This is a beautifully photographed book and the language that accompanies these images is heartfelt. This is a must have book in every home and classroom.

5 out of 5 stars A Celebration of Our Environment.......2006-02-13

The combination of breath-taking photography, and insightful and inspiring prose create an awesome yet humbling book. Its appeal is universal--everyone can learn, if we listen to its message.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Book.......2005-08-19

This book is one of the simplest, yet one of the most inspiring and enjoyable books I have ever read. The photography in it is amazing and Greive deffinately has a way with his words. In addition to this intriging visiual presentation, there is much to learn in this book as well. Learn about endangered and threatened animals thoughout the world while looking at unique images of them. This is a must read for everyone and it should be a required book for schools throughout the world to read instead of many other required books that have no appeal to students.

In addition, on the inside cover it reads, "BTG (author) is donating all his author royalties from the worldwide sales of Priceless to his principal wildlife conservation charity, the Taronga Foundation." Thats gotta say something about the book in itself!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favourite book of wildlife photography.......2003-10-26

Reading through Priceless is a bittersweet experience. It is a joy to look at the wonderful photography of Mitsuaki Iwago, and also a joy to learn amazing facts about some of these animals and to detect the passion for conservation and wildlife protection in author Bradley Trevor Greive's text. But there is a sadness: we learn how difficult it is for most species to adapt to the vast changes made by humans to this planet, so difficult that many of them could not do it, and no longer exist.

We learn that "even polar bears from the Arctic Circle and penguins from Antarctica, creatures from the two most isolated and pure economic systems on earth, have a substantial build-up of toxic industrial chemicals stored in their fat deposits"; we learn that the first bomb dropped on Berlin during the Second World War killed the only elephant in the Berlin zoo; that the last passenger pigeon in existence died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. The most important lesson from the book, however, is that if we don't do something soon to stop poisoning our world, ultimately us humans will be the ones suffering.

But the book ends with a message of hope, telling us that there are ways we can make a difference and giving suggestions of things we can do. Greive finally pays tribute to Gerald Durrell, celebrated zoologist, conservationist and author. The last 25 pages give information and facts about all the animals featured in the photographs throughout the book.

I strongly feel that if everyone read through this book, they would appreciate their planet a little more and want to help things change for the better. If I could afford to do so I would give it to everyone I know. It is very easy to read, the text on each page limited to a few sentences which apply to the photographs. The photos range from light-hearted and whimsical to completely awe-inspiring. The perfect gift for animal lovers and environmentalists, but I urge everyone to take a look. It is an inspiring experience.

Book Description

When Bill Weber and Amy Vedder arrived in Rwanda to study mountain gorillas with Dian Fossey, the gorilla population was teetering toward extinction. Poaching was rampant, but it was loss of habitat that most endangered the gorillas. Weber and Vedder realized that the gorillas were doomed unless something was done to save their forest home. Over Fossey's objections, they helped found the Mountain Gorilla Project, which would inform Rwandans about the gorillas and the importance of conservation, while at the same time establishing an ecotourism project -- one of the first anywhere in a rainforest -- to bring desperately needed revenue to Rwanda.

In the Kingdom of Gorillas introduces readers to entire families of gorillas, from powerful silverback patriarchs to helpless newborn infants. Weber and Vedder take us with them as they slog through the rain-soaked mountain forests, observing the gorillas at rest and at play. Today the population of mountain gorillas is the highest it has been since the 1960s, and there is new hope for the species' fragile future even as the people of Rwanda strive to overcome ethnic and political differences.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for anyone looking for conservation methods that work.......2007-08-17

This is a great book. Not only does it tell an incredible story. But it also illustrates one of the realities of saving wildlife and habitat. People don't kill wildlife or destroy forests out of spite. They are driven to it for economic reasons; namely, they have no other way to feed their familes. So, in order to change their behaviours, they have to be offered alternatives. The work of Bill Weber and Amy Vetter offered alternatives to Rwandans. Their living standards rose (excluding the effects of genocide and civil war, of course) and poaching and habitat destruction were reduced. A great case study.

But, much more than that, it is also an enjoyable, well written account of the lives and dreams of a great pair of people.

4 out of 5 stars If You're Going To The Gorillas, Read This First.......2007-03-10

Let me start by saying that the only criticism I have of this book is that it doesn't talk about the gorillas themselves, their lives and behavior, all that much. If you want a natural history of gorillas, look elsewhere.

Having said that--this is an excellent book and I highly recommend it, especially if you're going to Rwanda. The book follows the development of the Mountain Gorilla Project from the last years of Dian Fossey's life through the Rwandan genocide and beyond. It is written by the couple who took over the Project after Fossey's murder, and tells their story in fascinating detail. It is a record of the ongoing struggle to maintain a national park in a poor country, of the commitment and hard work of a few people--Europeans, Americans, Rwandans--in difficult and even deadly circumstances, and, most importantly, of the interactions of poverty, politics, personality, corruption, ignorance, education, inspiration, fear, courage, joy and tragedy in the real world of conservation biology.

While this is about one country, one park (mostly) and one species, it will give the reader a much clearer understanding of the diffculties faced by field biologists, park rangers, conservationists and governments the world over who are trying to preserve wild places.

The book is written in a lively, conversational style and makes every effort to be even-handed with some difficult personalities (Fossey's not least of these). Even though the book devotes only a chapter to the horror of the genocide, it presents the events in both a larger context and very personal, affecting detail. In fact, one of the great strengths of the book is its graceful incorporation of the big picture and the snapshot to tell a whole story.

If you're going to Rwanda (or if you've been there)--BUY THIS BOOK!

5 out of 5 stars An honest look at Gorilla history and research.......2007-01-09

Mountain Gorilla conservation and protection is a tenuous, difficult and sad story of the plight of these wonderful, intelligent beings. The truth of Dian Fossey's last years is also painful to digest. This book is forthright and eye-opening.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2006-02-14

I enjoyed reading about the authors' work with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, especially their emphasis on the human aspect of conservation. I think that most scientists are often unwilling to accept the importance of integrating conservation efforts with development goals, for their dedication to the science of it. I know that that was how I felt for the longest time. I no longer feel that way, and reading about the authors' perspective greatly enlarged mine. One critique that I do have with this book is the unnecessary recollection of all the things that were wrong with Dian Fossey following their discussion of her death. Not only was it superfluous, but it also detracted from their credibility as professionals--perhaps they felt that they needed to one-up Fossey for some of the admittedly horrible things that she did to them? I am interested in their opinions about the mountain gorillas, life in Rwanda, the Hutus and Tutsis, but no, not about their personal biases. Otherwise, this was an intriguing read.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2005-11-23

I read this book while on a trip to Rwanda & Uganda to see the mountain gorilla's. It is a magnificent book not just because of the couples work with the Gorilla's in difficult terrain but also because of their initiative to start eco tourism (essential to saving the Gorillas) in the face of much opposition (including Dian Fossey). It is enchanting to read about the high quality of the relationship between the couple and their work with the local people (including the lead up to the chilling Genocide).

I am planning on rereading it.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent material but some is a retread.......2001-04-30

In my opinion, Lewis Thomas is the best there is at describing the wonder and beauty of biology. His first book, "The Lives of a Cell" , set the standard against which all other popular writers in biology should be measured. The elegant simplicity of his descriptions of how organisms interact remain as interesting and valid today as when "Lives .. " was first published in 1974. I recently re-read it and found it just as interesting now as I did the first time.
That description also holds for this book, with Thomas once again waxing eloquent, particularly about the absurdity of "limited" nuclear war. His story about the development of Hawaiian Creole is also particularly thought-provoking. The islands were opened up for sugar plantations after 1880 and there was an enormous influx of laborers from many different language backgrounds. They came from China, Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico and the United States and none of these groups could understand any of the others. However, a pidgin language rapidly developed among the children of all groups. This hybrid language was almost completely unintelligible to the adults. Thomas uses this to argue his point that language originated among the children of early humans. The point is highly plausible, as only the minds of children seem to possess the necessary malleability to learn languages quickly.
While I found the book interesting, it is not the page-turning classic that "Lives . . " is. The problem is that so much of this material already appeared in that book. This is unfortunate, for when Thomas is original he is so engaging a writer. Given the ongoing advances in biology, there certainly is no lack of material to write about.

    4 out of 5 stars Amazingly readable!.......1999-04-26

Thomas's collection of essays on life, the universe and pretty darn much everything is suprisingly readable. He puts his theories into poetic prose and makes valid scientific points available in laymen's terms. More than a scientific paper, though, this is a deep peice of philosophy and offers much insight to the human soul. Definately worth reading!

      Book Description

Conservation and management of Florida's vulnerable wildlife and their habitat has been of great concern for decades, and Florida's Fragile Wildlife is a primer for natural resource managers on how to achieve it. Examining more than 20 threatened species from the perspective of land management, the book outlines the benefits of specific conservation initiatives on each species and discusses how those initiatives can be implemented.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Helping and accommodating Florida's wildlife.......2002-06-20

This well written book, should be useful for both land manager and concerned citizen. For many of Florida's "fragile species", Don presents background natural history research, but most importantly highlights survey and land management methods. For proactive management, this may include the use of fire to manipulate habitat succession, for example to help the gopher tortoise. Wood also sees the opportunity of species coexisting with other land uses, for example caracara and agriculture, or set back distances from eagle nests. He offers some urban strategies such as not feeding sandhill crane, or accommodating burrowing owls. Wood recognized some common problems among the species, such as habitat fragmentation, the need for urban strategies, and the confusion of resident versus winter populations when doing population surveys.

Although the pictures are useful, their use is sometimes uneven. For example, there are three examples of a gopher tortoise burrow, but no picture of salt marsh sparrow habitat. The maps were not always included, e.g., there was no map of the Florida Grasshopper sparrow distribution. I would have also liked some discussion of coastal shorebird and tern species, which would also benefit from human awareness.

As a stressed husband and father of four small children under the age of eight, Nigel Marsh was enslaved to his mortgage, recuperating from an embarrassing surgery, and suddenly fired from his corporate career. Deciding to venture "off the treadmill" in search of a more meaningful and balanced existence, Marsh tackled the art of hands-on parenting while simultaneously training for an ocean swimming race and coming to terms with his alcoholism. Touching on topics ranging from marital sex (or lack thereof), dieting, and parenthood to work, love, football, religion, self-help books, and sharks, Marsh makes his U.S. debut after enjoying best-seller status in Australia and the U.K. with this provocative and funny book.

This book is easy to read and very entertaining. I highly recommend it. I have only one criticism. Nigel Marsh is not some poor smuck who was fired from his average job. He is an extremely well educated, intellegent man who was able at age forty to correct some things about his life that needed fixing by not working for about 10 months. As a father, I had the same day dream when my children were small. I admire Mr. Marsh for being able to make his day-dream come true. I don't think it would have worked out as well for me or many other folks. Still, those ten months were great for Mr. Marsh and his family.

                      5 out of 5 stars Nigel's on the right track - a fabulous read.......2007-05-08

Nigel has an excellent way of sharing a perspecitve of work/life balance through stories we can all relate to. I was recently in a similar situation, and although I found this book after getting back to work, I wish I had found it sooner. I encourage everyone who found this review using the search words "Help me, I just got fired, have lost touch with my family, need perpective through humor" -click on the shopping cart!. Nigel puts great honesty and wit out there for us, take advantage, there aren't that many books this good.

Loved this book. The odyssey of the author's year off work is rich, poignant, warm, and at times hilarious. Highly recommended for everyone. Great Father's Day gift idea!

This book is disarmingly funny, genuine and touching. A must read for all generations and for anyone feeling afflicted by Affluenza. Look forward to seeing this make a huge splash in the US this summer. Great bookclub and chat show material I would have thought...buy it now!

                                Book Description

Romney Marsh, Kent in the 1700's - it was sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll! The drug is opium, the rock 'n' roll is Handel and the sex is - well, the same as it has always been! There are no lawmen, no policemen and ordinary people are taxed on their favourite commodities to finance a succession of costly overseas wars. The time is ripe for any man (or woman) to chance their luck and cross the Channel to bring over untaxed goods from France. 'Men of Sorrows' is a novel based on the true adventures of the Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers - the largest and most successful smuggling gang of their time. Arthur and William Gray are brought up in poverty until Arthur chances upon a smuggling gang and finds his future with them. Beth Stone also joins them - beautiful, high-born Beth whom Arthur has loved all his life. But his brother Will also loves her. This story of love, comradeship, betrayal and treachery takes place amid the sweeping, eerie beauty of the mysterious Romney Marsh.
