Customer Reviews:
Good to see whats around, Bad for developers.......2001-05-29
Not a bad book for Bioinformatics users who want to see what is around but this kind of information dates very rapidly.
Not a very good book for people interested in developing for bioinformatics (although it may prevent you from reinventing the wheel)
An overview of the software tools for Molecular biology.......2000-03-25
This book gives an overview of the powerful suite of software tools available for various computer applications of molecular biology. The initial chapters talk about many programs(comparisons, Database searching, sequence analysis, Gene Finding, pattern recognition, etc.) and web-based interfaces in addition to the utilities for sequences, databases etc., packed in Wisconsin package apart from short briefs of how to use these tools in a desktop environment. Also this book gives the details of sequence analysis tool called Omiga and its diverse functionalities.
Biological Sequence analysis software like MacVector and Lasergene gets enough attention in this book. Also sequence type-dependent and platform-independen tools like PepTool and GeneTool are also explained in detail.
Two important applications in molecular biology, gene identification and biological pattern detection have received a greater significance here. There is also a chapter about network computing for biologists.
This book lists out a set of free molecular biology software available in different web servers. A lot of relevant information about the journals online, research institutions and organisations and biological information repositories with their web site details and references are also accommodated. There are separate chapters for web-based resources for NCBI(National Center for Biotechnology Information)and EBI(European Bioinformatics Institute) besides a number of computing resources for geneticists.
In contrast to the notion of using mathematical and computational methods for solving different problems in modern biology, there is a chapter on computing with DNA, which talks about using chemical properties of DNA sequences to design a universally programmable molecular computer.
The editors have taken greater efforts in covering almost all vital tools and packages like Staden package, FASTA3 package, CLUSTAL programs, Primer3 on the WWW and Genotator in addition to phylogenetic Analysis using PHYLIP and low cost gel analysis.
On the other hand, the editors could have asked for a couple of more chapters on designing CORBA servers towards true interoperability of diverse biological databases, wrapping of legacy applications , integrating various biological software tools and desiging user-friendly graphical user interfaces using the new entrants like Java and CORBA.
Still this is a very good book for those with a thought of plunging into this ever-growing field of Bioinformatics.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Dealing With NPS Pollution.......2007-03-26
This is a great book for dealing with Non-Point Source (NPS) pollution. It covers a fairly comprehensive list of topics, while not going into great depth on most. It gives you enough information to get a good start on just about ANY analysis related to NPS pollution and a solid beginning to expand your research from if more in-depth analysis is required. In my opinion, this is a great reference for anyone working in water quality, and a "must-have" for working with NPS.

Description:
Pollution loads from land sources and their impact on the receiving waters can be predicted by using land-use and surface water quality models, respectively. In this paper details are given of the development of an integrated modelling system for managing water quality in coastal basins. The system includes a model linking the pollution input loads to land-use and a model for simulating surface flow and chemical and biological processes. The land-use model consists of two main components: a database and a model base. It uses a GIS system, namely ArcGIS, as the model platform. The database, built in the Geo-database format, includes six data sets containing information on social, economical, bathymetrical and hydrological aspects of a study area. The model base includes a series of transfer functions that link the pollution loads to key sources, including those from: industrial, domestic and agricultural inputs, and fish and animal farming. The water quality model is a numerical model which solves the governing equations representing the physical, chemical and biological processes in coastal waters. The modelling system was set up for Bohai Bay in China, with the land-use model being used to provide nutrient loadings from individual inputs and the water quality model used to predict the impact of these inputs on the receiving waters. Model simulations were also undertaken to predict the water quality conditions for various development and management scenarios.

Description:
The pathogens originating from diffuse pollution have raised much concern recently. In many countries, pathogen levels are monitored in surface water by measuring the pathogen indicator organism level, which indicates the concentration of pathogen associated microorganisms to determine contamination. Among indicator organisms, total coliform, fecal coliform, and Escherichia coli were selected for study, and their concentration as well as their flow rate were monitored at monitoring stations from October, 2001 to April, 2003. Monitoring stations include six sampling stations in the Geum River, two small watersheds used for forestry and agricultural land, one large wastewater treatment plant, one separate sewer overflow site, and one separate sewer overflow site in the Geum River basin. The coliform concentration of the combined sewer overflow was the highest, followed by the runoff from agricultural land use, the separate sewer overflow, and the runoff from forestry land use. The Pearson correlation coefficient for flow rate against total coliform concentration was 0.71 and was significant at 0.01 level, while the Pearson coefficient for other water quality constituents showed weak correlation (-0.36 to +0.37) against flow rate. Coliform concentration showed higher correlation against suspended solid concentration or flow rate during storm flow condition than during low flow condition. Two different relationship lines could explain the relationships between the flow rate and coliform loadings. Load duration curve technique was presented to assess the relative contributions of diffuse and point source pollution to the pathogen level at monitoring sites in the Geum River.
