Must-have reference manual for the PE.......2007-07-28
I took the April 07 exam and passed. There's no better reference to have for such a comprehensive exam and many other test-takers I saw had the same book. My study regimen consisted of two months of quality studying. The best way to study - do problems, problems, problems! I used this manual, the NCEES sample questions and solutions, Six-minute solutions, Camara's practice exam, and Prof. Ken's free morning question set. On two saturdays before the exam I set aside 8 hours and took the practice exams to get myself disciplined and prepared, and it really helped.
Great Reference - The one book to make sure you have at test time!.......2007-06-22
I just passed the PE exam this spring and highly recommend this as a reference. I picked it up based on the positive reviews from pretty much everyone I talked to who had taken, or was taking the test. It provides a great overview of almost every topic in electrical engineering.
As you know the PE test is 80 questions - 40 in the morning, 40 in the afternoon. Each section takes 4 hrs. - dividing it out, that's only 6 min. per question. Obviously you don't have a lot of time to go searching through a ton of reference material to try and dig for answers. This book is logically laid out, and once you get to know it well, you can easily flip right to the topic you need.
My suggestion for passing the test can be summed up in three words: study, study, study! I would recommend getting this book along with the problems book and the NCEES Sample Test book. Give yourself a few months (I know, sounds ridiculous, but a few times a week studying is better than not passing) to gradually go through all the problems. By that time you'll be in the zone and you probably won't need the book for most of the problems - you'll already know what to do.
Get the 7th ed. Reference Manual and the book of Practice Problems - they will thoroughly prepare you for the morning exam, while you will probably want to get some other reference material for whatever afternoon section you are taking (did you save all those books and notes from college?) The Sample Exam and the NCEES sample exam are pretty similar to the real thing, so I would take a look at those for the afternoon session.
Study hard, and good luck!

excellent for the morning session.......2006-12-13
I took and passed the PE in 2006. I think this reference book is definitely worth having in your possession on the exam (at least for the morning session). It provides a concise overview of most of the important topics on the exam. However, I was NOT satisfied with the many sample exams and additional problem sets available. For this reason, I decided to generate my own sample PE exam and to provide it free-of-charge (at klkaiser).
Book Description
The sixth edition of the Electrical Engineering Reference Manual has been completely revised and expanded for the new exam format. It provides a comprehensive review for the new breadth-and-depth electrical and computer PE exam, and makes studying for the exam as efficient as possible. The book's coverage of topics prepares you for the exam's scope of subject matter, and the 374 solved example problems illustrate solution methods. The manual's breadth of coverage, combined with its excellent index, make it an invaluable time-saver during the exam.
In addition, you'll find these features in the Electrical Engineering Reference Manual:
Introduction to the current exam format, content, and organization
A suggested study schedule, plus tips for successful preparation
Hundreds of table, charts, and figures providing data at your fingertips With the Reference Manual and its accompanying products, you can be confident of using the best preparation materials available for this PE exam. It won't take the work out of the preparation process, but it will make your study time as productive as possible.
For practice problems coordinated with this manual, order Practice Problems for the Electrical and Computer Engineering PE Exam (ISBN 1-888577-57-6). Both these books are part of Professional Publications's Engineering Review Series, used by over 700,000 engineers to pass their licensing exams.

a wealth of information and a major help on the exam. Every single person I saw at the exam had this book, well worth it!
Electrical Engineering Reference Manual for the Electrical and Computer PE Exam, Sixth Edition.......2006-11-09
Great book.
helpful but not sufficient.......2006-11-09
I took and passed the PE in the fall of 2006.
Sufficient, but not great.......2006-11-07
Understand that 'sufficiency' is going to be totally subjective. In my case, I was 30 years post-BSEE, just took the FE last spring, and the PE in October '06. I had this book, and also a sample exam book, and the 'six-minute solutions.' But mostly only browsed through the others. My total study consisted almost exclusively of plowing through this book front-to-back, and I used only this book on the exam. A dictionary of network terminology might have been useful (for PM exam, computers), but otherwise this was enough. While it was interesting and useful for some of the areas that I wasn't familiar with, I didn't consider keeping it after the exam as a reference; any books on those specific subjects would be much better. IMO the exam was not as difficult as I'd feared. Other folks carried dozens of books to the exam; for me, this one was sufficient. [BTW, klkaiser's sample exam appears to be very representative of what I recall of the exam, recommended][BTW, notice that there is now a 7th edition of this book.]
You could do better.......2006-06-28
This book is well-written and has a lot of pertinent information inside, but I feel like I wasted my money buying this book. I have never really used it when preparing for the exam; instead, I have been using my undergraduate textbooks which are far more uselful in preparing for the exam. So only buy this book if you have sold back your undergrad books or if they were horribly written.
Book Description
Practice Problems for the Electrical and Computer Engineering PE Exam contains more than 430 practice problems for the new-format electrical and computer engineering PE exam. Fully-explained, step-by-step solutions are provided. The problems are correlated with the topics covered in the Electrical Engineering Reference Manual, 6th ed. (ISBN 1-888577-56-8). With this book, you will gain problem-solving practice for the exam. In addition, you will see not only what the correct answer is, but why it is correct and the most efficient way to solve the problem.
Customer Reviews:
Not very useful... doesn't represent the exam questions........2004-10-30
This book is not very useful in either studying for the exam, or as a reference while taking the exam. I think you prepare much better by using the 6-Minute Solutions book and Sample Exam book by the same author, and using the NCEES published Sample Exam.
The problems in this book do not represent the types of problems on the exam. The format is different, the complexity is different, and even the language is somewhat different. These problems are good for truly learning the material of the particular book section, but are not that helpful for the exam itself. Furthermore, it's difficult to tell which problems would be appropriate for the exam option you're taking (e.g., I took the Power option, should I be working all the Computer problems in this book too? Obviously I need some computer basics for the morning portion of the exam, but where do I stop?). Another shortcoming of this book is that the problems from one section to the next do not have a lot of similarity, and even appear to have been written by different people. One section will be all multiple choice, the next section will not. Also, there are a lot of multi-part problems; again, this is good if you need to completely learn the subject, but there are no multi-part questions on the exam.
Bottom line, if you are going to study for a year and work every problem you possibly can, then include this book too. However, if you want to optimize your studying time, then work problems that are as close to what will be on the exam as possible and stick to the three other books that are available for that purpose.
See my review under the Reference Manual for recommendations from someone who just took the exam.
Practice Problems.......2002-02-26
I it is a new book. It does not look like he finished working on it before it went to press. Many chapters have a blank page with the words 'There are no proctice problems corresponding with Ch. 2 ...". I have not had the time to go through it all, but I have found quite a few errors. For example Ch 61 Practice Problem #1 the correct answer is 78.23 km He forgets to multiply by 2 for the correct distance. The formula is d = sqr(17h) he aproximates this and uses d = 4.1 sqr(h) which is fine but he does not use the formula correctly.
The book will be much better after the he corrects the many errors.

Book Description
First used in 1980, "biodiversity" often describes the abundance, variety, and genetic constitution of native animals and plants, and has been linked with politics and environmental technology. Although the 1986 National forum on biodiversity brought issues of biodiversity to the fore, the inescapable need to know more about the diversity of life on Earth continues to remain unmet.
In recent years, biodiversity has influenced important scientific considerations, international agreements, conventions, conservation initiatives, political debates, and socio-economic implications. Knowledge derived from the study of biodiversity will affect the quality of life enjoyed in the future by influencing decision-making processes and aiding new discoveries.
The science of biodiversity has become the science of our future. Our awareness of the loss of biodiversity has brought a long overdue appreciation of the magnitude of our loss and a determination to develop the tools to protect our future. The
Encyclopedia of Biodiversity brings together, for the first time, a study of the dimensions of diversity. It examination of the services biodiversity provides, and measures to protect it. Major themes of the work include the evolution of biodiversity, systems for classifying and defining biodiversity, ecological patterns and theories of biodiversity, and an assessment of contemporary patterns and trends in biodiversity.
Key Features
* Distinguished Editorial Board headed by Simon A. Levin, with many other prominent scientists serving as editors
* More than 300 separate articles, covering 20 different subject areas, from Evolution to Habitats to Economic Issues--all original contributions commissioned for this work
* Articles by leading authors from major institutions of science around the world
* Approximately 1,000 figures and tables complement the text
* More than 3,000 glossary entries explain key terms
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference source, but..........2001-01-28
This encyclopedia is a dream-come-true for students and scientists alike. It is loaded with useful, up-to-date information on a wide range of subjects dealing primarily with biodiversity, but also general biology. Chapters dealing with relevant and topical terms and phrases in biodiversity are authored by internationally renowned experts in those fields. The writing is clear and all entries are suberbly illustrated and fully referenced. It is a pity that this 5-volumed work is priced so high that it will probably not make the bookshelves of many academic and research libraries (who are continually forced to cut back their budgets), let alone those of students or scientists, for whom this should otherwise be an essential reference source. The only other fault I find with it is the color plates to all 5 volumes are placed at the beginning of volume 1, which unfortunately requires a reader of a chapter in, say, volume 5, to also open volume 1 to see the plate(s) being referred to. Normally this would be a minor inconvenience, but the large weight and large format of each of these volumes make such a maneuver one that would require a large coffee table or laboratory bench to be performed correctly.

Definitely worth a look.......2000-06-07
This was an ambitious undertaking. Information available from state to state (or ____ to ____, insert the jurisdictional or geographical units of your choice) is wildly inconsistent. Land status often changes rapidly, as do what we know and what we can say about resource conditions at any given moment. "Habitats and Ecosystems..." necessarily became a historical document once it was finalized. But it is nevertheless a useful one-stop reference guide to natural America; and an intriguing browse for conservation-minded readers.
I was one of the many people around the U.S. whom Mark Crawford enlisted to provide information for his book, and I know what a chore it was for him to take what I could provide and distill it into something useful.
Of course, that means I got my copy free! - but I'm sure the book will be a useful addition to my library. I'll refer to it regularly, and I'd buy it if I didn't have it already.

Book Description
Scientists predict that the environment over the next 100 years will be threatened by severe challenges--the loss of biodiversity, expected changes in world-wide climate, and decreasing amounts of arable land and potable water for an exploding human population. All of these will greatly impact how the earth will be able to support life in the future. And at the center of these global environmental changes are developments in land use. Over the last 300 years, and in particular the last 50 years, the earth's land has been altered drastically as a result of increasing industrialization and urbanization worldwide, as well as by changes in agricultural techniques in lands under cultivation. These developments raise troubling questions about out future: How will these changes affect the sustainability of certain types of land use? How will they impinge upon critical regions, like rainforests and deserts? Will the earth be able to provide for the basic human needs of food, shelter, and water? The Earth's Changing Land: An Encyclopedia of Land Use and Land-Cover Change is an A-to-Z encyclopedia that addresses all aspects of the science of land-use change:
- Evidence of land-use and land-cover change over the last 300 years, and how these changes impact the lives of people today
- Discussions of the models and techniques that scientists use to determine how, and how fast, the earth is changing
- Entries on the scientists and organizations who study these developments and who attempt to predict what will happen to the earth in the future
- Discussions of policies and measures that can be implemented on a local level that will allow a sensible balance between sustainability and development
Written by leading scientists who have spent years studying the phenomena, the encyclopedia hopes to provide a strong foundation for understanding current controversies, and is written on a level that is understandable to scientists and other interested readers alike.

Earth's environment faces all kinds of challenges over the next century.......2006-08-07
Earth's environment faces all kinds of challenges over the next century; from the erosion of biodiversity and changes in climate to the ongoing impact of an expanding human population. Other studies have covered these issues in bits, pieces, and in depth: Our Earth's Changing Land: An Encyclopedia Of Land-Use And Land Cover Change covers all these developments as they relate to land use and life needs. Chapters survey not just land use patterns past, present and future, but draw important connections between changing human needs, changing earth conditions, and what scientists and organizations studying these trends predict for the future. Add discussions of the politics and economics involved and you have a hard-hitting 2-volume set perfect for college-level collections offering resources on environmental or land use issues alike.

At a time when concern for the environment is rapidly growing, there is also a need for informed analysis that cuts through the confusion and rhetoric surrounding discussions of environmental issues. This work does not simply focus on crises, but the management of the environment and the
exploration of the issues from many angles. This work explores the connection between human activities and the environment, assessing environmental problems and how they can and are being addressed. It clearly relates the interaction of the natural world and human society. Following an introductory
section, the work takes a regional approach. It examines key issues related to resources, pollution, land degradation, and ecosystems, as well as possible solutions to problems with prospects for research and international cooperation. With an informative and colorful assortment of over 270
photographs, maps, and diagrams, this reference will provide a clear understanding of how pollution and other environmental problems occur, as well as possible solutions.
