Book Description
The latest edition of this comprehensive publication concentrates on the practical applications of fracture mechanics to fracture and fatigue control in structures, emphasizing the driving force and the resistance force. It also examines fitness for service, or life extension, of existing structures whose design life may have expired but whose actual life can be continued. Finally, it provides case studies for the practicing professional engineer or graduate engineering student, which illustrate the effects of toughness, constraint, loading rate, failure analysis, and other factors that demonstrate the application of fracture mechanics to real-world structures. Five sections cover: Introduction to Fracture Mechanics; Fracture Behavior; Fatigue and Environmental Behavior; Fracture and Fatigue Control; and Applications of Fracture Mechanics - Case Studies.
Customer Reviews:
A very incomplete, but interesting book.......2007-09-23
This book is very good at showing how basic fracture mechanics can be used to understand real fatigue and fracture problems in construction grade steels. The down side to this book is that the authors tend to promote their point of view and give little attention to other points of view. For example the authors spend numerous pages on their CVN to fracture toughness prediction method, yet give the master curve method only a few sentences, and ignore most of the other 20 some CVN to fracture toughness prediction methods that can be found in the literature. The reader might want to also keep in mind the most of the information in this book is based on late 1980's technology in the U.S. construction steel industry.
Mechanical and aerospace fatigue/fracture engineers will probably not find much useful information in this book.
A "practicing engineer's" Fracture Mechanics!.......2002-06-23
This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer who wants to use fracture mechanics to solve fracture and fatigue problems used in industry today. The author explains fracture mechanics and fatigue in terms the practicing engineer uses on a daily basis. For example, different material properties used in fracture mechanics are compared to Hook's Law, yield strength, and tensile strength, material properites common to structural engineers.
Also, the author gives precise definitions of fracture and fatigue, how it can be used during the design phase, why structures fail structurally, and how to use fracture and fatigue analysis to solve these real-life problems.
Excellent Book.......2000-04-04
Excellent for practical engenieers that face fracture mechanics problems and need to solve it very quickly. Tons of experimental data and estimations from simple-->cheaper test to get important proprieties as KIc. Very general book covers a lot of subjects as weldings, inspections routines and many others briefly.

Review for: Metal Fatigue in Engineering.......2007-09-14
Stephens tries to capture as much information in this book as needed for the practicing fatigue engineer. It's a great book to have on the shelf.
One of the main references for modern Fatigue Analysis.......2005-10-23
Very good book. It tackles all the main aspects of modern Fatigue Analysis. The atentive reader, following the text with a paper and pencil besdies, will extract valuable ideas for procedures. I am looking forward for books written in the same style.
Great overview with engineering data!.......2003-05-06
If there is a single book on *just* metal fatigue for your shelf, this is it. The treatment of material is rigorous without being too terse or long-winded. There's an enjoyable amount of real-world experience mixed in with the text: bits of highly relevant distilled information. Plus, there is data in the appendix that is difficult to find elsewhere (aluminum, etc).
An Overview Sort of Text.......2003-02-08
There are a number of texts in this field. This one is by authors whose professional reputations are top notch. However, this book's strengths lie in their qualitative approach. It is a very good book for a short course, and introduction or overview, but for a graduate text I feel it falls short in that it is lacking in mathematics and too qualitative. That said, the illustrations of specific
types of fatigue are terrific. The thought process they use to think through a fatigue problem is very appropriate and a great approach to most problems. If you do forensics of fatigue
problems you want to create for yourself a catalog of failure modes photos and this shows you how to start. With great examples of a number of different types of failures.
Alternative texts for a more quantitative approach that I would
recommend, are Bannantine's and Comer's books for undergraduate
engineering students, or Norman Dowling's book for graduate students.
Still, I own the book and am glad I do. So I give it 3.5 stars.

Dr. Michael Stevenson.......2001-12-26
This text provides perhaps the most concise and authoritative resource for the field of Metallurgical Failure Analysis that I have read. Rather than apporaching failures from a cookbook perspective, that is only linking cause to failure through single case histories, this author presents the fundamental concepts of the discipline and suplements them with appropriate examples. After reading the book, I am considering using it a text to a course that previously could only be approached with personal course notes. This is the most comprehensive and fundamentally organized book I have read in years. Well worth twice the price.
Book Description
The first book to present current methods and techniques of fatigue analysis, with a focus on developing basic skills for selecting appropriate analytical techniques. Contains numerous worked examples, chapter summaries, and problems. (vs. Fuchs/Stevens).
Customer Reviews:
Well Written but Problems with the Problems.......2001-08-01
I have used this text three times for teaching a fatigue course.
This text is well written. It is clear and understandable in the presentation of concepts. It covers the right amount of material for a one semester undergraduate elective course in fatigue, however, it's too basic for gradutate level study. The three apporoaches to fatigue life analysis (stress-life, strain-life, and crack growth) are clearly explained along with a cursory but useful coverage of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics. Examples are clearly laid out. One nice feature is the summary of important concepts and equations at the end of each chapter. Another nice feature is chapter 6 which compares and reviews the strenths and limits of applicability of each method.
A full chapter should be added regarding the statistical considerations of fatigue analysis (this important topic is completely skipped). The notation used is inconsistent and confusing at times, particularly with regard to stress/strain amplitude versus range. The homework problems are sub-par. There are relatively few numerical problems compared to typical texts. There are incompletely defined problems and misleading/confusing problems. This is the weakest part of the text.

Either there's something about the desert that inspires people to eloquence, or else eloquent people are naturally drawn to the desert. Whatever the order, the sere sands and barren spaces of deserts the world over have prompted a wonderful assortment of fine writing, here collected in one book. There are tribal folk tales plus pieces by Bruce Chatwin, Richard Byrd, Edgar Allan Poe, Teddy Roosevelt, Marco Polo, Pablo Neruda, Luis Borges, Herodotus, Pliny the Elder and lots more.
Book Description
The Sierra Club Desert Reader is the inaugural volume in a new series of literary celebrations of the Earth's biomes -- the major ecological communities that have shaped the collective human experience.
This unprecedented, global anthology of fiction, poetry, folklore, natural history, travel commentary, and more, collected and introduced by a preeminent environmental writer, demonstrates the desert's power to enthrall and inspire our finest thinkers and writers.
Represented in this distinguished volume are poets from ancient China (translated by Ezra Pound), Egyptian inscriptions, the logs of Captain James Cook, and the chilling fantasies of Edgar Allan Poe. Among other names drawn from many genres are Charles Doughty, Marco Polo, Mark Twain, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, T. E. Lawrence, Bruce Chatwin, Edith Wharton, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Jorge Luis Borges, as well as classic desert advocates Mary Austin, John Muir, and Edward Abbey.
Avowed desert rats and the city-bound -- anyone drawn to the magical realm of open skies and space and dust -- will find The Sierra Club Desert Reader a trove of literary riches.
