Book Description
In recent years, Bayes and empirical Bayes (EB) methods have continued to increase in popularity and impact. Building on the first edition of their popular text, Carlin and Louis introduce these methods, demonstrate their usefulness in challenging applied settings, and show how they can be implemented using modern Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Their presentation is accessible to those new to Bayes and empirical Bayes methods, while providing in-depth coverage valuable to seasoned practitioners. With its broad appeal as a text for those in biomedical science, education, social science, agriculture, and engineering, this second edition offers a relatively gentle and comprehensive introduction for students and practitioners already familiar with more traditional frequentist statistical methods. Focusing on practical tools for data analysis, the book shows how properly structured Bayes and EB procedures typically have good frequentist and Bayesian performance, both in theory and in practice.

More like a handbook.......2007-09-07
We used this book for our intro to Bayesian statistics class at SDSU. I thought it was more like a technical manual for how to do Bayesian statistics, rather than a good introductory textbook. Recommended for researchers who want to know the nitty-gritty of MCMC and the like. Not a good textbook for a first course in Bayesian statistics. To understand what was going on in class I used Lancaster, "An Introduction to Bayesian Econometrics". Much better intuitive explanation of what is going on.
An good overview of the corps of the matter.......2001-11-20
This book features a deep and focused lesson on Bayes and Empirical Bayes Methods. It goes through the key topics as conjugate priors, MCMC methods (non iteratives and iteratives as the well known Gibbs samplining and metropolitis hastings algorithms), model selection methods (as bayes factor) and issues related as model robusteness.
The Approach is increasingly formal and deeply complex, allowing for getting the basics or diving into more complex knowledge according to your former background. You need at least a good understanding of Frequentist statistic to be able to follow the reasonings. Each chapter allow you to stop at some point without losing the thread. Last part of the book is in fact deep knowledge demanding.
The most interesting point of this book according to my very limited statistics background is that it makes good comparations with the frequentist approach (classical approaches as confidence intervals and point estimators), checking performance of either method. Even, it features some combination of both approaches getting some bayessian intervals.
As a negative point, I would say that examples are hard to follow for someone with limited bakground and too much complex. They really do not clear me up enough.
All in all, is a very profitable book for jumping into bayesian methods.
Book Description
In recent years, small groups of statisticians, computer scientists, and philosophers have developed an account of how partial causal knowledge can be used to compute the effect of actions and how causal relations can be learned, at least by computers. The representations used in the emerging theory are causal Bayes nets or graphical causal models.
In his new book, Clark Glymour provides an informal introduction to the basic assumptions, algorithms, and techniques of causal Bayes nets and graphical causal models in the context of psychological examples. He demonstrates their potential as a powerful tool for guiding experimental inquiry and for interpreting results in developmental psychology, cognitive neuropsychology, psychometrics, social psychology, and studies of adult judgment. Using Bayes net techniques, Glymour suggests novel experiments to distinguish among theories of human causal learning and reanalyzes various experimental results that have been interpreted or misinterpreted--without the benefit of Bayes nets and graphical causal models. The capstone illustration is an analysis of the methods used in Herrnstein and Murray's book The Bell Curve; Glymour argues that new, more reliable methods of data analysis, based on Bayes nets representations, would lead to very different conclusions from those advocated by Herrnstein and Murray.

An interesting and important overview of Bayesian belief networks.......2005-09-04
This book could be considered to be a non-mathematical introduction to Bayesian networks, as applied to the field of cognitive psychology. It is readily apparent that the author does not believe that traditional statistical methods, such as factor and regression analysis, are unsuitable tools for the study of how the human mind gains an understanding and knowledge of the causal structure of the world. Bayesian networks are thus brought in to replace these methods.
The author begins the book by distinguishing between `graphical causal structures,' which include structures with feedback, from `causal Bayes nets', which do not. He concentrates on the latter in the book, believing that they have great utility in psychological theory, namely in studies of adult judgment, psychometrics, cognitive neuropsychology, and in developmental and social psychology. In particular, causal Bayes nets can be used to successfully model the 'theory theory' which was developed to understand how cognition develops in infants and children. Children are of course able to learn the causal structure of the world, and this ability can be captured by the use of causal Bayes nets. In the context of developmental psychology, the emphasis in the book is on how children obtain the ability to predict and control their environment, and not on how they obtain the ability to generate explicit causal explanations.
The author gives a brief history of cognitive psychology in order to motivate the ideas in the book. The discussion is intriguing, for it sheds light on the attitudes, biases, and the frequent extreme pessimism of practitioners in the field. Some cognitive psychologists for example held to the belief that humans are unable to conform to moral or rational standards, and that even if they are able to do this in some contexts or circumstances, a change in these circumstances will suppress this conformity. Science, the ultimate in rational endeavor, is in this view an "unstable oddity" that can only be sustained if sophisticated structures of social interaction are constructed.
The author though has a realistic assessment of practice, and points to the "child scientist" as being one that has a genuine desire for the understanding and control of the environment, is not worried about competition for jobs or tenure, and thus is not unduly biased by the need for them. The "child scientist" is to be distinguished from the "adult scientist," the latter of which is distracted by societal issues that force them out of their rational equilibrium.
Most interesting, because the author is a professional philosopher, is his statement that twentieth-century philosophy does not seem to permit any concept of the logic of discovery. Scientific inquiry or investigation, hypothesis testing, etc, cannot be described algorithmically. The author though describes these views as being "quaint," and offers as proof the progress that has been made in machine learning. The study of machines or 'computational systems' that can gain knowledge of the world via its sensory inputs and 'primitive abilities' is what the author has designated as 'android epistemology.' The author characterizes 'android epistemology' as being the most ambitious project of all in artificial intelligence. What he does not mention though is that major progress has been made in this project in the last decade. Along these same lines, a newcomer to artificial intelligence will hear mention of the 'frame problem,' which involves the need for the specification of not only what changes but also what does not change under a particular action. The frame problem has been the subject of considerable debate in the artificial intelligence community, and is also an issue in the developmental psychology of infants and children.
The construction of a causal Bayes net uses the causal Markov assumption and the notion of an acyclic directed graph. The author views causes, effects, etc. in terms of concepts: The concept of the causes of a feature or collection of features; the concept of the effects of a feature or collection of features, and most importantly causes are to be distinguished from covariates. To reduce computational complexity, edges can be reduced or connections with low probability can be eliminated. Variables with a common effect can be collapsed, as well as causes with distinct effects. Features that are mutually exclusive can be represented by an abstract variable. Variables that are intermediate between other variables can be deleted if adjustments are made, and variables can be refined and coarsened if needed. Prior knowledge can be used or omitted if desired.
A sizable portion of the book is devoted to the discussion of the efficacy of human judgment in causation. The author discusses experiments that test this efficacy, and how the data is interpreted with respect to the Rescorla-Wagner model. This model has dominated psychological theories of human and animal learning for many years, but the author discusses an example that indicates problems with this model. This is followed by a discussion of the Cheng model of human judgment of generative causal power. The Cheng model can be expressed as a Bayes net, and the author gives detailed discussion on just how effective this representation can be.
The most interesting chapter of the book concerns the use of neural networks to study the effects of brain lesions. A baseline neural network is constructed that is supposed to emulate the normal capacity of the brain. This network is then altered in order to model the functioning of a damaged brain. This strategy is particularly interesting, and very important considering the enormous efforts that are currently being made to connect experimental data to neural network architectures. The author quotes theorems that indicate that the transmission functions of the neural network are really arbitrary as far as the independence properties of the network are concerned. The "lesioning" of the neural network cannot eliminate any of these independencies. These results, which seem to cast doubt on the strategy of using lesioning, do not negate the use of Bayesian neural networks to study brain lesions. These theorems do not invalidate the use of Bayesian neural networks.
Book Description
Bayesian methods combine information available from data with any prior information available from expert knowledge. The Bayes linear approach follows this path, offering a quantitative structure for expressing beliefs, and systematic methods for adjusting these beliefs, given observational data. The methodology differs from the full Bayesian methodology in that it establishes simpler approaches to belief specification and analysis based around expectation judgements. Bayes Linear Statistics presents an authoritative account of this approach, explaining the foundations, theory, methodology, and practicalities of this important field.
The text provides a thorough coverage of Bayes linear analysis, from the development of the basic language to the collection of algebraic results needed for efficient implementation, with detailed practical examples.
The book covers:
- The importance of partial prior specifications for complex problems where it is difficult to supply a meaningful full prior probability specification.
- Simple ways to use partial prior specifications to adjust beliefs, given observations.
- Interpretative and diagnostic tools to display the implications of collections of belief statements, and to make stringent comparisons between expected and actual observations.
- General approaches to statistical modelling based upon partial exchangeability judgements.
- Bayes linear graphical models to represent and display partial belief specifications, organize computations, and display the results of analyses.
Bayes Linear Statistics is essential reading for all statisticians concerned with the theory and practice of Bayesian methods. There is an accompanying website hosting free software and guides to the calculations within the book.

Hardbound. The Internet has revolutionized the way consumers and firms interact in the marketplace, and it has dramatically changed the information enjoyed by market participants at various points in the value chain. This timely volume on the Internet and e-commerce provides academics and practitioners with cutting-edge research on the "glue" that holds the new economy together. The first six chapters of The Economics of the Internet and E-Commerce examine four broad issues: the role of the Internet in fostering competition, its impact on price dispersion and on business-to-business transactions, and the importance of reputation and trust in the new economy. The last four chapters examine the impact of the Internet on the organization of firms, the efficiency of auctions in the Internet age, how consumers choose websites and acquire product information, and the growing problem of congestion on the Internet. Statistical Analysis with Missing Data, Second Edition

Book Description
Bayesian and likelihood approaches to inference have a number of points of close contact, especially from an asymptotic point of view. Both approaches emphasize the construction of interval estimates of unknown parameters. Empirical Bayes methods have historically emphasized instead the construction of point estimates. In this volume researchers present recent work on several aspects of Bayesian, likelihood and empirical Bayes methods, presented at a workshop held in Montreal, Canada. The goal of the workshop was to explore the linkages among the methods, and to suggest new directions for research in the theory of inference.

collection of papers from 1997 conference in Montreal.......2002-08-30
Likelihood inference goes back to the seminal work of R. A. Fisher beginning in the 1920s. Empirical Bayes methods originated with Robbins the the 1950s and 60s. Efron and Morris showed practical examples of its use in the mid 1970s and showed that Stein shrinkage estimators had the form of empirical Bayes estimates.
This recent workshop brought together some of the top researchers in these forms of inference. Likelihood inference, Bayesian inference and empirical Bayes inference are three different but similar forms of statistical inference. The basic difference between likelihood inference and Bayesian inference is the inclusion of a prior distribution that is multiplied by the likeihood function to get a posterior distribution for Bayesian inference. The purpose of the workshop was to explore the state of the art in each area and to try to find common ground and directions for future research. The volume includes thirteen articles by 18 authors.
This important area of research is also covered in the fine text that Tom Louis coauthored. That text is now in its second edition.

Book Description
In the early 1970s, accompanying the current wave of globalization, conservative nationalist religious movements began using religion to oppose non-democratic and often Western oriented regimes. Reasserting patriarchal gender relations presumably authorized by religion has been central to these movements. At the Fourth United Nations Congress on Women in Beijing in 1995, Muslim and Catholic delegations from diverse countries united to oppose provisions on sexuality, reproductive rights, women?s health, and women?s rights as human rights. Scholars from eight different Muslim and Catholic communities analyze the political strategies that women are employing in these contexts ranging from acceptance of traditional doctrines to various forms of resistance, religious reinterpretation, innovation, and political action toward change and equal rights.

Wonderfully Informative.......2007-07-06
I purchased this book to help me with my senior thesis in college and what a wealth of information it is. These authors have truly contributed to the ever-important area of study where politics and religion meet. I mostly read this book to better understand the political role that the Catholic Church plays in an increasingly globalized world. If you are interesting in institutional religion, global politics, the United Nations, or women's studies this is the book for you.
Book Description
This a history of the use of Bayes' theorem over 150 years, from its discovery by Thomas Bayes to the rise of the statistical competitors in the first third of the twentieth century. In the new edition, the author's concern is the foundations of statistics, in particular, the examination of the development of one of the fundamental aspects of Bayesian statistics. The reader will find new sections on contributors to the theory omitted from the first edition, which will shed light on the use of inverse probability by nineteenth century authors. In addition, there is amplified discussion of relevant work from the first edition. This text will be a valuable reference source in the wider field of the history of statistics and probability.

A good start in the career selection process.......2005-12-06
Starting a career the day after you graduate from college is one thing. Selecting a career track before you start college is another. This book, The Complete Guide to Environmental Careers in the 21st Century, is a helpful step in crystalizing your thinking.
With the explosive growth of the worldwide web, there are many, many resources available to help in this major selection process. However, this book focuses on the natural resource careers, and is fairly unique in that regard. I read the chapters dealing with my area of expertise (wildlife), and I thought the coverage was adequate, but a bit too generic. Picky, picky. I still found myself agreeing with what I was reading. I also liked the introductory chapters, and appreciated the focus on getting experience through internships and volunteering. I'd like students to do some exploring in their selection of courses, and "cross-train," or become multidisiplinary. Most students change their major at least once in their college careers, and many change their major several times. Be well grounded, and flexible in the courses you take.
Don't forget, however, that experitse is critical for success. It is not the degree that will propel you along your career track. It is what you know, how well you know it, and how you apply this information that will shape your success.
Most importantly, if you DON'T like the careers discussed in this book, switch majors now!
Outdated but still good.......2004-06-17
I suppose this is what you get when you order online. Every once in a while you don't get what you expect and I think it has a lot to do with not having the book right there in your hands before purchase. I just got this book in the mail yesterday and although I haven't got through a lot of it (50 pages or so) I can easily tell it was before Lil' Bush Jr. stepped into office and started rewriting environmental law in favor of big business favor. The book also talks (obviously) about predictions and trends in the field that may or may not still be true. I find myself reading saying "oh thats interesting, i wonder if its still true.
I know much of it has to do with me not noticing the pub. date but when you have a book with 21st century in the title I guess I kind of took it for granted.
A clearly written comprehensive guide that anyone can use.......2000-07-16
This is THE book to buy on careers in the environment. It details almost any profession you can think of, from science to social work. There are clear decsriptions off all the various careers, case studies (ie" a day in the life of John Doe, Botanist")and tons of contact foe everyone from the high school student to a PHD. I bought three books on the subject, and this one coveres all the information that was in the other two, plus it gives hints on how to go about preparing for and engaging in the job search. I am now well on my way to finding a job, and I have a clear sense of direction thanks to this book. BUY THIS BOOK AND READ IT- YOU DON'T NEED ANY OTHERS!
Excellent guide to environmental career paths.......1999-01-29
This book is a superb guide to what is often a confusing jumble of environmental career paths. From forestry to hazardous waste management to environmental education, the authors at the Environmental Careers Organization give detailed information about 11 major fields of work. In each field, they discuss major trends, career niches, salary ranges, appropriate educational background, and mini case studies. Introductory chapters have excellent advice on the job search. The annotated listings of professional assocations and other resources at the end of each chapter are by themselves worth the price of the book. Anyone considering a career in environment should have this book.
