4 out of 5 stars a necessary source for the study of 19th cebtury america.......2007-06-10

Ignore for the time being the fact that this is only the first volume of this work. Search for Vol. II will probably bring one to light certainly at a much higher price. Vol I is the most interesting of the two and offers great insight into the post war mind of Davis. If we want to understand the mind of this period we need to read this book along with the Buchanan expose of his presidency, Butler's Book by B. F. Butler who nominated Davis as Democratic presidential nominee, the Diary of Edmund Ruffin vol I, and many more, npne of which are neutral or even accurate in many ways but if we don't look at the reflections of the participants we are condemned to seeing history only through the eyes of later writers. Forget that McPherson introduces this book and that it is only volume one. It is a necessary and even fairly interesting read.

3 out of 5 stars Essential to Understanding the Causes of the Civil War.......2006-09-13

Whether we agree with Jefferson Davis or not, knowledge of his point of view is essential to understanding the causes of the Civil War. The forward by McPherson helps to give balance and explanation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent history & treatise .......2004-12-29

This is a work that any one should read concerninig the details of the life and death of the Confederate nation. The principled beliefs those who founded the other American nation are presented.

Jefferson Davis' work is thorough and detailed concerning the his belief in the constitutional basis that secession was legal and that the desire to peacefully seperate was the absolute goal of the southern states. Bear in mind the 4 states of the upper South (AR, NC, TN and VA) did not leave the Union until Lincoln called for forced cohersion of the other southern states.

His work is also quite detailed in the military aspects of the War Between the States and his personal eyewitness of events are well written and easy to read and grasp. A great read!

5 out of 5 stars Economical and easily available reprint of a classic.......2004-07-11

This is probably the most accessible reprint of Davis' book on the market today. It's well indexed and available at an economical price. My only complaint is that they got James McPherson, a confederacy-hating Marxist, to write the intro.

5 out of 5 stars Constitutional Justification for Secession.......2004-01-11

In this extremely well-written book, not only does President Jefferson Davis give critical insights on the events leading up to and including the War for Southern Independence (rare and very important in and of itself, given that he was the president of the Confederacy), but he also shows that he was a Constitutional scholar unparalleled by today's crop of so-called "experts".

President Davis was a reluctant secessionist. In fact, he had been working on trying to come to a compromise until his state seceded, and he returned home. This book does a great deal to show the character of the former president of the Confederacy, with his perceptions of events leading up to the war itself. For instance, he did not envision himself to be the president of the Confederacy, believing that position should instead go to Albert Johnston. Instead, he had thought he would receive a commission as general.

While there is plenty of information for virtually anyone interested in that period (there is detailed information about battles, insights by the president on figures living at the time, etc.), what truly makes the book such a fascinating read is the constitutional analysis (particularly regarding the secession question, but also going into the grievances by the Confederate states as well) found therein.

If there is a negative to this book, it is the poorly-written introduction by leftist and Lincoln apologist McPhearson. I don't know why he was chosen to write the forward, but it is best ignored.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is a magnum opus in Southern literature.

          Book Description

Historians often assert that Confederate nationalism had its origins in pre-Civil War sectional conflict with the North, reached its apex at the start of the war, and then dropped off quickly after the end of hostilities. Anne Sarah Rubin argues instead that white Southerners did not actually begin to formulate a national identity until it became evident that the Confederacy was destined to fight a lengthy war against the Union. She also demonstrates that an attachment to a symbolic or sentimental Confederacy existed independent of the political Confederacy and was therefore able to persist well after the collapse of the Confederate state. White Southerners redefined symbols and figures of the failed state as emotional touchstones and political rallying points in the struggle to retain local (and racial) control, even as former Confederates took the loyalty oath and applied for pardons in droves.

Exploring the creation, maintenance, and transformation of Confederate identity during the tumultuous years of the Civil War and Reconstruction, Rubin sheds new light on the ways in which Confederates felt connected to their national creation and provides a provocative example of what happens when a nation disintegrates and leaves its people behind to forge a new identity.

          3 out of 5 stars A Shattered Nation Indeed........2005-07-24

The cost in American life was greater than that for all other American wars combined, from colonial times through the wars against terrorism. Antietam was the bloodiest, and yet more fatalities on both sides occurred at Shiloh, Tennessee, and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. But it was the loss at Shiloh which caused the South to lose heart. At a Confederate Decoration Day celebration, on Jefferson Davis' birthday, one of the re-enactors told me that Nathan Bedford Forrest was his hero. I took a photo of the hero in action he had on his horse carrier. He was shocked when I told him that Amazon had removed my review about the Forrest book which was all made-up with all truth absent. He said to me, "You mean we still have censorship in the United States." A local Confederate, Dr. William Johnson Worsham, was honored for his service to our country; his war memoirs, "The Old 19th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, CSA" were published in 1902. A special commemoration and dedicated monument in the Old Gray Cemetery. On the Seal of the Confederacy are these words: "Deo Vindice", God is our Vindicator. I also took pictures of the different flags displayed on June 3.

Extraordinary leaders and incompetent tyrants served on both sides. Their power to fascinate, inspire, or exasperate remains undimmed. These men -- heros and fools -- toiled in a typhoon of broader forces. Grasping this dynamic relationship among the battlefield, the home front, and the diplomatic front is absolutely essential if you want to understand the American Civil War.

Shiloh is by far one of the best battlefields to visit to understand how the disastrous loss of ao many of our Confederate leaders was the undoing of our ability to revive and feel competent to win the war. On to Gettysburg, and that's the proverbial straw which broke the camel's back. Soon, our president was jailed as a common prisoner, and we in the South will never forgive or forget the indignities rained on our heads. With Forrest and Lee, we still could not rally around the stars and bars and lost because of low self-esteem and not due to Union superiority. Those Northerners still have the wrong belief that they are better than we; they move down here where the living is better (and not so expensive), then they go around trying to change things. I say, "Go back to where you were not happy." Just let us be!

It's very hard to find an accurate account of the people and conditions pertaining to the South's struggle for independence but Thomas Dixon does a marvelous job and also incorporates romance in a period where very little accurate history can be found. A very profound masterpiece.jf

The North had their orders: "Capture or kill Jefferson Davis," the rebel President of the Confederate South. Davis was captured, and upon his release from federal prison, crafted this intimate Civil War document that gives a powerful firsthand account of the South's defeat and the reasons behind its secession from the Union.

5 out of 5 stars Well-spring of comparative reproductive biology.......2007-07-29

I recently turned to these two volumes to seek some general information about bird reproduction in order to explore a few comparative ideas emerging from my own work centered around sperm evolution, reproductive strategies and sexual selection. I could not help being drawn in, and ended up reading all (or at least specific sections of nearly all) chapters. Jamieson assembled an impressive team of authors for these volumes, and the result is uniquely complexioned and integrative coverage of bird reproductive biology. Scholarship generally runs high, with both historical and cutting edge coverage of many subjects. Jamieson's own contribution of an avian spermatozoa chapter is superb...virtually exhaustive treatment of a rather vast and (for me) daunting literature. It will serve as the point of departure for all future work on the subject.

The books themselves are high quality productions and richly illustrated. Given the large number of electron micrographs, histological illustrations and colored clades, etc., the care that went into book production really pays off, and leaves me concluding that these books are well worth the price. I easily recommend them as a necessary part of every university library, and encourage any biologist interested in birds - or more generally in comparative reproductive biology - to keep them on their shelf.

                      Description:
We have combined published data on ecology and conservation status with phylogenetic information for all native British angiosperms. We use this information to explore patterns of threat with regard to taxonomy, ecology and life history. Threat status is significantly clumped among orders. However among genera, we identify only Limonium (sea lavenders) and Sorbus (whitebeams) as containing more threatened species than expected under a hypergeometric model, and we discuss the artefactual reasons for this finding. We present a table of Britain's 10 most threatened families according to this statistic. Threat status is also strongly clumped across habitat types using two published schemes. In an analysis excluding artificially influential genera, we identify the `arable and horticultural', `montane', `inland rock', and `supra-littoral sediment' habitats as containing more threatened species than would be expected under a hypergeometric model and discuss these results. Finally, we use phylogenetically independent contrasts to show that threat status is correlated with small size, low fecundity, and insect rather than wind pollination for the native British flora.
