4 out of 5 stars Great approach.......2007-10-11

This book provides a very sound approach to research methods. It covers a lot of ground in depth but takes the difficulty of the material ( fro most undergraduate students) into account.

2 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion.......2000-08-11

First, I want to say that I have NOT read this book; I have some comments based on its table of contents. I teach research methods in education, and have served on over a hundred dissertation committees in education and other fields (including several dissertations in psychology), and I would not use or recommend this book primarily because of its extremely limited treatment of qualitative research. Despite the book cover's claim that the book deals with "the entire range of research methodologies in psychology", the coverage of qualitative methods appears to be limited to one chapter on naturalistic and case-study methods. (A second chapter which deals with field research in fact seems to focus on quasi-experimental and single-subject designs, which are not qualitative.) The rest of the book is heavily quantitative/experimental in its approach (there are three chapters on experimental design alone). It seems revealing that although there are sections on the limitations of naturalistic and case study research and correlational and differential research, there is no explicit section on the limitations of experimental research. There is also no discussion of one of the most common qualitative approaches used in psychology--the qualitative interview study, which is different from a "case study". (For more on this approach, I recommend "Learning from Strangers: The Art and Method of Qualitative Interview Studies", by the psychologist Robert Weiss.)

If you are a student in a very quantitatively-oriented psychology department, this may be a useful book for you. However, at a time when many research methods books are devoting much more space to qualitative methods, Graziano and Raulin's book seems a bit anachronistic. Several highly regarded research methods textbooks that are more even-handed in their coverage are David Krathwohl, Methods of Educational and Social Science Research: An Integrated Approach (second edition, 1998), and Colin Robson, Real World Research: A Resource for Social Scientists and Practitioner-Researchers (1993; second edition forthcoming). There is also an enormous literature on qualitative methods specifically; simply search this site under "qualitative research".

5 out of 5 stars an excellent text with great web + cd support.......2000-06-12

I decided to adopt this text for my course as it is comprehensive, up-to-date, and includes a wealth of supplementary materials that are web-based, as well as available on the accompanying CD. Recommended highly for undergrad AND graduate students.

4 out of 5 stars Good baseline book for those preparing for a dissertation.......1998-10-10

As a Ph.D. student that is about to start my dissertation I found this book extremely helpful in wading through the various research and analysis methods. Filled with examples (although principally focused on Psychology), the book has helped me plan my dissertation. A great reference book and in my opinion a must have for those who are about to start their dissertation.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best wildflower guides out there.......2007-09-28

Mark Turner's books has become my bible for wildflower hunting in the Pacific Northwest. Not only is it jam-packed with most species, his photos are great and he offers great details for each plant. I have just about every wildflower book published for flowers throughout this region and Turner's is by far the best and first one I grab when heading out the door in search of flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource .......2007-09-02

Most horticultural books on anything "Pacific Northwest" tend to overlook the arrid eastern half of Washington state, which is a vastly different climate than the wet western side of the state. This book doesn't. As a previous reviewer noted, the maps are a GREAT and help tremendously in narrowing down the possible options when trying to ID a 5 petal yellow flower with heart-shaped leaves. That said, I did sometimes have problems with the pictures. Most are so closeup that there is no mistaking the correct identification; others aren't, making comparisons difficult. Oh, and the common name index--a huge omission. But for the most part, this is an excellent resource.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Wildflower Reference.......2007-08-19

I am very pleased with how thorough and complete this book is. It is very comprehensive and user-friendly. You do not have to be fluent in botanical terms to identify an unknown flower.
I also agree with the other reviewers that there should also be an index (or at least a cross-reference) of common names. Having to deal with only latin names does create an obstacle.
That being said, this is THE best field guide I've experienced with Pacific NW Wildflowers.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent........2006-07-10

Other than Pojar and MacKinnon's book and Cooke's wetland guide, this is the only general purpose, non-technical botanical books I'd recommend for the Pacific Northwest for wildflowers. Over 1200 species are covered, including many of those in oft-ignored areas covered by other guides such as southern Oregon and the Wallowa/Blue Mountains. Not every species is covered, of course, but chances are that if you see a plant growing somewhere in Washington or Oregon, this book would likely have it. Plant descriptions are solid, photographs are crisp and professional, and the county maps showing distribution are a tremendous addition (I cannot emphasize this enough). Anyone in the Pacific Northwest who is even a fleeting interest in wildflowers has to pick this up.

4 out of 5 stars Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest .......2006-06-25

A great book for anyone wanting to identify all those wildflower pictures you took, but never have. Very user friendly, I was able to ID a bunch of pictures I took in a relatively short time. Beautiful color photos. It didn't receive the 5th star because of the index. For example, I knew I had a mariposa lily, but didn't know what species. The index didn't help because you won't find "mariposa"; you need to know the exact species name. Also, not all common names are listed (compared to the National Plants Database). Besides that, I am very satisfied with the book and highly recommend it.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very good book........2005-07-11

I bought this book and its companion Washington guide at the same time and have not been disappointed by either. The layout of the two books is similar and have all the info necessary to get to the trailhead, follow the trail, and enjoy the hikes. The maps are good and easy to follow, although elevation contours are not shown.

The photography in the Oregon guide is very good, but not nearly on the level of the Washington guide. Being confined to Northwest Oregon, all the hikes can be reached easily from any location in the Willamette Valley as wel as elsewhere. State-wide guides (such as the Washingtom companion) have hikes you may never visit because of the distance to the trailheads from where you live, but this regional Oregon guide has 52 hikes that you will want to visit.

Wildflowers (common and scientific names) you should expect to see are described in the discussion of each hike, although spring and summer bloomers are mixed with no mention made of which is likely to be blooming when.

A small quibble is that five of the hikes are not even in Oregon, but rather on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. Still, these hikes are as easy to reach for much of Willamette Valley's population as some of those in central Oregon.

              5 out of 5 stars A great guide!.......2004-04-04

This guide has good maps, accurate trail ratings (at least for the several places I've visited and know of), beautiful pictures, and a good guide for blooming season. It covers hikes that will take most of the day to ones that are little more than a rest stop with scenic walking paths.

For some of the sights listed in the gorge I've been there both when things are in bloom and when it is the height of summer and things are dry and arid. Both times have their beauty.

This guide is well-written and easy to use.

                Book Description

For wilderness travelers and backyard naturalists alike, the sheer number and variety of North American trees can make identification a daunting task. For those who have struggled to distinguish the Pacific Yew from the Redwood or the Quaking Aspen from the Fremont Cottonwood comes Trees of the U.S., a user-friendly series of field guides. Ingeniously organized to allow for easy reference, each book in the series offers complete coverage of a given region of the United States and includes detailed and accurate illustrations of each species. Best of all, these guides are compact and lightweight, making them easy to throw in a pack and take along on a hike or camping trip.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not in color, but handy........2007-05-12

Enjoying this book. It is well organized and includes many species that are imported to the PNW, not just native species.

The book could use more color, but it is inexpensive and a book that can take abuse outdoors and not feel bad about maybe ruining it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the novice.......2000-05-10

This is a great book for the novice botanist. As a person who just recently started trying to identify wildflowers in the Monterey area, I found this book a great guide. I already have a couple of other books, including the ones from the Audubon Society and from the California Native Plant Society, but this one is so simple and covers most of the flowers you commonly see. It's easy to flip through, the pictures are clear and in color, and it certainly doesn't overwhelm you with technical jargon. I was only sorry it doesn't include some of the smaller/tinier flowers I see around. Maybe in the next edition. A great gift!
