    Book Description

The defense industry has, to some people's surprise, the broadest and most sustained set of ethics programs of any sector of American business today. Lockheed Martin, which specializes in a host of high-technology products and services for the federal government, has dramatically escalated its formal ethics and business conduct program since the mega-corporation was formed through a merger in 1995. The Ethics and Business Conduct Division employs 65 "ethics officers" in sites around the United States, and it requires the firm's 130,000-plus employees to devote at least one hour per year to consideration of the ethical issues of the business, at a cost of millions of dollars per year.

Daniel Terris spent two years researching Lockheed Martin materials and interviewing its ethics officers and ordinary employees to develop this rich case study of the ethics program at this powerful global corporation. This study begins with a survey of American attitudes toward ethics in business over the past century, raising the question of whether ethics can be genuinely built into the modern mega-corporation. Terris then develops a portrait of Lockheed Martin--its history and the nature of its far-flung businesses--turning at last to its ethics program, which was created following a series of bribery, overcharging, and corruption scandals in the 1970s and 1980s.

By 1996, Lockheed Martin had in place some dull, preachy ethics programs designed to provide basic information on telling right from wrong in business practice. But then-CEO Norm Augustine wanted to liven things up, so he turned to an unlikely source of inspiration: the irreverent Dilbert comic strip. The company came up with a board game that resembled Clue, but used Dilbert characters to explore ethical case studies drawn from real-life Lockheed Martin incidents. Terris examines the success of the board game, as well as subsequent efforts including special workshops, a film festival, and biennial ethics surveys to engage employees in broad-based discussions of ethics at work.

Although Terris applauds Lockheed Martin's ethics program as "gloriously democratic" in its focus on the responsibility of every worker for the ethical dimensions of his or her actions, he is concerned that the broad-based focus tends to divert attention from the ethical responsibilities of senior management and the moral complexities of collective decision-making. While he admires the ambitious scope of the program, he notes that the corporation's definition of "ethics" focuses on individual behavior rather than on the impact of the corporation's broader policies on local, national, and global communities. The ultimate effect of such programs may be to create more ethical business practices--but, ironically, at the expense of the public good.

5 out of 5 stars Choose Your Own Adventure.......2007-09-10

These books are fantastic - I have fond memories of them from my childhood. As a school teacher, they are a wonderful read aloud. I let the children vote everytime there is a choice. They think they're great!

5 out of 5 stars Great reading for people of all ages.......2007-09-03

We have read Choose Your Own Adventure 1-6, and our 7 year old son, my husband & I were glued to every book. The books are well written, interesting & intriguing. Not too scary but gripping. We highly reccomend these books to everyone. They can be read & reread, a real plus.

1 out of 5 stars NOT the original books.......2007-04-20

My children have been enjoying some of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books from the 80's, so when I saw this rerelease of several classic books for such a reasonable price, I bought it for them. Well, apparently R.A. Montgomery wasn't able to get the rights on the original illustrations, so he had a bunch of freelance designers from Thailand draw replacement pictures for each of them, and they are AWFUL. Not just 'different,' but shockingly, unignorably BAD -- they look like cartoons drawn carelessly by teenagers, with no sense of proportion, anatomy, lighting, or anything else. The drawings in "Mystery of the Maya" are not bad but most of the others are so terrible they render the books unreadable. Leaving them unillustrated would have been better than this. Find used copies of the originals (most of which are for sale cheap on Amazon) or just pick something else to read.

2 out of 5 stars Paths Too Short.......2007-03-30

You make one or two choices and the book is over. They should only have a few endings and make each path longer.

    5 out of 5 stars My 9-year-old LOVES these.......2007-01-10

We bought these books for our son because we remembered how much we loved them at his age. They are much quicker reads than I remember, but he loves them, so they get 5 stars. One book takes him less than 45 minutes to get through. He hasn't gotten to the stage where he goes back and makes different choices yet, but I'm sure he'll become even more fond of them then.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book before purchasing a kayak.......2007-04-02

I like to browse the boating sections of outdoor stores and listen to the staff recommend equipment to people just getting started in kayaking. It can be a terrific learning experience and the best stores will always recommend good instructional manuals and the importance of taking lessons. The one book they always seem to suggest is Shelley Johnson's Sea Kayaker's Handbook. It covers all the basics but goes one step further. For instance; it is commonly explained that "the longer a boat is the faster it will go and the better it will track". There is a sidebar entitled "It isn't so simple" which carries the explanation a little further. Another section covers how to handle wind. Reading this section would be very helpful to a new paddler purchasing their first boat because one of the basic decisions is whether to have a rudder or skeg. A little knowledge here could save a lot of money and make the sport much more enjoyable. Read this book, ask questions of a knowledgeable salesman, buy a boat, take a lesson or two, have fun, see you on the water!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive reference for new sea kayaker.......2006-09-07

Prior to getting this book I had one lesson and had paddled five or six times mostly in ocean harbors and estuaries. I have paddled several times since. I have done a fair amount of small boat sailing and canoeing before taking up kayaking.

The Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook did a great job helping to fill in my knowledge of kayaking in general and to help "remind" me of some of what I learned in my lesson. It is well put together and has a nice mix of anecdote and information, with more of the latter. The book is specific to sea kayaking which I also appreciated. I am not terribly interested in white water kayaking and didnt want a book that wasted my time with more then casual information on the subject.

    Hightlights for me:
    - Detailed and well presented information on kayak design and construction.
    - Nice explanations of paddle technique I was actually able to apply after I read the book (as a supplement to my lesson).
    - Informative chapters on navigation and logistics without belaboring the subjects.
    - Interesting side-bars going into more detail on one point or another throughout the book.

I think the best thing about the book is Shelley's easy going yet informative writing style. The illustrations and photos were clear and useful. The tone of the book was that of a very well informed friend rather then some kind of uber-kayaker. This book worked for me. Good luck in your paddles!

    Regards,

    Chris

    Book Description

High adventure and chick lit combine as billionaire tycoon Jake Eastland nears the end of a long life of shady dealings, lost love, and failed relationships, and is given one final chance to atone. Themes of greed, lust, guilt, family karma, and the power of forgiveness play out as a granddaughter arrives whose relationship with Jake could change everything for both of them. This sprawling epic adventure of feuding families, prohibition rum-runners, and present-day treasure hunters is equally thrilling and heart-warming.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This novel's mysteries unfurl with grace.......2007-10-11

The Secret Ever Keeps opens with a great start, the opening lifting off the page and not mired with a huge amount of exposition. This technique pays off in Tirrell's very readable, though flash-back filled, story of family wounds and secrets and adventure. Through the alternating views of a grandfather and granddaughter, the reader is immersed in the history of rum runners during the age of prohibition, with family dynamics and loyalties playing out across generations. If you enjoyed the unraveling mystery of Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind, you will also love this story.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret is Out.......2007-10-08

Old age and the infirmities that come with it make one look back over one's life and wish for a way to atone for sins that seem never to leave us. We find ourselves remembering the wrongs we did and even consider tracking someone down to say I'm sorry. Old age brings with it cataracts, declining sight and aural affliction but it also brings with it a view of our past that is clear and becomes even clearer when we know not to buy green bananas.

Art Tirrell blends these elements into a fascinating story of forgiveness and redemption between two separate generations. Jake Eastland was a notorious rum running bootlegger during prohibition. It took a hard, ruthless man to make it in those turbulent days and Jake exemplified such a man. He did things that now, as he crosses off his remaining days, he wishes to atone for.

Tirrell sets the story in the waters of Lake Ontario where Laurel Kingsford is hunting for the whiskey Jake lost a half-century earlier completely unaware that the careless whiskey handler was her own grandfather. And, then they find an 18th century wreck and things get dicey.

It's an exciting story but its real charm is the way Jake comes to terms with his own life and the forces that drove him. He forgives himself which for most of us is very difficult.

Tirrell draws crisply defined characters and makes them live in our imagination. The secret is out - The Secret Ever Keeps is a secret no longer.

    5 out of 5 stars Art Tirrell's fantastic book.......2007-10-08

I sail out of Rochester, NY, and found "The Secret Ever Keeps" by Art Tirrell to live up to its promise. This easy to read adventure novel is a fast paced book that is hard to put down.

I related to the areas on Lake Ontario as described in the book. At one point even Rochester was mentioned. Most of the action takes place at the port of Oswego. I can picture it now in my mind. Art knows his way around the lake.

I recommend this book for anybody that has sailed Lake Ontario. You won't be sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant underwater scenes...tremendous suspense!.......2007-09-14

In The Secret Ever Keeps, Art Tirrell weaves a rich story of a bitter family rivalry, Depression Era wheeling and dealing, and a thrilling underwater treasure hunt. Set on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, the novel shifts effortlessly between the present and the 1930s. Jake Eastland, a hard-nosed billionaire nearing the end of his life, attempts to make amends for his unscrupulous dealings in the past by reaching out to his sole living relative, a young woman who is unaware she even has a living grandfather. As they get to know each other, their disparate pasts arise to haunt them.

Tirrell's depiction of their slow-growing relationship is delicate and moving, but it is the suspenseful plot that keeps one flipping the pages. Tirrell quite simply writes the best underwater scenes I have ever read. He takes the reader down into the depths, and no matter how unfamiliar one is with this eerie, potentially deadly setting, one feels one knows exactly what it would be like to dive into the bowels of a sunken ship, to get one's line snagged or air cut off, to be caught and whipped away by a sudden current. Suffice it to say, you'll be breathless, until the secrets and ancient treasures are revealed.

The Secret Ever Keeps is a terrific debut novel for Tirrell. I know he has another in the works and can't wait till it hits the shelves.

The above is from an Amazon CA review by Meg Westley of Stratford, Ontario.

4 out of 5 stars You can run, but you can't hide.............2007-07-01

Art has written a beautifully paced book that effortlessly leads the reader through the dubious dealings of Jake, the aging head of the Eastland family. Secret is both intriguing and complex but Art's composition never leaves the reader out of touch. Ultimately we are reminded that no matter where we are, our past is never far behind and it is always best to turn to face it.

          This is a fascinating book.

It is a collection of recollections from growing up in the Jerusalem and Galilee, Rhode Island area in the 1940s and 1950s. It is a collection of short stories.

The book recounts lising a ship. Another run over by a large Russian trawler, the dangers of fishing for swordfish, hauling up a torpedo, hauling up a WWII era plane with the crew still in their seats, sighting a German submarine, and so on.

As it is a collection of short stories, it is a great book to also leave out on a nightstand in a guest bedroom for overnight guests to enjoy.

I will make a trip to the Jerusalem and Galilee, RI area soon to see the area.

          5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-11-04

All of Poyer's books are worth reading. The characters are multi-faceted and one can identify with them. He writes of subjects that he knows well. That said, one shouldn't read them when feeling low. They do get into the dark side of humanity.

3 out of 5 stars 80 percent fantastic, disappointing finish!.......2005-03-28

I couldn't put this book down for the first 300 pages. Gripping story, great characters, realistic depictions of navy life. Then came the attempt at courtroom drama, which to me, was a total waste of time. My advice is to read the book for the wonderful story, and then skip straigh to the Epilogue to find out how the court martial was resolved. You'll thank me for the hours of your life that I've saved you.

4 out of 5 stars Great naval chiller.......2003-10-22

In "The Circle", a young Junior navy officer finally goes to sea. Unfortunately for everybody aboard, the officer is Dan Lenson, the hero of a series of books by Dave Poyer. I've only read a few of the Lenson books, but I've enjoyed them (though I'm pretty sure I wouldn't last a day trying to live through one). Befitting his rank, Lenson's first assignment is the Ryan - an aging destroyer that can barely pull out of port without losing power. Once underway, Lenson begins to learn the art and toil of running a USN ship - its complex mechanics and the labyrinthine passages of its crew. Instead of the Russians (the novel is set in the late 1960's) Lenson must fiercely contend with hustlers among his crew - who deal drugs or otherwise act in manner unbecoming of USN personnel; there are also some officers who prefer sailing with a criminal element, and never stop dreaming of ways to exploit it. Ryan's commander is a sage and noble captain, but Poyer makes it clear that even he may not have a full grasp on what his ship is up against. Soon, with all of its inner pressures kept under control, the Ryan heads for the stormy arctic waters of "The Circle". Lenson must now face the horrors of the polar seas, a possibly rogue Soviet submariner, the shift ones on his own ship and his own inexperience.

"The Circle" was a great read. Poyer inundates you with naval jargon yet manages to sustain a narrative of rare emotional force (for technothrillers anyway). Even if you don't know what's going on, you can at least taste the salt spray. The story is actually composed of two halves, and I agree with the reader who found the first half the better one. Still, Poyer's prose and characters keep you from going into skim mode, and keep "The Circle" from becoming one of those novels whose story seems lifted from an issue of "Jane's all the world's ships". If you loved "The Bedford Incident" or "HMS Ulysses", you've got to get "The Circle".

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this book.......2003-07-14

I started with The Circle and plowed through all of the David Poyer books I could find. I enjoy his writing. Some times it gets a little technical for me, but I have actually picked up some information along the way because of his writing and I have been able to enjoy other authors of military books.

3 out of 5 stars First half great, second half drags.......2002-07-13

The first part of the book is men versus the relentless sea. An aging World War II era destroyer sails into the Arctic circle in the middle of winter. It is a savage story of men against the sea and men against each other. You can see the ice building up on the decks and feel the wind cutting through their foul weather gear.

But the book turns on the accident that occurs later in the book and the subsequent court-martial. I thought the ending dragged a bit.

            Book Description

Ginger is fed up with life on dry land. One morning, Charlotte and Tim wake to find a note saying he’s run away to the high seas. They set off to find him, but with no money, the only way they can do it is to sign on with a ship’s crew. A terrible fog surrounds their ship with disastrous results — but the adventure is just beginning! Ardizzone’s witty prose and illustrations form a lively portrait of the comical, but always exciting, escapades.

5 out of 5 stars Seaworthy excitement and drama.......2001-02-01

Edward Ardizzone is skilled at describing children's adventures that are harrowing, exciting, and original. Tim is a nice boy and a loyal friend. He lives a comforting, cozy English daily life in a seacost town - and also has amazing adventures. Modern kids aren't awfully familiar with life at sea, and certainly no one my children knew could set out into the world in order to search for a friend who had left home. Ardizzone's locales and situations manage to seem exotic, yet totally reasonable. We were pulled into this story. The plot is complex enough, the action is convincing and, as usual with Ardizzone, the denouement is pleasing without being Milquetoast. The story can withstand repeated readings, which is a nice plus, since your child might want to hear it repeatedly. In addition the pen and ink drawings, with watercolor wash, are a constant treat for adults and kids.
