    Book Description

Edward Schatz explores the politics of kin-based clan divisions in the post-Soviet state of Kazakhstan. Drawing from extensive ethnographic and archival research, interviews, and wide-ranging secondary sources, he highlights a politics that poses a two-tiered challenge to current thinking about modernity and Central Asia. First, asking why kinship divisions do not fade from political life with modernization, he shows that the state actually constructs clan relationships by infusing them with practical political and social meaning. By activating the most important quality of clans—their "concealability"—the state is itself responsible for the vibrant politics of these subethnic divisions which has emerged and flourished in post-Soviet Kazakhstan.

Subethnic divisions are crucial to understanding how group solidarities and power relations coexist and where they intersect. But, in a second challenge to current thinking, Schatz argues that clan politics should not be understood simply as competition among primordial groups. Rather, the meanings attributed to clan relationships—both the public stigmas and the publicly proclaimed pride in clans—are part and parcel of this contest.

Drawing parallels with relevant cases from the Middle East, East and North Africa, and other parts of the former USSR, Schatz concludes that a more appropriate policy may be achieved by making clans a legitimate part of political and social life, rendering them less powerful or corrupt by increasing their transparency.

Political scientists, sociologists, anthropologists, policy makers, and others who study state power and identity groups will find a wealth of empirical material and conceptual innovation for discussion and debate.

      Book Description

Written in a highly accessible (and often witty) style, this groundbreaking book addresses a number of generational issues. Deal provides a description of each issue, a summary of the relevant research results, a principle that can be applied to resolve (or at least mitigate) the issue, and practical advice for applying the principle in the workplace.  Applying these principles will help everyone to work with, work for, attract, manage, retain, and develop leaders of all generations.

5 out of 5 stars Solid tactics for conquering the generation gap at work.......2007-07-19

This ambitious book, based on a seven-year survey of more than 3,200 employees, examines how different generations view the workplace. Author Jennifer Deal handles the difficult task of presenting, distilling and interpreting the data according to age group and worker status. Her use of applicable real-life scenarios is effective in helping managers implement these findings, but the presentation of research data makes for weighty reading. We recommend this book to managers who have problems with intergenerational tensions at work, though Deal concludes that the generation gap is overrated and employees of all ages desire many of the same things.

        Book Description

Coping with the challenges of global warming is a daunting task for both scientists and economists, who must understand future changes, and for policy makers, who must ultimately choose policies to balance risks and costs. Managing the Global Commons presents a unique effort to encompass economic, scientific, and policy aspects of this great geophysical experiment.

Managing the Global Commons provides a detailed analysis of the DICE model (Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy) as well as an extensive analysis of the model's results. DICE is the first dynamic model to include a closed-loop system that includes emissions, concentrations, climate change, damages, and emissions controls. The model is useful for estimating the costs and benefits of different paths for slowing climate change and for analyzing the impact of control strategies over time.

The analysis contains a number of methodological advances and major findings - most importantly the construction of a small model to encompass the primary components of the climate and economic system within an optimization framework. Also included are new techniques and results concerning the role of uncertainty and the "risk premium" involved in policies to slow global warming. In addition, the analysis derives a set of uncertain representative scenarios that summarize the large number of potential outcomes into a manageable number to be used within an optimization framework and incorporated into a contingent-commodity framework.

Nordhaus examines several different approaches to climate-change policy: no controls, economic optimization, geoengineering, stabilization of emissions and climate, and a ten-year delay in undertaking climate-change policies. Among these, there is a modest advantage of an efficient policy over no controls or a ten-year delay, while the three stabilization options would impose significant net costs. Overall, Nordhaus observes, the analysis reveals that even with major technological breakthroughs and stringent controls, the momentum of past greenhouse gas emissions coupled with great inertia in climate change policy will lead to an inevitable rendezvous with massive climate change.

          Book Description

Both a personal odyssey and a practical blueprint for new management strategies, The Soul Of A Business shows how to re-shape a business to manage for the common good: the good of the company, the good of the employees, and the ultimate good of the community that company serves.  Tom Chappell, eco-entrepreneur and co-founder of Tom's of Maine (the leading producer of environmentally-friendly personal care products in America) used his personal quest for meaning as a springboard for a new management style that emphasizes spiritual values as the basis for real commercial success. Chappell and his company have proven that working people at every level can realize personal values and meaning in their jobs without compromising excellence, and competitiveness.

          4 out of 5 stars Don't let a business take itself over.......2006-04-25

This was a wonderful book to read. After reading it I felt as though I probably know its author pretty good. Not as a friend or someone I'd necessarily like to be friends with, but he seems to be very open about his past, his present, and his beliefs. I am sure that what he discloses in this book will help any wanta-be entrepreneur or small to medium sized business owner rethink whether he or she is leading his or her company in the right direction. I highly recommend that entrepreneurs give this book a read.

Some of the issues addressed are as follows:

          1. Will the mission of the company allow the company's leader to enjoy a reasonably good state of mind or conscience?
          2. What does a CEO have to do at work to feel fulfilled?
          3. Is the CEO of the company a happy and fulfilled person?
          4. Are people who work at the company happy at work?
          5. Does the company interface well with the community in which it operates?
          6. Does the community appreciate the company?
          7. Do people trust one another who work for the company?
          8. Does much discrimination exist at the company?
          9. Is the company all about profits, or not?
          10. Is competition good?
          11. Is winning always good?
          12. Is there more to life than making a buck?

The above issues are just the first 12 that came to mind while I was writing this review. There were many more, but I'm not going to list them all here. The above issues are representative of the content of the book. Maybe the book provides answers, and maybe it doesn't. But the book is great because it reminds business people who are caught up in the rat race of making a living that there is more to business than just making a buck. What comes to mind is: joy, happiness, success, family, friends, and a legacy. Is the business damaging the world, or helping to make it a better place?

I would have enjoyed the book more if the author had not started off explaining what the book "was not." And I would have had a more positive image of the book if the author had not mentioned that he got a lot of his theory from the Harvard Divinity School. There was no need to bring the Gospels into the "story." There is no question that things that can be learned from studying the Gospels are wonderful, but the same things can be learned from other sources. So why throw a religious slant on the issues? I think the book would have been more forceful if religion had be left out entirely.

I enjoyed hearing about the author's wife, but I would have enjoyed hearing more about her thoughts on helping to run the company she and her husband co-founded. I felt a little cheated not hearing a woman's perspective on some of the issues. After all, the author points out that women should be included in management decisions, and that his wife's in fact were.

5 out of 5 stars Provides foundation to business ethics.......2000-11-13

The Soul of a Business, though lesser known than many of the myriad of business advice books, does a better job than any other in giving a foundation from which to work.

The business guru often spends an entire book telling us how to treat others. Chappell tells us what basic principles he found that led him to this position of responsible commerce.

Shelves are full of books offering cliches and platitudes on why why ethical behavior leads to a better company and eventually more profits. However, Chappell's book goes back to the root question - why should we as individuals or companies seek one kind of relationship over another? In other words, what should guide us in how we treat each other?

For a book that delivers far beyond simple diagrams and behavior modification tricks, a book that provides the philosophical foundations of Buber and Edwards to guide us in how we should interact with our employees, customers and community read Chappell's book. I ended up owning both paperback and audio tape.

4 out of 5 stars A book for the business owner who has everything.......2000-10-02

This is a nice book for anyone who owns or plans to own a business, and is seeking more than just financial rewards. Lots of companies are sharing their wealth with the rest of the world, but not many take the time to write a book about how it can be done, and how rewarding it can be. I found this book to be inspiring and entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars A wake up call for traditional, one-dimensional managers........1998-12-22

For those of us who have had difficulty reconciling our personal desires to make a difference with our career demands to turn a profit, this book connects. It's a study in managing value complexity and speaks well to the enormous rewards of striving for a goal much higher than improving ROE. Not all of us can take the same route as does Tom Chappell, but, if we're to be truly fulfilled by our business lives, we must find our own way to his destination.

4 out of 5 stars Socially conscious business survived huge corporate growth.......1998-09-14

This is the Tom's of Maine Tom Chappell. His story picks up after Tom's has become just another profit seeking business infested with MBAs and looking at the bottom line. It seems that Tom is disallusioned, depressed and goes searching for personal answers by enrolling in Harvard Divinity School. His search helps him and his wife bring the company back to the environmentally and socially conscious organization they began. His story gives some insights and suggestions on how to achieve this mind set turn around in any corporate structure.

5 out of 5 stars It's not human to be altruistic.......2000-02-13

This collection of essays explores how individuals view commonly-owned resources. The clear conclusion is that people are biologically selfish: each person sees his/her own interests as more important than the group's interests. Altruism doesn't work as a policy. This flies in the face of common wisdom. I wish this book could be made standard reading for all high-school students. It explains the population's apparently self-defeating habit of destroying their own habitat.

Like many buzzwords, 'global governance' is as poorly understood as it is popular. In contrast to most mainstream accounts, this book examines global economic governance as an integral moment of contemporary capitalism -- presenting a critical insight into its real nature and the interests that it serves.

This book begins by asking what has not been discussed in the mainstream debates and why. Drawing on a Marxist perspective, Soederberg explores neglected issues including transnational debt and the increasingly coercive nature of US aid to so-called Œfailed states'. Soederberg argues that mainstream understandings fail to engage with the wider contradictions that characterise global capitalism. In consequence, there is no explanation of the changing nature of American empire and capitalist power in the world. Furthermore, Soederberg argues that global governance acts to normalise and legitimise increasingly austere forms of capitalist expansion, which may be regarded as a deepening and broadening of neoliberalism.

Susanne Soederberg is a Canada Research Chair in Global Political Economy and Associate Professor in International Development Studies at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. She is author of The Politics of the New International Financial Architecture: Reimposing Neoliberal Domination in the Global South (Zed, 2005).

              Book Description

How can comparable food-processing plants with identical equipment, raw materials, and finished goods, generate different amounts of waste? Too often, the answer is that managers have not considered waste a function of plant efficiency. In Managing Food Industry Waste: Common Sense Methods for Food Processors, waste management expert Robert Zall shares his philosophy and techniques for monitoring and accounting for food processing waste.Plant managers too frequently recognize product recovery only in terms of finished food yields per ton of raw ingredients, or as a percentage of throughput amounts. Managers need to regularly measure waste as a separate and identifiable by-product. Improving in-plant waste abatement methods is less expensive, and far more productive, than end-of-the-pipe treatment and can substantially reduce a plant 's waste load. Managing Food Industry Waste shows food processing managers how today 's waste can become a managed resource for producing economic credits.Drawing on his forty years of experience in managing waste, Zall explains how to identify the actual losses sent to drains and sewage treatment plants, how to pinpoint which unit processes generate these losses, and how to uncover hidden losses previously dismissed as "materials unaccounted for. " An extra feature of the book is a "self-test " covering waste treatment technology; ideal for students or new employees studying waste management. Also included is a Glossary of terms used in water and waste management. The book 's common sense narrative is aimed squarely at food processing managers - this is not an engineering text about how to build and operate wastewater treatment facilities. Instead, Managing Food Industry Waste is a highly readable, management tool filled with invaluable waste management concepts and practical methods for implementation.

                  Book Description

Conflict often plays a big part in the workplace, but when anger is out of control it can destroy working relationships and create a distinctly unpleasant atmosphere. This handbook focuses on the common workplace problem situations and helps you to understand why they cause people to lose their cool. It also gives you an action plan to manage your own anger, and other people's, and to help to heal relationships which have already been damaged.
