Book Description

The aggressively revised new edition of this best-seller provides a clear, concise, and comprehensive introduction to the ideas and ideals that shake and shape our political world.

Written with the firm belief that ideology is the driving force of nation-states, history, and politics, this innovative text covers the range of contemporary political ideologies, from the standard categories of liberalism, conservatism, and socialism to newly emerging ideological alternatives. Political Ideologies and the Democratic Ideal provides an accessible overview of the origin and development of these ideologies, and illustrates how each interprets democracy and freedom.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction.......2005-10-15

The authors make a noble effort to minimize bias and examine the various ideologies objectively. As a few of the negative reviews make clear, not everyone is satisfied with this book's objectivity. I would like to respectfully disagree and ask the reviewers to re-examine their own biases.

5 out of 5 stars good.......2005-10-05

in good condition and received in a generally timely manner, but could've been done quicker

4 out of 5 stars Poltical Ideologies as a textbook.......2005-09-30

I am currently using this book in a Honors American Political Science course at Georgia State University. This book is very informative and does not add superfluous information like most textbooks do. However, there are some terms in the text that we as a class have found to be a bit contradictory; such as the term "individual conservative". This seems to be an oxymoron and my professor actually contacted Ball who just basically dodged the question...

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Excuse for P.I. Literature........2005-05-10

Just like it's companion book, this Political Ideologies textbook was blatantly biased. I find it mind-boggling that anyone could consider this a fair, ethical, and balanced treatment of the subjectmatter. Just like the other text, this book is filled with sweeping generalizations, liberal and left-wing indoctrination, and a severe lack of critical thought of ALL ideologies. I had to endure reading this book as well in a political science course, and it's a sure sign of the times. It's always those who claim to be the most "open-minded" who are in actuality, the least open-minded. I'm tired of the lip service and would actually appreciate it if authors like this would actually practice what they preach.
Instead of presenting all the material in a straight-forward manner, the authors take sides. This is extremely unethical writing. When presenting historical events and ideas it is practically crimminal to write a book like this with its extremely biased points-of-view. This book too, is filled with little breadth and little depth. Its not the side these authors are taking which irritates me, it's the fact that a side is taken at all. Extremely poor acedemcis here, and a complete lack of ethics here! Those who rate this book highly belie themselves as supportors of indocrination, instead of a fair treament of the materials represented. Not recommended at all.
As for the authors,..."I get it!" We know that you're hippies and that you spent your college days fighting against the War, and "the man", but when you start to write and act in the same manner as those you disagreed with, it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black!

2 out of 5 stars Good and Terrible.......2004-08-26

I give this book 2.5 stars. It is good as describing certain things objectively, but these are few and far between. The rest of the book is filled with radical left-wing shenanigans that do nothing but discredit those who disagree with them. They do not show the evils of socialism; they misrepresent conservatism (even though I am NOT a conservative by ANY means); they do not show the true colors of feminism and environmentalism, etc. etc. etc. If you are a hard-core liberal that specializes in not listening to other side, then this is the book for you. If you are a centrist, undecided, or in any way religious, conservative, or anything of the sort, you will despise this book for its egregious flaws. Concerning conservatism as a subject of conversation here, I am not saying they are ALL wrong. They do find some good errors in it, but they generalize and generalize, until everyone that disagrees with radical liberalism is in their own little niche with they classify as being wrong (usually conservatism). According to this book, I am a conservative, and I am wrong. But I am NOT a conservative, and even if I were, MOST of the things they say about conservatives are misrepresented. So, I give this book 2.5 stars, half of a full 5, because it has quite a bit of good content. But overall, it is a waste of space.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent essay collection.......2006-03-02

As a companion reader to Ideals and Ideologies, this reader is an excellent compostion of essays and writings that will challenge and encourage political thought. It is good for anyone wanting a broad overview of many different ideologies, rather than focusing on one in particular. It is historical so I recommend it for non-political readers as well. This work gives a good overview of the diverse ways in which men see government working and ruling in the affairs of men.

1 out of 5 stars Book of Liberal Indoctrination.......2005-05-10

This book is woefully over-rated. Having read it in a political science class, this book was full of oversimplifications, sweeping generalizations, liberal indoctrination, and a-historical information. The breadth was terrible, as was the depth. The authors left numerous critical points out of the book. The fact that they didn't include a chapter on Zionism is proof of this. They also made sweeping generalizations about 9/11 and events which led to the Oklahoma City bombing. These authors are either completely inept historians, or they're blatantly taking sides. Either way, there's no excuse for the poor writing here. It's not necessarily what's written in the book, but what's left out! History cannot be "politically correct". If these authors really practiced ethics in their writing they would have presented ALL the information in a straight-forward unbiased manner, allowing the reader to come to his or her own conclusion. Truly dissapointing. Not recommended at all.

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Reader.......2001-07-27

I reread this wonderful collection of seminal works of political philosophy often. I used it in my course on ideology. Students will find it challenging to work through, if you assign selections indescriminantly. That is why this reader is meant to complement an equally wonderful textbook written by the same authors. The scope here is awe-inspiring. We begin with Euripides and Pericles in the ancient Greece and end with the latest crypto ideological movements, such as feminism, animal rights activism, green politics, and the end of history thesis. I think that all selections are enlightening. This should be a must book for anyone specializing in political theory, intellectual history, or anyone who wants to understand or effectively employ ideological rhetoric. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars A solid and strong collection of original works.......1999-06-01

The editors have done a good job of including most of the major areas of western political thought of the last two thousand years. A bit skimpy on classical works, but well grounded in more contemporary times and the foundational thought of American and Western democratic ideals. The contents have been edited to ensure that the message is not lost in prose, and the average reader should be able to enjoy the readings, also getting a clear sense of what the original author intended to say. Aimed at the Higher Education market it is a little pricey, but a buy for the shelf of anyone interested in this subjecr area.

    Book Description

What is Americanism? The contributors to this volume recognize Americanism in all its complexity--as an ideology, an articulation of the nation's rightful place in the world, a set of traditions, a political language, and a cultural style imbued with political meaning. In response to the pervasive vision of Americanism as a battle cry or a smug assumption, this collection of essays stirs up new questions and debates that challenge us to rethink the model currently being exported, too often by force, to the rest of the world.

Crafted by a cast of both rising and renowned intellectuals from three continents, the twelve essays in this volume are divided into two sections. The first group of essays addresses the understanding of Americanism within the United States over the past two centuries, from the early republic to the war in Iraq. The second section provides perspectives from around the world in an effort to make sense of how the national creed and its critics have shaped diplomacy, war, and global culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Approaching a controversial ideology as both scholars and citizens, many of the essayists call for a revival of the ideals of Americanism in a new progressive politics that can bring together an increasingly polarized and fragmented citizenry.

What is liberalism in the post-9/11 world? What do the ideals of civilization and civility mean during the Bush administration's campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq? Is liberalism still important?

Cornell examines the most important scholars of today and their approach to these questions. She contrasts Amartya Sen's capabilities approach with that of Martha Nussbaum, and examines Adorno's salvaging the idea of progress. She critiques Richard Falk's justification of the bombing of Afghanistan, which has now led to the slippery slope that Falk feared and could not defend against. Cornell also examines the ideal of civility as defined by Etienne Balibar and Thomas Nagel, with important implications for the world community.

It examines if the UN can help to build the foundations of democracy and whether, as an "external" actor, it can have a substantive positive impact upon the development of democratic governance inside societies. It explores how the normative ideals of democracy interact with the realities of power in the international arena and in the societies in which the UN works, provideing a timely analysis of the prospects and limitations of the UN's work in this area, and of the broader field of democracy promotion.

            Book Description

When news of the O. J. Simpson verdict swept across the United States, a nation stood divided as blacks and whites reacted differently to the decision. Seldom has the racial division that permeates our society come so clearly and prominently into view.

Divided by Color supplies the reasons for this division, asserting that racial resentment continues to exist. Despite a parade of recent books optimistically touting the demise of racial hostility in the United States, the authors marshal a wealth of the most current and comprehensive evidence available to prove their case. Kinder and Sanders reveal that racial resentment remains the most powerful determinant of white opinion on such racially charged issues as welfare, affirmative action, school desegregation, and the plight of the inner city.

But more than a comprehensive description of American views on race, Divided by Color seeks to explain just why black and white Americans believe what they do. Kinder and Sanders analyze the critical factors that shape people's opinion on race-related issues, uncovering the relative importance of self-interest, group identity, ideological principles, as well as racial animosity. Finally, the authors explore how the racial divide has insinuated itself into the presidential election process and examine the role of political elites in framing racial issues for ordinary citizens.

The most accurate and thorough analysis of American attitudes toward race and racial policies undertaken in decades, Divided by Color is destined to become a landmark work on race in America.

              Book Description

Democracy is under threat from a variety of forces originating in the transnational capitalist economy. Structural economic pressures force states to act in certain ways, regardless of what their populations want or think. In Democracy in Capitalist Times, John S. Dryzek discusses the challenges transnational capitalism presents for democracy and the most promising places where democracy can find new and growing support. Dryzek links contemporary political theory and comparative politics to explore the contradictions between capitalism and democracy. While ideological forces limit the range of political debate, government and market together promote aggressive individualism, under which people compete as consumers and profit maximizers rather than associate as citizens. Dryzek outlines these forces, considers how democracy might be defended against them, and explores the prospects for deepening democracy in the face of these threats. He argues that while state democracy has significantly diminished, democracy in different places, notably civil society, social movements, workplaces, and transnational politics, is on the rise, and it is in these places that democrats should concentrate their efforts. Dryzek further explains that the health of democratic politics in these alternative locations crucially depends on how states organize patterns of interest representation, among which social democratic corporatism proves to be most conducive to democracy.

Dryzek studies how supposedly the demise of communism has not ended the threat to democracy. He suggests that raw market capitalism can act to hinder people acting as citizens of a country, and instead by merely economic entities. The text sees unfettered capitalism as something undesirable.

Instead, it suggests that various social movements or organisations, can act to increase the democratic participation of people, and hence to moderate capitalism. There is certainly merit in this, for it helps people get motivated and reinforces their ties to various groups within a society.

But the book never seems to seriously contemplate the idea that capitalism might aid a democracy, by maximising the economic freedoms of its participants.
