Book Description

The history and founding of America is almost a fairy tale of providence and good fortune. As Senate Chaplain Dr. Peter Marshall has recounted in his classic book, The Light and the Glory, no other nation has been blessed with such an abundance of material wealth and spiritual heritage as the United States of America. In 1787, our Founding Fathers established a near-perfect system of representative government and sound monetary policy. Yet, as our nation enters the 21st Century there is a great foreboding that our financial infrastructure is facing unprecedented challenges in addition to serious geopolitical developments that threaten our very existence. How has this happened to the most powerful nation on earth, and what will be the likely outcome? To answer these questions it is necessary to examine the monetary history of the U.S. up to the present hour and also look back to ancient prophecies that are contained in the Bible. Here is a gripping account that will captivate and enlighten you. It is also a message of hope and inspiration that you will want to share with others. There is no need to "close our eyes" if we can confidently look into our future.

5 out of 5 stars What happened to all of our money?.......2007-10-06

Have you noticed no one is talking about social security anymore? We all know there's no money for us who have not yet retired. If you want to know why, then this book is for you. Regardless of whether you are a Republican or a Democrat, Christian or not, this book is a real eye opener. Hard to put down. Eye-opening...giving us a different perspective on long term and short term investment strategies.

5 out of 5 stars Must Reading for All Who Seek the Truth!.......2007-06-12

I have read "America's Financial Reckoning Day" and I highly recommend it!In its pages, one can finally learn why our once great nation is now in such a noticable decline and how the nation destroying economic and monetary policies of a small group of powerful men controlling our government have brought about that decline! Mr Coppes does a superb job of showing that both our dollar and all dollar denominated investments are dangerously close to collapsing and provides specific alternative investment suggestions for those seeking to preserve their money! Most importantly, the author clearly spells out how all that is happening in the world today - above all, an organized move towards a totalitarian world government - is clearly predicted in Bible prophecy! What really sets this financial book apart from others is the GOOD news the author offers! After presenting much sobering economic information and a way to protect ones assets, Mr. Coppes provides the best news of all! He tells us clearly how we can have inner peace and hope for the future in spite of what may happen financially and... how we can each be spiritually prepared for the future! This alone is worth the price of the book!

Great book with real insight. The author has done a very credible job of researching the subject and combining that wealth of knowledge with his own insights. I've bought copies for friends!

Book Description

America is under attack. The threat of bombs and bullets and every other form of terrorism comes mostly from Islamic extremists. But a powerful threat also stems from homegrown anti-Americanism from the left of the political and cultural spectrum. From "comedians" working for leading Democrat candidates who call the American President " . . . a piece of [expletive deleted]," to the candidates themselves who try to whip up feelings of victimization and anger in ethnic minorities, to universities that preach that America is the main villain on Earth and that 9/11 was richly deserved . . . a full-court left-wing propaganda press is on to drag America through the mud and sap America's resolve to fight and win the war on terrorism.

Why? Where does this anger at America by Americans come from? Certainly not from reality, since all available historical comparisons tell us that America is the most enlightened, open, and forgiving of nations and the one that offers the most opportunity to its citizens.

In Can America Survive? authors Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth examine this anti-American rage, providing plentiful and outrageous examples from campuses to foundations to Democratic candidate debates to liberal "fund-raisers" that openly tout hate as their message. The authors then attempt to plumb the psychological wellsprings that generate this anger: Is it infantile narcissism? Is it a desperately incomplete maturation process? Is it competition with patriarchal figures?

The authors attempt to create a psychological road map that explores what the psychological roots of this national self-loathing might be. This is a unique approach, attempting to explain political beliefs in terms of psychological background, and the authors believe that it's the only approach that works, since a realistic appraisal of America would not allow as much rage as we see in daily political discourse.

Finally, the authors offer a plan for how to fight back: They recommend educating your children in such a way as to develop pride in their country, suggest specific reading materials, offer ways to raise your voice to talk back to the major newspapers and TV networks, and even discuss how you can work fearlessly in university settings so that the left doesn't dominate political discourse.

Can America Survive? is a portrait of what is clearly wrong with the national mood, where that malady comes from, and how those who still believe in America can work in their communities and in the nation to preserve the republic.

1 out of 5 stars Problems.......2006-10-04

The problem with writing a rebuttal to the extreme left is that people begin to think that radical liberal views are characteristic of all liberal views. This book is a great disservice to the debate between liberals and conservatives. By allowing conservatives to feel content in their ideology by bashing the far left obliterates any rational inclination to consider valid points from the "other side" that everyone should think seriously about. America has descended into an extremely dangerous form of arguing - that of getting a point across and winning the argument, regardless of facts. I hope people will begin to draw conclusions from facts and not from rebuttals to the perversions of the far left.

4 out of 5 stars A Strong Stand for America.......2006-04-17

Firstly, this not an unabashed attempt by conservatives to bash liberals. Instead, as the authors verify (albeit a bit late into the text), this is a rebuttal of those in the extreme left who truly hate America. The line of argument tries to expose the extreme good being done by America and capitalism in the world. I think that it is necessary to affirm these goods and continually strive to better America further (as the authors proclaim). Envious hatred of America is never an edifying force. The act of dissent must always be one that builds up and never aims to tear down. It is against the crowd of those attempting to tear us down that the authors argue.

My disagreements with the authors are as follows:

They often begin their discussions with a variety of quotes that are taken from a variety of radicals, drawing their argument into an almost ad-hominem fallacy (as noted by another reviewer). However, this can not be fully maintained, for they do not use the character persons quoted to disprove their arguments. The real problem with this is that it could be interpreted as a narrow attempt at researching the views of America haters. Of course, I will argue that it is often difficult to discern a unified front in extreme liberalism because of its (often part and parcel) denial of objective truth and subsequent elevation of subjective understanding as the ultimate goal. (This is, of course, not meant to make humans into purely subjective computing machines. Instead, I mean to emphasize that a grounding of truth is necessitated because anything else would be a contradiction and yet this contradiction is often maintained by the elite for the sake of being "enlightened", but I digress.)

Furthermore, they are a bit too optimistic about capitalism's ability to lift up the world. I do think that the freedom in capitalism can do much good. However, we must never hope, like communism does, that we humans can work out perfection on our own. There is always the chance for humanity to fall. The authors do not directly assert this but lean that way at times. In all fairness, they hint at the advantage of capitalism: freedom is given to all. Next to the possibility for corruption, we must also acknowledge that we are also directed toward the Truth. Therefore, freedom must be maintained for all, a point truly made by the authors, although masked by an almost overzealous fideism in capitalism.

Finally, their review of "Phariseeism" is incomplete and also unreflecting upon the notion of wealth. I do not, however, read with a hermeneutic of suspicion. Based on the other ideas of these writers, I think that they have just chosen not to address this greatly and directly (although a brief mention is made with respect to gross extravagance).

In Conclusion,
All-in-all, however, this book gives a refreshing look at America. It serves as a reminder of what all we have done as Americans. From this we must take our forward thrust. This tradition must always remain a key motivating factor in progress. From the great things done in America, we must go forward in the hope of always helping our brethren in the world.

4 out of 5 stars Made me feel better about things.......2005-09-01

The authors put recent events in perspective with facts and insightful thinking. A great alternative to the mass media "spin".

1 out of 5 stars Just Another Liberal/Left Bashing Book.......2005-08-26

...but stated in an ever so "reasonable" way.

While reading this, I felt at times as though I was seated at an upper-crust dinner party, listening to a child of privilege tell me why: "things are really NOT bad at ALL--well, at least not for ME."

The child of privilege is Ben Stein (whose Dad worked for NIXON, by the way), and yes, I'm sure that for HIM things are NOT bad --at all.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Analysis on What's Wrong with the Radical Left.......2005-02-13

Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth's "Can America Survive" is a thoughtful, extensive look at what is wrong with the radical anti-American Left. Theirs is not an angry polemic against them, but instead, one replete with extensive quotes from those on the Left, pointing out their errors of omission and fact on issues ranging from the state of the U. S. economy, American imperialism, the nature of the conservative movement in the United States, to the moral blindness of the left. In thirteen succinct chapters they point out what exactly is wrong with the Left, issue by issue, and close with their prescription for America's survival. Throughout this book I was impressed by the authors' decency and keen sense of fair play, even when I disagreed strongly with them, most notably the chapter on Environmentalism with its emphasis on Global Warming (I believe their interpretation of the data - which is akin to Michael Crichton's in his latest novel - is scientifically incorrect, but nonetheless, I respect their position on this issue.). Indeed, they respect the opinions of distinguished liberal Americans such as comedian Al Franken and Hollywood producer Norman Lear, noting that they should be regarded as patriotic Americans even though their political views differ substantially from the authors. However, they are greatly concerned by the immense, deep-seated anger shown by the Left, "The Rage of the Left", wondering whether it may prove as divisive to the country as the Civil War. Both Ben Stein and Charles DeMuth are active in the Hollywood media industry: Stein, the son of the late Herb Stein, the distinguished economist who had worked in President Richard Nixon's administration, is a commentator and actor; DeMuth is a screenwriter. Anyone interested in the return of civil, well-reasoned, political discourse between the Left and the Right should regard this book as essential reading.

The Jewish population in the United States may shrink by two million people in the next half-century. This demographic likelihood--well known in Jewish circles and due almost entirely to intermarriage--creates a dilemma for group survival. A big part of the problem, writes Elliott Abrams, has been the secularization of Jewish life. Abrams uncovers data showing that Jews are among the least religious people in America. Many have made a tragic mistake in equating Jewish security with removing all forms of religious devotion from public life. And now, says Abrams, they must either rediscover the faith that can sustain them or risk vanishing into the great American melting pot. Provocative, but persuasive, this highly readable book deserves a wide audience.

    Book Description

"In an erudite and fascinating way, Elliott Abrams explores the immense but amazingly under-appreciated changes in Christian attitudes towards Jews as well as the failure of communication between orthodox and more secular Jews, arguing that American Jewry can only survive as a "religious" community. This provocative yet surprisingly readable book will foment discussion throughout the land."--Edward I. Koch, former mayor, New York City. (Judaism)

3 out of 5 stars Having a Jewish Identity crisis? Answer: GET RELIGION!.......2005-02-20

If anyone hadn't heard his name before, just a reminder, this author was the Assistant Secretary of State during the Reagan era. His book these reads like a report on Jewish life in illreverant America. While his argument on the state of Jewish idenity is well defended, (ie, like minimizing the religious aspect of the Jewish idenity and having major jewish organizations not supporting the religiously observant publically has lead to a loss of jewish poeple #s, etc.) it has some obvious flaws.

For example, he says that today's role of the Christian right and anti-semetism has been overexagerrated and feared by Jews. Great strides in the Christian-Jewish dialigoe has minimize hate teaching and proselytizing of jews by christian organizations. There is a great acceptance of Jews as senators, etc and other community leadership roles. And true, fundamentalists and evangetical organizations are no longer targeting jews per se and actually support Israel. But what is ignored is that they no longer have to directly. Why there are separate organizations that allow jews to do it to themselves. They are called Jews for Jesus and Messianic synagogues! There are over 100 messianic synagogues in Israel alone! Why no mention in the book? These outreach efforts are funded by the very evangetical organizations jews should not fear in allowing support to their religious political/educational agendas - in exchange of orthodox jewish ones.

Another example that struck me a bit off is the "abandonment" of the outreach to jews of mixed ethnic origins ("half" and "quarter" jews). Granted he does not say this directly, but he suggests money being more well spent in educating the remaining full jews from marrying outside the faith completely, regardless of a spousal conversion. To me this would be like jewish suicide, in denying the rest of the jewish population how they choose to idenify themselves as jews. If anything, jews of mixed ethnic or faith backgrounds need a special kind of sensitivity otherwise, they will deny their 'jewish self' all the more easily.

Lastly, there are divisions in the Jewish community on Israel due to their inability to create a peaceful solution with their neighbors, the Palestinians. Flag waving at the synagogues only help so much. The issue is not properly dealt with in this book which gives Abrams' book a false sense of authenticity.

Of course I recognize the problems Jews faced today. As a convert who has jewish relatives both though my step-father and now a jewish husband, I wonder how did I ever get into this mess! The jewish people have conflicts within their faith as well as outside of it, quite unique from say Irish or Italian american intermarriage to the protestants (though his comparisons to those groups are interesting). Identification with ourselves as a group must be more liberal that of the original torah. In this sense 'jewish survival' will depend more on the oral tradition of reinterpreting the original precepts of the jewish faith rather than the narrow view of jewish identification which he sees as the only way for Jews to exist as fully jews. And NO it does not mean that a Christmas tree needs to be put in a lobby of the Reform synagogue as he insinuates! Geez!

5 out of 5 stars Liberals ignore this book at their peril.......2001-04-03

Abrams' unflinching clarity, wisdom, brilliance, responsibility, and calm are equally evident in his writing and in his eyes (see book jacket). His book, rich with meticulously documented references and chapters organized with the grace of rivers flowing into the sea, held me in thrall; it was over too soon! (We love to read someone else's case for our existing opinions.)

After my own vain efforts to bridge the rift between Right and Left, observant and downright anti-religious, I had recently concluded that the anti-religious Left is a branch best left to die. Abrams addresses my conclusion. Liberals ignore this book at their peril. My burning questions: (1) From a theological perspective, wouldn't a non-anti-Jewish Christianity cease to be Christianity at all?, and (2) What is it -- a yeshiva education? -- that creates a person so clear-sighted, unrelentingly logical, and pleasantly articulate as the author?

    pk

    4 out of 5 stars Well-written addressing of a difficult issue.......2000-10-05

Despite 3000 years of history, Jews still argue over who is a Jew. Abrams addresses a lot of the issues surrounding this: Judaism as a religion vs. as a culture, intermarriage, et al. He also addresses how these ideas apply to American history, culture, and politics. To his credit, he states his biases up front, but he also does a good job backing up his assertions with surveys and anecdotes that, at least for me, resonated.

The book is well-written and an easy read, which is a compliment for a book with an academic tone. Abrams' analysis of the generational patterns of American Jews maintaining or losing their Jewish identity are quite right, and a must read for any Jew who wants Jewish grandchildren. Some of Abrams' arguments were less convincing.

Whatever your reaction to the book, the discussion will never end. (Insert your favorite Jewish mother or Jewish guilt joke here). This book represents a productive contribution to that discussion, and as such I recommend it to anyone who is concerned with personal or societal Jewish identity.

      Book Description

This book offers tips, pointers, and advice for women at all levels of the corporate world. Some how-to-succeed books for women offer helpful techniques and strategies to improve a career or fatten a paycheck. Nearly all are written by journalists, academics, and researchers, or by women who started their business careers at mid-level or higher because of previous experience. Yet few of these authors have experienced the humiliation, the apprehension, the dread, the fears, the naivete and discrimination that women in the trenches understand all too well. This book is based the personal experience of the author and the women she interviewed, making it a unique and practical guide to dispelling the fears that women have about asserting themselves in the workplace. Diane Smallen-Grob presents interviews with women executives who struggled for decent jobs and progressive careers in a wide variety of industries. The book focuses on what women did to succeed, where they are now, and--most importantly--what helped them rise among the ranks. The women share their experiences, insights, and stories. Common-sense pointers are offered for surviving the grueling boot camp that all women in business must endure. Women of every generation need to know that history can and does repeat itself, and that they must be forewarned, aware of the signs, and strong enough to make the best choices during the long climb to the top.

                  Book Description

To understand and constructively participate in the current debate on global warming and its consequences, it is essential to have a guide to the playing field. Dr. Melvin A. Benarde's book is this guide and more. It is, in fact, a Baedeker through the minefields of uncertainty which currently bedevil much of the discussion on global warming. He contends that predictions of global warming and its consequences generated by mathematical models are too often taken as holy writ. When, in fact, he states, they can only be seen as tentative. Anything else severely tortures the data. Without this rendering the current discussions border on babble. Bias, prejudice, and hidden agendas are everywhere and can be obstacles and pitfalls for the unprepared and unwary. By no means does he shrug off the idea of a possible warming trend. Dr. Benarde takes this fully into account and discusses in generous detail the alternatives reasonable people would pursue in the face of prodigious uncertainty. Consequently the book goes well beyond any of the others currently in print in describing the shortcomings of the warming thesis, why the stable climate of the past 10,000 years may, or may not, change, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of a warmer world. Clearly, this fully documented book is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the panoply of issues inherent in the possibility of climate change and contributes to much needed meaningful dialog.

From the supplier: Climatologist are questioning whether humans might be partially responsible for the sever weather conditions of El Nino events during 1997-98. They cite nine of the warmest years on record were recorded in the last decade, rising sea levels, glacial melting and abnormally high sea surface temperatures. El Nino and global warning tend to mimic each other in terms of climate disturbance.
