Brent Turvey has placed some nice pictures and logical ideas in his book however, the reader must keep in mind that Mr Turvey is a self proclaimed "criminal profiler." The book is worth a flip through but not recommended to be on your shelf, if you work in the field of forensic psychology. It is this reader's recommendation to stick to books written by Dr. David Canter, Dr. Laurence Alison and academic journals if you are involved on hands on work in the field.
Do not buy this book.......2007-09-24
This book is awful I can't beleave I spent money on it. Brent Turvey must have been turned down for a FBI's BSU for a job. Now he spends his time writing books that make people dUmbEr and slaming some of the best Profilers in the world. Do yourself a favor and save your money and I'll tag it under juck.
Decent criminal justice book.......2007-05-06
No, it's not a perfect book on the subject but so does other books. I think this is still a must-read, but not the only reading material, for anyone interested in the criminal justice field.
Heed FBI warnings: Turvey exploits niave wannabe profilers.......2007-01-21
Please do not buy this book. Mr. Turvey's flawed logic regarding "inductive" and "deductive" profiling is flat out incorrect. He is jealous of the likes of Gregg McCrary, Robert Ressler, and John Douglas (individuals who have actually solved crimes), and his "textbook" is a weak attempt to discredit and insult the FBI. The tragic part of what this man has done is the thousands of dollars he takes from hundreds of American citizens who think they can spend 500 dollars on his online course and then transform themselves into criminal profilers. The ONLY profilers work at the FBI and at other state departments of investigation, those actually responsible for solving crimes. Anyone can be a Monday morning quarterback and testify for desperate defense attornys who would do anything to get their client off.
A Word of Caution from former FBI agent Gregg McCrary:
There are a number of pretenders who claim to be "profilers." The common traits found among these individuals is little or no formal training in profiling and some have no investigative experience at all. The lack of training and experience has not stopped some of these individuals from authoring books about profiling. Some offer workshops or courses on the internet and proclaim that they can teach you to become a profiler - for a fee of course.

The author is a bit condescending in his writing style. He is very clear that HIS way is the ONLY way, and he never shies from insults. Clinicians who practice using a Freudian model are "voyeuristic," and anyone who has an interest in this subject must prove themselves in his method or else they're just morbid and disgusting people who have watched too many movies. Maybe he forgot he came into this field too.
There are a few useful things in here, but I'm sure there are much better books with a more neutral approach. I found the author annoying and unfunny.
Book Description
Reassembling the Social is a fundamental challenge from one of the world's leading social theorists to how we understand society and the 'social'. Bruno Latour's contention is that the word 'social', as used by Social Scientists, has become laden with assumptions to the point where it has become misnomer. When the adjective is applied to a phenomenon, it is used to indicate a stablilized state of affairs, a bundle of ties that in due course may be used to account for another phenomenon. But Latour also finds the word used as if it described a type of material, in a comparable way to an adjective such as 'wooden' or 'steely'. Rather than simply indicating what is already assembled together, it is now used in a way that makes assumptions about the nature of what is assembled. It has become a word that designates two distinct things: a process of assembling; and a type of material, distinct from others. Latour shows why 'the social' cannot be thought of as a kind of material or domain, and disputes attempts to provide a 'social explanations' of other states of affairs. While these attempts have been productive (and probably necessary) in the past, the very success of the social sciences mean that they are largely no longer so. At the present stage it is no longer possible to inspect the precise constituents entering the social domain. Latour returns to the original meaning of 'the social' to redefine the notion, and allow it to trace connections again. It will then be possible to resume the traditional goal of the social sciences, but using more refined tools. Drawing on his extensive work examining the 'assemblages' of nature, Latour finds it necessary to scrutinize thoroughly the exact content of what is assembled under the umbrella of Society. This approach, a 'sociology of associations', has become known as Actor-Network-Theory, and this book is an essential introduction both for those seeking to understand Actor-Network Theory, or the ideas of one of its most influential proponents.

An Existential view toward sociology.......2007-03-09
Given our experiences in late-modernity outrun our pre-developed concepts especially in innovation Latour claims that sociologists should themselves be part of innovation experiences. He portrays a new type of sociology (the one including objects) by which one can describe rather than prescribe. Latour initiates the difference between ANT and Sociology of Social(SOS), claiming that the latter chooses its tools from repertoire of agreed-upon criteria (pre-developed concepts) while in ANT we must follow the traces left by the actors. What is left we shall name as a society of actors and works. ANT analyst must himself participate and experinece the phenomena in a "here-and-now" perceptual sense and then conceptualize what he has experienced. In Latour's argument all things including human and non-human are mediators by which action is not merely transfered but also transformed to a new state. Both the actor and its associated action undergo a metamorphosis process in each mode of action. Consequently we have Five sources of Uncertainty:
1.Groups may form and depart for tyrrany of distance and proximity is removed
2.Action may be done by others and we can not fully anticipate in advance the nature of agencies and the outcome
3. Things have agency no matter how much man has the power to control
4. In the realm of things matter of fact prevails whereas in the combination of "things and human" matter of fact trasforms to matter of concern. In other words in the new relam i.e. "socio-technical realm" matter of scientific facts combines with the matter of cognitive concern.
5. Writing down experienced accounts
Hence, It's a call of Heraclitus aphorism i.e. "you can not step in the same river twice" along with Existentialism philosophy. Both you and the river change during the course of action. But you must expereince this change to percieve it. It could not be described completely by merely using pre-developed concepts. Your experience precedes your pre-developed concepts about the river and your reflection when crossing the river. Latour sometimes complicate his arguments by using difficult expressions, terminologies and long Gallic statements, but his words are very insightful, and his message is invaluable after-the-fact.
One issue which I didn't find in this book was responsibility and "responsible reflection". In other words Latour doesn't open the question about self-responsibility of actors that ANT analyst should follow. ANT analyst is not permitted to give advice to actors. He can only observe and expereince. This is ironically a matter of concern not a matter of fact that might be considered in his future arguments, given that Engineers and Scientists, for example, from ANT perspective are actors which should only watched not advised responsibly. To sum up ANT is to follow the "Dislocation of Action" and "opening eyes to see who is acting within any site; where the consequence of this action may travel; where are the likely sources that provoke action and actors"; "how sequence and consequence of sites change the nature of action" and the like. The Network we could envisage through resolving questions as such shall be mapping out and named as Society. Hence, late modernity is an entity that must be reassembled through ANT lens.
The Clearest ANT.......2006-02-18
Perhaps it has a lot to do with the book being written in English (or at least it appears to have been, there is no translator listed), but this is by far the most lucid thing I've read by Latour. In a way it's a radical break, he finally embraces his troubled intellectual child Actor Network Theory, stops expecting its meaning to magically emerge from the context and sets forth exploring what it actually is and how it can work.

This isn't Pop Psychology.......2006-10-15
Two years ago, while doing research to teach an undergraduate course in Political Psychology, the choices were slim and none. Several books of edited chapters were available, but for an undergraduate course, I wanted a textbook that would provide structure to the field. Cottam, et al have done an admirable job of marrying basic psychological processes to political applications. Well written and informative, I would recommend this as a textbook for upper division students in Psychology and Political Science. WARNING: take Social Psychology first. You won't understand the theoretical underpinnings without Social Psychology.
Great introduction to Political Psychology.......2005-11-12
This book is very recommended for anyone interested in politics, psychology, the reasons behind political actions and of course those taking beginner classes in political pschyology. The book is in an easy readable style and motivates you to learn various psychological concepts such as perception, emotions, cognition, group, etc. The book is well structured in focusing on the individual and then on the group. A chapter on leadership helps better understand presidential behavior.
In the second part (Ch. 6-10) many of the concepts are applied to specific areas of interest to political scientists: voting and the media, race and ethnicity, nationalism, political extremism and international relations. Each chapter concludes with a list of key terms (which are also bold within the text). At the end of the book, all terms are listed for quick reference.
However since this book is merely introductory, it will make you want to read more on the interesting topics. The literature lists at the end of each chapter give a good start for further research!

Intro to Women's Studies.......2006-01-08
This book was a good introduction to Women's Studies, especially for those who have never taken a class or major in Women's Studies. The format of the book made it easy to understand concepts introduced in the essays. They even have a key terms section, which I found VERY helpful. Some of the essays can be dense, like the one going over intersectionality. Overall, I found this book very pleasant to read.

Good Training Manual.......2007-10-09

As a certified first responder with the City of Austin Emergency Measures Office I was delighted to find more information to add to my training. (The City of Austin provided training as a result of 9/11 in the event Austin, Texas, experiences a disaster from terrorists or other incidents of major concern.) George W. Doherty's book certainly presents a concise and informative addition.
Doherty explains it all, from psychological aspects to dealing with stress, trauma, and repercussions as well as how to deal with children, adults, elderly, and those with special needs during a crisis. He also covers societal and cultural aspects; however, he did not cover religious/spiritual beliefs of various groups. (The training I took covered this facet and I believe would be a good addition to Doherty's detailed information. Knowing one's beliefs gives direction to the responder of how to deal with the individual under duress.) But, there is more - he not only covers disasters and critical incidents, he covers war and terrorism. In addition, one extremely important aspect Doherty discusses is self-care. He gives in-depth suggestions for debriefing and follow-up.
The back of the book gives selected references for further reading as well as a list of websites where more information is available. I felt this was an extremely good list and was amazed to see how much information was actually offered. Doherty also includes a "victims' needs" assessment and a course test. Reading this book and passing the course test will grant you a certificate with Contact Hours for approved organizations.
The only downfall of the book is the cover. When I looked at the cover I was taken back because, aside from the title, it doesn't indicate the content of the book. Although a lovely photo of mountains and a lake is displayed, for marketing purposes I don't believe this cover gives the book justice. The cover is more inclined to look like a coffee table book rather than an informative training manual. From a marketing perspective, I highly recommend that the cover be changed for future printings.
With all that said, I believe Doherty is providing a great addition to the library of a first responder, either beginner or one that is experienced. The information is well-researched and appropriate. Furthermore, I believe "Crisis Intervention Training for Disaster Workers" could be used by trainers when creating first responder to disaster training courses and be part of the study material.
