Book Description

Throughout East Asia, the growth process and its sources are changing in a number of important respects, especially for middle- and high-income economies. Growth is increasingly coming from the strength of innovative activities in these economies rather than from factor accumulation as in the past. Such innovative activities—especially in producer services and the creative industries—are concentrated in high-tech clusters in globally linked cities.

Drawing on a wide range of literature and on interviews with firms, this book explores these issues with a focus on six East Asian cities: Bangkok, Beijing, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo. It suggests how policies and institutions can induce and furnish an urban environment that supports innovative activities. A valuable resource for researchers, urban planners, urban geographers, and policy makers interested in East Asia, Post-Industrial East Asian Cities presents the latest findings on creative industries in East Asia and their effect on economic growth.

4 out of 5 stars be diverse and highly skilled.......2007-06-11

East Asia has developed tremendously in 50 years. Giving rise to the megacities considered here. Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, Shanghai, Seoul and Bangkok. The book considers these to be global cities. Deeply tied into the rest of the world via communications and transport networks. With international trade often having aided their rise.

But the real questions raised by the book concern the future of these Asian cities. How will their economies continue to grow? The word postindustrial is liberally tossed around. What it means here is that the mega-industrial projects that might have helped the cities get where they are today, are not necessarily the way to go forward. Instead, the cities should encourage innovation and the development of a highly educated workforce. Skills need to be upgraded, outside the manufacturing context. To this ends, major universities located in the cities can be a vital enabler. Some cities, like Shanghai, with 839 research institutes, and Beijing, with 267, are well positioned in this aspect.

Another theme is that the cities should be heterogenous. In how their populations are made up. A cultural and ethnic diversity could aid in a positive social dynamism.

        Book Description

`Zoltan Acs has produced one of the major works of the past decade or two that helps to explain why cities grow. A central premise and one supported by empirical analysis throughout the book is that entrepreneurship is an important local activity that translates raw knowledge (that by the way is shown to be highly local) into ideas and start-ups that grow and underpin and sustain metropolitan growth. This is a must read for all students and scholars of urban and national economic growth and related policies.'

        - Roger R. Stough, George Mason University

`Innovation is the driving force of the dynamics of regions and cities. Innovation however, is not an autonomous miracle, but is emerging out of knowledge creation and adoption. Thus, knowledge production is at the heart of economic progress. Zoltan Acs offers in this book a brilliant overview and convincing empirical evidence on the fascinating relationship between successful entrepreneurship and knowledge-intensive areas. His ideas form a unique blend of elements from the new economic geography, the new growth theory and the new innovation economics theory and provide a thorough analysis of the changing economic landscape in the US.'

        - Peter Nijkamp, Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

`Acs's book demonstrates the link between entrepreneurship, geographic proximity and economic growth. It identifies the missing links from a wide range of viewpoints and with a modern empirical flavor. It shows that a proper environment is needed for the idea to start a firm and to contribute to the economic development of this environment. Acs provides vital reading for academics and policymakers aiming to understand the role of spillovers and clusters when explaining the growth of cities. He captures the essence of the economic dynamics of cities in the modern economy.'

        - Roy Thurik, Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands

This new and original book by Zoltan Acs explores the relationship between industrial innovation and economic growth at the regional level and reaches conclusions as to why some regions grow and others decline. While the analysis draws on industrial organization, labor economics, regional science, geography and entrepreneurship, the book focuses on innovation and the growth of cities by the use of endogenous growth theory.

The author argues that industrial innovation is the driving force behind long run regional growth, and explores the issues of how technology and entrepreneurship can foster and promote growth at the regional level.

With its multidisciplinary approach, Innovation and the Growth of Cities will be warmly welcomed by academics and researchers alike in the areas of innovation and science, regional science and geography, entrepreneurship and evolutionary economics.

          Book Description

Examining the issues facing smaller regions and countries, John de la Mothe explores how innovation, strategy and interdependence shape their performance, competition, and futures. Innovation and interdependence are central elements of advanced and advancing economies. In our globalized world, the production of knowledge is continually evolving. This is reflected in the design of institutions and in the results on the standards of living that are achieved and sustained. It also implies new forms of competition. Increasingly, smaller countries, regions and cities that do not fit into traditional theories of growth are becoming leaders in technology-intensive products and quick followers in innovative practices. Often heavily committed to large emerging economic markets (such as China and India) and political hegemons (such as Germany, Japan, and the United States), smaller nations, regions and cities are playing an almost unprecedented role in the shape of things to come.

4 out of 5 stars For parents everywhere........2005-09-13

The book is informative and well written. It challenges the imagination. In a country where geography is no longer offered to children in school it serves as beacon to a possible career choice. I gave my copy to my grandson.

5 out of 5 stars Why geography is so important.......2003-09-12

This book is the best I have seen at explaining the importance of having a working knowledge of geography. I admit to prejudice, having had Professor DeBlij for SubSaharan Geography while a student a Michigan State University over 35 years ago. Time has only increased Professor DeBlij's enthusiasm and ability to communicate his expertise.

Dr. Deblij traces the evolution of geography as a useful scholastic discipline by superbly relating its relevance to day-to-day living. Additionally, especially through his discussion of yet-to-be-born nations such as Catalonia, Coastal China, and others, he shows the path political and social evolution might be expected to take in the future. Knowing such things aids us in planning investments, travels, and numerous other actions.

Dr. DeBlij's style is the same when I had him in lectures: sprightly, organized, and very enjoyable. You will enjoy this book on first reading, and will make recourse to it frequently after that polint. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Geography.......2001-08-05

This book makes clear what a broad and diverse field Geography is, touching on the multiple issues that Geography can be used to address. The word Geography, for most people, just brings to mind maps. Geographical knowledge does begin with having an awareness of where you are on this planet in relation to where other place names are located, but as Professor De Blij makes clear to the new Geography initiate, that is only the beginning. In simple layman's terms, the author touches on everything from maps, to the forces which shape the land, weather patterns, planning cities, boundary disputes, overpopulation, nations without homelands, claims on ocean resources, the political situation in Russia and China and Europe's efforts toward better pursuing their mutual interests. His enthusiasm for his field is contagious and you will be more worldly wise for the time given in reading this book. Geographic illiteracy is more than just the inability to read a map, it is really being unaware of the great wide world around you and the many diverse peoples with whom we share it. I gladly give this book 5 stars.

Harm De Blij was my Geography professor at Michigan State University, so I am prejudiced. Even so, his brilliance is unsurpassed and I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of our rapidly changing world........1997-04-06

This book, from one of America's most popular geographers, provides an excellent overview of world geography and how it affects everyone. DeBlij discusses the use of maps, the climate, and focuses on rapidly changing areas of the world (Russia and Southeast Asia). This book is a must for anyone who wants to understand the geopolitical situation of the world today

This book, though now a decade old, still provides the interested reader with an understandable overview of a range of environmental change that we face.

The book is a publication of the National Academy of Sciences, and was written with a non-technical, but educated audience in mind. The topics are still pertinent, the concepts and problems are well defined, and possible solutions presented still bear consideration.

If you are interested in the environment, and changes that we are faced with, you ought to read this book. Topics include global warming, feeding the human population, forests and deforestation, acidification of water resources, and more.

The afterword by Gro Harlem Grundtland is a fitting end to this book.

An excellent book that still bears consideration.

                                Book Description

300 stunning before-and-after photographs that show the staggering transformation of our world.

Earth Then and Now records the dramatic way our planet has changed over the past century. On one page is a specific part of the world as it was 5, 20, 50 or even 100 years ago. On the facing page is the same place as it looks today. Each stark visual comparison tells a compelling story -- a melting glacier, an expanding desert, an encroaching cityscape, a natural disaster.

Earth Then and Now reminds us that nothing is without a cost. Highly topical and thought provoking chapters in this book include:

Concise captions explain the facts and then allow the reader to draw personal conclusions. Anyone concerned about the environment will enjoy and appreciate Earth Then and Now.

Fred Pearce in his Earth: Then and Now manages to capture the attention of anyone that picks this book up. Wonderfully done, the book compares current photos to historic photos of the same scene from various places around the globe.

Organized into 6 units or chapters ( Environmental Change, Urbanization, Land Transformation, Forces of Nature, War and Conflict, and Leisure and Culture) the images demonstrate how man can change his enviroment whether in a town or around a lake. Perhaps the most striking comparison are the images on page 30 of the Upsala Glacier in Patagonia. Having said that, there are other stunning images throughout the book. The most touching of the chapters in my opinion is the unit dealing with War and Conflict.

At 288 pages, Earth Then and Now will be a book you want to return to again and again. This would make a wonderful gift.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing yet totally captivating.......2007-09-21

I work at a library, and as I was covering this book, I just had to look inside. I'm a fan of satellite images of the Earth to begin with, so naturally my interest in this book was piqued. I only opened to a random page to take a peek, but I ended up completly hypnotized by the images and the concise captions. I literally could not put this book down. This book has an amazing magnetism to it; it draws you in and takes you for a ride around the world.

Unfortunatley, a majority of the photos and explanations reveal the horrid and destructive ways of man altering the Earth and choking the environment. If anyone is in doubt that the Earth is being ravaged, this book will make clear to anyone of any age just how abusive we are of the planet. The section on glaciers is seriously scary. The images are just unbelievable, but sadly, they show the truth.

From aerial shots of New Orleans before and after Katrina to satellite images of the recent growth of Las Vegas, this book explores not just the United States, but the world as well. Mountains after avalanches, volcanos after explosions, land after flood and drought, page after page you are assaulted with powerful imagery.

Mostly focusing on the effects of climate change and deforestation, Earth Then and Now shows the "progress" that modern man has acheived on this noble planet.

I reccomend that everyone on planet Earth read this book. It is a shocking eye-opener, and just simply unbelievable. A perfect coffee table book or addition to any library, you will not be dissapointed in Earth Then and Now.

I just hope they printed it on recycled paper...
