This forceful, sarcastic, and often hilarious book offers tips on arguing with liberals, which include the following: don't be defensive, always outrage the enemy, and never apologize to, compliment, or show graciousness to a Democrat. Welcome to the world according to Ann Coulter. Ever combative, Coulter is unafraid to court controversy or confront her detractors head-on, whether they are mainstream journalists and talk-show hosts who have misquoted her without apology or "weak and frightened conservatives" craving liberal approval. Though the writing is often over-the-top, the book if full of one-liners that will delight conservatives, such as "the best way to convert liberals is to have them move out of their parents' home, get a job, and start paying taxes." But there is more here than just insults and countless jabs at Bill Clinton, and even her most devoted readers will find much new material in the book. Largely a collection of her syndicated columns from the past decade, How to Talk to a Liberal also includes columns that were never released or were rejected by editors--in Coulter's words, "what you could have read if you lived in a free country." --Shawn Carkonen

Book Description

Welcome to the world of Ann Coulter. With her monumental bestsellers Treason, Slander, and High Crimes and Misdemeanors, Coulter has become the most recognized and talked-about conservative intellectual in years—and certainly the most controversial. Now, in How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must), which is sure to ignite impassioned debate, she offers her most comprehensive analysis of the American political scene to date. With incisive reasoning, refreshing candor, and razor-sharp wit, she reveals just why liberals have got it so wrong.

In this powerful and entertaining book, which draws on her weekly columns, Coulter ranges far and wide. No subject is off-limits, and no comment is left unsaid. After all, she writes, “Nothing too extreme can be said about liberals because it’s all true.” How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must) offers Coulter’s unvarnished take on:

•The essence of being a liberal: “The absolute conviction that there is one set of rules for you, and another, completely different set of rules for everyone else.”

•John Kerry: “A reporter asked Kerry, ‘Are you for or against gay marriage?’ As usual, his answer was, ‘Yes.’ ”

•Her 9/11 comments: “I am often asked if I still think we should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity. The answer is: Now more than ever!”

•The state of the Democratic Party: “Teddy Kennedy crawls out of Boston Harbor with a quart of Scotch in one pocket and a pair of pantyhose in the other, and Democrats hail him as their party’s spiritual leader.”

•Her philosophy for arguing with liberals: “Tough love, except I don’t love them. My ‘tough love’ approach is much like the Democrats’ ‘middle-class tax cuts’—everything but the last word.”

•The “Treason Lobby”: “Want to make liberals angry? Defend the United States.”

In this full-on Coulterpalooza, you’ll find the real, uncensored Ann Coulter. A special concluding chapter even includes the pieces that squeamish editors refused to publish—“what you could have read if you lived in a free country,” says Coulter. How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must) is a stunning reminder of why Ann Coulter’s commentary has achieved must-read status.

1 out of 5 stars Anyone can write a book these days..........2007-10-09

It doesn't matter if you ignore the facts and instead just rant and rave. Hey, if you please the right people you're going to make lots of money! I think I'm going to write my own book called, "How to talk to dumb blonds, if you must."

5 out of 5 stars Once again....Right on!.......2007-10-02

This is absolutely one of Ann's greatest books. She says the things I think quietly to myself. Maybe SHE should be the first woman President.

5 out of 5 stars Her best book.......2007-10-01

This is, in my opinion, Ann Coulter's strongest book. The book is a collection of the essays that she writes weekly and posts on her website and on some conservative sites. Ann Coulter is a good writer and a strong thinker; she has the ability to construct very strong arguments. However, I have never been impressed with her ability to turn her arguments into books. Treason, Godless, etc all have very interesting ideas in them but her argument gets away from her at time.

How to Talk to a Liberal though is different. Coulter's ability to form strong arguments really shines in the short essay format and the essays collected in this book are a real treat to read. I don't agree with everything that Coulter writes but what she has written in this book is bound to make the reader take another look at some of the most serious political issues of our time.

1 out of 5 stars Coulter: The High Priestess of Lunacy.......2007-09-27

Ann Coulter...what can we say about her? I'll take her very own approach to reviewing this book. This book is evil, the work of Satan. Republicans hate America, hate reason and knowledge, hate anything but brainwash, and wallow in primitive myths. There. Brilliant review, right Annie? Annie are you ok, are you ok, Annie?
P.S. At the time of this writing, there are 227 available used copies, starting at less than $1.50! That's funny.

5 out of 5 stars The best political book I've ever read!!!!!.......2007-09-01

Anne Coulter has got to be the greatest conservative mind of our era! Her views and opinions in this book are undeniable and so true.

CAUTION: You’re about to enter the world of Ann Coulter

How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must), the instant New York Times bestseller, shows why Ann Coulter has become the most recognized—and controversial—conservative intellectual in years. Coulter ranges far and wide in this powerful and entertaining book, which draws on her weekly columns. No subject is off-limits, no comment left unsaid. She even includes a special chapter featuring the pieces that squeamish editors refused to publish—“what you could have read if you lived in a free country.”

In How to Talk to a Liberal (If You Must)—which features a brand-new chapter special to the paperback edition—Coulter offers her unvarnished take on:

• The essence of being a liberal: “The absolute conviction that there is one set of rules for you, and another, completely different set of rules for everyone else.”

• Her 9/11 comments: “I am often asked if I still think we should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity. The answer is: Now more than ever!”

• The state of the Democratic Party: “Teddy Kennedy crawls out of Boston Harbor with a quart of Scotch in one pocket and a pair of pantyhose in the other, and Democrats hail him as their party’s spiritual leader.”

• The “Treason Lobby”: “Want to make liberals angry? Defend the United States.”

• How far the Left has sunk: “Liberals have been completely intellectually vanquished. Actually, they lost the war of ideas long ago. It’s just that now their defeat is so obvious, even they’ve noticed.”

• And much more

5 out of 5 stars When saying "here Fido---good dog" is not an option.......2007-09-29

OK, let's be clear on this: Coulter's latest little round of lib-bait-&-smash isn't an instruction manual, or even a primer on what a good American conservative can use as snappy comebacks & snarky rejoinders to liberal dunderheadedness, not at all.

It's like that Alien diplomacy primer back in the Golden Age (the 1950's): It's a cookbook!

A cookbook for serving up the peculiarly suicidal phylae known as the Genus Apologeticus Liberalis Americanus: the whiney, uber-politically correct American left-winger. Well done, baby.

And it's admirably civil, compared to my own little book dictating personal conversations with Liberals. How to talk to a Liberal? Easy:

*"I'd like fries with that."
*"Medium starch on the pants."
*"I'd like two tickets for the 8:30 show."
*"Put some real elbow grease into it!"
*"No, no, you're doing it all wrong---you need to use more tongue on the sole---it's not shiny enough!"

And so forth. By contrast, Coulter's wicked little polemic cooks, bastes, boils, friccasees, and sautees the bane of American political discourse: the community-college educated leftist/statist, a creature in vast supply today (free range, no less!) running wild chiefly in newsrooms, Hollywood watering holes, faculty lounges, and in general on the blasted heath of the brain-dead, intellectually starved steppe-lands of what remains of today's American academy.

Coulter's point is not anti-intellectual or ignorantly dismissive: "How to Talk to a Liberal" takes it as a given that the Liberal doesn't want real debate. He doesn't want to talk to you: he wants Power.

Make no mistake about it: the American Leftist, or, as he calls himself (to better hide his goatish hooves and curling horns) the "Liberal", is a tireless enemy of freedom. He has had a major hand in creating the lifeless, lustreless, boil-covered society through whose grey streets the majority of our quivering population is now forced to scuttle.

Think of what we've lost in ten years: having a cigar around the office to celebrate landing the Gorfingle account, having a nice cigar over a steak dinner at the Bull & the Bear, smoking ciggies in New York & El Lay bars, driving down the road with a Fuzzy Navel in one hand and your cellphone in the other, not worrying about the Gestapo pulling you over for not wearing a seatbelt, big dorsal finned roaring American cars built from Detroit steel that belch out black smoke and make grass die---God, man, you could go on forever.

The Left has. The New American Liberal Man, the weenie-less equivalent of the New Soviet Man, has no real spine. Look at most snivelling college leftists: they'd gladly hold their girlfriend's rapist's assault gear if they thought it would save 'em a beating. But for all that, the American Leftist has been pretty macho when it comes to 1)castrating Free Speech through endless PC speech codes; 2) gelding the Free Market through tireless promotion of big government and high taxes; and 3) gutting America's strength & standing in the World.

The Liberal, then---this counterfeit free-thinker!---is a cancer. He is a threat. He must not be debated. He must not have points ceded his way. He has no points to cede.

Dinesh D'Souza has rightly identified American leftist/liberlism as an Enemy at Home bent on the destruction of truly liberal western values: an enemy that must be destroyed, annihilated, his house burnt and the smoking ruins urinated on, and he must pass off this mortal coil to the weeping and wailing of his women (or same sex partners, considering the sort of thing we're talking about here). Figuratively speaking, of course.

Ann Coulter does that. She does it well. She's a kind of right-wing common sense Boadicea, struggling against the faceless, tireless, brainless tirades of a fumbling, dog stupid Liberal establishment. And I think she enjoys herself, which is why her books, while not life-changing, are still spiky loads of fun to read.

That's why her detractors loathe books like this: Ann Coulter makes the leftists dizzy with rage. The reason they rage!rage! is not because her opinions are subversive, but because she is a clever, brutally talented little artillery master of American scorn. She uses words like a spitting cobra uses venom.

Those who claim Coulter just adds to the incivility of American debate wilfully ignore the larger issue: American politics is necessarily uncivil because they made it that way. When you start using Politics as a truncheon, don't whine when someone shows up with a tac-nuke.

5 out of 5 stars Ann at Her Best!!!!!.......2007-09-25

Look, if you hate the right wing, don't waste your time. Why? Because this book is not geared to convert you to conservatism, introduce you to conservatism gently, or even paint a picture of conservatism you might have overlooked being a leftist. Trust me. As for me, I love the woman, saw her speak, and would get into a fist fight over her defense (done it). Do I agree with everything she says, no. But this is my favorite of all her books, and a must have for any Right Wing American. Why? Buy the book- the information, her logic, her ideas, her theories, and her sarcasm.... unparalleled and funny as hell. True this book was more relevant during the 2004 election; it is still timeless in nature. The civil rights movement had its Malcolm X, the Republican Party has its Ann Couler. Truly a living legend, this is her teachings. Enjoy fellow elephants!

5 out of 5 stars The World According to Ann.......2007-09-15

Ann Coulter is a syndicated columnist. In this book she presents her writings about American liberalism. Her commentary covers the war on terrorism, the 2004 presidential election, the state of the Democratic Party, Max Cleland, Bill Clinton, and Freedom of speech is just some of her topics. I finished this in one day. Ms. Coulter is a brilliant writer that is intelligent, witty, and very sarcastic. Combine that with her logical and candid manner and you can see why this very articulate woman is on the bestseller list. A very easy read. This book is entertaining and thought-provoking. There is no question that it is biased, but what book isn't.

1 out of 5 stars No words.......2007-07-11

There is only one word to discribe her and this book, but I am too polite to say it. She must be living in Neverland if she thinks that somebody could get away with not talking to a liberal. With people leaving the GOP in droves and Bush having a less than 30 persent aproval rating, more people are realizing that the times are changing, women have been able to vote for 100 years almost, and killing people and converting people to Christianity went out with the Crusades

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love that woman.......2007-06-25

As always, Ann is dead on. EXCELLENT read. This should be a school textbook!

I would hate to be on the wrong side of this articulate lady who strips liberals down to their figurative shorts by exposing their lies in a series of newspaper columns published between 2000 and 2003 and read by the author herself. Party-line liberals, be careful what you say (especially in print) because she will not just expose you but paint you neon red! Conservative and powerful!

4 out of 5 stars Important safety aid.......2006-06-08

I must admit, Ann sometimes makes sense about Islam and Immigration. The rest, you know, is unbelievably vicious lies.

So why then am I giving it four stars?

Well, you know, sometimes you are driving on the freeway, and you start to get really sleepy, you just can't stay awake? It's very dangerous. Just pop in this CD. ONE MINUTE! You will not. be. sleepy. But please, DO NOT OVERDOSE! A little too much, you could be in a bad road rage incident.

5 out of 5 stars Are You Liberal? Conservative? or Confused? (An "Uncle Eric".......2004-10-28

This short book has really opened my eyes to what I thought I knew. I have a greater perspectives on the differences of the various political views, whether Republican, Libertarian, Democrat, Socialist etc.

This is a very quick read in an easy to understand format. I have passed this book on to several people who have enjoyed it as well.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, thought provoking, not infalible...but fun.......2002-06-24

I agree with Mr. Maybury's assessment of the situation we find ourselves in today in America. I particularly enjoyed finding that he agreed with both Patrick Henry and James Madison and that they both gave an accurate prediction about the upcoming problems, downfalls and failings of an ever-mutating Federalist mentality that is ripping the heart out of our founding principles. It killed the true goal of our founders, which was to allow states and communities to remain diverse, different and unique and economically and socially controlled by the people who lived in them. If you did not agree socially or politically with one community and/or state you could move to another and live comfortably knowing you would be around others with similar beliefs, opinions and characteristic.

In other words they did not want us to become exact mental, emotional and social clones or mere automatons of a Federal Government "1984" mentality run amuck. People like Earl Warren and Warren Burger succeeded in putting us on that destructive hedonistic and anti-American coarse by hijacking the judiciary.

Local control as Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine advocated, would undeniably put the decision making process in the hands of the voters and real-democracy at the lowest levels, they did not believe in Stare Decisis which kills a true ever-changing democracy. They wanted the "one person one vote" majority-rule concept to flourish on a local level, instead of having a federal government, which steals that basic right, concept and liberty at every opportunity by manipulating entities at every level and corrupting the courts.

Certainly government at the federal level was and still is necessary for some very basic issues, like those identified in the Preamble to the Constitution for instance, but never at the level it is at today.

It all comes back to that corrupting influence of power. I found it strange that he did not speak of term-limits as a counterbalancing protection for his Juris Naturalis ideology, the only real protection to saved us from the decline in founding principles as society grew, matured, evolved and became corrupted. A corruption that transformed the philosophy of the people, by the people, and for the people; to one of me, we, our party and an "our cause only mentality."

As much as I enjoyed his wit, humor, intelligent discourse and insight, which will undoubtedly cause me to read the rest of his books, which I highly recommend as a Middle School introduction to all his subjects, I could not possibly agree with all his teachings, opinions and/or assertions. Perhaps it is just that in his attempt to cover so many bases he seemed to have numerous contradictory comments that makes one stop and say wait a minute that is just not true.

For instance he asked, "has anyone ever suggested to you that government may not be necessary?" That is a foolish question today, of coarse it is.

He also asserts for instance that the right wants to stamp out sin and the left wants to stamp out inequality of wealth. These are interesting assertions but facades and falsehoods and assumptions that have no real basis. Those comments could be just as easily phrased like this, "the right wants to make people merit conscious and responsible for their actions by teaching morality and the left wants to rob from those who work to give to those who don't. Both of these statements would be equally as true, but give a completely different impression to the reader.

How can the left be said to believe in stamping out the inequality of wealth when so many of them, and I do mean, many of them, are filthy rich and getting richer every day at the expense of the poor and middle class in America. They are in fact the arrogant Aristocracy of the western civilization so hated by the Middle East. It is not our government or our true American values and culture that the Middle Easterners hate so much, but the liberal rich people and their hedonistic tendencies, policies and activities that irk them so much. When someone asks why Islam hates America it is simply because of liberal ideologies, policies and programs. It is as simple as that.

When I see Ted Turner, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Dianne Feinstein, Ted Kennedy, Steven Speilberg, Hugh Hefner and several thousand other left-wing liberal icons give away their millions and/or billions and live on what I make, I will change my opinion of the left. But for today I disagree with Mr. Maybury's assertion about the goal of liberals, wanting to fix any inequalities, they create them.

They want power and the ability to oppress others at any cost and sit in their Eiffel towers dictating socialistic and hedonistic principle and rules of conduct on the rest of us peons. In others words I believe his definition of "Fascist" more aptly fits the modern day liberal than the word "liberal" does, and I would put fascist at the far left end of his scale rather than the right end, but hey it is his book.

There are many other inconsistencies of thought and assertion in his writings, but nothing significant enough to recommend skipping this truly enjoyable book. I have ordered and will most certainly read all the others as well, but with a critical eye. I truly enjoyed his work, with only minimal reservations, because I do read everything with the critical eye he instructs his readers to use.

As a series of books for beginners in politics, social issues and economic studies I can stand by the four star rating and highly recommend his thought provoking comments to those from all political persuasions. After reading this book I would have to classify myself as a Nationalistic Juris Naturalis of the Original "Classical Liberal" Judeo-Christian Founding Fathers Persuasion. Wow, what a mouthfull. Where are you in the mix?

This is a wonderful book which helps you clearly define your political stance, i recommend these books for young students who need to learn about the political parties and adults who think they know all there is all to know about political parties. I myself am a juris naturalist, if you'd like to know what that is then check out this book, i'm amazed at how much knowlege i gained!

p.s i also recommend evaluating books: what would thomas jefferson think about this, and whatever happened to penny candy?

4 out of 5 stars Very good, with some flaws.......1999-04-17

Maybury clearly understands the biggest threat in history has always been the state, which is based on violence and death. This makes him a classical liberal (which has nothing to do with the ignorant and dangerous liberals of today), or, in modern terms, a libertarian. However, he uses the cliched continuum of Nazis and fascists at the far right and communists and socialists at the far left. Someone like Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn argues they are all far left. I'm not sure it matters; all of them are idolators who worship the state. But it does make it confusing, since this book is aimed at the young. Still, it is an excellent introduction to political science, law and economics, and I would recommend it to anyone. I do wish that in addition to his two laws, "Do all you have agreed to do" and "Do not encroach on other persons or their property" (which are nothing more than the Biblical injunctions against lying and theft) he had included the one about coveting (envy), which is the little-understand cause of centuries of untold horror.

Book Description

Yes, Virginia, there is a war on Christmas. ItÂ's the secularization of AmericaÂ's favorite holiday and the ever-stronger push toward a neutered “holiday” season so that non-Christians wonÂ't be even the slightest bit offended.

Traditionalists get upset when theyÂ're told—more and more these days—that celebrating Christmas in any public way is a violation of church and state separation. That is certainly not what the founders intended when they wrote, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

John Gibson, a popular anchor for the Fox News Channel, has been digging up evidence about the liberal activists, lawyers, politicians, educators, and media people who are leading the war on Christmas. And he reveals that the situation is worse than you can imagine. For instance:

• In Illinois, state government workers were forbidden from saying the words “Merry Christmas” while at work
• In Rhode Island, local officials banned Christians from participating in a public project to decorate the lawn of City Hall
• A New Jersey school banned even instrumental versions of traditional Christmas carols
• Arizona school officials ruled it unconstitutional for a student to make any reference to the religious history of Christmas in a class project

Millions of Americans are starting to fight back against the secularist forces and against local officials who would rather surrender than be seen as politically incorrect. Gibson shows readers how they can help save Christmas from being twisted beyond recognition, with even the slightest reference to Jesus completely disappearing.

The annual debate will be hotter than ever in 2005, and this book will be perfect for everyone whoÂ's pro-Christmas.

The War on Christmas is real and the major media refuses to report on it. I am tired of being "Happy Holidayed" to death in a country where at least 90% of people are Christians and virtually everyone celebrates at least the secular side of Christmas. The tool of "political correctness" is nothing more than a gimmick to silence the majority. Why should we have to celebrate our most beloved holiday behind closed doors and be afraid to call it and its trappings by name???? A democracy means rule of the majority! Do a google search for "The Jewish Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and read a very interesting article by a Jewish man which is written without anger, hatred or bitterness. May I suggest that Americans who are angered by the War on Christmas boycott all stores , web sites , and products which refuse to mention the holiday by name. They obviously don't want our business. Could anybody tell me what is offensive about "Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men"?

1 out of 5 stars Good grief, Charlie Brown!.......2007-07-04

Christmas is the Western world's juggernaut of a holiday. Many, if not most, retail businesses are highly dependent on Christmas season purchases in order to show annual profits. Not only is Christmas huge commercially, it is the religious holiday that is observed by more people than any other, worldwide. For John Gibson to claim that a handful of isolated local ill-conceived rulings are somehow placing this holiday in jeopardy is just too stupid for words.

It's obvious that some people are going through their lives just itching for something to be angry about or someone to be the focus of their anger. Relax, everyone. Christmas will continue to arrive on schedule and Santa will still be checking his list to see who's been using their heads for something besides a hatrack.

Be good, boys and girls! Enjoy Christmas. Don't use it as another excuse to seethe. The merchants of hatred like John Gibson are just making money from your anger and, in the process, turning Americans against one another. For them to use the holiday season as a vehicle for their agenda is despicable. They should be ashamed.

1 out of 5 stars Slapstick.......2007-03-08

I call this screed that as I almost gave it a star or two for its comic value. But, no, I can't do that.

All right, I got this on the remainder shelf at the University of Maryland bookstore--sorry Amazon. Frankly, I didn't know the book existed until I saw it there. Anyone with a few brain cells knows that the "war on Christmas" is a completely contrived fantasy. Those who believe in it have chosen items that have been facts for years--that some are sending "holiday" cards instead of Christmas cards, for example.

Boys and girls, we're a multi-religious/cultural society. When I was still a graduate theology student in a Catholic institution, I sent a "Happy Hannuakah" card to Jewish friends. I still send "Blessed Ramadan" cards to Muslim neighbors! And, to the likes of John Gibson, bill o'lielly, and assorted other alleged rightwing harlots, that means I'm opposing Christianity.

You know, I never liked Gibson. But I thought he had a microgram of integrity. Now I realize how bad the US media have become because we allow a second rate hooker like him--the others I mentioned and others still--remain those who allegedly inform us, or are in a position to do so.

Why do I call them "alleged conservatives"? Because I don't believe that they--or even Ann Coultergeist and her ilk--believe in anything. They're completely cynical yet know their audience off of which they make a bundle. We all know their audiences, the ones Nixon used to call "the silent majority." They're people desperately in need of someone to tell 'em what to think. To boot, they need to consider themselves as victimized. It's sad, really, and real life goes on in spite of them and John Gibson.

1 out of 5 stars How the Grinch Stole Oppression.......2007-01-09

This inflammatory and hyperbolic book is tailor-made for Far Right self-victimizers who need to justify their increasingly bizarre ideology of confrontation. Here John Gibson has forever ruined his standing as a journalist. Real investigative journalists tackle complicated stories, rather than spoon-feed invective and conjecture to the narrow-minded, or concoct vast conspiracy theories out of a few specific examples. The current ideological elite has enjoyed a decade of uncontested social, economic, and political power, and Gibson's claims here are perfect illustrations of how the Far Right can't even comprehend its own self-righteousness. While millions of their fellow Americans continue to face inequality and discrimination, the poor souls of the elite can't rest on their fortunate laurels, and want us to believe they're the ones who are really oppressed. That's because they saw a sign saying "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas." This is the same political philosophy that uses the label "freedom" for overseas military operations that lead to the deaths of thousand of American soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians, then turn around and use "war" for the actions of a few levelheaded non-zealots who wish to preserve our Constitutional separation of church and state.

Gibson's "analysis" is nothing but a list of incidents in just seven different cities in which valiant Christian lawyers fought against the forces of evil that disputed a few Christmas observations. Of course, Gibson doesn't allow such a meager pattern to hold back a hyperbolic liberal conspiracy theory of the type his fellow self-victimizers will adore. You guessed it - a few activist "liberals" in a few towns constitute a vast conspiracy to introduce a paltry amount of discomfort into the privileged lives of tens of millions of comfortable elitists. Gibson's other running implication, about how the separation of church and state should apply to everyone else's religion except for the particular faith practiced by the current power regime, is so un-American and un-Democratic that even Conservatives should be aghast. If you're outside of the narrow Far Right political philosophy, this book is actually a useful illustration of how political and economic power leads to an illusory persecution complex. Not unlike many dictatorial regimes in history. If you're in that elite, or pretend you are even though that regime cares little for you, and you love to attract pity because you think you're forever victimized by non-existent conspiracies, then Happy Holidays! I teach high school world history and I picked up a copy of this great little book in our library's discard pile. The first few chapters offer an excellent background to these two opposing political viewpoints. Kronenwetter starts with the Enlightenment and explores how those ideas shaped the American and French Revolutions. Unfortunately, this book was published in 1984 so it does not include more recent information. Mr. Kronenwetter, if you read this, PLEASE update this book and publish a newer addition! Otherwise, this is a great resource for teachers and students. I'm definitely going to share Kronenwetter's information with my class.

Book Description

Declaring that there hasn't been a "real" Democrat in the White House since Lyndon Johnson, Ted Rall decries the hijacking of the government by right-wingers and the seeming powerlessness of the left to stop them. Wake Up, America! You're Liberal! features his trademark no-holds-barred invective and 30 thought-provoking illustrations.

Rall, seeing the left in disarray, tells liberal Americans how to organize a vibrant, relevant alternative to rightist rule and make life better for vast numbers of people in the process. In fact, he says, in order to enjoy the mainstream majority status they deserve, liberals must strive to create a viable American left centered around an effective Democratic party.

2 out of 5 stars A Bad Man.......2006-08-10

I read the book because I had heard good things about it. I was disgusted by what I saw. I've always been a moderate, so this is not the ramblings of some right wing nut who just hates liberals. Ted Rall hates America with an almost satanic passion. After reading the book, I went online and searched for Ted Rall's cartoons. These cartoons are even worse than the book. He advocates the deaths of our soldiers and makes one cartoon actually claimed that ALL soldiers are rapists and sadists. Ted Rall is a sick and twisted human being. Do not send any of your money to this sadistic and anti-american nut.

3 out of 5 stars I basically agree, but the book does have flaws.......2006-01-21

I agree, generally, with the book's basic position, which is that those of us who are not on the far right side of the political spectrum need to stand up to the onslaught from the right. I also appreciate Ted Rall's snarky sense of humor. I very much appreciate the fact that he's done his homework and that he presents clear, and for the most part, accurate information. By and large, I think that he makes his case.

I also really appreciate the tone of the book. Rall wants to fight back against bullies. I do too. At a time in our country's history when we can observe more and more of our sacred civil liberties being chipped away from within, at a time when we are forced to endure the sanctimonious speech of hypocrites feigning morality, there are many targets. Essentially what Rall advocates is standing up to political bullies, hitting them back harder than they hit, and then watching them scamper away. Whether or not this will work as a political strategy is somewhat uncertain; but there is a cathartic value to just contemplating the idea.

If the book has a basic flaw it is this; in framing the book's arguments as essentially, left vs. right, it contributes to an environment of polarization. Perhaps we need to transcend this, ultimately. The problem with such positioning, too, is that it may not speak as much to centrists, and to those who don't follow politics that closely. And a related flaw is in presuming that the Democratic Party can be the means to bring about the transformations of politics that Rall desires. In theory this may be true. But in the real world, I am skeptical. And again, I have learned that identifying one party with the sinners and another with the saints my work, occasionally as rhetoric, but doesn't necessarily convince those not already convinced of the credibility of your claims.

Ultimately, then, Ted Rall here is primarily speaking to the already converted, and offering them inspiration. To those not yet converted, he may persuade some, but it depends a lot on them and on how open minded they are, as well as on what other information sources they may have.

3 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2005-10-28

It's hard to understand how anyone can have their head buried so far up their rear end that they could actually buy in to this. And at the same time it's easy to see why liberals cannot win an election. I would advise everyone to read this book. I would also advise everyone to read "The Law" by Frederic Bastiat when you're done for a real economic lesson about where our country is headed if we remain on this Socialistic track. "The Law" is about 30 pages long and can be read for free on the internet. It is absolute poison for the liberal mind (I know, I know... that is an oxymoron).

5 out of 5 stars Food for thought -- read it while thinking's still allowed.......2005-10-26

-

I found "Wake Up, You're Liberal!" to be excellent food for thought.

There are some who feel that all the important issues facing America and Americans have been solved. For those who feel this way, doctrinaire nonsense from one or another "ism" obviates the need to examine, consider, and decide -- all that's needed is to just keep shouting ideological catchphrases at any and all problems 'til the problems succumb from exhaustion.

For the great majority of centrist Americans, however, partisan shrieking isn't enough. For them, reflecting on earlier events and examining new ideas is an essential part of good citizenship.

Ted Rall's cogently written book, "Wake Up, You're Liberal!," provides that reflection and examination. Like any of our fellow species members, Mr. Rall may not always get it right, but that's a consequence of his considering complex problems rather than arguing that simplistic catchphrases alone are enough to solve them them.

His examination also means that the word "Liberal" in the title may mislead, even disappoint, some readers. One of the books recurring themes is that doctrinaire liberals and doctrinaire conservatives alike have allowed rigid advocacy of overly simplistic, even extremist, dogma to move their respective movements out of the political mainstream.

"Wake Up, You're Liberal!" won't offend or annoy anyone who can tolerate reasoned political dialog. The book certainly isn't grounds for having Mr. Rall imprisioned, exiled, or shot as some neocons have publicly suggested.

But for those of who naively belive that any book, doctrine, or "ism" can provide the answer to any and all problems, books like "Wake Up" may present an unacceptable deviance from approved doctrine. That's true whether the orthodoxy originates from the left or the right.

For that reason alone, I strongly suggest you read this book while it's still legal to do so...

3 out of 5 stars Outspoken author is passionate about his convictions.......2005-07-10

Ted Rall argues that liberal Democrats only problem comes down to a lack of proactive self-marketing.

Voters have thus forgotten (or do not want to realize) that liberal Democrats made Social Security, equal employment, clean water, free public education and many other policies which now draw strong majorities of public support.

We do not for instance hear a call to eliminate the pure foods act or overturn child labor bans although those were also enacted by the liberals of their time. This is because America is a fundamentally liberal country.

We have just let conservatives define what being a liberal is instead of constantly being proactive and doing it ourselves. Self-marketing gives people an honest picture of who we are and what we believe--liberals are the American mainstream. After the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon television debates we got cocky and forgot the importance of presentation to winning public offices.

He is also eerily accurate with his personal assessment of some campaign/party office conditions (pp. 189-191). Having the best party platform and the best issue positions in the world does not mean much for prospective voters when they are actually being cut down by self-absorbed individual party officials and/or find out the party has headquartered itself in something looking like the `end' frame in a disaster movie.

Having had my own experiences with such conditions, I completely agree. I can see where it does turn off an independent voter or a prospective party activist who is not committed enough about politics to then stay with the Democrats. There are some things an organization which cannot skimp on because image does matter to mission success. Even `nice' people cannot compensate for having a dilapidated office. A clean well-maintained office ultimately convinces voters that we will also keep government in a similar condition if elected.

Rall praises Clinton for some positions, but he also attacks the Democratic Leadership Council for trying to mimic the Republicans electoral success without first understanding where they had succeeded (pp. 153-182) or why. He also points out that the GOP has not moderated their tone in return, instead strengthening it.

At the same time, Rall forgets his own earlier advice about looking beyond stereotypes when he tries to talk about the feminist movement. Here Rall actually plays into the hands of people who want to believe that liberalism is bizzare.

He inadvertently undercuts the sincerity of his own organizing credo with an attack on Patricia Ireland, former president of the National Organization for Women, because of her sexuality (pp. 65-66). Rall is visibly obsessed with both her sexuality and the consequent `implications' for the feminist movement, she allegedly discredits us all only because some conservatives stereotype every feminist as a lesbian. He then expresses a preference for the earlier NOW, an irony given that the 1966 organization was much closer to the `republican lite' model which he claims to despise in other chapters of this same book.

Rall's book has some good points, but it is not flawless. People reading this book should take the gender observations with a grain of salt. Rall seems to have a different standard for gender than the issues which he does feels strongly about. His conversational style might draw in readers who are turned off by the tone of most other political books however.

5 out of 5 stars A Tool In Understanding - A Good Book.......2005-05-14

For a small book it is highly valuable with the basics in understanding of the liberal and conservative ideas. In this there are two authors, one, Bradley O'Leary - Conservative and Victor Kamber - Liberal, so the book is not bias, but fair. And in this they both argue their view on some of the major issues - very briefly that is, but enough for you to get the general ideas.

This book comes with three separate quizzes in determining where you stand. I stood a liberal before the book and after the quizzes I again stand somewhere between liberal and moderate liberal. I think that every book that fairly compares these two models of thought exposes the invalidity of conservative thinking and for this a book like this threatens their morality based on absolutism.

Also is a wonderful short essay on both venues of thought and its comparison to libertarianism, which I believe is much closer to conservatism.

I like this book enough to purchase a dozen or so copies and hand them out to reasonable people I care about and enjoy talking with. As small as this book is, it really is a classifier and eye opener, which removes much of the thoughtless cloud of the media where thousands watch and have not a clear conception of the differences between such thought systems.

Another book that is much more detailed and goes into the psychological models between conservatives and liberals is "Moral Politics" by George Lakoff, which I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars A nice book to read to get the facts straight!.......2000-12-27

I bought this book because I got into an argument with a friend of mine who prides himself on being a republican, whereas I have always voted democrat. (Not this time though. I voted Libertarian.) We took the tests, and yes his political spectrum is more to the right of me, but we both learned a few things about where we stood. There are three tests in the book. In the first test, somehow I came out MODERATELY CONSERVATIVE. (My friend was CONSERVATIVE, one more click to the right of me) The second test marked me MODERATELY LIBERAL, while my friend didn't take that test. The last one was LIBERAL for me while my friend was MODERATE TO CONSERVATIVE. More to the point, you learn a lot and you take a lot of disbelief in what both authors have to say. You'll likely like one point of view and not the other for all areas in this book, but that's life and that's America. BTW After reading this and thinking about it, I've declared myself socially very liberal while more fiscally moderate.

4 out of 5 stars A good book.......1999-11-29

I read this book, and I feel it can help the novice to the political arena in knowing what is the conservative or the liberal side of issues. The book allows you to know the other side's arguments about an issue.By doing so, it can make you have a better understanding of the issues. I feel the linear political spectrum is still good to measure anyone's point of view politically including even where libertarians are. I feel the tests are good ones, but I feel a better way of finding out where you stand is to divide the issues more into broad categories such as economic, social, domestic reform, military and foreign liberalism. I was rated as being moderate, but I was rated as a moderate because i am really an economic liberal, a social moderate,a liberal on domestic reform.a military conservative and a foreign moderate. If 0 is liberal,1 is moderate and 2 is conservative, I would score out of a possible 10(most conservative) a 4,just left of center. A libertarian could score himself the same way.The book is on the right track, no libertarian should mind this book. It has all views covered.By the way I scored a 20-middle of the road, but i now know what issues i am liberal on and what i am conservative on. It's a nice book, both the novice or the politically experienced can learned something from this book.A good 4 star rating.

3 out of 5 stars Geared for the Political Novice.......1999-04-25

Most individuals who understand both the political landscape and issues of the day, will attain little new knowledge from this book. Most likely one so astute in the realm of politics already knows his own political persuasion. The issues discussed in the book seem to be unenlightening; nothing more than the overused rhetoric of every issue from abortion to welfare. Neither conservatives nor liberals will feel their views have been properly pronounced or defended. The test re-affirms only the obvious (unless you were confused about your views). The book's tests seem to be rather inconsistent. On some tests one may be slighty conservative and on another one may prove to be slightly liberal or even more firmly conservative. They also make the mistake of using the linear political spectrum. This does not account for libertarians, thus (with the issues predominantly being social ones) a libertarian may be ranked as a liberal! The tests also seem to confuse political and social views, asking questions about telivision shows and books. One can be more socially moderate and still hold a political extreme or vice-versa. Furthermore, some of the tests actually require advanced poltical or government knowledge that a political novice (whom the book is geared for) would have a hard time answering. The book does have a few positives. Unlike most political spectrum assesments, it does give more weight to certain issues (ie-your stance on school vouchers has less of a determining factor than your view on the size of government). It also does give some introductory information to those not well briefed on an issue. In conclusion, the book may be worth it to find the general political philosophy of yourself or friends and family, however, it is not the most accurate barometer in existence nor does it explain all issues in enough depth. An interesting concept but not incredibly well done.

5 out of 5 stars Great choice of issues! Take the test; you may be surprised!.......1998-11-06

Victor Kamber and Bradley O'Leary offer a superb point-counterpoint of some of the most talked about issues of the day. Issues from health care and the minimum wage, all the way to the religious right and Contra-Aid. These men offer insights to the issues, and argue their positions forcefully. Yes, these men are biased at times...but this makes it all the more exciting to read, and helps the reader latch onto which writer they agree with.

In addition, this book offers three tests for the readers themselves to find out where they stand on the political spectrum. Are you really a "sit on the fence" centrist? Take the test, and you may find otherwise.

Anyone interested in politics should read this book. Three cheers for Kamber and O'Leary!
