4 out of 5 stars Review of the 2nd edition.......2000-06-21

I am a reader of the 2nd edition of this book, as I have not got the 3rd edition that , sorry, just give you some comment to the 2nd edition. I believe, however, you can glean how good the 2nd edition is. Firstly, it give some hits of writing a cover, or , what essential information should be given i your cover letter. For instance, you should tell the potential employer whet you are available to attend the intervew. Secondly, What visas/permits would you be necessary to got. Thirdly, after arrival, the first stuff you have to do is how to fight with " Customs Not only those information, it also drops the hints down, say, the issue of accommodation, public transport, insure , etc.. Indeed, I highly recommend this book to whom want to work in the UK.

Readible -- easy to use indeependent of a classroom experience. The CD that is available with this is a worthwhile supplement. (Google it if Amazon does not make the CD available)

5 out of 5 stars Great Companion Book.......2007-01-05

This is a great book especially as a companion to Mushrooms Demystified! The illustrations of the life cycles are helpful in studying for mycology exams!! Easy to read, not over my head as university senior. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Know Your Fungi.......2004-06-21

A lot of this book is about fungi reproduction, and therefore, fungi sex -- although a lot of reproduction is anamorphic (asexual). Currently, there are over 100,000 fungi described scientifically (over 10,000 species of mushrooms), but Dr. Kendrik estimates that this is less than one tenth of the Earth's mycota (fungi). This book, of course, does not discuss all 100,000 fungi. It discusses fungi classifications, and some of the most important fungi.

Fungi is omnipresent and includes mushrooms, yeasts, lichens (a combination of fungus and alga) - but it does not include slime moulds, which are basically amoeboid (without a cell wall) and do not produce hyphae. Some fungi can grow almost any place, withstanding great temperature extremes. Other fungi is so specialized it grows parasitically on the exoskeletons of certain insects. The first half of this book talks about where fungi live; what they eat; what they look like to the naked eye, and microscopically; their genetic make-up, down to DNA and RNA sequencing, and how those genes are passed on - from sex to airborne sporulation.

The second half of the book is much easier to understand, but as Dr. Kendrick points out, it helps to read the first part to understand the second part. There is a section on fungi that attack plants and fugicides used in agriculture. Don't think all fungi are bad - there is also a section on how fungi can be used as a biocontrol against insects and weeds. The last chapter talks about the commercial use of fungi, with the obvious important nod to Penicillium notatum. Cyclosporine is another important drug developed from fungi. Aspergillus niger is used to manufacture citric acid.

The sections on how fungi exploit plants and animals - - and how plants and animals exploit fungi - is fascinating. Did you know that some leaf-cutting ants and termites actually grow fungi? Some of those huge termite nests have mushroom rooms. Some plants cannot live without fungi that manufacture important nutrients for the plants.

The relationship between man and fungi is sometimes deadly, and sometimes life saving. One thing I took away from this book is to never, ever eat mushrooms from the wild unless I am absolutely certain what those are. Some deadly mushrooms look almost identical to very delicious mushrooms. Dr. Kendrick sets forth treatments for several types of mushroom poisoning. It's important to note that most of the time, mushroom poisoning doesn't show up for some time - 24 hours or more.
Dr. Kendrick also discusses an issue that I was confused about after reading the Institute of Medicine's "Damp Indoor Spaces and Mold" (May 25, 2004). The IOM did not find a correlation between mold exposure and cancer, but I was having trouble reconciling that with what I knew - that certain molds produce aflatoxins that are toxinogenic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic. It turns out that these are not conflicting views at all, since Dr. Kendrick describes these effects from eating molds that produce aflatoxins. For example, in the 1930's in the Ukraine, horses developed deadly stachybotryotoxicosis from eating contaminated hay. Of course, why would people eat contaminated food? Sometimes, it has been unwittingly, such as medieval peasants eating rye contaminated with the ergot fungus, causing St. Anthony's Fire. Other times, food shortages left people with no other choice. In some cases, such as happened with the people in Lin Xian, China, moldy bread tasted good (not so odd when you think about eating Roquefort cheese).

5 out of 5 stars 3rd Editon The Fifth Kingdom 2001.......2002-03-13

The Fifth Kingdom is indeed an excellent treatment on the fungi kingdom. A lively text makes this topic approachable to most. I would also highly recommend the CDROM Dr. Kendrick has produced to go with the text. Over 3000 colour images and animations have been included which really brings the topic to life. He has placed many of these chapters online at his site mycolog com . I would recommend a visit there to anyone who would like to learn more about either the text or CD.

I too have read this text and found it excellent. Alas, I now want to buy it (and use it as a text in my class) but it is no longer in print. I hope it is reprinted soon and if it is-BUY IT!

Book Description

On the rooftop of the world, shoe-horned into the Grand Himalayas, Bhutan—or Thunder Dragon—is a fiercely independent kingdom. Isolated, charming, peaceful and religious, the Bhutanese are a pragmatic, sensitive people who take from the West what will benefit their country and leave the rest. Only 4,000 tourists will visit the kingdom in any one year and they are strictly monitored by a government that cares deeply for its people, environment and heritage. The countryside is pristine, the lifestyle and culture have been preserved for centuries, and the love of life is abundant among the people. Few outsiders know Bhutan as intimately as Françoise Pommaret; her guidebook takes you on an incredible journey of discovery and adventure; her love of the people and the place shines through; her in-depth knowledge helps aid our understanding of why this unique land has long remained one of Asia's deepest mysteries and best-kept secrets.

• Extensively revised and updated by the world's leading expert on Bhutan who has many years' experience visiting and working in this amazing kingdom • Essential facts for the visitor including what to bring, how to book, visas, customs, climate, health and money • 67 color photographs • 3 maps • In-depth treatment of each region of the kingdom: what to see, its history and significance • Invaluable guide to trekking and mountaineering • Special excerpts include: national symbols of Bhutan, archery and other sports, ceremonial scarves, the Dzongkha language, chortens and mandalas • Literary excerpts add a historical perspective

1 out of 5 stars Get another guidebook for Bhutan........2007-04-22

This guidebook to Bhutan was not at all helpful. It is filled with tiny details which may be of interest to the devotee, but gives the average traveler very limited background. You can read about the many different kinds of chortens, for example, but you will find the discussion of Tantric Buddhism in general perplexing. The maps are not good, and no attempt is made to separate the spectacular (such as the Punakha Dzong) from the mundane (such as the Thimpu Dzong). The information on trekking is very limited and dated. Get the Lonely Planet guide, along with the Bart Jordan book on trekking-if you intend to do a trek. Bhutan is a very expensive country to visit, and you should have a better guide in hand before your visit.

5 out of 5 stars A book for appreciating and understanding Bhutan.......2006-12-04

I have traveled extensively in the Far East, but have never before to Bhutan, until now (2007). I always like to read up on places before I visit them and generally travel as independently as reasonably possible.
I purchased both this book and the Lonely Planet guide and found the combination excellent. This book has more about the places, the people and their customs and the history. Don't expect it to be a comprehensive list of places to stay and places to eat. It contrasts well with Lonely Planet's backpacker's reference book image.
I think this is a good book and doubt whether you will be disappointed if you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Cambridge 5 were really 6........2001-11-17

'Just as the three musketeers were really four so we were really six' Anthony Blunt. This book is a result of high class investigative journalism and has left me totally convinced. In regards to John Cairncross, it is my belief both Cairncross and Rothschild were traitors as Blunt admitted they were really six. Only Rothschild had the ability and position to betray the UK so totally and there certainly has been a cover up.

5 out of 5 stars Is this a Cover Up?.......2000-12-01

While browsing in a local Public Library, I came upon this very well presented, and convincing, professional account by Mr Perry, of the unveiling of The Fifth Man. I am astounded that a spy story, detailling the activities of an individual traitor, who was responsible for the greatest influence on world history ever revealed, has apparently been concealed from the history of the twentieth century. I recommend this book by Roland Perry to all interested readers of history, and to those of us fascinated by the espionage history of the twentieth century, and of the Second World War.I further recommend that the publisher of this book (Sedgwick & Jackson, London)consder reissuing this title. It is an absorbing read. This book is an astonishing revelation of History.

4 out of 5 stars Will the Real Fifth Man Stand Up?.......1999-11-07

I read this excellent book by Roland Perry some time ago and became convinced of the assignation of the role of the Cambridge University's 'Fifth Man' to Victor Rothschild. Perry's narrative was convincing and thoroughly researched. The book is an excellent read yet I, like the previous reviewer, am puzzled as to why the 'revelation' was not picked up by the press as would have been expected in such cases. I am now even more puzzled. Reading through Christopher Andrew's and Vasili Mitrokhin's book "THE MITROKHIN ARCHIVES" no mention is made of Rothschild as the Fifth Man. Instead the pre-Rothschild fall guy John Cairncross is once again fingered as the last of the Magnificant Five. Can someone tell me - who is the REAL Fifth Man?

4 out of 5 stars Food for very much more thought. Why is not available?.......1998-01-12

Some sources seem unreliable or too secretive. Not easy to confirm. Several picayune errors like timing of Cazelet & Sikorski's death. Generally leaves me very convinced, but yet the book and subject matter are unknown in Canada and the United States - Why? Has this book been suppressed I wonder. The response I received from Macmillan in Basingstoke left me with that impression. Spycatcher contained nothing compared to this book. Since reading this "library book" I have developed a new hobby, researching many other books in the genre, including several written since The Fifth Man. Some of Perry's explosive revelations have been blatently ignored. Is it possible to contact the author, or hear from him as to why this interesting subject matter has not received world-wide attention. If Victor really did do all of this, then it must surely rank him as one of the greatest influences on the entire world in this century. A family tradition, I suppose. I doubt very much that in all the century and millenium trivia which is about to be thrown at us, Victor Nathaniel Rothschild will receive one mention and that will be a travesty. Where does it leave the Rosenbergs for instance. Is it right that Maclean, Burgess, Philby and many others should shoulder what they did, whilst this powerful figure remains ultra vires? Is Mr. Perry working on any sequel to this?

5 out of 5 stars The Goatkeepers Bible.......2004-01-18

I've had a copy of this book for at least 25 years and read it over and over. It is by a Brit, but so what? Make the stretch. It covers so many aspects of the subject that transcend goats that it would be informative to anyone interested in land management and animal husbandry in general. He deals with concepts of nutrition ecology and health hardly ever dealt with today, such as alternatives to the use of mainstream comercial feeds, rearing methods and things too numerous to mention, and all from a unique perspective. A true lover of goats. It's THE Bible of goats, written back in 1957 and never equaled to my knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars The BIBLE for goatkeepers........2003-06-27

This is a highly technical treatise oriented especially for Brits. Don't let that scare you though - it is a terrific book worthy of shelf space on any serious goatkeeper's library.

I have not found a better source within one book for dairy goat information.

You'll find a lot of useful information if you're wishing to learn about dairy goat farming. If, however, you also want to learn about meat goat production, buy Raising Meat Goats For Profit by Gail Bowman.

4 out of 5 stars Highly technical in spots, but with a wealth of info..........2002-10-24

This is a reference for a serious goat owner. It is not one I'd recommend for someone just getting into goats. But if you're really serious about your caprines, this book is a must-have.

The topics covered include: Control and Housing of Goats; Principles and Practice of Feeding; Selection of Breeding Stock; Breeding Problems; Disease and Accident; Milking and Dairy Produce; Meat, Leather, and Fleece; Goat Farming Systems; Crops for Goats; Goats for Export; Harness Goats; and more.

There is a thorough index, a bibliography, and several appendixes. The info is presented in a rather dry manner, but is very useful. There are lots of great diagrams, charts, and pictures. It's just a ton of good information. The only major fault I can find is that being published in Great Britain, it does use some terminology unfamiliar to most Americans, and doesn't deal with the US at all. But that's ok, we have enough other books which cover those topics.

Bottom line, if you're looking for a really good, technical reference book on goats of all types, this is an important one to add to your library.

3 out of 5 stars Better Suited for Brits.......2001-10-03

Lots of good anecdotal advise, even humourous at times. The chapter on goat health problems, poisons, and antidotes has proven useful, and is well organized. Genetic discussion on link between hornless goats and sexual malformity is thorough and necessary.

However, the book is written for a British reader, and lots of the medicines, practices, and even forage crop names, are different in the US. (e.g. lucerne = alfalfa) Delves heavily into dairy goats and dairy farming, but meat goat farming (Boers, Kikos, etc.) is only cursorily mentioned. The section(s) on nutrition is excessive for the average goat farmer, and the copious information about UK regulations is useless to the US reader.

This volume presents seventeenth-century Parliament as an institutional event that generated great interest both within the gates of the Palace of Westminster and the country at large. The volume includes unpublished notes and diaries of the 1604-10 Parliament by Sir Edward Montagu, Sir Robert Cotton and Sir George Manners; committee lists that highlight the apathetic attitude of MPs and the chaotic nature of the nascent bureaucracy; and the translation of two letters from the Spanish Ambassador, Gondomar, to the Infanta that detail the personal nature of James I's kingship.

This book is a collection of the diary letters of Austen Chamberlain from 1916 to 1937. These letters provide a valuable insight into the political life of one of the leading Conservative politicians of the inter-war period, and constitute a detailed record of Conservative and national politics at this time. They provide particularly valuable personal accounts of key events such as the negotiations of the Irish Treaty in 1921, the troubles leading to the Carlton Club revolt of October 1922, the Locarno agreements of 1925, the leadership crisis of 1930-31, and the backbench campaign against the German threat in the 1930s.
