join Sasha, Chris, Pat, and Lee as they try to make sense of experiments using computers to display data in real time;*
      * provides principles to help teachers improve their instruction, use technology better, and inspire more students to love science. *Find out how to use visualization tools, online discussion, and more to make science relevant;*
      * gives researchers and instructional designers a model for effective research and curriculum design. *Linn and Hsi report that the partnership approach to research resulted in a 400% increase in student understanding of science;*
      * helps schools develop technology plans that continuously improve science instruction. *Find out how schools can design better ways to use technology for learning;*
      * describes a partnership inquiry process where science teachers, science education researchers, discipline specialists, and technologists consider each others' perspectives and jointly design instruction. *Boys and girls are equally successful in the resulting science courses;* and
      * features practical tools for learning and instruction, including "Points to Ponder"--to encourage reflection on the ideas in each chapter (partnership groups or classes might use the points as discussion starters or assignments), and "Ask Mr. K."--an interview, in each chapter, with the classroom teacher who was a founding member of the CLP partnership (in these interviews Mr. K. adds insights from his own classroom experiences).

This book is supplemented by a CD-ROM (included in each copy) and a Web site ( www.clp.berkeley.edu) with the Computers as Learning Partners curriculum, lesson plans, a Quicktime virtual reality visit to the classroom, copies of assessments, opportunities to join partnerships, and more. For readers who wish for more information, Related Readings are cited, including works by authors mentioned in each chapter. Additional works by other authors who inspired the authors appear in the bibliography, on the website, and on the CD-ROM. An annotated bibliography of papers by the members of the CLP partnership also appears at the website and on the CD-ROM.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful, research-based design for inquiry science.......2003-03-08

Every science teacher should read this book! The thought, research, and insight the developers put into the new designs for learning science are wonderful. They listened to students, observed how students made sense of the world around them, and adjusted the technology and learning strategies to connect science to everyday happenings in the lives of students. This book also tells the story of how partnerships between higher education, K-12, and field science organizations can bring relevance and meaning to the teaching and learning of science in our schools. Terrific Book!

      5 out of 5 stars Teacher review.......2000-05-01

From my role as a science teacher, it is encouraging to have a book which is informed by years of classroom research. My experience with the Computer as Learning Partnership project has greatly changed my understanding of how kids learn and what it takes to change the way they perceive the world around them. This book provides a pedagogical framework that has worked very successfully over several years and narrows the gap between academic research and classroom practice. I hope that my responses to the "Ask Mr. K." questions will be useful to teachers in reflecting on their own practices.
