Customer Reviews:
Great for Educators.......2000-03-27
As a new teacher, I am a firm believer of hands-on activities; as the saying goes, "I do, and I understand." While beginning a unit on space, I wanted to make it as concrete as I could, and my kids are now able to understand some very abstract concepts - thanks to the activities in this book. Most of these activities can be modified for students of all levels; for higher-level students, teachers could get into inertia, air pressure,... My kids really loved the activity that proves how rockets work. All of the activites use materials that you already have at home.
Book Description
Why does Earth have seasons? What is a light year? Astronomy can be a daunting subject to tackle in the classroom - for student and for teacher. Project Earth Science: Astronomy was developed to suit the needs of both. For the student, hands-on, teacher-tested activities bring the concepts of astronomy down to Earth. For the teacher, background information, supplementary readings, and suggestions for integrating other disciplines provide a framework to launch a successful introduction to astronomy.

Book Description
International Weather Radar Networking covers all aspects of the subject in a collection of contributions drawn from all over the world. Of particular interest are the papers describing work in Eastern Europe and papers reviewing of the achievements of the Commission of the European Communities COST-73 project.
During the last twenty years there has been a rapid growth in the number of digital radars deployed for operational use in Western Europe. There are now around 100, of which about half have a Doppler capability, providing wind as well as reflectivity information. The international exchange of the data from these systems promises a great enhancement of the benefits to weather forecasting and commercial users.
This volume reports work being undertaken to realize those benefits and points the way to future developments of radar technology.
Book Description
Society has limited hazard mitigation dollars to invest. Which actions will be most cost effective, considering the true range of impacts and costs incurred? In 1997, the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment began a two-year study with a panel of experts to help develop new strategies to identify and reduce the costs of weather-related hazards associated with rapidly increasing coastal development activities.
The Hidden Costs of Coastal Hazards presents the panel's findings, offering the first in-depth study that considers the costs of coastal hazards to natural resources, social institutions, business, and the built environment. Using Hurricane Hugo, which struck South Carolina in 1989, as a case study, it provides for the first time information on the full range of economic costs caused by a major coastal hazard event. The book:
- describes and examines unreported, undocumented, and hidden costs such as losses due to business interruption, reduction in property values, interruption of social services, psychological trauma, damage to natural systems, and others
- examines the concepts of risk and vulnerability, and discusses conventional approaches to risk assessment and the emerging area of vulnerability assessment
- recommends a comprehensive framework for developing and implementing mitigation strategies
- documents the human impact of Hurricane Hugo and provides insight from those who lived through it.
The Hidden Costs of Coastal Hazards takes a structured approach to the problem of coastal hazards, offering a new framework for community-based hazard mitigation along with specific recommendations for implementation. Decisionmakers-both policymakers and planners-who are interested in coastal hazard issues will find the book a unique source of new information and insight, as will private-sector decisionmakers including lenders, investors, developers, and insurers of coastal property.

Book Description
This book is the result of the first comprehensive study of world wide climate fluctuations that is not primarily based on pre-existing literature reviews. The authors, employing original analysis, model runs, and data sets, use common climate change scenarios to examine the impacts on agriculture, water resources, coastal resources, forests and human health. The studies focus on the impacts of climate change in the developing countries around the world. In addition, the editors use Egypt as a case study, providing the first integrated analysis of a single country. This book will enable well-informed and up-to-date decisions by climate change researchers and policy makers.

Book Description
The challenge of our time is the greening of products. Different tools and concepts to support this process have been developed in the past decade. Among others, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) appears as one of the most instructive management instruments for gaining insight into product-related environmental impacts and for supporting an effective integration of environmental aspects in business and economy. Research on LCA was and still is focused on improving the methodology. In fact, the "LCA technique" has significantly improved over the last few years. However, this research progress did nearly not stress the application context of LCA and its embodiment into business and industry. This is precisely the primary focus of the present book. Based on the empirical information of a large survey and of 20 company case studies, the book describes the set of applications and uses, as well as the dynamics of the adoption and integration patterns of LCA within business and industry.

Description:
In Britain, some climate change models predict a shift in the climatic suitability envelope for beech (Fagus sylvatica) to the north and west, beyond its past-native range, whereas much of the current conservation effort targets beech woodlands in the south and east. Possible implications for the conservation of typical beech woodland plant assemblages were explored by comparing the occurrence of the component species in southern (inside past-native range) and northern England (outside past-native range, but within future climate-suitability envelope) through comparison of county lists of plants, and direct comparison of stands in each region. Most plants listed in the National Vegetation Classification beech woodland community tables already occur in the two northern counties' plant lists. There was also much overlap in the species recorded in the field surveys between northern and southern sites. Thus, there appears to be good potential for beech woods beyond their past-native range to develop assemblages similar to those currently valued in southern Britain. A short questionnaire survey of 47 individuals involved in forestry and conservation management in Britain suggests that while climate change is recognised as a factor that will affect future conservation management, there is less acceptance to date of a need to modify current policies and practice to take account of possible future range changes.

Description:
Understanding the composition and dynamics of soil seedbanks beneath mature conifer plantations is important for managing biodiversity in rotational forestry systems and in the restoration of former communities following the removal of tree crops. We examined the role of the buried seedbank in vegetation development after clear-felling of stands within coniferous plantation forest in eastern England. The buried seedbank of 29 mature stands planted in the early to mid 20th century on lowland heathland and marginal arable was determined by germination of seeds from soil cores (30 bulked cores per stand). Seedbank density was highly variable, with a mean of 3950 (S.D.+/-2400)seedsm^-^2. Ninety-eight species germinated, of which 37 were present in the surface vegetation of the mature stands; these 37 species had a higher density of seeds than the 61 species absent from the surface vegetation. Of those 61 species, 21 were recorded in the surface vegetation of recently replanted stands, suggesting that the seedbank may increase the plant diversity of replanted stands following clear-felling. The seedbank of mature stands was dominated by Urtica dioica and Holcus lanatus. Comparison of seeds in the top 20cm of soil between four paired mature and replanted stands showed felling and cultivation prior to replanting had little effect on either the density of the buried seedbank or the vertical seed density profile. Twenty-nine of the species recorded in the buried seedbank of mature stands were characteristic of heathland assemblages of the region, but were present at low densities. Notably, a number of perennial grass species characteristic of heathland were absent, while Calluna vulgaris occurred in the seedbank of few stands and then at low density. The potential for grass-heath restoration following clear-felling of first rotation conifer stands investigated in this study is likely to be low.
